• Why does this tooltip appear *below* a transclucent form?

  I have an form with an Opacity less then 1.0. I have a tooltip associated with a label on the form. When I hover the mouse over the label, the tooltip shows up under the form instead of over the form. If I leave the Opacity at its default value of 1.0, the tooltip correctly appears over the form. However, my form is obviously no longer translucent. ;-) I'm testing on an XP system with .NET 3.5. If you don't see this problem on your system, let me know what operating system and version of .NET you have. I have tried manually adjusting the position of the ToolTip with SetWindowPos() and creating a ToolTip "by hand" using CreateWindowEx(), but the problem remains. This makes me suspect its a Win32 API problem, not a problem with the Windows Forms implementation that runs on top of Win32. Why does the tooltip appear under the form, and, more importantly, how can I get it to appear over the form where it should? • Flex: Constant strings in metadata

  I have something like public class Controller { [Observer("fetchEmployeesEvent")] public function fetchEmployees() : void { //doSomething } } and I want something like public class Controller { public static const FETCH_EMPLOYEES_EVENT : String = "fetchEmployeesEvent"; [Observer(FETCH_EMPLOYEES_EVENT)] public function fetchEmployees() : void { //doSomething } } My problem is that only the first code snippet works. Flex seems to ignore the constant FETCH_EMPLOYEES_EVENT in the metadata-tag. My question is: Is it somehow possible to use constant strings in metadata?

• Permanent mutex locking causing deadlock?

  I am having a problem with mutexes (pthread_mutex on Linux) where if a thread locks a mutex right again after unlocking it, another thread is not very successful getting a lock. I've attached test code where one mutex is created, along with two threads that in an endless loop lock the mutex, sleep for a while and unlock it again. The output I expect to see is "alive" messages from both threads, one from each (e.g. 121212121212. However what I get is that one threads gets the majority of locks (e.g. 111111222222222111111111 or just 1111111111111...). If I add a usleep(1) after the unlocking, everything works as expected. Apparently when the thread goes to SLEEP the other thread gets its lock - however this is not the way I was expecting it, as the other thread has already called pthread_mutex_lock. I suspect this is the way this is implemented, in that the actice thread has priority, however it causes certain problem in this particular testcase. • Copying a byte buffer with JNI

  I've found plenty of tutorials / questions on Stackoverflow that deal with copying char arrays from C/JNI side into something like a byte[] in Java, but not the other way around. I am using a native C library which expects a byte array. I simply want to get data from a byte[] in java, into preferably an unsigned char[] in C. Long story short: What is the best way of copying data from a jBytearray in JNI? Is there any way to detect it's size?

• Beginner assembly programming memory usage question

  I've been getting into some assembly lately and its fun as it challenges everything i have learned. I was wondering if i could ask a few questions When running an executable, does the entire executable get loaded into memory? From a bit of fiddling i've found that constants aren't really constants? Is it just a compiler thing? const int i = 5; _asm { mov i, 0 } // i is now 0 and compiles fine So are all variables assigned with a constant value embedded into the file as well? Meaning: int a = 1; const int b = 2; void something() { const int c = 3; int d = 4; } Will i find all of these variables embedded in the file (in a hex editor or something)? If the executable is loaded into memory then "constants" are technically using memory? I've read around on the net people saying that constants don't use memory, is this true?

• What's the right tool for this job in Google Spreadsheets?

  Is it possible to nest simple programs within a Google doc spreadsheet, similar to how you would w/Basic in Excel? Or alternatively a simple = syntax using regex, if there is a way to do that in google docs? I want to take a list of multiple names(name1, name2, name3) in a single cell from across multiple identical sheets and transpose them to another sheet within the same spreadsheet, check for duplicates and ignore capitals, etc. Is there a way to do this?

• ASP.NET Login Page Redirection Problem

  Hello everyone! I'm building a silverlight application hosted on ASP.NET Web App. / IIS7 / SSL-enabled website. For security, I put my silverlight page inside a Members folder in the ASP.NET Web Application, and restricted access from anonymous users.(see web.config below) when users try to access pages under Members folder, they get redirected to https://www.ssldemo.com/authenticationtest/login.aspx. • Java CRTP: Works for container but not for methods?

  I have a baseclass with a protected static ArrayList. I want to have a seperate ArrayList for each kind of subclass that extends this baseclass. This is when I applied CRTP: public class BaseExample<T> { protected static ArrayList<Integer> data = new ArrayList<Integer>(); } This works just fine. However, when I try to implement the following static method in the same base class, it doesn't adhere to CRTP: public static void clear() { data.clear(); } For example: class SubExample extends BaseExample<SubExample> { // insertion methods accessing 'data' field // these work fine :) } SubExample.clear(); // does not seem to clear data container Do I need to somehow explicitly specify T in my baseclass clear method? Note: These are all pure static classes.

• Process for beginning a Ruby on Rails project

  I'm about to begin a Ruby on Rails project and I'd love to hear how others go through the process of starting an application design. I have quite a bit of experience with RoR, but don't have that many starting from scratch with only a vision experiences and would appreciate the wisdom of others who've been there. I'm looking for an order of events, reasons for the order, and maybe why each part is important. • When using DrawText, what does TextFormatFlags.Internal (a.k.a. DT_INTERNAL) do?

  When using TextRenderer.DrawText(), what does setting the TextFormatFlags.Internal flag actually do? Equivalently, what does setting the DT_INTERNAL flag to Win32's DrawTextEx() function do? More to the point, when should I set that flag and when should I not set it? The documentation says: "Uses the system font to calculate text metrics", but I'm not entirely sure what that means. I've done some limited testing and setting the flag seems to change how the font is rendered when using a small font size, but doesn't seem to make a difference when using a large font size.

• C# performance methods of receiving data from a socket?

  Lets assume we have a simple internet socket, and its going to send 10 megabytes (because i want to ignore memory issues) of random data through. Is there any performance difference or a best practice method that one should use for receiving data? The final output data should be represented by a byte[]. Yes i know writing an arbitrary amount of data to memory is bad, and if I was downloading a large file i wouldn't be doing it like this. But for argument sake lets ignore that and assume its a smallish amount of data. I also realise that the bottleneck here is probably not the memory management but rather the socket receiving. I just want to know what would be the most efficient method of receiving data. A few dodgy ways can think of is: Have a List and a buffer, after the buffer is full, add it to the list and at the end list.ToArray() to get the byte[] Write the buffer to a memory stream, after its complete construct a byte[] of the stream.Length and read it all into it in order to get the byte[] output. Is there a more efficient/better way of doing this?

• Firefox HTML5 video playback inconsistancy

  Hey all, I've got an HTML5 video on a page. When tested locally, Chrome, Safari, and Opera work beautifully. Firefox plays it, but doesn't loop as efficiently as the others. The real problem is when it's tested off a server. Firefox doesn't play the video, but recognizes there is one there. I was wondering if all that open ended three-different-ways syntax can be swung in Firefox's favor. Thanks! • Can you safely rely upon Yahoo Pipes to offload ETL for your application?

  Yahoo Pipes are a very intriguing choice for sort of a poor-man's server-free ETL solution, but would it be a good idea to build an application around one or many Pipes? I've really only used them for toy things here and there, with the only thing I've used longer than a week or two being one amalgamated and filtered RSS feed that I've plugged into Google Reader (which has worked great, but if it goes out for a while I wouldn't notice). So, my question is, would building an application around Yahoo Pipes be reliable (available most of the time)? Ideally it'd be something I could rely on being up 99+% of the time. It looks like the Pipes Terms of Use permit building apps around it, but I am unfamiliar with anyone building anything significant using them.

• How to deploy a single webapp with multiple web-modules that may be removed or added individually

  We currently run two separate webapps (WARs) deployed in one single EAR containing additional JARs and settings. To improve our deployment I want to split one of these webapps into different modules that may be build and packaged individually. But I've currently no clue on how to package these modules so that I'm able to add or remove them as desired - at best during runtime. The webapp is getting more and more complex and I'd like to separate some of the functionality into modules. These modules should be packaged as single archives. As long as they contain only classes and resources loaded through code I know how to do this (simple JARs). But how about JSPs? Normally a WAR file contains JSPs or HTML files. I my case it are JSF pages utilizing JBoss Seam and RichFaces. These modules will add classes, resources and JSF pages and other includes to the running webapplication. Is it somehow possible to deploy them as individual archives to serve the same running webapp? We are using Maven for our build and packaging and deploy into JBoss v4.

• Structuring the UI code of a single-page EXTjs Web app using Rails?

  I’m in the process of creating a large single-page web-app using ext-js for the UI components with Rails on the backend. I’ve come to good solutions for transferring data using Whorm gem and Rails support of RESTful Resources. What I haven’t come to a conclusion on is how to structure the UI and business logic aspects of the application. I’ve had a look at a few options, including Netzke but haven’t seen anything that I really think fits my needs. How should a web-application that uses ext-js components, layouts, and controls in the browser and Rails on the server best implement UI component re-use, good organization, and maintainability while maintaining a flexible layout design. Specifically I’m looking for best-practice suggestions for structuring the code that creates and configures UI components (many UI config options will be based on user data) Should EXT classes be extended in static JS for often re-used customizations and then instantiated with various configuration options by generated JS within html partials? Should partials create javascript blocks that instantiate EXT components? Should partials call helpers that return ruby hashes for EXT component config which is then dumped to Json? Something else entirely? There are many options and I'd love to hear from people who've been down this road and found some methodology that worked for them.
