    The 'Auto Shutdown computer after all downloads finish' extension that I used for Firefox 3.6 - Auto Shutdown 3.6.2D by InBasic , does not work with Firefox 4 or higher, even if I tweaked it to force its compatibility with versions of Firefox higher than 3.6. Can anyone recommend another extension, software, or solution that can automatically shutdown the computer after all downloads have finished in Firefox 4 or later versions? The OS I'm using is Windows 7.

    I'm looking to build a new computer from the ground up. I'm not sure what to look out for and need guidance and help on how to pick the hardware needed to construct my new rig. How do I know what to buy? How do I find out if a given CPU will be enough for a certain game or application that I want to run? How do I find out if a given graphics card will be enough for a certain game or application? What is important when looking at motherboards? How much memory do I need? How do I know how much wattage I need for a power supply? What size case do I need? What relevant standards do I need to read up on and be aware of? PCI, PCIe, SATA, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, etc... What "gotchas" do I need to be on the lookout for? Please keep responses generation-agnostic to ensure they will be helpful to our future users. While Stack Exchange does not permit shopping recommendations, it doesn't provide any general advice to consider when buying hardware. So, instead of just telling those that ask what to buy that it's not allowed, let's tell them how to figure out what they need.   • Laptop Suggestions and Alternatives [closed]

    Hi, I need some suggestions and alternatives in buying laptops. Me and my Girlfriend are planning to buy laptops. Her budget is $600 and mine is $850. We both love apple products, because of it's elegant design and yet powerful. But we can't yet afford mac laptops.. so we are looking for alternatives. One we see is The Stylish Sony E-Series (white version) see it here. To give you an Idea, Software she frequently use are Photoshop, MS Office and firefox. Mine is Adobe CS4, Cinema4d, MS Office and firefox. We are looking for light, slick and clean interface of a laptop (very close to mac notebooks). Thanks!

Lended from the free post: I would expect such an application to have these features: choose the whole desktop, a region, a window to record zoom in an area, and camera move save the recorded movie to a compressed format have basic editing tools have the mouse highlighting feature highlight window/field on the screen, any trick will do display pressed keys/key combinations (like iphone does) So the question is: Which desktop recording/screencasting software would you recommend?

    I'm using Windows 7 and would like to have a feature like Little Snitch on the Mac that alerts you whenever a program on your computer makes an outgoing connection. Description of Little Snitch from its website: Little Snitch informs you whenever a program attempts to establish an outgoing Internet connection. You can then choose to allow or deny this connection, or define a rule how to handle similar, future connection attempts. This reliably prevents private data from being sent out without your knowledge. Little Snitch runs inconspicuously in the background and it can also detect network related activity of viruses, trojans and other malware. Little Snitch provides flexible configuration options, allowing you to grant specific permissions to your trusted applications or to prevent others from establishing particular Internet connections at all.   • External USB HD with -optional- mains?

    Hi, I'm Christmas-present-buying, and I'd appreciate recommendations for a USB HD with an optional mains power input. I've hunted, but can't find all the information I want (partially due to sketchy product specifications). Background: This is for a digital TV which I do not own, and so I'd like to get it correct first time. The TV has a USB port to allow recording straight to disk, but the manuals don't say how much power can be drawn through the USB port. The manual's instructions state, possibly generically, to plug the drive in before connecting to the TV. Ideally I'd like a small (2.5"?) drive which can draw power over USB, with an mains power input if it turns out the USB port on the TV doesn't offer enough juice. The ideal is to use one cable, two max. A powered USB hub would introduce too much clutter. I've spotted that the LaCie Petit drives have what appears to be an additional power input, but I'm not even sure from the specs what that is. And the device doesn't ship with a mains adapter. Suggestions?

    I need a software for managing gamenet (Gamenet is like a cybercafe except people play games in gamenet instead of surfing the web!) The software should have this basic features: Accounting features (defining users, assigning a usage time to them, etc) Denying access to regular windows features (windows explorer, creating/editing/deleting files) Showing a list of available games to users to run. Creating login report I've tested a software named GamePort but it has some bugs and shortcomings.

  • Live Camera capturing and printing software

    I'm running a Haunted House exhibit at my school to raise money, and I had the idea of taking pictures of the "victims"/students remotely with my Sony DSLR camera and then printing and selling the photos as the students exit the haunted House (much like amusement parks do with roller coasters as you go down the final drop, or when one takes pictures with Santa Claus at the mall). Does anyone know of any free/relatively inexpensive software that would allow me to do this? I would prefer Mac-compatibility, but it's not a requirement.

  • How to pipe internet radio into a tuner?

    UPDATE: Thanks everyone for the ideas! This was an area I knew very little about but now I can talk with a little more expertise about it. Much appreciated! Visited my dad this weekend and he wants to pipe some internet radio he's found down to a tuner on quite a distance away in the house. He uses computers for only very basic things: e-mail, getting the Post crossword, checking Yahoo!, checking recipes, etc. There's currently one computer in the house (no router). My initial suggestion (without any research whatsoever) was to get a wireless router and a netbook for downstairs near the tuner, but he initially wasn't too keen about having another computer down there. Anyway, is there any computer hardware that could magically pipe the audio output from the computer down to one set of (RCA) audio inputs on the tuner? Wireless isn't necessary but it probably would be easier. Anyway, thanks for your suggestions! UPDATE Thanks everyone! Voted up all of your suggestions now that I have 15 rep. Much appreciated.

    I'm looking for a good keyboard tray that would attach to my desk drawer (one of the old metal SteelCase desks). Criteria: Stable and solid (we had one that wiggled and it drove me crazy). Allows the drawer to move in and out. Easy installation would be nice. Inexpensive (<$100) would be nice, but I'll consider expensive ones if they meet all of the above.

    I use Adobe Fireworks for its Texture and Pattern tools to make things like this: http://i.imgur.com/sci7Roc.png and then i copy-paste it to Flash Professional (Adobe) to use there. but fireworks is so slow and buggy is there a free or commercial software to do this simple Texture / Pattern thing easily? Texture (like the second image above) Patter and Texture (like the first one) Transparent Texture, so the background color would be visible instead of the white lines in second image The ability to copy and paste it (as PNG 32 or any alpha transparent image) so i don't have to save it first and then import it to flash * I Use Mac OS X 10.8.4 *
