  • Criteria for selecting software for embedded device

    - by Suresh Kumar
We are currently evaluating Web servers for an embedded device. We have laid down the evaluation criteria for things like HTTP version, Security, Compression etc. On the embeddable side, we have identified the following criteria: Memory footprint Memory management (support for plugging in a custom memory manager) CPU usage Thread usage (support for thread pool) Portability What I want inputs on is: Are there any other criteria that an embeddable software should meet? What exactly does it mean when someone says that a software is designed for embeddable use? We currently have zeroed in on two Web servers: AppWeb Lighttpd (lighty) Feature wise, both the above Web servers seem to be on par. However, it is claimed that AppWeb is designed for embedded use while Lighttpd is not. To choose between the above two Web servers, what criteria should I be looking at?

  • Feasability of reverse engineering some embedded code

    - by user258526
All, My company is in the situation where we are using an embedded control system from another company in another country. We do not have the source code or the schematics to this system, and the manufacturer doesn't want to release them, seemingly at any price or under any terms. We are thus stuck with a 6 month turn around to get even a small modification done, and they can basically charge any amount they want. Legal aspects aside, would it be at all feasible to reverse engineer the embedded code back into C? Do any companies exist that could do this for us? Thank you, Fred

  • What advantages does Windows Embedded Enterprise give you?

    - by Max Schmeling
My company has built a machine that measures wedge and roundness of lenses by reading and interacting with very precise indicators, motors, and a switch panel. The interface for the machine is a WPF application and it runs on Windows Vista on a normal PC bought from the store. I've never worked with Windows Embedded, but it sounds to me like it's intended for this type of system. My question is, what does it buy me? If I were to run this on Windows Embedded Enterprise (Vista) what benefits do I get? Do I get more control of the load, login, and all that? Can I make it more seamless where it doesn't really feel just like a normal application running full screen? Is it something I should look into more?

  • How can I prevent default_environment variables from getting set by Capistrano's sudo action?

    - by Logan Koester
My deploy.rb sets some environment variables to use the regular user's local Ruby rather than the system-wide one. set :default_environment, { :PATH => '/home/myapp/.rvm/bin:/home/myapp/.rvm/bin:/home/myapp/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.1-p378/bin:/home/myapp/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/bin:/home/myapp/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378%global/bin:/home/myapp/bin:/usr/bin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games', :RUBY_VERSION => 'ruby-1.9.1-p378', :GEM_HOME => '/home/myapp/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378', :GEM_PATH => '/home/myapp/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378:/home/myapp/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378%global' } Naturally, when a task is using sudo, I would expect the system-wide ruby to be used instead. But it seems the environment variables are being set anyway, which is obviously invalid for the root user and returns an error: executing "sudo -p 'sudo password: ' /etc/init.d/god stop" servers: ["myapp.com"] [myapp.com] executing command command finished failed: "env PATH=/home/myapp/.rvm/bin:/home/myapp/.rvm/bin:/home/myapp/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.1-p378/bin:/home/myapp/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/bin:/home/myapp/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378%global/bin:/home/myapp/bin:/usr/bin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games RUBY_VERSION=ruby-1.9.1-p378 GEM_HOME=/home/myapp/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378 GEM_PATH=/home/myapp/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378:/home/myapp/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378%global sh -c 'sudo -p '\\''sudo password: '\\'' /etc/init.d/god stop'" on myapp.com It makes no difference whether I use capistrano's sudo "system call" or the regular run "sudo system call". How can I avoid this?

  • My Ruby on Rails application only works if the address contains the port

    - by True Soft
I have a Ruby on Rails application that works ok on my notebook ( http://localhost:3000/ ) I uploaded it on my hosting server, created with CPanel X an application, the URL is http://example.com:12007/ created a rewrite from http://example.com/ to http://example.com:12007/, and started it. If I write in my browser http://example.com:12007/ or http://www.example.com:12007/ all the pages work as expected. But if I write http://example.com/ or http://www.example.com/ the first page is displayed, but without any css or images (just like it wouldn't find them). I can see all the text (even the text from my MySQL database), but with no format. And if I click on any link, I get a error page like this: Not Found The requested URL /some_controller was not found on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. What should I do to make my website work without writing the port in the address bar? The content of my /public_html/.htaccess file is RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example.com$ [OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.example.com$ RewriteRule ^/?$ "http\:\/\/127\.0\.0\.1\:12007%{REQUEST_URI}" [P,QSA,L] which I guess was generated by CPanel Rewrites.

  • ruby on rails configuration

    - by Themasterhimself
Im using the following guide for getting started with rails for ubuntu 9.10. http://guides.rails.info/getting_started.html I have installed both ruby and gem. gokul@gokul-laptop:~$ ruby -v ruby 1.8.7 (2009-06-12 patchlevel 174) [i486-linux] gokul@gokul-laptop:~$ gem -v 1.3.6 gokul@gokul-laptop:~$ For rails, gokul@gokul-laptop:~$sudo gem install rails doesnt seem to give any response. so used the synaptic package manager for installing it. And it seems to have installed correctly. gokul@gokul-laptop:~$ rails Usage: /usr/bin/rails /path/to/your/app [options] Options: -r, --ruby=path Path to the Ruby binary of your choice (otherwise scripts use env, dispatchers current path). Default: /usr/bin/ruby1.8 -d, --database=name Preconfigure for selected database (options: mysql/oracle/postgresql/sqlite2/sqlite3/frontbase/ibm_db). Default: sqlite3 -D, --with-dispatchers Add CGI/FastCGI/mod_ruby dispatches code to generated application skeleton Default: false --freeze Freeze Rails in vendor/rails from the gems generating the skeleton Default: false -m, --template=path Use an application template that lives at path (can be a filesystem path or URL). Default: (none) Rails Info: -v, --version Show the Rails version number and quit. -h, --help Show this help message and quit. General Options: -p, --pretend Run but do not make any changes. -f, --force Overwrite files that already exist. -s, --skip Skip files that already exist. -q, --quiet Suppress normal output. -t, --backtrace Debugging: show backtrace on errors. -c, --svn Modify files with subversion. (Note: svn must be in path) -g, --git Modify files with git. (Note: git must be in path) Description: The 'rails' command creates a new Rails application with a default directory structure and configuration at the path you specify. Example: rails ~/Code/Ruby/weblog This generates a skeletal Rails installation in ~/Code/Ruby/weblog. See the README in the newly created application to get going. gokul@gokul-laptop:~$ app folder is created with all the proper folders. • Language Club – Battle of the Dynamic Languages

    - by Ben Griswold
After dedicating the last eight weeks to learning Ruby, it’s time to move onto another language.  I really dig Ruby.  I really enjoy its dynamism and expressiveness and always-openness and it’s been the highlight of our coding club for me so far. But that’s just my take on the language.  I know a lot of coders who’s stomachs turn with the mere thought of Ruby.  They say it’s Ruby’s openness which has them feeling uneasy.  I’d say “write a bunch of tests and get over it,” but I figure there must be more to it than always open classes and possible method collisions. Yes, there’s something else to it alright. The folks who didn’t fall head over heals for Ruby are already in love with Python.  You might remember that Python was the first language we tackled in our coding club.  My time with Python was okay but it didn’t feel as natural to me as Ruby.  But let’s say we started with Ruby and then moved onto Python.  Would I see Python in a different light right now.  Might I even prefer Python over Ruby?  I suppose it’s possible but it’s pretty tough to test that theory – unless we visit Python for a second time. That’s right. The language club is going to focus on Python again and in my attempt to learn Python – yet again – in the open, I’ll be posting my solutions here just as I did for Ruby.  We don’t always have second chances so I going about this relearning with two primary goals in mind:  First, I’m going to use IronPython and the IronPython tools which provide a Python code editor, a file-based project system, and an interactive Python interpreter, all inside Visual Studio 2010.  As a note, the IronPython tools are now part of the main IronPython installer which is Version 2.7 Alpha 1 (not the latest stable version, 2.6.1) and I’d be crazy not to use them.  Second, I’d like to make sure I’m still learning Python without a complete MS skew so I’m going to run my code through Eclipse using the PyDev plugin as well.  Heck, I might use IDLE too. I already have this setup on my machine so it’s no big deal. Okay, that’s it for now.  I worked on the first ten Euler problems last night and the solutions will be posted shortly. Wish me luck.

  • RPi and Java Embedded: Hard-Float Support is Here!!!

    - by hinkmond
You wanted Java Embedded with Hardware Floating Point support to install on a default Raspian environment for your Raspberry Pi? Well, you just got your wish. Merry Christmas! See: Developer JDK 8 for ARM w/Hard-Float Here's a quote: The Java SE 8 Developer Preview Release for ARM including JavaFX (JDK 8) on Linux has been made available at http://jdk8.java.net. The Developer Preview is provided to the community to get feedback on the ongoing progress of the project. Developers can start developing applications using this build of Java SE 8 on an ARM device, such as the a Raspberry Pi. It's a regular JDK (Java SE 8 preview) for your Raspberry Pi, so you should note this means there is a javac (and the other typical JDK tools) available to compile your Java apps right there on the device! Woot! I'll cover step-by-step instructions how to do that in a future blog post. Stay tuned... Hinkmond

  • compass-rails 1.03 - TypeError: can't convert nil into String

    - by Romiko
I am running: ruby 1.9.3p392 (2013-02-22) [i386-mingw32] compass-rails 1.0.3 I used the Windows RailsInstaller to install Ruby on Rails Gemfile group :assets do gem 'sass-rails', '~> 3.2.3' gem 'coffee-rails', '~> 3.2.1' gem 'compass-rails','~> 1.0.2' # See https://github.com/sstephenson/execjs#readme for more supported runtimes # gem 'therubyracer', :platforms => :ruby gem 'uglifier', '>= 1.0.3' end I am currently experiencing issues importing sprites. My sprites are in: assets/images/source in my _shared.scss file I have: //Sprites @import "./source/*.png"; $source-sprite-dimensions: true; In my application.scss I have: /* * This is a manifest file that'll be compiled into application.css, which will include all the files * listed below. * * Any CSS and SCSS file within this directory, lib/assets/stylesheets, vendor/assets/stylesheets, * or vendor/assets/stylesheets of plugins, if any, can be referenced here using a relative path. * * You're free to add application-wide styles to this file and they'll appear at the top of the * compiled file, but it's generally better to create a new file per style scope. * *= require_self */ @import "_shared.scss"; @import "baseline.scss"; @import "global.scss"; @import "normalize.scss"; @import "print.scss"; @import "desktop.scss"; @import "tablet.scss"; @import "home.css.scss"; I am also using rails server and not compass watcher. • Can't install pg gem on Windows

    - by sNiCKY
I've got 2 Ruby versions: 1.8.7 and 1.9.2 and PostgreSQL 8.3. I cant install pg gem on any of them. Getting this error: C:/Development/Ruby187/bin/ruby.exe extconf.rb checking for pg_config... yes not recorded checking for libpq-fe.h... no Can't find the 'libpq-fe.h header *** extconf.rb failed *** Could not create Makefile due to some reason, probably lack of necessary libraries and/or headers. Check the mkmf.log file for more details. You may need configuration options. Provided configuration options: --with-opt-dir --without-opt-dir --with-opt-include --without-opt-include=${opt-dir}/include --with-opt-lib --without-opt-lib=${opt-dir}/lib --with-make-prog --without-make-prog --srcdir=. --curdir --ruby=C:/Development/Ruby187/bin/ruby --with-pg --without-pg --with-pg-config --without-pg-config --with-pg-dir --without-pg-dir --with-pg-include --without-pg-include=${pg-dir}/include --with-pg-lib --without-pg-lib=${pg-dir}/lib I know it's a common problem, but I haven't found any working solution yet... Oh, I have added C:\Program Files (x86)\PostgreSQL\8.3\bin to my PATH.

  • How to verify the SSL connection when calling an URI?

    - by robertokl
Hello, I am developing an web application that is authenticated using CAS (A single-sign-on solution: http://www.ja-sig.org/wiki/display/CAS/Home). For security reasons, I need two things to work: The communication between CAS and my application needs to be secure My application needs to accept the certification coming with CAS, so that I can guarantee that the CAS responding is the real CAS Server. This is what I got so far: uri = URI.parse("https://www.google.com/accounts") https = Net::HTTP.new(uri.host, uri.port) https.use_ssl = (uri.scheme == 'https') https.verify_mode = (OpenSSL::SSL::VERIFY_PEER) raw_res = https.start do |conn| conn.get("#{uri.path}?#{uri.query}") end This works just great in my Mac OSX. When I try to reach an insecure uri, it raises an exception, and when I try to reach a secure uri, it allow me normally, just like expected. The problem starts when I deploy my application on my Linux server. I tried in both Ubuntu and Red Hat. Independing of what uri I try to reach, it always raises me this exception: OpenSSL::SSL::SSLError: SSL_connect returned=1 errno=0 state=SSLv3 read server certificate B: certificate verify failed from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:586:in `connect' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:586:in `connect' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:553:in `do_start' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:542:in `start' from (irb):7 I think this have something to do with my installed OpenSSL package, but I can't be sure. This are my installed OpenSSL packages: openssl.x86_64 0.9.8e-12.el5 installed openssl-devel.x86_64 0.9.8e-12.el5 installed I tried using HTTParty as well, but it just ignores the SSL certificated. I hope someone can help me, either by telling me a gem that works the way I need. Thanks.

I have the following code in my model: attr_accessor :expiry_date validates_presence_of :expiry_date, :on => :create, :message => "can't be blank" and the following in my view: <%= date_select :account, :expiry_date, :discard_day => true, :start_year => Time.now.year, :end_year => Time.now.year + 15, :order => [:month, :year] %> However, when I submit my form I get: ActiveRecord::MultiparameterAssignmentErrors in SignupController#create /Users/x/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.6-p383/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:3073:in `execute_callstack_for_multiparameter_attributes' /Users/x/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.6-p383/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:3028:in `assign_multiparameter_attributes' /Users/x/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.6-p383/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:2750:in `attributes=' /Users/x/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.6-p383/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/base.rb:2438:in `initialize' Any ideas as to what the problem might be? I've looked at #93277 with no joy, so am kinda stuck. Adding day to the select does NOT resolve the issue. Any ideas?

I can create a new project using rails and I can use stuff like rails migration ... and i (correctly) get a error because the sqlite gem is missing. but when i try using rails migration ... with a project i checked out from github, it doesn't recognize that it is a rails project i get: Usage: rails new APP_PATH [options] Options: -d, [--database=DATABASE] # Preconfigure for selected database (options: mysql/oracle/postgresql/sqlite3/frontbase/ibm_db) # Default: sqlite3 -O, [--skip-active-record] # Skip Active Record files [--dev] # Setup the application with Gemfile pointing to your Rails checkout -J, [--skip-prototype] # Skip Prototype files -T, [--skip-test-unit] # Skip Test::Unit files -G, [--skip-git] # Skip Git ignores and keeps -b, [--builder=BUILDER] # Path to an application builder (can be a filesystem path or URL) [--edge] # Setup the application with Gemfile pointing to Rails repository -m, [--template=TEMPLATE] # Path to an application template (can be a filesystem path or URL) -r, [--ruby=PATH] # Path to the Ruby binary of your choice # Default: /usr/bin/ruby1.8 [--skip-gemfile] # Don't create a Gemfile and it goes on. any ideas? edit: it's probably an important detail that earlier my rails wasn't working at all. i had to cp /usr/bin/ruby to /usr/bin/local/ruby

  • Flushing a queue using AMQP, Rabbit, and Ruby

    - by jeffshantz
I'm developing a system in Ruby that is going to make use of RabbitMQ to send messages to a queue as it does some work. I am using: Ruby 1.9.1 Stable RabbitMQ 1.7.2 AMQP gem v0.6.7 (http://github.com/tmm1/amqp) Most of the examples I have seen on this gem have their publish calls in an EM.add_periodic_timer block. This doesn't work for what I suspect is a vast majority of use cases, and certainly not for mine. I need to publish a message as I complete some work, so putting a publish statement in an add_periodic_timer block doesn't suffice. So, I'm trying to figure out how to publish a few messages to a queue, and then "flush" it, so that any messages I've published are then delivered to my subscribers. To give you an idea of what I mean, consider the following publisher code: #!/usr/bin/ruby require 'rubygems' require 'mq' MESSAGES = ["hello","goodbye","test"] AMQP.start do queue = MQ.queue('testq') messages_published = 0 while (messages_published < 50) if (rand() < 0.4) message = MESSAGES[rand(MESSAGES.size)] puts "#{Time.now.to_s}: Publishing: #{message}" queue.publish(message) messages_published += 1 end sleep(0.1) end AMQP.stop do EM.stop end end So, this code simply loops, publishing a message with 40% probability on each iteration of the loop, and then sleeps for 0.1 seconds. It does this until 50 messages have been published, and then stops AMQP. Of course, this is just a proof of concept. Now, my subscriber code: #!/usr/bin/ruby require 'rubygems' require 'mq' AMQP.start do queue = MQ.queue('testq') queue.subscribe do |header, msg| puts "#{Time.now.to_s}: Received #{msg}" end end So, we just subscribe to the queue, and for each message received, we print it out. Great, except that the subscriber only receives all 50 messages when the publisher calls AMQP.stop. Here's the output from my publisher. It has been truncated in the middle for brevity: $ ruby publisher.rb 2010-04-14 21:45:42 -0400: Publishing: test 2010-04-14 21:45:42 -0400: Publishing: hello 2010-04-14 21:45:42 -0400: Publishing: test 2010-04-14 21:45:43 -0400: Publishing: test 2010-04-14 21:45:44 -0400: Publishing: test 2010-04-14 21:45:44 -0400: Publishing: goodbye 2010-04-14 21:45:45 -0400: Publishing: goodbye 2010-04-14 21:45:45 -0400: Publishing: test 2010-04-14 21:45:45 -0400: Publishing: test . . . 2010-04-14 21:45:55 -0400: Publishing: test 2010-04-14 21:45:55 -0400: Publishing: test 2010-04-14 21:45:55 -0400: Publishing: test 2010-04-14 21:45:55 -0400: Publishing: goodbye Next, the output from my subscriber: $ ruby consumer.rb 2010-04-14 21:45:56 -0400: Received test 2010-04-14 21:45:56 -0400: Received hello 2010-04-14 21:45:56 -0400: Received test 2010-04-14 21:45:56 -0400: Received test 2010-04-14 21:45:56 -0400: Received test 2010-04-14 21:45:56 -0400: Received goodbye 2010-04-14 21:45:56 -0400: Received goodbye 2010-04-14 21:45:56 -0400: Received test 2010-04-14 21:45:56 -0400: Received test . . . 2010-04-14 21:45:56 -0400: Received test 2010-04-14 21:45:56 -0400: Received test 2010-04-14 21:45:56 -0400: Received test 2010-04-14 21:45:56 -0400: Received goodbye If you note the timestamps in the output, the subscriber only receives all of the messages once the publisher has stopped AMQP and exited. So, being an AMQP newb, how can I get my messages to deliver immediately? I tried putting AMQP.start and AMQP.stop in the body of the while loop of the publisher, but then only the first message gets delivered -- though strangely, if I turn on logging, there are no error messages reported by the server and the messages do get sent to the queue, but never get received by the subscriber. Suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading.

  • Ruby. Mongoid. Relations

I've encountered some problems with MongoID. I have three models: require 'mongoid' class Configuration include Mongoid::Document belongs_to :user field :links, :type => Array field :root, :type => String field :objects, :type => Array field :categories, :type => Array has_many :entries end class TimeDim include Mongoid::Document field :day, :type => Integer field :month, :type => Integer field :year, :type => Integer field :day_of_week, :type => Integer field :minute, :type => Integer field :hour, :type => Integer has_many :entries end class Entry include Mongoid::Document belongs_to :configuration belongs_to :time_dim field :category, :type => String # any other dynamic fields end Creating documents for Configurations and TimeDims is successful. But when i've trying to execute following code: params = Hash.new params[:configuration] = config # an instance of Configuration from DB entry.each do |key, value| params[key.to_sym] = value # String end unless Entry.exists?(conditions: params) params[:time_dim] = self.generate_time_dim # an instance of TimeDim from DB params[:category] = self.detect_category(descr) # String Entry.new(params).save end ... i saw following output: /home/scepion1d/Workspace/RubyMine/dana-x/.bundle/ruby/1.9.1/gems/bson-1.6.1/lib/bson/bson_c.rb:24:in `serialize': Cannot serialize an object of class Configuration into BSON. I installed ruby-mbox by doing gem install ruby-mbox Running this: #!/usr/bin/ruby require 'rubygems' require 'mbox' m = IO.read('test.eml') puts m.size m = Mbox.new(m) puts m produces this: 71309505 /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/ruby-mbox-0.0.2/lib/mbox/mbox.rb:45:in `initialize': uninitialized constant Mbox::StringIO (NameError) from r.rb:7:in `new' from r.rb:7 I have proved that "m" is assigned a string containing the contents of the file, just before Mbox.new(m) is called. It looks as though the Mbox::StringIO should have been defined by hasn't been. What's going wrong here? Ruby version: ruby 1.8.7 (2009-06-12 patchlevel 174) [universal-darwin10.0] (That's the default ruby installed on OS X 10.6.6)

  • Is it possible to make/translate a 3d engine to ruby on rails?

    - by user20529
I am looking to make a 3D FPS that runs inside web browsers. I looked into using WebGL, but it didn't seem far enough along into development. I decided on using RoR because Ruby was a language I knew. I realize this may seem like a ridiculous question, but is there any way I can port/rewrite/whatever a game engine(Say for instance IrrLicht) to run inside Rails? Or for that matter, any other language on the web.

  • Should I use scaffolding or not in Ruby on Rails?

    - by dpacmittal
I'm learning Ruby on Rails for a new project of mine. I am referring the book 'Agile Web Development with Rails' which shows how to build a shopping cart and they use scaffolding. I'm pretty familiar with MVC architecture and have used several frameworks in PHP to build applications. I've never used scaffolding and I'm not sure if that's the best way to start building an application. Experienced users, please suggest if I should be using scaffolding or should I code manually.

  • Is possible to create an intranet site in Ruby on Rails? [closed]

    - by Akromyk
I'm just coming out of a .Net course and I'm wondering whether it is possible to create an intranet site using Ruby on Rails, and if so, would it even be a good idea. I plan on creating a web site for a vendor that hopes to open up a physical location and it would be beneficial for us to go with a technology that could tie their web front into their intranet for helping them manage orders and logins, but at the same time still have a low cost.

  • How to process a .proto file using protobuf-net

    - by JustSmith
I have stated using the protobuf-net lib to communication between some of the programs I'm maintaining. I have also been able to decode messages from C# to Ruby. My ruby ProtoBuf lib is using a .proto file to generate the ruby code. In the interest of having to make changes in as few places as possible I would like to have protobuf-net use the same .proto file. Looking though the protobuf-net folders there is a Dll named ProtoBufGenerator and the protobuf exe but I cant find any instructions on if I can make protobuf-net work this way. Is this possible?
