  • AWS Amazon EC2 - password-less SSH login for non-root users using PEM keypairs

    - by Mark White
    We've got a couple of clusters running on AWS (HAProxy/Solr, PGPool/PostgreSQL) and we've setup scripts to allow new slave instances to be auto-included into the clusters by updating their IPs to config files held on S3, then SSHing to the master instance to kick them to download the revised config and restart the service. It's all working nicely, but in testing we're using our master pem for SSH which means it needs to be stored on an instance. Not good. I want a non-root user that can use an AWS keypair who will have sudo access to run the download-config-and-restart scripts, but nothing else. rbash seems to be the way to go, but I understand this can be insecure unless setup correctly. So what security holes are there in this approach: New AWS keypair created for user.pem (not really called 'user') New user on instances: user Public key for user is in ~user/.ssh/authorized_keys (taken by creating new instance with user.pem, and copying it from /root/.ssh/authorized_keys) Private key for user is in ~user/.ssh/user.pem 'user' has login shell of /home/user/bin/rbash ~user/bin/ contains symbolic links to /bin/rbash and /usr/bin/sudo /etc/sudoers has entry "user ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: ~user/.bashrc sets PATH to /home/user/bin/ only ~user/.inputrc has 'set disable-completion on' to prevent double tabbing from 'sudo /' to find paths. ~user/ -R is owned by root with read-only access to user, except for ~user/.ssh which has write access for user (for writing known_hosts), and ~user/bin/* which are +x Inter-instance communication uses 'ssh -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -i ~user/.ssh/user.pem user@ sudo ' Any thoughts would be welcome. • Finalizing a Cursor that has not been deactivated or closed non-fatal error

    - by arnold
    Hello all, i'm getting a "Finalizing a Cursor that has not been deactivated or closed" error on this piece of code. The code is used to fill a listview. Since it's a non-fatal error , there is no crash and all seems to works fine..but i don't like the error. If i close the cursor at the end of this code..the listview stay's empty. if i close the cursor in onStop , i get the same error. How do i fix this?? private void updateList() { DBAdapter db = new DBAdapter(this); db.open(); //load all waiting alarm mCursor=db.getTitles("state<2"); setListAdapter(new MyCursorAdapter(this, mCursor)); registerForContextMenu(getListView()); db.close(); } error : E/Cursor ( 2318): Finalizing a Cursor that has not been deactivated or closed. database = /data/data/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.db, table = alerts, query = SELECT _id, alert_id, E/Cursor ( 2318): android.database.sqlite.DatabaseObjectNotClosedException: Application did not close the cursor or database object that was opened here E/Cursor ( 2318): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteCursor.<init>(SQLiteCursor.java:210) E/Cursor ( 2318): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDirectCursorDriver.query(SQLiteDirectCursorDriver.java: 53) E/Cursor ( 2318): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.rawQueryWithFactory(SQLiteDatabase.java: 1345) E/Cursor ( 2318): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.queryWithFactory(SQLiteDatabase.java: 1229) .... ....

  • MFMailComposeController crashing non-deterministically

    - by sss
    Hello, I've been struggling with this issue for a few days. I am trying to use the MFMailComposeController to send emails. What's happening is that the program crashes (long stack-trace below) upon clicking the SEND button. However, this is non-deterministic - sometimes it works immediately, sometimes after a long delay, and most often, it crashes. Here's my code for sending: -(void)mailWithAttachment:(NSString *) fileName type:(NSString*) attachmentType data:(NSData *) attachmentData { MFMailComposeViewController *mc = [[MFMailComposeViewController alloc] init]; mc.mailComposeDelegate = self; if ([MFMailComposeViewController canSendMail]) { [mc setSubject:@"my subject"]; [mc setMessageBody:@"my body" isHTML:YES]; [mc addAttachmentData:attachmentData mimeType:attachmentType fileName:fileName]; [self presentModalViewController:mc animated:YES]; } [mc release]; } didFinish result looks like you'd imagine: -(void)mailComposeController:(MFMailComposeViewController*)controller didFinishWithResult:(MFMailComposeResult)result error:(NSError*)error { [self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES]; //...some other actions here for other UI logic, but problem persists if removed } And the definition of the class: @interface ShareViewController : UIViewController { //... } Here's the stack trace: #0 0x33568534 in gdb_objc_debuggerModeFailure #1 0x3356634e in _rwlock_write_nodebug #2 0x33560940 in map_images #3 0x2fe0413e in __dyld__ZN4dyldL18notifyBatchPartialE17dyld_image_statesbPFPKcS0_jPK15dyld_image_infoE #4 0x2fe042d4 in __dyld__ZN4dyldL11notifyBatchE17dyld_image_states #5 0x2fe0aee0 in __dyld__ZN11ImageLoader4linkERKNS_11LinkContextEbbRKNS_10RPathChainE #6 0x2fe062d6 in __dyld__ZN4dyld4linkEP11ImageLoaderbRKNS0_10RPathChainE #7 0x2fe08188 in __dyld_dlopen #8 0x30c18fd0 in dlopen #9 0x0000390c in <function called from gdb> #10 0x3356628e in getMethodNoSuper_nolock #11 0x335662b8 in _class_getMethodNoSuper_nolock #12 0x3356518a in lookUpMethod #13 0x33562914 in _class_lookupMethodAndLoadCache #14 0x3356264a in objc_msgSend_uncached #15 0x33562a2a in _class_initialize #16 0x33567dfe in prepareForMethodLookup #17 0x33565168 in lookUpMethod #18 0x33562914 in _class_lookupMethodAndLoadCache #19 0x3356264a in objc_msgSend_uncached #20 0x32b2c288 in +[NSTimeZone(NSTimeZone) defaultTimeZone] #21 0x32b2c246 in -[NSCalendarDate initWithTimeIntervalSinceReferenceDate:] #22 0x32b3beb4 in -[NSDate(NSCalendarDateStuff) descriptionWithCalendarFormat:timeZone:locale:] #23 0x323642fc in -[NSDate(Goodies) descriptionForMimeHeaders] #24 0x32a6e812 in -[MailComposeController headersUseSuspendInfo:] #25 0x32a71e38 in -[MailComposeController messageUseSuspendInfo:endingEditing:] #26 0x32a6e594 in -[MailComposeController _getMessage:] #27 0x32a6e536 in -[MailComposeController message] #28 0x32a72bcc in -[MailComposeController deliverMessageRemotely] #29 0x32a7cab0 in -[_MFMailComposeRootViewController mailComposeControllerCompositionFinished:] #30 0x32a6e0a0 in -[MailComposeController sendMessage] #31 0x32a7086a in -[MailComposeController send:] #32 0x32c29ffa in -[NSObject performSelector:withObject:] #33 0x32a661cc in -[MailComposeView _sendButtonClicked:] I've tried the MFMailComposeController as a child of different views with the same result.   • "Permission denied to access property 'href' from a non-chrome context" in JavaScript and OpenLayers

    - by Mark Iliffe
    This is really two questions one leading into the other. Firstly what does 'Permission denied to access property 'href' from a non-chrome context' actually mean? Secondly I am using overlays in OpenLayers and wish to change the opacity of said layers, this is where this error is being thrown the code of which is here... <input id='opacity' value="1.0" onChange="changeOpacity()"> Of which changeOpacity() is the following function... function changeOpacity() { var newOpacity = parseFloat(OpenLayers.Util.getElement('opacity').value); newOpacity = Math.min(1.0, Math.max(0.1, newOpacity)); OpenLayers.Util.getElement('opacity').value = newOpacity; for (var i=0; i<images.length; i++) { layers[images[i]].setOpacity(newOpacity); } } which throws the error at "var href = originalElement.href;" here... function mD(e) { //what is originalElement/srcElement/originalTarget? var originalElement = e.srcElement || e.originalTarget; var href = originalElement.href; if (originalElement.nodeName == "A" && href.match("http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/")) { href = href.replace('http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/','http://www.openstreetmap.org/api/0.6/'); if (gml) { map.removeLayer(gml); } //$("status").innerHTML = 'loading'; } gml = new OpenLayers.Layer.GML("OSM", href, {format: OpenLayers.Format.OSM}); map.addLayer(gml); gml.preFeatureInsert = style_osm_feature; var sf = new OpenLayers.Control.SelectFeature(gml, {'onSelect': on_feature_hover}); map.addControl(sf); sf.activate(); return false; } } Any help/ideas is great appreciated! I am using firefox 3.5.9 and firebug 1.5.4

  • Non-deprecated code for detecting whether a SharePoint User has a specific Permission Level

    - by ccomet
    In our application, we have some forms which need to show some data specifically if the current user has a specific permission level. These users belong to an SPGroup which includes users who should not see this data, so in this particular case I cannot filter based off of group membership. My current solution has been to use web.CurrentUser.Roles and use a simple check on whether it contains a permission level of the correct name. Roles is of the deprecated SPRole class, so I am bombarded with warning messages despite the fact it technically works. It suggests that I use SPRoleAssignment or SPRoleDefinition (the recommendation seems arbitrary since some lines recommend one while others recommend the other even though it is being used for the same thing). However, I cannot seem to find any method to directly retrieve an SPRoleAssignment or SPRoleDefinition object from an SPUser or SPPrincipal object, nor can I retrieve either object corresponding specifically to the current user of the SPWeb object. How can I update these methods to use non-deprecated code? I've found other cases of determining user permissions, but I haven't found one that will work from a starting point of the current web or the current user. It's not urgent, but it certainly is helpful to avoid having to sift through all of those warnings just to reach the more important warnings.

I write this function to get root of tree to be used in sameTree() function, to help comparison of "this" with given tree. Perhaps this is a OOP design issue... How should I restructure the above code that I do not get this warning and what is the concept I am missing here?

  • Problem with non blocking fifo in bash

    - by timdel
    Hi! I'm running a few Team Fortress 2 servers and I want to write a little management script. Basically the TF2 servers are a fg process which provides a server console, so I can start the server, type status and get an answer from it: ***@purple:~/tf2$ ./start_server_testing Auto detecting CPU Using AMD Optimised binary. Server will auto-restart if there is a crash. Console initialized. [bla bla bla] Connection to Steam servers successful. VAC secure mode is activated. status hostname: Team Fortress version : 1.0.6.1/15 3883 secure udp/ip : ***.***.133.31:27600 map : ctf_2fort at: 0 x, 0 y, 0 z players : 0 (2 max) # userid name uniqueid connected ping loss state adr Great, now I want to create a script which sends the command sm_reloadadmins to all my servers. The best way I found to do this is using a fifo named pipe. Now what I want to do is having this pipe readonly and non blocking to the server process, so I can write into the pipe and the server executes it, but still I want to write via console one the server, so if I switch back to the fg process of the server and I type status I want an answer printed. I tried this (assuming serverfifo is mkfifo serverfifo): ./start_server_testing < serverfifo Not working, the server won't start until something is written to the pipe. ./start_server_testing <> serverfifo Thats actually working pretty good, I can see the console output of the server and I can write to the fifo and the server executes the commands, but I can't write via console to the server anymore. Also, if I write 'exit' to the pipe (which should end the server) and I'm running it in a screen the screen window is getting killed for some reason (wtf why?). I only need the server to read the fifo without blocking AND all my keyboard input on the server itself should be send to the server AND all server ouput should be written to the console. Is that possible? If yes, how?

  • Using maven-release-plugin to tag and commit to non-origin

    - by Ali G
    When I do a release of my project, I want to share the source with a wider group of people than I normally do during development. The code is shared via a Git repository. To do this, I have used the following: remote public repository - released code is pushed here, every week or so (http://example.com/public) remote private repository - non-release code is pushed here, more than daily (http://example.com/private) In my local git repository, I have the following remotes defined: origin http://example.com/private public http://example.com/public I am currently trying to configure the maven-release-plugin to manage versioning of the builds, and to manage tagging and pushing of code to the public repository. In my pom.xml, I have listed the <scm/ as follows: <scm><connection>scm:git:http://example.com/public</connection></scm> (Removing this line will cause mvn release:prepare to fail) However, when calling mvn release:clean release:prepare release:perform Maven calls git push origin tagname rather than pushing to the URL specified in the POM. So the questions are: Best practice: Should I just be tagging and committing in my private repo (origin), and pushing to public manually? Can I make Maven push to the repository that I choose, rather than defaulting to origin? I felt this was implied by the requirement of the <connection/ element in <scm/.

  • Non RBAC User Roles and Permissions System: checking the user's City

    - by micha12
    We are currently designing a User Roles and Permissions System in our web application (ASP.NET), and it seems that we have several cases that do no fit within the classical Role-Based Access Control (RBAC). I will post several questions, each devoted to a particular case, this being the first post. We have the following case: not to allow a user view a certain page if the user lives in a particular city. This is a simple case that is coded in the following way: if (User.City == “Moscow”) // Allow the user to view the page. else // Do not allow the user to view this page. Though this case is very simple and straightforward, it has nothing to do with the RBAC. On StackOverflow, someone called this an Attribute-based Access Control. Under the classical RBAC, it seems that this case should be designed like this: introduce a permission “City where the person lives”, this permission will have a property City. Then create a role, add a permission of type “City = Moscow” to it and the assign the role to the user. Looks extremely cumbersome. The question is whether it is acceptable to introduce such non-RBAC approaches to our permissions system – does that break the design or not? This might seem a primitive question, but we found that most applications use pure RBAC, and we started to think that we might be doing something wrong. Thank you.

  • How to solve non-linear equations using python

    - by stars83clouds
    I have the following code: #!/usr/bin/env python from scipy.optimize import fsolve import math h = 6.634e-27 k = 1.38e-16 freq1 = 88633.9360e6 freq2 = 88631.8473e6 freq3 = 88630.4157e6 def J(freq,T): return (h*freq/k)/(math.exp(h*freq/(k*T))-1) def equations(x,y,z,w,a,b,c,d): f1 = a*(J(freq1,y)-J(freq1,2.73))*(1-math.exp(-a*z))-(J(freq2,x)-J(freq2,2.73))*(1-math.exp(-z)) f2 = b*(J(freq3,w)-J(freq3,2.73))*(1-math.exp(-b*z))-(J(freq2,x)-J(freq2,2.73))*(1-math.exp(-z)) f3 = c*(J(freq3,w)-J(freq3,2.73))*(1-math.exp(-b*z))-(J(freq1,y)-J(freq1,2.73))*(1-math.exp(-a*z)) f4 = d*(J((freq3+freq1)/2,(y+w)/2)-J((freq3+freq1)/2,2.73))-(J(freq2,x)-J(freq2,2.73))*(1-math.exp(-z)) return (f1,f2,f3,f4) So, I have defined the equations in the above code. However, I now wish to solve the above set of equations using fsolve or other alternative non-linear numerical routine. I tried the following syntax but with no avail: x,y,z,w = fsolve(equations, (1,1,1,1)) I keep getting the error that "x" is not defined. I am executing all commands at the command-line, since I have no idea how to run a batch of commands as above automatically in python. I welcome any advice on how to solve this.

  • Adobe AIR non-Administrator application installation/upgrade on Windows

    - by bzlm
    Is there any way to allow non-Administrator users to install, upgrade or uninstall an Adobe AIR application on Windows? I've made an Adobe AIR application and packaged it as a .air package using the standard AIR mechanism for creating deployment packages. If a normal or Power user tries to install this AIR application, the Application Event Log shows an error saying administrative rights are required. And even if the user elevates during installation, administrative rights are still required for an upgrade using the automated AIR upgrade system (since an upgrade is essentially, behind the scenes, an uninstallation of a .msi package followed by an installation of another .msi package). Is there any way around this? What I've tried so far is: Using the Group Policy editor, setting Windows Installer to elevate during installations. Doesn't work, since AIR attempts a "for all users" installation. Specifying My Documents as the installation directory. Doesn't work, since AIR attempts a "for all users" installation. Giving the user Modify access to the Program Files folder where the application would usually reside. Doesn't work, since this isn't a file permissions issue. Making the user a Power User. Doesn't work, since AIR attempts a "for all users" installation. I'm guessing that both installing and upgrading would work fine for a user if the AIR installer would attempt to make an "only for me" application installation instead of a "for all users" installation, and the user was a Power User, and possibly the application was installed to My Documents I'm also guessing that this problem doesn't exist on OSX and Linux, since they have more intuitive concepts for per-user application installations.

  • Connecting repeatable and non-repeatble backgrounds without a seam

    - by Stiggler
    I have a 700x300 background repeating seamlessly inside of the main content-div. Now I'd like to attach a div at the bottom of the content-div, containing a different background image that isn't repeatable, connecting seamlessly with the repeatable background above it. Essentially, the non-repeatable image will look like the end piece of the repeatable image. Due to the nature of the pattern, unless the full 300px height of the background image is visible in the last repeat of the content-div's backround, the background in the div below won't seamlessly connect. Basically, I need the content div's height to be a multiple of 300px under all circumstances. What's a good approach to this sort of problem? I've tried resizing the content-div on loading the page, but this only works as long as the content div doesn't contain any resizing, dynamic content, which is not my case: function adjustContentHeight() { // Setting content div's height to nearest upper multiple of column backgrounds height, // forcing it not to be cut-off when repeated. var contentBgHeight = 300; var contentHeight = $("#content").height(); var adjustedHeight = Math.ceil(contentHeight / contentBgHeight); $("#content").height(adjustedHeight * contentBgHeight); } $(document).ready(adjustContentHeight); What I'm looking for there is a way to respond to a div resizing event, but there doesn't seem to be such a thing. Also, please assume I have no access to the JS controlling the resizing of content in the content-div, though this is potentially a way of solving the problem. Another potential solution I was thinking off was to offset the background image in the bottom div by a certain amount depending on the height of the content-div. Again, the missing piece seems to be the ability to respond to a resize event.

  • Problem using custom HttpHandler to process requests for both .aspx and non-extension pages in IIS7

    - by Noel
    I am trying to process both ".aspx" and non-extension page requests (i.e. both contact.aspx and /contact/) using a custom HttpHandler in IIS7. My handler works just fine in either one case or the other, but as soon as I try to process both cases, it only works for one. Please see Handlers snippet from my web.config below: If i keep only mapping to "*.aspx" then all .aspx requests are processed correctly, but obviously extensionless requests won't work: <add name="AllPages.ASPX" path="*.aspx" verb="*" type="Test.PageHandlerFactory, Test" preCondition="" /> If i change the mapping to "*" then all extensionless requests are processed correctly, but ".aspx" requests that should still be handled by this handler stop working. Note that i added the StaticFiles entry in order to process files that are on disk like images, css, js, etc. <add name="WebResource" path="WebResource.axd" verb="GET" type="System.Web.Handlers.AssemblyResourceLoader" /> <add name="StaticFiles" verb="GET,HEAD" path="*.*" type="System.Web.StaticFileHandler" resourceType="File" /> <add name="AllPages" path="*" verb="*" type="Test.PageHandlerFactory, Test" preCondition="" /> The crazy thing is that when i load an ".aspx" request (with the 2nd configuration shown) IIS7 gives a 404 not found error. The error also says that the request is processed by the StaticFiles handler. But I made sure to add resourceType="File" to the StaticFileHandler in order to avoid this. According to MS this means the request is only for "physical files on disk". Am i misreading/interpreting the "on disk" part? My .aspx file isn't on disk, that's why i want to use the handler in the first place.

  • trying to make a simple grid-class, non-lvalue in assignment

    - by Tyrfing
    I'm implementing a simple C++ grid class. One Function it should support is accessed through round brackets, so that I can access the elements by writing mygrid(0,0). I overloaded the () operator and i am getting the error message: "non-lvalue in assignment". what I want to be able to do: //main cGrid<cA*> grid(5, 5); grid(0,0) = new cA(); excerpt of my implementation of the grid class: template class cGrid { private: T* data; int mWidth; int mHeight; public: cGrid(int width, int height) : mWidth(width), mHeight(height) { data = new T[width*height]; } ~cGrid() { delete data; } T operator ()(int x, int y) { if (x >= 0 && x <= mWidth) { if (y >= 0 && y <= mHeight) { return data[x + y * mWidth]; } } } const T &operator ()(int x, int y) const { if (x >= 0 && x <= mWidth) { if (y >= 0 && y <= mHeight) { return data[x + y * mWidth]; } } } The rest of the code deals with the implementation of an iterator and should not be releveant.

  • Lazy non-modifiable list in Google Collections

    - by mindas
    I was looking for a decent implementation of a generic lazy non-modifiable list implementation to wrap my search result entries. The unmodifiable part of the task is easy as it can be achieved by Collections.unmodifiableList() so I only need to sort out the the lazy part. Surprisingly, google-collections doesn't have anything to offer; while LazyList from Apache Commons Collections does not support generics. I have found an attempt to build something on top of google-collections but it seems to be incomplete (e.g. does not support size()), outdated (does not compile with 1.0 final) and requiring some external classes, but could be used as a good starting point to build my own class. Is anybody aware of any good implementation of a LazyList? If not, which option do you think is better: write my own implementation, based on google-collections ForwardingList, similar to what Peter Maas did; write my own wrapper around Commons Collections LazyList (the wrapper would only add generics so I don't have to cast everywhere but only in the wrapper itself); just write something on top of java.util.AbstractList; Any other suggestions are welcome.

  • Mapping self-table one-to-many using non-PK clolumns

    - by Harel Moshe
    Hey, i have a legacy DB to which a Person object is mapped, having a collection of family-members, like this: class Person { ... string Id; /* 9-digits string */ IList<Person> Family; ... } The PERSON table seems like: Id: CHAR(9), PK FamilyId: INT, NOT NULL and several other non-relevant columns. I'm trying to map the Family collection to the PERSON table using the FamilyId column, which is not the PK as mentioned above. So, i actually have a one-to-many which is self-table-referential. I'm getting an error saying 'Cast is not valid' when my mapping looks like this: ... <set name="Family" table="Person" lazy="false"> <key column="FamilyId" /> <one-to-many class="Person" /> </set> ... because obviously, the join NHibernate is trying to make is between the PK column, Id, and the 'secondary' column, FamilyId, instead of joining the FamilyId column to itself. Any ideas please?

  • How to improve performance of non-scalar aggregations on denormalized tables

    - by The Lazy DBA
    Suppose we have a denormalized table with about 80 columns, and grows at the rate of ~10 million rows (about 5GB) per month. We currently have 3 1/2 years of data (~400M rows, ~200GB). We create a clustered index to best suit retrieving data from the table on the following columns that serve as our primary key... [FileDate] ASC, [Region] ASC, [KeyValue1] ASC, [KeyValue2] ASC ... because when we query the table, we always have the entire primary key. So these queries always result in clustered index seeks and are therefore very fast, and fragmentation is kept to a minimum. However, we do have a situation where we want to get the most recent FileDate for every Region, typically for reports, i.e. SELECT [Region] , MAX([FileDate]) AS [FileDate] FROM HugeTable GROUP BY [Region] The "best" solution I can come up to this is to create a non-clustered index on Region. Although it means an additional insert on the table during loads, the hit isn't minimal (we load 4 times per day, so fewer than 100,000 additional index inserts per load). Since the table is also partitioned by FileDate, results to our query come back quickly enough (200ms or so), and that result set is cached until the next load. However I'm guessing that someone with more data warehousing experience might have a solution that's more optimal, as this, for some reason, doesn't "feel right".

  • Munging non-printable characters to dots using string.translate()

    - by Jim Dennis
    So I've done this before and it's a surprising ugly bit of code for such a seemingly simple task. The goal is to translate any non-printable character into a . (dot). For my purposes "printable" does exclude the last few characters from string.printable (new-lines, tabs, and so on). This is for printing things like the old MS-DOS debug "hex dump" format ... or anything similar to that (where additional whitespace will mangle the intended dump layout). I know I can use string.translate() and, to use that, I need a translation table. So I use string.maketrans() for that. Here's the best I could come up with: filter = string.maketrans( string.translate(string.maketrans('',''), string.maketrans('',''),string.printable[:-5]), '.'*len(string.translate(string.maketrans('',''), string.maketrans('',''),string.printable[:-5]))) ... which is an unreadable mess (though it does work). From there you can call use something like: for each_line in sometext: print string.translate(each_line, filter) ... and be happy. (So long as you don't look under the hood). Now it is more readable if I break that horrid expression into separate statements: ascii = string.maketrans('','') # The whole ASCII character set nonprintable = string.translate(ascii, ascii, string.printable[:-5]) # Optional delchars argument filter = string.maketrans(nonprintable, '.' * len(nonprintable)) And it's tempting to do that just for legibility. However, I keep thinking there has to be a more elegant way to express this!

  • In .NET, What Is Fastest Way to Initialize Multi-Dimensional Array to Non-Default Value

    - by AMissico
    How do I initialize a multi-dimensional array of a primitive type as fast as possible? I am stuck with using multi-dimensional arrays. My problem is performance. The following routine initializes a 100x100 array in approx. 500 ticks. Removing the int.MaxValue initialization results in approx. 180 ticks just for the looping. Approximately 100 ticks to create the array without looping and without initializing to int.MaxValue. Routines similiar to this are called a few tens-of-thousands to several million times. I am open to suggestions on how to optimize this non-default initialization of an array. One idea I had is to use a smaller primitive type when available. For instance, using byte instead of int, saves 100 ticks. I would be happy with this, but I am hoping that I don't have to change the primitive data type. public int[,] CreateArray(Size size) { int[,] array = new int[size.Width, size.Height]; for (int x = 0; x < size.Width; x++) { for (int y = 0; y < size.Height; y++) { array[x, y] = int.MaxValue; } } return array; }

  • Patterns for non-layered applications

    - by Paul Stovell
    In Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture, Martin Fowler writes: This book is thus about how you decompose an enterprise application into layers and how those layers work together. Most nontrivial enterprise applications use a layered architecture of some form, but in some situations other approaches, such as pipes and filters, are valuable. I don't go into those situations, focussing instead on the context of a layered architecture because it's the most widely useful. What patterns exist for building non-layered applications/parts of an application? Take a statistical modelling engine for a financial institution. There might be a layer for data access, but I expect that most of the code would be in a single layer. Would you still expect to see Gang of Four patterns in such a layer? How about a domain model? Would you use OO at all, or would it be purely functional? The quote mentions pipes and filters as alternate models to layers. I can easily imagine a such an engine using pipes as a way to break down the data processing. What other patterns exist? Are there common patterns for areas like task scheduling, results aggregation, or work distribution? What are some alternatives to MapReduce?

  • Calculating confidence intervals for a non-normal distribution

    - by Josiah
    Hi all, First, I should specify that my knowledge of statistics is fairly limited, so please forgive me if my question seems trivial or perhaps doesn't even make sense. I have data that doesn't appear to be normally distributed. Typically, when I plot confidence intervals, I would use the mean +- 2 standard deviations, but I don't think that is acceptible for a non-uniform distribution. My sample size is currently set to 1000 samples, which would seem like enough to determine if it was a normal distribution or not. I use Matlab for all my processing, so are there any functions in Matlab that would make it easy to calculate the confidence intervals (say 95%)? I know there are the 'quantile' and 'prctile' functions, but I'm not sure if that's what I need to use. The function 'mle' also returns confidence intervals for normally distributed data, although you can also supply your own pdf. Could I use ksdensity to create a pdf for my data, then feed that pdf into the mle function to give me confidence intervals? Also, how would I go about determining if my data is normally distributed. I mean I can currently tell just by looking at the histogram or pdf from ksdensity, but is there a way to quantitatively measure it? Thanks!

  • Temporary non-const istream reference in constructor (C++)

    - by Christopher Bruns
    It seems that a constructor that takes a non-const reference to an istream cannot be constructed with a temporary value in C++. #include <iostream> #include <sstream> using namespace std; class Bar { public: explicit Bar(std::istream& is) {} }; int main() { istringstream stream1("bar1"); Bar bar1(stream1); // OK on all platforms // compile error on linux, Mac gcc; OK on Windows MSVC Bar bar2(istringstream("bar2")); return 0; } This compiles fine with MSVC, but not with gcc. Using gcc I get a compile error: g++ test.cpp -o test test.cpp: In function ‘int main()’: test.cpp:18: error: no matching function for call to ‘Bar::Bar(std::istringstream)’ test.cpp:9: note: candidates are: Bar::Bar(std::istream&) test.cpp:7: note: Bar::Bar(const Bar&) Is there something philosophically wrong with the second way (bar2) of constructing a Bar object? It looks nicer to me, and does not require that stream1 variable that is only needed for a moment.

  • Call to a member function num_rows() on a non-object

    - by Patrick
    I need to get the number of rows of a query (so I can paginate results). As I'm learning codeigniter (and OO php) I wanted to try and chain a -num_rows() to the query, but it doesn't work: //this works: $data['count'] = count($this->events->findEvents($data['date'], $data['keyword'])); //the following doesn't work and generates // Fatal Error: Call to a member function num_rows() on a non-object $data['count2'] = $this->events->findEvents($data['date'], $data['keyword'])->num_rows(); the model returns an array of objects, and I think this is the reason why I can't use a method on it. function findEvents($date, $keyword, $limit = NULL, $offset = NULL) { $data = array(); $this->db->select('events.*, venues.*, events.venue AS venue_id'); $this->db->join('venues', 'events.venue = venues.id'); if ($date) { $this->db->where('date', $date); } if ($keyword) { $this->db->like('events.description', $keyword); $this->db->or_like('venues.description', $keyword); $this->db->or_like('band', $keyword); $this->db->or_like('venues.venue', $keyword); $this->db->or_like('genre', $keyword); } $this->db->order_by('date', 'DESC'); $this->db->order_by('events.priority', 'DESC'); $this->db->limit($limit, $offset); //for pagination purposes $Q = $this->db->get('events'); if ($Q->num_rows() > 0) { foreach ($Q->result() as $row) { $data[] = $row; } } $Q->free_result(); return $data; } Is there anything that i can do to be able to use it? EG, instead of $data[] = $row; I should use another (OO) syntax?
