  • Is there a single book that covers the breadth of computer science fundamentals? [closed]

    - by superFoo
When I did my undergraduate studies in elecrical engineering, there was this book called "Basic Electricity" by Van Valkenburgh. If you read that book cover to cover, your fundamentals in electrical engineering would be bulletproof. I would recommend it all my juniors and I absolutely loved it. Is there such a book in the field of computer science? I am not so concerned about the algorithms. I am looking more into something that tells me how does everything work beneath the covers. TCPIP, memory management, DNS, routing, SSL, buffer, queuing etc.

  • What programming Langauge Would you learn to Reengineer USB Devices? [closed]

    - by user70113
Currently Work in IT support and am retraining in electrical engineering / electronics, I am also interested in Reverse Engineering which language would be best for Hardware RE, I have seen a few sources say C, C++ and Python? I am not familiar with Linux, but installed ubuntu to learn with. I am not a programmer far from it, but I can understand enough basic VB,Java and PHP to edit it for simple things. One of my immediate projects would be to learn to reverse engineer USB devices and write my own low level drivers, I know there are porting kits, but I really want to know it from the ground up. Thanks for any advise folks Most Appreciated.

  • Configuring hibernate.reveng.xml to detect a sequence PK generator with hibernate3-maven-plugin and

    - by mmm
    Hi, is there a way to configure hibernate3-maven-plugin so that a sequence generator is detected for a primary-key? I'm using a bottom-up approach for hibernate configuration (which means letting hibernate-tools generate the hibernate configuration using a jdbc-connection for you via reverse-engineering on an existing database schema). I've read this, but also this already (those two can be unrelated, but can also leave a hint). My hibernate.reveng.xml is the following: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE hibernate-reverse-engineering SYSTEM "http://hibernate.sourceforge.net/hibernate-reverse-engineering-3.0.dtd" > <hibernate-reverse-engineering> <table name="ORDERS"> <primary-key> <!-- setting up a specific id generator for a table --> <generator class="sequence"> <param name="sequence">ORDERS_ORDER_ID_seq</param> </generator> <key-column name="ORDER_ID"/> </primary-key> </table> </hibernate-reverse-engineering> And I'm expecting it to generate an Orders.hbm.xml file like this: <?xml version="1.0"?> <!DOCTYPE hibernate-mapping PUBLIC "-//Hibernate/Hibernate Mapping DTD 3.0//EN" "http://hibernate.sourceforge.net/hibernate-mapping-3.0.dtd"> <!-- Generated 2010-06-06 18:55:42 by Hibernate Tools 3.2.2.GA --> <hibernate-mapping> <class name="some.package.Orders" table="orders" schema="public"> <id name="orderId" type="long"> <column name="order_id" /> <generator class="sequence"> <param name="sequence">ORDERS_ORDER_ID_seq</param> </generator> </id> ... </class> </hibernate-mapping> ...but receiving this instead: <?xml version="1.0"?> <!DOCTYPE hibernate-mapping PUBLIC "-//Hibernate/Hibernate Mapping DTD 3.0//EN" "http://hibernate.sourceforge.net/hibernate-mapping-3.0.dtd"> <!-- Generated 2010-06-06 18:55:42 by Hibernate Tools 3.2.2.GA --> <hibernate-mapping> <class name="some.package.Orders" table="orders" schema="public"> <id name="orderId" type="long"> <column name="order_id" /> <generator class="assigned" /> </id> ... </class> </hibernate-mapping> I know my hibernate.reveng.xml is being read by hibernate3-maven-plugin, as I experience maven errors whenever syntax errors appear in the file, so pom.xml seems to be correct and hibernate.reveng.xml syntactically correct. Any clues?

  • Fixed div once page is scrolled is flickering

    - by jasondavis
I am trying to have an advertisement block/div that will be hald way down the page, once you scroll do the page to this point it will stick to the top. Here is a demo of what I am trying to do and the code I am using to do it with... http://jsfiddle.net/jasondavis/6vpA7/3/embedded/result/ In the demo it works perfectly how I am wanting it to be, however when I implement it on my live site, http://goo.gl/zuaZx it works but when you scroll down the div flickers in and out of view on each scroll or down key press. On my site to see the problem live it is the blokc on the right sidebar that says "Recommended Books" Here is the code I am using... $(document).ready( function() { $(window).scroll( function() { if ($(window).scrollTop() > $('#social-container').offset().top) $('#social').addClass('floating'); else $('#social').removeClass('floating'); } ); } );? css #social.floating { position: fixed; top: 0; }? My demo jsfiddle where it works correctly http://jsfiddle.net/jasondavis/6vpA7/3/ The only thing different on my live site is the div/id name is different. As you can see it is somewhat working on my live site except the flickering in and out of view as you scroll down the page. Anyone have any ideas why this would happen on my live site and not on my jsfiddle demo?

  • Xobni Free Powers Up Outlook’s Search and Contacts

    - by Matthew Guay
Want to find out more about your contacts, discover email trends, and even sync Yahoo! email accounts in Outlook?  Here’s how you can do this and more with Xobni Free. Email is one of the most important communications mediums today, but even with all of the advances in Outlook over the years it can still be difficult to keep track of conversations, files, and contacts.  Xobni makes it easy by indexing your emails and organizing them by sender.  You can use its powerful search to quickly find any email, find related messages, and then view more information about that contact with information from social networks.  And, to top it off, it even lets you view your Yahoo! emails directly in Outlook without upgrading to a Yahoo! Plus account.  Xobni runs in Outlook 2003, 2007, and 2010, including the 64 bit version of Outlook 2010, and users of older versions will especially enjoy the new features Xobni brings for free. Getting started Download the Xobni Free installer (link below), and run to start the installation.  Make sure to exit Outlook before installing.  Xobni may need to download additional files which may take a few moments. When the download is finished, proceed with the install as normal.  You can opt out of the Product Improvement Program at the end of the installation by unchecking the box.  Additionally, you are asked to share Xobni with your friends on social networks, but this is not required.   Next time you open Outlook, you’ll notice the new Xobni sidebar in Outlook.  You can choose to watch an introduction video that will help you quickly get up to speed on how Xobni works. While this is playing, Xobni is working at indexing your email in the background.  Once the first indexing is finished, click Let’s Go! to start using Xobni. Here’s how Xobni looks in Outlook 2010: Advanced Email Information Select an email, and now you can see lots of info about it in your new Xobni sidebar.   On the top of the sidebar, select the graph icon to see when and how often you email with a contact.  Each contact is given an Xobni rank so you can quickly see who you email the most.   You can see all related emails sorted into conversations, and also all attachments in the conversation, not just this email. Xobni can also show you all scheduled appointments and links exchanged with a contact, but this is only available in the Plus version.  If you’d rather not see the tab for a feature you can’t use, click Don’t show this tab to banish it from Xobni for good.   Searching emails from the Xobni toolbar is very fast, and you can preview a message by simply hovering over it from the search pane. Get More Information About Your Contacts Xobni’s coolest feature is its social integration.  Whenever you select an email, you may see a brief bio, picture, and more, all pulled from social networks.   Select one of the tabs to find more information.  You may need to login to view information on your contacts from certain networks. The Twitter tab lets you see recent tweets.  Xobni will search for related Twitter accounts, and will ask you to confirm if the choice is correct.   Now you can see this contact’s recent Tweets directly from Outlook.   The Hoovers tab can give you interesting information about the businesses you’re in contact with. If the information isn’t correct, you can edit it and add your own information.  Click the Edit button, and the add any information you want.   You can also remove a network you don’t wish to see.  Right-click on the network tabs, select Manage Extensions, and uncheck any you don’t want to see. But sometimes online contact just doesn’t cut it.  For these times, click on the orange folder button to request a contact’s phone number or schedule a time with them. This will open a new email message ready to send with the information you want.  Edit as you please, and send. Add Yahoo! Email to Outlook for Free One of Xobni’s neatest features is that it let’s you add your Yahoo! email account to Outlook for free.  Click the gear icon in the bottom of the Xobni sidebar and select Options to set it up. Select the Integration tab, and click Enable to add Yahoo! mail to Xobni. Sign in with your Yahoo! account, and make sure to check the Keep me signed in box. Note that you may have to re-signin every two weeks to keep your Yahoo! account connected.  Select I agree to finish setting it up. Xobni will now download and index your recent Yahoo! mail. Your Yahoo! messages will only show up in the Xobni sidebar.  Whenever you select a contact, you will see related messages from your Yahoo! account as well.  Or, you can search from the sidebar to find individual messages from your Yahoo! account.  Note the Y! logo beside Yahoo! messages.   Select a message to read it in the Sidebar.  You can open the email in Yahoo! in your browser, or can reply to it using your default Outlook email account. If you have many older messages in your Yahoo! account, make sure to go back to the Integration tab and select Index Yahoo! Mail to index all of your emails. Conclusion Xobni is a great tool to help you get more out of your daily Outlook experience.  Whether you struggle to find attachments a coworker sent you or want to access Yahoo! email from Outlook, Xobni might be the perfect tool for you.  And with the extra things you learn about your contacts with the social network integration, you might boost your own PR skills without even trying! • Which web services should be integrated?

    - by Adam Matan
Mail + Social networking? One identity for all sites? Integration between all social networks and IM services? Which web services should be integrated in the future, and why? Edit: Clarification: By "integrating", I mean that two or more services should be seamlessly connected, and that connection would benefit the user. Foe example, I would really like to have an IM application that would support many accounts on many IM providers (And IMHO, Pidgin's not ready yet).

  • Suggest the best options to me to design the dynamic web interface using PHP MYSQL and AJAX

    - by Krishna
Hello, I am designing a web interface for a company. I am describing the company's profile: company is currently having 5 branches and planning to extend their branches all over the country. it is an insurance surveying company. they are dealing with 6 Categories in the insurance domain, vide .. Engineering Fire Marine Motor Miscellaneous Risk Inspection and branches named as b1, b2, b3, b4, b5 and Extending. and finally they have contract with 22 companies. For each claim they are assign a unique ID. like contractcompany/category/serialno Ex: take a contracted company names as xxx, sss, zzz. xxx/Engineering/001 sss/Engineering/001 . . . xxx/Enginnering/002 sss/Engineering/002 . . . xxx/Fire/001 sss/Fire/001 . . . xxx/Fire/002 . . . xxx/Fire/002 . . . and so on..... by this way they issue the unique ID for each claim. Finally what i want is developing the interface with PHP mysql and ajax auto generating the unique id for each claim. store full details of the claims with reference to unique id. show all claims in one page, and they can view by branch wise and category wise. send monthly Report (All claims they have given and status of claims) to contract companies. give access to contracted companies, but they can view only their respective claims. Each claim has its own documents. So they can be uploaded by own company users or administrator. these files are associated with unique ID. contracted companies can view files. Give access to branches to enter new claims and update old claims. Administrator can create, update and delete all the claims and their details. Only administrator can grant new users (own company branches / contracted companies) Finally the the panel is completely database driven. Could any body can help. Thanks in advance Kindly do the needful and oblige Thanks and Regards Krishna. P [email protected]

  • Having problem with C++ file handling

    - by caramel1991
Our lecturer has given us a task,I've attempted it and try every single effort I can,but I still struggle with one of the problem in it,here goes the question: The company you work at receives a monthly report in a text format. The report contains the following information. • Department Name • Head of Department Name • Month • Minimum spending of the month • Maximum spending of the month Your program is to obtain the name of the input file from the user. Implement a structure to represent the data: Once the file has been read into your program, print out the following statistics for the user: • List which department has the minimum spending per month by month • List which department has the minimum spending by month by month Write the information into a file called “MaxMin.txt” Then do a processing so that the Department Name, Head of Department Name, Minimum spending and Maximum spending are written to separate files based on the month, eg Jan, Feb, March and so on. and of course our lecturer does send us a text file with the content: Engineering Bill Jan 2000 15000 IT Jack Jan 300 20000 HR Jill Jan 1500 10000 Engineering Bill Feb 5000 45000 IT Jack Feb 4500 7000 HR Jill Feb 5600 60000 Engineering Bill Mar 5000 45000 IT Jack Mar 4500 7000 HR Jill Mar 5600 60000 Engineering Bill Apr 5000 45000 IT Jack Apr 4500 7000 HR Jill Apr 5600 60000 Engineering Bill May 2000 15000 IT Jack May 300 20000 HR Jill May 1500 10000 Engineering Bill Jun 2000 15000 IT Jack Jun 300 20000 HR Jill Jun 1500 10000 and here's the c++ code I've written ue#include include include using namespace std; struct Record { string depName; string head; string month; float max; float min; string name; }myRecord[19]; int main () { string line; ofstream minmax, jan, feb, mar, apr, may, jun; char a[50]; char b[50]; int i = 0,j,k; float temp; //float maxjan=myRecord[0].max,maxfeb=myRecord[0].max,maxmar=myRecord[0].max,maxapr=myRecord[0].max,maxmay=myRecord[0].max,maxjune=myRecord[0].max; float minjan=myRecord[1].min,minfeb=myRecord[1].min,minmar=myRecord[1].min,minapr=myRecord[1].min,minmay=myRecord[1].min,minjune=myRecord[1].min; float maxjan=0,maxfeb=0,maxmar=0,maxapr=0,maxmay=0,maxjune=0; //float minjan=0,minfeb=0,minmar=0,minapr=0,minmay=0,minjune=0; string maxjanDep,maxfebDep,maxmarDep,maxaprDep,maxmayDep,maxjunDep; string minjanDep,minfebDep,minmarDep,minaprDep,minmayDep,minjunDep; cout<<"Enter file name: "; cina; ifstream myfile (a); //minmax.open ("MaxMin.txt"); if (myfile.is_open()){ while (! myfile.eof()){ myfilemyRecord[i].depNamemyRecord[i].headmyRecord[i].monthmyRecord[i].minmyRecord[i].max; cout << myRecord[i].depName<<"\t"< cout<<"Enter file name: "; cinb; ifstream myfile1 (b); minmax.open ("MaxMin.txt"); jan.open ("Jan.txt"); feb.open ("Feb.txt"); mar.open ("March.txt"); apr.open ("April.txt"); may.open ("May.txt"); jun.open ("Jun.txt"); if (myfile1.is_open()){ while (! myfile1.eof()){ myfile1myRecord[i].depNamemyRecord[i].headmyRecord[i].monthmyRecord[i].minmyRecord[i].max; if (myRecord[i].month == "Jan"){ jan<< myRecord[i].depName<<"\t"< if (maxjan< myRecord[i].max){ maxjan=myRecord[i].max; maxjanDep=myRecord[i].depName;} //if (minjan myRecord[i].min){ // minjan=myRecord[i].min; //minjanDep=myRecord[i].depName; //} for (k=1;k<=3;k++){ for (j=0;j<2;j++){ if (myRecord[j].minmyRecord[j+1].min){ temp=myRecord[j].min; myRecord[j].min=myRecord[j+1].min; myRecord[j+1].min=temp; minjanDep=myRecord[j].depName; }}} } if (myRecord[i].month == "Feb"){ feb<< myRecord[i].depName<<"\t"< //if (minfebmyRecord[i].min){ //minfeb=myRecord[i].min; //minfebDep=myRecord[i].depName; //} for (k=1;k<=3;k++){ for (j=0;j<2;j++){ if (myRecord[j].minmyRecord[j+1].min){ temp=myRecord[j].min; myRecord[j].min=myRecord[j+1].min; myRecord[j+1].min=temp; minfebDep=myRecord[j+1].depName; }}} } if (myRecord[i].month == "Mar"){ mar<< myRecord[i].depName<<"\t"< if (myRecord[i].month == "Apr"){ apr<< myRecord[i].depName<<"\t"< if (minaprmyRecord[i].min){ minapr=myRecord[i].min; minaprDep=myRecord[i].min;} } if (myRecord[i].month == "May"){ may< if (minmaymyRecord[i].min){ minmay=myRecord[i].min; minmayDep=myRecord[i].depName;} } if (myRecord[i].month == "Jun"){ jun<< myRecord[i].depName<<"\t"< if (minjunemyRecord[i].min){ minjune=myRecord[i].min; minjunDep=myRecord[i].depName;} } i++; myfile.close(); } minmax<<"department that has maximum spending at jan "< else{ cout << "Unable to open file"< } sorry inside that code ue#include should has iostream along with another two #include fstream and string, but at here it was treated as html tag,so i can't type it. my problem here is,I can't seems to get the minimum spending,I've try all I can but I'm still lingering on it,any idea??THANK YOU!

  • Wordpress Template HTML CSS Layout Confusion

    - by Jess McKenzie
I am having huge confusion with a template that I have purchased and I am trying to modify to handle a widget contact form. I am getting close with this but I have now muddled up the CSS or I have a feeling every page has a different CSS structure. • view handler design pattern

    - by Mark Roberts
I'm trying to figure out the origin of the view handler design pattern in software engineering. Many of the design patterns in software engineering were inspired by things which pre-date computers, and I was wondering if anybody had any insights on the origin of this particular pattern.

  • Duplicated Label in add_menu_page

    - by Blackdream
I have created a function for a theme customization. function create_theme_option() { add_menu_page( 'Manage Options', //Page Title 'Theme Option', //WP Administrator Menu Title 'manage_options', // 'theme-options', //Link to a page to your Administration Area 'deploy_theme_options', //Function Name get_template_directory_uri() . '/Plugins/Background Changer/images/icons/icon.png',//Menu Icon 99); add_submenu_page("theme-options", "Theme Settings", "Theme Settings", 1, "theme-settings", "theme_settings"); add_submenu_page("theme-options", "Manage Header", "Manage Header", 1, "manage-header", "manage_header"); add_submenu_page("theme-options", "Social Media", "Social Media Links", 1, "social-media", "social_media"); add_submenu_page("theme-options", "Catalog Manager", "Catalog Manager", 1, "catalog-manager", "catalog_manager"); } but I noticed that after the label "Theme Option" there is another text appear next to it as "Theme Option". • OpenSocial and its usages

    - by Paul Knopf
I have looked for some explanation on the exact usages for the set of standards known as OpenSocial. I need some clarification if I can use OpenSocial like the following. I would like to create one library used to community with an OpenSocial api for use in my website that will not 'behave' like an application described by common sites like facebook and myspace. I'm not making a myspace of facebook application, I'm creating my own website and I want users to be able to find friends. I would like to allow users to store usernames and passwords for various OpenSocial-supported social networks. I would also like to use the api to sync events from my web site to their specified social network. I would also like to allow my users to view a list of friends and invite them. Is it possible to create one library that supports OpenSocial and simple "point" to and social network that supports it to get a list of friends and etc?

  • Is JSF really ready to deliver high performance web applications?

    - by aklin81
I have heard a lot of good about JSF but as far as I know people also had lots of serious complains with this technology in the past, not aware of how much the situation has improved. We are considering JSF as a probable technology for a social network project. But we are not aware of the performance scores of JSF neither we could really come across any existing high performance website that had been using JSF. People complain about its performance scalability issues. We are still not very sure if we are doing the right thing by choosing jsf, and thus would like to hear from you all about this and take your inputs into consideration. Is it possible to configure JSF to satisfy the high performance needs of social networking service ? Also till what extent is it possible to survive with the current problems in JSF.

  • Big Data – What is Big Data – 3 Vs of Big Data – Volume, Velocity and Variety – Day 2 of 21

    - by Pinal Dave
Data is forever. Think about it – it is indeed true. Are you using any application as it is which was built 10 years ago? Are you using any piece of hardware which was built 10 years ago? The answer is most certainly No. However, if I ask you – are you using any data which were captured 50 years ago, the answer is most certainly Yes. For example, look at the history of our nation. I am from India and we have documented history which goes back as over 1000s of year. Well, just look at our birthday data – atleast we are using it till today. Data never gets old and it is going to stay there forever.  Application which interprets and analysis data got changed but the data remained in its purest format in most cases. As organizations have grown the data associated with them also grew exponentially and today there are lots of complexity to their data. Most of the big organizations have data in multiple applications and in different formats. The data is also spread out so much that it is hard to categorize with a single algorithm or logic. The mobile revolution which we are experimenting right now has completely changed how we capture the data and build intelligent systems.  Big organizations are indeed facing challenges to keep all the data on a platform which give them a  single consistent view of their data. This unique challenge to make sense of all the data coming in from different sources and deriving the useful actionable information out of is the revolution Big Data world is facing. Defining Big Data The 3Vs that define Big Data are Variety, Velocity and Volume. Volume We currently see the exponential growth in the data storage as the data is now more than text data. We can find data in the format of videos, musics and large images on our social media channels. It is very common to have Terabytes and Petabytes of the storage system for enterprises. As the database grows the applications and architecture built to support the data needs to be reevaluated quite often. Sometimes the same data is re-evaluated with multiple angles and even though the original data is the same the new found intelligence creates explosion of the data. The big volume indeed represents Big Data. Velocity The data growth and social media explosion have changed how we look at the data. There was a time when we used to believe that data of yesterday is recent. The matter of the fact newspapers is still following that logic. However, news channels and radios have changed how fast we receive the news. Today, people reply on social media to update them with the latest happening. On social media sometimes a few seconds old messages (a tweet, status updates etc.) is not something interests users. They often discard old messages and pay attention to recent updates. The data movement is now almost real time and the update window has reduced to fractions of the seconds. This high velocity data represent Big Data. Variety Data can be stored in multiple format. For example database, excel, csv, access or for the matter of the fact, it can be stored in a simple text file. Sometimes the data is not even in the traditional format as we assume, it may be in the form of video, SMS, pdf or something we might have not thought about it. It is the need of the organization to arrange it and make it meaningful. It will be easy to do so if we have data in the same format, however it is not the case most of the time. The real world have data in many different formats and that is the challenge we need to overcome with the Big Data. This variety of the data represent  represent Big Data. Big Data in Simple Words Big Data is not just about lots of data, it is actually a concept providing an opportunity to find new insight into your existing data as well guidelines to capture and analysis your future data. It makes any business more agile and robust so it can adapt and overcome business challenges. Tomorrow In tomorrow’s blog post we will try to answer discuss Evolution of Big Data.
