  • Sending files using Winsock - optimal send() data length?

    I am using Winsock with non-blocking sockets to send a file to a client. The way I'm doing it right now is that I read a chunk of 8192 bytes from the file, and then loop until all of it successfully goes through send() (obviously handling WSAEWOULDBLOCK as it occurs). I then move on and read the next 8192 bytes, and so on... Although I can use any other number than 8192 when I test the transfer on my local machine, once I try it over a network, it seems like 8191 is the largest number I can use. When I try to use any number higher than 8191 (starting with 8192), the file transfer becomes extremely slow (about 5 times slower). Is there any reason why 8191 is so special? I've done some more testing and it turns out that using 8000 is slightly faster (by 0.5%). If you understand why 8191 is so special, can you tell me if there is a number better than the others (better than 8000)? I have a feeling that it has something to do with the fact that the default send buffer allocated to the socket by Winsock is 8KB, but I don't understand why. It might also have something to do with the Nagle algorithm, but again, I'm not sure how. Note that I have not modified the SO_SNDBUF option nor the TCP_NODELAY option. Or am I doing this all wrong? What's the best way of sending a file over a non-blocking socket?

  • Updating section in ConfigParser (or an alternative)

    I am making a plugin for another program and so I am trying to make thing as lightweight as possible. What i need to do is be able to update the name of a section in the ConfigParser's config file. [project name] author:john doe email: [email protected] year: 2010 I then have text fields where user can edit project's name, author, email and year. I don't think changing [project name] is possible, so I have thought of two solutions: 1 -Have my config file like this: [0] projectname: foobar author:john doe email: [email protected] year: 2010 that way i can change project's name just like another option. But the problem is, i would need the section # to be auto incremented. And to do this i would have to get every section, sort of, and figure out what the next number should be. The other option would be to delete the entire section and its value, and re-add it with the updated values which would require a little more work as well, such as passing a variable that holds the old section name through functions, etc, but i wouldn't mind if it's faster. Which of the two is best? or is there another way? I am willing to go with the fastest/lightweight solution possible, doesn't matter if it requires more work or not.

    1. What exactly is the security risk with popups? The new browsers provide settings to block window popups (on blocking, sites with active popups display a message to user). What exactly is the security risk with popups? If allowing popups can execute something dangerous, then the main window can too. Is it not the case. I think I don't know about some special powers of window popups. 2. Any special features of popup windows? Take for example the HDFC bank netbanking site. The entire netbanking session happens in a new window popup and a user neither manually edit the URL or paste the URL in the main browser window. it does not work. Is a popup window needed for this feature? Does it improve security? (Asking because everything that is there in this site revolves around security - so they must have done that for a reason too). Why otherwise they would implement the entire netbanking on a popup window? 3. Is it possible to override browser's popup blocking settings Lastly, the HDFC site succcessfully displays popup window even when in the browser settings popups are blocked. So, how do they do it? Is that a browser hack? To see this - go to http://hdfcbank.com/ Under the "Login to your account" section select "HDFC Bank NetBanking" and click the "Login" button. You can verify that even if popups are blocked/popup blocker is enabled in the browser settings, this site is able to display popups. The answers to this question say that it is not possible to display popup windows if it has been blocked in browser settings. Solved Concluded with Pointy's solution and comments under that.     I got a strange problem, I never actually expirienced this before, here is the code of the server (client is firefox in this case), the way I create it: _Socket = new Socket( AddressFamily.InterNetwork, SocketType.Stream, ProtocolType.Tcp ); _Socket.Bind( new IPEndPoint( Settings.IP, Settings.Port ) ); _Socket.Listen( 1000 ); _Socket.Blocking = false; the way i accept connection: while( _IsWorking ) { if( listener.Socket.Poll( -1, SelectMode.SelectRead ) ) { Socket clientSocket = listener.Socket.Accept(); clientSocket.Blocking = false; clientSocket.SetSocketOption( SocketOptionLevel.Tcp, SocketOptionName.NoDelay, true ); } } So I'm expecting it hang on listener.Socket.Poll till new connection comes, but after first one comes it hangs on poll forever. I tried to poll it constantly with smaller delay, let's say 10 microseconds, then it never goes in SelectMode.SelectRead. I guess it maybe somehow related on client's socket reuse? Maybe I don't shutdown client socket propertly and client(firefox) decides to use an old socket? I disconnect client socket this way: Context.Socket.Shutdown( SocketShutdown.Both ); // context is just a wrapper around socket Context.Socket.Close(); What may cause that problem?

  • JavaFX MouseEvent continues when I remove the object it happened on

    It took me a while to realize what was going on with mouse events going through my blocking dialog boxes when I closed them, but I finally figured out why. I still don't know any good way to fix it. I have a custom dialog box (that blocks the mouse) with a close button. When I click the close button, I remove the dialog box from the scene, but JavaFx is still processing the MouseEvent and now it finds that there is nothing blocking the screen behind where the cancel button was, so that component receives a MouseEvent. How do I make the mouseEvent stop processing when I see that they pressed cancel and remove the dialog box? Or, is there a way to make the removing of the dialog box not happen until after it is done processing the MouseEvent?   • Why is post() not updating the DOM after it returns? Wierd timing problem observed.

    Hi all, I have the following code that is really bugging me, I'm thinking perhaps the post() function needs to be blocking. I am new to jQuery(latest version) and AJAX, but I'm using ColdFusion which returns some HTML in the data variable. var dataResult; var statusResult; $.post('fh_result.cfm',$('#myform').serialize(),function(data,status){ dataResult = data; statusResult = status; }); //alert(statusResult); if ('success' == statusResult) { alert(statusResult); $('#result').html(dataResult); } When I uncomment out the first alert, it returns 'undefined' but then it goes into the if block and the next alert box it says 'success'. If I comment out that line it doesn't make it into the if statement at all. My guess is that I want to make this a blocking call or something because I want to insert the data on the page after the post. I also have a problem when I re-write the top code as follows: var dataResult; var statusResult; $.post('fh_result.cfm',$('#myform').serialize(),function(data,status){ dataResult = data; statusResult = status; alert(statusResult); $('#result').html(dataResult); }); //alert(statusResult); Now in this case, the alert says 'success' when I comment out the second alert box. When I uncomment it out, I get one alert that says success and the other that says undefined, but this time it updates the DOM with the result of the postback as desired. How can I do this without the alert box?

  • Show menu when view is long pressed

    I've been looking around on the internet regarding my question but I couldn't find a straight answer. Is it possible to create a non-blocking menu similar to the overflow menu found in Android 4.0+ when a view is long pressed? I have a number of LinearLayout instances which have an OnLongClickListener which brings up a context menu, but it's not exactly what I am looking for. I was hoping for a smoother menu which is brought up when one of these instances is clicked, and removed when the user clicks outside of the menu's region. This is very similar to the way the overflow menu behaves in the Android ActionBar. So to sum up, is it possible to replicate the look-and-fell and the behavior of the overflow menu when using context menus? Here's hoping I don't have to jump through hoops to get the implementation that I desire. Thanks in advance. EDIT: After some digging I've found the PopupMenu which is exactly what I was looking for however it works only on devices running Honeycomb and above. Does anyone know of a way with which I can replicate this menu behavior in older versions of Android without using blocking windows like dialogs?

  • Java Socket - how to catch Exception of BufferedReader.readline()

    I have a Thread (let's say T1) which reads data from socket: public void run() { while (running) { try { BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader( new InputStreamReader(socket.getInputStream()) ); String input = reader.readLine(); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } Another Thread (lets say T2) try to finish the program in one of its method. Therefore T2 does the following: T1.running = false; socket.close(); Here is this scenario for which i couldn't find a solution: T1 is active and waiting for some input to read i.e. blocking. context switching T2 is active and sets running to false, closes the socket context switching because T1 was blocking and T2 closed the socket, T1 throws an Exception. What i want is to catch this SocketException. i can't put a try/catch(SocketException) in T1.run(). So how can i catch it in T1's running-method? If it's not possible to catch it in T1's running, then how can i catch it elsewhere? PS: "Another question about the Thread Debugging" Normally when i debug the code step by step, i lose the 'active running line' on a context switch. Let's say i'm in line 20 of T1, context switch happens, let's assume the program continues from the 30.line of T2, but the debugger does not go/show to the 30.line of T2, instead the 'active running line' vanishes. So i lose the control over the code. I use Eclipse for Java and Visual Studio for C#. So what is the best way to track the code while debugging on a context switch ?

    When I try to convert a physical ISA/TMG machine to virtual using SCVMM, i keep getting an error in the Collect machine configuration step ('Scan Now' button): VMM is unable to complete the request. The connection to the agent MACHINE_NAME was lost. Ensure that the computer MACHINE_NAME exists on the network, WMI service and the agent are installed and running and that a firewall is not blocking HTTP and WMI traffic. ID: 3157 Details: The RPC server is unavailable (0x800706BA) Firewall rules allow for RPC traffic from the SCVMM machine to ISA/TMG machine.

    I used to love Bugmenot...but then they started blocking more and more sites. Now I'd say a good 75% of the time I try to find logins on bugmenot, the site is blocked. Is there a service like bugmenot that doesn't block sites? EDIT: For example, all of these sites require registration to download files, and all of them are blocked from BugMeNot. To be clear, this problem is because BugMeNot stops users from adding logins for them, not because of the individual sites themselves: dcemu.co.uk, ubuntuforums.org, club.cdfreaks.com

    We are about to set up SBS 2011 at my small company < 10 users. My collaborator wants to name the SBS domain "example.local" . I'm of the opinion we should name the SBS domain "corp.example.com" and setup DNS so the "corp" record is a NS record to the SBS server's private IP. FYI: "Example.com" isn't the real domain name and while the website is hosted outside our office, email will be stored on the SBS server in our office after passing though a spam filtering smart host hosted elsewhere too.

    Hi, Just installed ClearOS on a PC to act as our firewall firstly and then to act as an internal mailserver. My question is: Can i create a mailserver that then routes the mail through to our ISP mail server without having to contact the ISP and gain MX records etc..? We are a small business (5 PCs + dataserver) and the reason this is interesting is because we need to keep a record of outgoing mails from certain users, as well as spam and virus filtering.

    Does anyone know of any studies done to show how much email will be rejected if there is not ptr record for the SMTP banner name of an email server? Are reverse checks always done when enabled, or is it sometimes configured so if an spam program considers an email 'iffy', the reverse check is done?

  • Working around Gmail mailing-list "feature."

    I'm using Google Apps for my domain's e-mail via IMAP. Whenever I send mail to a mailing list, I don't receive a copy of my own mail back in my inbox. According to Google, this is a "feature." Is there a way to disable this "feature" so that all mail I send to mailing lists appears in my inbox just like all other e-mail? Perhaps something along the lines of this method for disabling Google's spam filter??

    So I have some custom VPS which route emails via MX record in DNS. And I need to setup gmail interface via Google Apps - this step and previous are clear. But how can I insert some middle layer, to check emails messages for special words/etc., so something like spam assasin proxy, but custom product. The question is: How could i setup proxy mail from my server = to proxy server(or application) = to gmail servers? Thank you, for any help!

    Setup Windows 7 64-bit host OS running VirtualBox 4.2, with Ubuntu 12.04 guest OS. OpenSSH server is installed and running (ssh -v localhost connects locally in the guest machine). Can SSH to external servers (no outbound Windows firewall rule blocking port 22) Can ping the IP of the guest (192.168.56.101) Problem Using PuTTY to SSH to the IP of the guest OS (192.168.56.101), PuTTY returns almost immediately with Network error: connection refused How can I diagnose & resolve this issue?
