• how to evaluate own project

  I am working on a open source project in pure C, that I have started some time ago, but only recently found time to add some features. I can clearly some weaknesses of my old design, so I am trying to refactor my old code. I have no idea however, how to evaluate properly my new code. Do you know about any techniques or tools for code evaluation? I am pretty good with object oriented design, but for about three years I had no contact with purely structural one. Therefore I don't have enough experience, to be able to discern between good and bad design choices.

• Flex SDK the right tool for this project

  A client wants a site similar to this one (but different purpose): http://www.spokeo.com/search?q=Samantha+Dawes,+&s7=t30 where the user searches by name and a map is displayed with the count over each state. When the user clicks the count the list is displayed. I am a PHP developer (and have experience with C, C++, etc). Would Flex SDK, Flash Builder 4.5 for PHP, or Flash be the best tool? The Flex SDK http://www.adobe.com/products/flex.html looks promising and it looks like I can download it free without having to purchase Flash or Flex. Is that correct? Do you think this kind of project can be done with the Flex SDK? Without purchasing Flex or Flash? Thank you for taking the time to read this.

• File added to project doesn't get added to packages

  I'm creating customized binary versions of OpenStack nova packages (lp:nova) using their packaging scripts (lp:~openstack-ubuntu-packagers/ubuntu/natty/nova/ubuntu). I create binaries by doing: dpkg-buildpackage -b -rfakeroot -tc -uc -D This creates a set of packages (python-nova, nova-common, nova-compute, ...). In our customized version of the code (lp:~usc-isi/nova/hpc-trunk), we recently merged in some changes from another branch, and there's now a new file in our repository that wasn't in upstream: nova/virt/cpuinfo.xml.template. This file isn't getting added to any of the packages, where it should be added to python-nova. Why wouldn't dpkg-buildpackage be including this file? A more basic question: how does dpkg-buildpackage determine which files go in which packages? Is it related at all to the debian/watch file? • Package upgrade on Ubuntu raid server and grub setup issue

During the upgrade, grub installation screen appeared and asked me which partition I wanted to install grub. Options are sda,sdb,md1 and md2. I decide to install them on both sda and sdb partitions. I wondering, was I make true decision? If machine get reboot is it can be boot up safely? But during code reviews if instead of functionality of the code the only complain one hears is about formatting/spacing and similar trivial things, when there are far better things to discuss (Among other things I have noticed the sometimes during the so called "reviews" suggestions are made that implementation needs a re-write just because it doesnt use the most happening technology/buzzword) How do fellow programmers deal with such scenarios? or is this just a one off? • Who should determine team size?

  Developers, managers, or customers? I was recently involved in a situation where I felt like the customers were arbitrarily demanding for more developers on a team which already had too many developers. They were scared the project was going to be late (and it probably will be). Personally, I was scared we were going to fulfill Brook's Law. The group of programmers already lacked in-depth business knowledge, and some were even new to the technology (.NET), yet the customer wanted to add more developers who had even less business knowledge. The impression was that this would make the project get done quicker. I started wondering if the customer, who is extremely bright, but presumably knows little about IT project management, should really be the one determining team size.

• using svn and mercurial in eclipse for same project

  Is it possible to have in eclipse 2 "team providers" for same project. E.g. svn and mercurial? So svn will be used to commit to central repository, and mercurial only to work on my PC. E.g. when I get updates from SVN, I commit to mercurial, then I work with mercurial. When everything is ready to go to central place, i commit in SVN. There is no need to integrate change history. Yes, ideally it will be just mercurial, and most probably it will happened later. But for now I want to try some dirty and fast solution if it exist :)

• A good interpreted language for a small embedded project

  I have an mbed which has a small ARM Cortex M3 on it. Basically, my effective resources for the project are ~25Kb of RAM and ~400Kb of Flash. For I/O I'll have a PS/2 keyboard, a VGA framebuffer(with character output), and an SD card for saving/loading programs(up to a couple of Mb maybe) The reason I ask this here is because I'm trying to figure out what programming language to implement on the thing. I'm looking for an interpreted language that's easy for me to implement, and won't break the bank on my resources. I also intend for this to be at least possible to write on th device itself, though the editor can be interpreted(yay bootstrapping) Anyway, I've looked at a few simple languages. Some nice candidates: Forth BASIC Scheme? Has anyone done something like this or know of any languages that can fit this bill or have comments about my three candidates so far?

  When debugging SharePoint2010 project, you need to attach w3wp.exe process, however there are often quite a few of them and it is very hard to figure out which one to attach. Today, I will show you how to find out which process to attach using a tool called process explorer. 1. Download the process explorer and run it after you download it. 2. Find the w3wp.exe processes under wininit.exe right-click the columns header and click Select Columns. 3. Include Command Line under Process Image. 4. Now you can see your IIS site name next to w3wp.exe, in my case I’d like to attach the “SharePoint – BenDev80″.You can see the PID of the process is 2920. 5. From the above process you know the process ID you’d like to attach is 2920, you can then go ahead to attach the process from Visual Studio.

I'm using portable Areas, but have difficulty creating 5 modules and about 5 functionality for each modules with fully functioning independently as a dll and database. 1- Reflection DLLs, the system works "on the fly". (I cant do it on mvc4 at moment). 2- Portables Areas (I need to do one area for each modules*functionality 5*5 Areas). Confuse way and I'm afraid if this is ridiculous. 3- Implement WFC on MVC4, compatible? 4- Other better way?

  First off, sorry if this is the wrong 'stack' site, but it seemed like a good place to start. I'm happy to report that my services as a web developer are starting to be in quite a lot of demand, and I have a few existing and potentially new customers all lining up - but I'm finding it very hard to keep track of everything. What I'm hoping for is some (preferably web-based) system which I can use to keep track of who my customers are, the various projects that I've got going on for them, and (if possible) the individual sub-tasks that make up each project. What would be even better is if the relevant customer was able to log into the site, and see the process of their projects. I do hope you know what I'm talking about, and that you'll be able to offer some suggestions of either web-base sites that offer something along these lines, or of some open source solution or something like that? • Help comparing Cocos2d and Unity3d for this project.....

  I will not go into details, but I would like to hear your opinions about this: Essentially, my project will be a 2d game, with lots of complex levels, where some might be simple and others might be a bit more deep, with physics, etc. We want to implement our very own online structure: logging in, leaderboards, achievements, friends etc with our own servers. This means no OpenFeint nor GameCenter at all. We expect this game to be very large in both graphics and audio. We wish to use in-app purchases. Now, we considered two options. Cocos2d and Unity3d. We need help deciding using the factors I mentioned before (networking, good performance even for a large game in terms of graphics and audio like this, in-app purchases, etc) which option would fit better this? Technically, both options can create 2d games. I'd like to hear your opinion.

  I have a web app thats been in active development for about 8 months now and its becoming apparent that the project has a need to maintain a separation between app specific code and our OO Javascript API. What I would like to do is have another repository with the following general structure of the js API code. repo_name | +---build | +---build_tools | +---doc | +---src | +---js Of course this structure is different from the original web app directory structure. If I make changes to this new repository how could I pull in those changes to the web app repository without unintentionally removing files or modifying the directory structure of the web app repository?
