• How can I detect and delete all lost configuration folders?

  Over the time there is an increasing number of hidden .configuration folders in my home folder. Many of these come from applications I only installed for testing or from applications that I don't use any more. I would not mind really but these folders do clutter my home, and worse than that sum up to as much as 80 GBytes by now. As there are also applications I never heard of (at least I can't remember I had installed them) I hesitate to delete them. Is there a way to find out which folders came from purged applications? May there even be a way to auto-remove a configuration folder when purging (not removing) the application that created it?

• What is the ideal laptop for creative coding applications?

  Hi, I am a creative coder using C++(cinder and OpenFrameworks) I am looking to upgrade from my MacBook, which slowed down to about 3fps this morning. My project involves particles systems and fluids reacting to audio analysis data and computer vision data in real-time. SD or HD? no biggie. I have asked many people what computer I need. Ideally, I want a MacBook Pro. But is that enough power? I've been told that I need a desktop for what I am doing though I'd rather stay portable I've been told that I should go PC linux to get the most power but I'd rather stay mac I've been told that RAM is more of bottleneck than processor speed I've been told that the Graphics Card is more important than CPU and that code optimizations such as using trees over lists, proper threading, sending tasks to the GPU make a bigger difference than the hardware!!! what's true?! what do I need? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

• Accidentally hit shortcut and lost text in web browser. Can it be disabled?

  I have noticed that I occasionally hit some shortcut while typing that either kills the browser or otherwise causes me to lose e.g. a post I am writing. This typically happens if I type while on a bumpy road or something like that. It also just happened to my eight year old daughter ;-( I think the shortcut in question is CTRL-w which (at least in Firefox) closes the current tab and consequently whatever content is being written. I would like to know if anyone has noticed this and if someone has a solution e.g. a way to disable "dangerous" shortcuts if at all possible. Many thanks Ole (uniomni)

When i was at university we would sometimes come together into a room full of beer and fast food and crank out software in a weekend. Unfortunately the group has kind of split up and its just not possible any more. My question is now: Where can i find like-minded people on the Internet that would like to do something like this? I have an idea what i wanted to do next, but of course other people have ideas too.

• WIN7 and Ubuntu lost after Installing ubuntu 12.04 and win7 dual system ,I have no OS on my laptop now

  Here is the procedure: In the morning I installed ubuntu using a USB directly without config any thing to my win7 system. After install complete, ubuntu installation software tell me to reboot.And everything is just find. While rebooting, there is NO UBUNTU system for me to select,and my laptop go straight to log in using WIN7. NO ubuntu shows on WIN7's configuration(Default System). Log in ubuntu using usb(try ubuntu without installation), I can find ubuntu's filesystem was already there. Formatting the disk on WIN7's disk management, rearranging them to other disk.Still having no trouble with WIN7. In the afternoon try a few times of installation and uninstallation of ubuntu. still shows no sign of selecting ubuntu system. In the evening another trial while installing ubuntu with the third option of: installing ubuntu alongside with INW7, erase win7 and install ubuntu. somethingelse --- my check failed with configuartion for what comes out with the 'something else' option,reboot. And I have no system now with some cmd tips say: Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key. Files those on win7's orginal file system and Ubuntu filesystem can still be found when I 'try ubuntu without installation'. 5.But I just got no OS when I reboot my laptop normally.

• Have I lost my entire Windows drive and all the files?

  I previously had Heron 8.04 installed. Today I decided to upgrade. During the partition phase of the install of 10.10 it asked me what portion of the drive I should use. There were a few options: Drag the partition size to indicate what I wanted to use A button that said use entire partition A button that said use entire drive I selected use entire partition as the Windows partition did not appear on the screen I assumed this was just displaying the existing Ubuntu partition. After install I think I have wiped my entire Windows partition, I can't see it anywhere. I would appreciate some advice as to find if it really is gone forever (My stupidity I didn't back up my Windows partition which includes 3 years of baby photos).

• After a domain change, what can I do to recover lost traffic, rankings, impressions etc? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How do I rename a domain and preserve PageRank? 3 answers I moved my site to a legacy exact-match domain I purchased about a couple of months ago. I have seen significant reduction in traffic, impressions, and rankings. I did all the right steps/best practices: change of address in GWT, map old site hierarchy and match to new site for 301 redirects etc. Indexation has gone through the Google process: old site has all but dissappeared from he index and new site is indexed, albeit with some 404 errors which I am addressing. Does anyone else who has gone through eh domain change process have any thoughts/advice? Thanks!

• How strict are standard employer IP agreements about coding outside of work?

  I'm in negotiations for a position with a large corporation and I'm reading their employment terms. In their IP/copyright section they state that anything that I do outside of work that is "similar" to what I perform on the job is also theirs. I understand that it's intentionally very vague to protect them, but I'm also a little nervous that it could be abused. The way I read it, anything I produce outside of work could be claimed as well, because it would fall under "programming". Is this relatively standard? Could I negotiate more specific terms (I have asked if I could get clarification)? Should I be worried that they could abuse this? I just don't want to be caught in a situation where come up with a (potentially) great idea outside of work and they swoop down and lay claim to it.

  o.k, this is embarrassing: I have installed Compiz Config Settings Manager and tried to fix it so that the transition time between changing tabs (using alt+tab) will be short. by accident I un-pressed V from something else, and it asked me about a conflict - I pressed the "x" button to close the window and as a result I stopped seeing the unity interface. That is - I can not see any buttons of the left side. • How do I reset a lost Administrative(root) password?

  I'm working on a Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) system using a Panasonic CF-50 Laptop. My Client has completely forgotten his Administrative Password. He doesn't even remember entering one; however it is there. I've tried the suggestions on the WebSite and I have been unsuccessful in deleting the password so that I can download applets required for running some files. Do you have a solution?   In TCP Connection Termination, when client enters in TIME_WAIT state means the client waits for a period of time equal to double the maximum segment life (MSL) time, to ensure the ACK it sent was received. TI becomes a pointer to a struct that has a thread index and a pthread_t.   This post is a list of the extensions I recommend for use with Visual Studio 11. It’s coming up all the time – what to install, where are the download sites, last version, etc etc, and thus I thought it better to post it here and keep it updated. The basics are Visual Studio 11 connected to a Team Foundation Server 11. Note that we now are at Beta time, and that also many live in a side-by-side environment with Visual Studio 2010.  The side-by-side is supported by VS 11. However, if you installed a component supporting VS11 before you installed VS11, then you need to reinstall it.  The VSIX installer will understand that it is to apply those only for VS11, and will not touch – nor remove – the same for VS2010. A good example here is the Power Commands. The list is more or less in priority order. The focus is to get a setup which can be used for a complete coding experience for the whole ALM process. The list of course reflects what I use for my work , so it is by no means complete, and for some of the tools there are equally useful alternatives. Many components have not yet arrived with VS11 support.  I will add them as they arrive.  The components directly associated with Visual Studio from Microsoft should be common, see the Microsoft column.   Why every change in Asus UX50v causes screen resolution get lost? Installing a new application, connecting to another wireless network, change some settings, ... causes this problem. For example after installing an application, UX50v needs to restart. And when it got restarted, resolution would be set to 640x480(or 600x800) and Hibernate and Sleep options are disappeared from shutdown menu! (I have other problems with this Asus UX50v crap too - like I can't update windows 7 because it crashes on Asus UX50v crap - but this one is absolutely ridiculous and stupid!)

It has very important information in it and of course, it is gone because of the stupid Windows Update thing....it just automatically closed all of my stuff and restarted my computer!! Would the text file possibly be in the Temp folder in my computer?? I don't know much about this stuff...but I need it. • Mac failing (failed?) hard drive - is all hope lost?

  It's a 500 GB Seagate laptop hard drive that came with my Macbook Pro. Apple partition format. Already replaced and now have it external, connected via SATA/USB adapter. Trying to get just a few files that I worked on while out of town when it crashed (and thus did not have my time machine backup drive). Drive will not mount, but OS X Disk Utility detects it and can read the capacity, model number, and even the name of the partition, which leads me to believe all hope may not be lost. Failed attempts so far: Disk Utility verify+repair says drive cannot be repaired and that I should back up immediately (lovely) Disk Warrior says it cannot rebuild the directory due to hardware failure Data Rescue quick & deep scans immediately failed PhotoRec says "error reading sector" for every sector (at least for the few minutes I let it run before closing it to explore other options) What else can I try here? Again, I'm just looking for a few, small files (python scripts to be specific) - not a full recovery.

  Very weird, i had opened notepad ++ and working on my CSS codes for my website, suddenly my little niece unplugged the computer, when i re-start the computer and opened again the same CSS codes file in notepad ++, so all i am seeing is "NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL" there is no codes, all lost. I opened the same CSS codes file in other editors and its all empty no codes.. is there a way to fix it, because it was my hard work. and what can be the cause? Thank you.

  I am in serious trouble and I am seeking professional advices here. We are using MSSQL server 2008. We removed primary key, replaced exiting data with new data resulted losing our critical business data in its child tables on MSSQL Server. It was completely human mistake and we didn't have disk failure. 1) The last backup file was a month ago which means it is useless. 2) We created Maintenance Plans to backup our database at 12AM everyday but those files are nohwere to be found 3) A friend of mine said we can recover from Transaction Logs. When I go to TaskRestore Transaction log is dimmed/disabled. 4) I checked ManagementMaintenance Plans. I can't find any restored point there. It seems that our maintenance plan hasn't been working. Is there any third party tool to recover lost/overwritten data from MSSQL table? Thanks a lot.

• Chaning coding style due to Android GC performance, how far is too far?

  I keep hearing that Android applications should try to limit the number of objects created in order to reduce the workload on the garbage collector. It makes sense that you may not want to created massive numbers of objects to track on a limited memory footprint, for example on a traditional server application created 100,000 objects within a few seconds would not be unheard of. The problem is how far should I take this? I've seen tons of examples of Android applications relying on static state in order supposedly "speed things up". Does increasing the number of instances that need to be garbage collected from dozens to hundreds really make that big of a difference? I can imagine changing my coding style to now created hundreds of thousands of objects like you might have on a full-blown Java-EE server but relying on a bunch of static state to (supposedly) reduce the number of objects to be garbage collected seems odd. How much is it really necessary to change your coding style in order to create performance Android apps?
