• Can I use all my RAM for application data?

  Hi! I have yet another question about "where is my Linux memory" Question goes: can I use cache for application data? On my laptop I have 1GB ram. Situation after some time of work: browser takes 400MB and all other apps caa 300MB (quickly summed in system monitor). System monitor says I use 90% of RAM and I have already 200MB on swap. Laptop is getting slower when I start new things (e.g. open new tab in browser or open new Nautilus window). probably putting memory on swap So there should be 1200MB (ram+swap) used but all app I see uses only 600MB. Where are other 600MB? Out of this 600MB there is 400MB real RAM. I am not copying or any other massive IO activity. I read about Linux smartly uses all ram it has using buffers and cache. So, kernel (cache) uses 300MB. What if I don't want to have disk mirrored and I want to use memory for application data (e.g. new browser tab)? I don't need 200MB of mirrored disk data, because I (for example) won't use open the same photos on data partition I just seen. So can I use all my RAM for application data? (including browser, desktop, xorg, other services). How?

• Search inside Xournal files (.xoj)

  I'm a big fan of Evernote, I use it regularly. However, it has a 60MB storage limit (although text files are not going to occupy much space, but the limitation concern still remains). Today, I installed Xournal, which has great features like annotating, nice background, free hand shapes and notes, save in PDF format, and many more. But the big problem is that as far as I've noticd, there is no intrinsic feature for seach inside the notes (created using Xournal with .xoj suffix). I used Catfish File Search application (which creates bash commands for full text search), but it couldn't help as well. Is there anyway to search inside a .xoj file at all? If so, it could be a suitable alternative to evernote, if you put your .xoj files on a cloud (which certainly offers you much more storage space than 60MB). If not, is there any other convenient app similar to Evernote, but with higher storage limit or without a limit? Somebody suggested Zim desktop wiki app, which looks great, but I'm nut sure if I could copy and paste everything there (a mixture of photos and tables and text with various formats and highlights), like what I do with Evernote. And a very useful tool I use is Evernote Web Clipper (browser extension). Of course, having a desktop client like Everpad is a plus, but not the absolute need. PS: I use pocket, so please do suggest that (it only preserve links (which might change over time) not the actual text). I also use google drive or docs, I don't like that for this purpose niether, it's too slow, doesn't have a browser extension and a desktop client. Thank you so much in advance.

This clever electronics hack adds a sensor to your computer for motion-based monitor activation. At the DIY and electronics blog Radio Etcetera they tackled an interesting project and shared the build guide. • Using orientation to calculate position on Windows Phone 7

  I'm using the motion API and I'm trying to figure out a control scheme for the game I'm currently developing. What I'm trying to achive is for a orienation of the device to correlate directly to a position. Such that tilting the phone forward and to the left represents the top left position and back to the right would be the bottom right position. Photos to make it clearer (the red dot would be the calculated position). Forward and Left Back and Right Now for the tricky bit. I also have to make sure that the values take into account left landscape and right landscape device orientations (portrait is the default so no calculations would be needed for it). Has anyone done anything like this? Notes: I've tried using the yaw, pitch, roll and Quaternion readings. • Is what someone publishes on the Internet fair game when considering them for employment as a programmer?

  (Originally posted on Stack Overflow but closed there and more relevant for here) So we first interviewed a guy for a technical role and he was pretty good. Before the second interview we googled him and found his MySpace page which could, to put it mildly, be regarded as inappropriate. Just to be clear there was no doubt that it was his page (name, photos, matching biographical information and so on). The content was entirely personal and in no way related to his professional abilities or attitude. Is it fair to consider this when thinking about whether to offer them a job? In most situations my response would be what goes on in someone's private life is their own doing. However for anyone technical who professes (implicitly or explicitly) to understand the Internet and the possibilities it offers, is posting things in a way which can so obviously be discovered a significant error of judgement? EDIT: Clarification - essentially it was a fairly graphic commentary on porn (but of, shall we say, a non-academic nature). I'm actually more interested in the general concept than the specific incident as it's something we're likely to see more in the future as people put more and more of themselves on-line. My concerns are not primarily about him and how he feels about such things (he's white, straight, male and about the last possible victim of discrimination on the planet in that sense), more how it reflects on the company that a very simple search (basically his name) returns these things and that clients may also do it. We work in a relatively conservative industry.

• Why does apt-get install Skype easily while aptitude complains about MAJOR dependency errors?

  I was trying to install Skype on Ubuntu 13.04, from the Canonical repositories. With apt-get it worked easily, while aptitude had a huge problem with dependencies and proposed a complicated solution. Why is this so?   At first I must apologize, because I am not sure if this question is valid for webmasters topic. I deal with the problem as being webmaster, however, i think this question is more related with marketing. Nevertheless, I was searching for marketing stack-overflow at meta stack-overflow and did not find such page. Background Four days ago, I launched a portal with database of barber salons at which people can find a salon through various criterions, see its photos, details, and also put a comment with their own opinion. The development took me half a year and it took me other 2 months to fill the database with information about barbers (I've also hired another three people to this job). I have not a big problem with getting people to my portal, I pay for PPC, comment on barber discussions etc.. In past four days I've reached a satisfactory number of visitors. Problem I deal with fact that everyone wants to search and read comments, but no one is willing to put her/his own opinion to barber. So I've tried following (2 days ago): Made comment anonymous, no one has to be afraid of compromise her/his identity with a salon owner I prepared a competition for users in which they can win a cosmetic package if they comment on at least three different salons I payed for PPC campaign on facebook which is telling people about the competition I registered competition on 20 portals for competitions And the result: People are commenting on facebook that the competition is a good idea They are giving likes on facebook But no one put a single comment to a barber salon I am getting little confused about what am I doing wrong. I will be thankful for any advice.

• What kind of website or coding is suitable and safe for an artist's website

  I have a web design project that is related to a singer, and I used Joomla for my previous project and designed good music websites. But for this project I cannot find a suitable template to edit and use. As the website is so simple and does not have any special functionality, I'm thinking about creating a website with just simple CSS, html and jQuery. I'm Good at them and can make a perfect look but I am not sure about the security. In Joomla I use different security plugins but do not know about a client-side scripting. So generally I need your ideas, about the following questions: - Is Joomla and generally CMS a good option for a music website? - How famous artists' website is base on? CMS or Client-side scripting? - Do you recommend to create it manually without using and CMS or template? - An do you suggest WordPress for this type of websites? (The website will have these pages: Biography, News, Music (with a music player), Photos, videos and contacts). That's it! • Hack a Linksys Router into a Ambient Data Monitor

  If you have a data source (like a weather report, bus schedule, or other changing data set) you can pull it and display it with an ambient data monitor; this fun build combines a hacked Linksys router and a modified toy bus to display transit arrival times. John Graham-Cumming wanted to keep an eye on the current bus arrival time tables without constantly visiting the web site to check them. His workaround turns a hacked Linksys router, a display, a modified London city bus (you could hack apart a more project-specific enclosure, of course), and a simple bit code that polls the bus schedule’s API, into a cool ambient data monitor that displays the arrival time, in minutes, of the next two buses that will pass by his stop. • What partition to use to keep data files in Ubuntu?

  I have been using Ubuntu for a few years and usually my partition set up was the following: Ext3 or Ext4 partition for the system itself (20 GB); A 10 GB swap partition; a big FAT32 partition to store movies, photos, work stuff, etc. (depends on the capacity of the disk, but usually it is what is left from Ext3+Swap, currently it is more than 200 GB). Does this setup sound right? I am considering to switching to one big Ext3 partition now, because the problem with Fat32 in Ubuntu has not gone anywhere: for example, right now I can access my 'big' partition with a 'Data' label only through /media/_themes?END. Pretty strange name for a partition, isn't it? some Linux software fail to read/write on this partition. For example, if I want to play around with rebar and build/make/compile things on this FAT32 partition, it will always complain about permissions and won't work (the same goes for many other kinds of software); it is not stable, I can not refer to some files on this FAT32 partition, because after the next reboot it will be called not '_themes?END', but something else. On the other side I usually begin to run out of space on the Ext3 partition after a few months of usage. So, the question is - what is the best setup of partitions for an Ubuntu system? Should a FAT32 partition be used at all?

• "Opportunity" to take over maintenance of a small internal website. What should I do?

  I have been offered an "opportunity" to take over maintenance of a small internal website run by my group that provides information about schedules and photos of events the groups done. My manager sent me the link to the site and checked it out. The site looked clean and neat but loaded in ~5 seconds. I thought this was a little long considering the site really didn't contain a lot of content. This prompted me to take a look under the hood at the pages source code. To my horror it'd been totally hacked together using nested tables! I'm new so I really can't say no to this "opportunity" so what should I do with it? Every fiber of my being feels that the only correct thing to do is over hall the site using CSS, Div's, Span's and any other appropriate tags that a sane/good web developer would used to begin with instead of depending on the render incentive magic of tables. But I'd like to ask programmers with more experienced then me, who have been in this situation. What should I do? Is my only realistic option to leave the horror as is and only adjusting the content as requested? I'm really torn between good development and the corporate reality I'm part of. Is there some kind of middle ground where things can be made better even if they're not perfect? Thanks ahead of time.

• Samba new file ownership, permissions configuration

  I have recently installed Samba on my server. Now I have a question about permissions and how to set it up. Currently I mount the Samba shared drive to my laptop with this line in /etc/fstab: //<host>/share /mnt/melka-server-data/ cifs username=<usrname> password=<passwd> _netdev 0 0 This works, as I can read from the files and create them (as root). The problem is when I want to create files as a regular user. I always get a Permission Denied error. I didn't notice anything in Samba config that would be related to this and I don't like the idea of having to log on as root in order to copy files.. Thanks

• Encrypt SSD or not?

  My desktop machine is running Ubuntu 12.04 (and will probably stay with it until the next LTS). I've got a new 120GB SSD on the way as my existing 420GB spinning disk. If it makes any difference I'll be dual-booting with Windows 7 across both disks too. I've read some helpful answers here about /home setup and enabling TRIM, which I intend to follow. So most of my /home will be on the SSD, with only photos, videos and music on the spinning disk. The question is, when I reinstall Ubuntu from CD or USB, whether I should encrypt the SSD? Specifically: I'm reading that drive wear isn't much of an issue with modern SSDs as they last decades even if you spam them. Is this true? How big a performance reduction will encrypting cause (I have an i7 Sandybridge, so I guess it can cope)? Is it more important from a security point of view to encrypt an SSD? I think I read somewhere that it may be hard to reliably wipe data. By all means answer even if you only know about one of those things.

• Happy Tau Day! (Or: How Some Mathematicians Think We Should Retire Pi) [Video]

  When you were in school you learned all about Pi and its relationship to circles and turn-based geometry. Some mathematicians are rallying for a new lesson, on about Tau. Michael Hartl is a mathematician on a mission, a mission to get people away from using Pi and to start using Tau. His manifesto opens: Welcome to The Tau Manifesto. This manifesto is dedicated to one of the most important numbers in mathematics, perhaps the most important: the circle constant relating the circumference of a circle to its linear dimension. For millennia, the circle has been considered the most perfect of shapes, and the circle constant captures the geometry of the circle in a single number. Of course, the traditional choice of circle constant is p—but, as mathematician Bob Palais notes in his delightful article “p Is Wrong!”,1 p is wrong. It’s time to set things right. Why is Pi wrong? Among the arguments is that Tau is the ration of a circumference to the radius of a circle and defining circles by their radius is more natural and that Pi is a 2-factor number but with Tau everything is based of a single unit–three quarters of a turn around a Tau-defined circle is simply three quarters of a Tau radian. And I hope I will make it to Angela Caicedo's HOL on JavaFX. The whole program, which is available via the link above, indicates that many (dare I say "most"?) of the sessions will be using NetBeans in one way or another.
