• What good technology podcasts are out there?

  Yes, Podcasts, those nice little Audiobooks I can listen to on the way to work. With the current amount of Podcasts, it's like searching a needle in a haystack, except that the haystack happens to be the Internet and is filled with too many of these "Hot new Gadgets" stuff :( Now, even though I am mainly a .NET developer nowadays, maybe anyone knows some good Podcasts from people regarding the whole software lifecycle? Unit Testing, Continous Integration, Documentation, Deployment... So - what are you guys and gals listening to? Please note that the categorizations are somewhat subjective and may not be 100% accurate as many podcasts cover several areas. Categorization is made against what is considered the "main" area. • Useful training courses that aren't specific to a single technology

  I have possibly the best problem in the world. I have about £1600 left in a training budget and I need to find something to spend it on. I can spend it on anything that could be considered training. Books, courses, conferences, etc. I would like to find a course that would benifit a software developer but is not about learning a specific programming technology. I don't really want to spend it on a technical training course. These topics are usually best learned with a good book and some trial and error. I have also already been on a general business/management training course and a PRINCE2 project management course. I am currently working on a project on my own so am responsible for communicating with the client, requirements gathering, project management, etc., as well as the coding. What training have you found useful outside the usual technical stuff? Has anyone done any business analysis courses? What were they like? Are there any courses on some of the practicalities of working with software, e.g. automated test and deployment strategies, handling technical support? I would prefer a course in the UK but I can travel if necessary.

• Technology and language for a stable Digital Audio Workstation development

  Hi, I'm designing a cross platform (Windows/Linux/OS X) application, something like a digital audio workstation. I'd like to create a software where users have a fully featured sequencer (multiple tracks with automation) and where it is possible to create instruments using a visual language (as Pure Data/Max MSP). Ehm... I know that I've already posted a question about a related issue... But in order to decide which technology I should use, I think I'd better to make more investigation. I'm a quite experted user of audio trackers (Renoise, Protracker,...) and sequencers (FL Studio, Cubase 5), but I didn't ever try to develop even a basic audio tracker. I know just the basic theory of mixing sound and know how basically a DSP works. My questions are: Where I can find a good tutorial/guide/book about this issue? Do you think using C# (with NAudio) could dramatically reduce performance? I know C++ would be the best choice, but I find C# so elegant and easy to build and port, while C++ is so powerful and fast, but there are too #define and bad things for my taste! ;-) Thank you.

• How to maintain GridPane's fixed-size after adding elemnts dynamically

  I need to create board game that can be dynamically change. Its size can be 5x5, 6x6, 7x7 or 8x8. I am jusing JavaFX with NetBeans and Scene builder for the GUI. When the user choose board size greater than 5x5 this is what happens: This is the template on the scene builder before adding cells dynamically: To every cell in the GridPane I am adding StackPane + label of the cell number: @FXML GridPane boardGame; public void CreateBoard() { int boardSize = m_Engine.GetBoard().GetBoardSize(); int num = boardSize * boardSize; int maxColumns = m_Engine.GetNumOfCols(); int maxRows = m_Engine.GetNumOfRows(); for(int row = 0; row < maxRows ; row++) { for(int col = maxColumns - 1; col >= 0 ; col--) { StackPane stackPane = new StackPane(); stackPane.setPrefSize(150.0, 200.0); stackPane.getChildren().add(new Label(String.valueOf(num))); boardGame.add(stackPane, col, row); num--; } } boardGame.setGridLinesVisible(true); boardGame.autosize(); } The problem is the stack panes's size on the GridPane are getting smaller. I tried to set them equal minimum and maximum size but it didn't help they are still getting smaller. I searched on the web but didn't realy find same problem as mine. The only similar problem to mine was found here: Dynamically add elements to a fixed-size GridPane in JavaFX But his suggestion is to use TilePane and I need to use GridPane because this is a board game and it more easier to use GridPane when I need to do tasks such as getting to cell on row = 1 and column = 2 for example.   I just solved the first problem from Project Euler in JavaFX for the fun of it and wondered what block expressions are actually good for? Why are they superior to functions? Is it the because of the narrowed scope? Less to write? Performance? Here's the Euler example. • Declaring variables for limited scope at the head of the for loop

  In Java, you sometimes do something like this: for (int a = 1, b = 2; b < high;) { if (b % 2 == 0) { result += b; } int tmp = b; b = a + b; a = tmp; } Here, I used a for loop instead of a while loop to limit the scope of a and b. But how can I achieve this in JavaFX? The for loop doesn't seem to offer this possibility. Do I have to use a while loop?

  I don't know if this is right place to ask question, if not please move it to right area please. Is there a website/app/forum/newsletter where I can followup different softwares or technology and feature soon after their new releases. i.e. ipad iphone ios 7 release as soon as it will release with its feature. andriod next version soon after it release with its feature. coreldraw x7 whenever it will rlease zend framework new version when ever it will release. mac php new version photoshop new version ....... there are lot more list than that which goes on and on and Its difficult to follow up new technology as they come out. Any better and less time consuming way to follow up.

• Dealing with asynchronous control structures (Fluent Interface?)

  The initialization code of our Flex application is doing a series of asynchronous calls to check user credentials, load external data, connecting to a JMS topic, etc. Depending on the context the application runs in, some of these calls are not executed or executed with different parameters. Since all of these calls happen asynchronously, the code controlling them is hard to read, understand, maintain and test. For each call, we need to have some callback mechanism in which we decide what call to execute next. I was wondering if anyone had experimented with wrapping these calls in executable units and having a Fluent Interface (FI) that would connect and control them. From the top of my head, the code might look something like: var asyncChain:AsyncChain = execute(LoadSystemSettings) .execute(LoadAppContext) .if(IsAutologin) .execute(AutoLogin) .else() .execute(ShowLoginScreen) .etc; asyncChain.execute(); The AsyncChain would be an execution tree, build with the FI (and we could of course also build one without a FI). This might be an interesting idea for environments that run in a single threaded model like the Flash Player, Silverlight, JavaFX?, ... Before I dive into the code to try things out, I was hoping to get some feedback.

  Oracle’s Java Technology Evangelist Simon Ritter is well known at JavaOne for his quirky and fun-loving sessions, which, this year include: CON4644 -- “JavaFX Extreme GUI Makeover” (with Angela Caicedo on how to improve UIs in JavaFX) CON5352 -- “Building JavaFX Interfaces for the Real World” (Kinect gesture tracking and mind reading) CON5348 -- “Do You Like Coffee with Your Dessert?” (Some cool demos of Java of the Raspberry Pi) CON6375 -- “Custom JavaFX Charts: (How to extend JavaFX Chart controls with some interesting things) I recently asked Ritter about the significance of the Raspberry Pi, the topic of one of his sessions that consists of a credit card-sized single-board computer developed in the UK with the intention of stimulating the teaching of basic computer science in schools. “I don't think there's one definitive thing that makes the RP significant,” observed Ritter, “but a combination of things that really makes it stand out. First, it's the cost: $35 for what is effectively a completely usable computer. OK, so you have to add a power supply, SD card for storage and maybe a screen, keyboard and mouse, but this is still way cheaper than a typical PC. The choice of an ARM processor is also significant, as it avoids problems like cooling (no heat sink or fan) and can use a USB power brick.  Combine these two things with the immense groundswell of community support and it provides a fantastic platform for teaching young and old alike about computing, which is the real goal of the project.”He informed me that he’ll be at the Raspberry Pi meetup on Saturday (not part of JavaOne). The Kinect sensor has added a new dimension to gaming in terms of interaction; there's a Java API to access this so you can easily collect skeleton tracking data from it. Some clever people have also written libraries that can track gestures like swipes, circles, pushes, and so on. We use these to control parts of the UI. I've also experimented with a Neurosky EEG sensor that can in some ways ‘read your mind’ (well, at least measure some of the brain functions like attention and meditation).  I've written a Java library for this that I include as a way of controlling the UI. We're not quite at the stage of just thinking a command though!” Here Comes Java EmbeddedAnd what, from Ritter’s perspective, is the most exciting thing happening in the world of Java today? “I think it's seeing just how Java continues to become more and more pervasive,” he said. “One of the areas that is growing rapidly is embedded systems.  We've talked about the ‘Internet of things’ for many years; now it's finally becoming a reality. With the ability of more and more devices to include processing, storage and networking we need an easy way to write code for them that's reliable, has high performance, and is secure. Java fits all these requirements. • Performance Testing a .NET Smart Client Application (.NET ClickOnce technology)

  Has anyone ever had to run performance tests on a ClickOnce application? I have engaged with a vendor who had trouble setting up their toolset with our software because it is Smart Client based. They are understandably more geared toward purely browser-based applications. I wonder if anyone has had to tackle this before and if so would you recommend any vendors who use industry standard tools such as Load Runner (which i assume can handle the smart client)? Thanks

  I am trying to learn new stuff about jquery, html, asp .net mvc. I see two school of thoughts - Those who use oo concepts a lot and stress on more object oriented approach Those who rely heavily on algorithms and say a particular problem should take o(n) etc. I am not sure where to spend more time ? . Should I spend more time learning OO stuff or learn new stuff like jquery etc or learn travelling sales man algorithm etc ?

• Technology stack for very frequent gps data collection

  I am working on a project that involves gps data collection from many users (say 1000) every second (while they move). I am planning on using a dedicated database instance on EC2 with the mysql persistent block storage and run a ruby on rails application with nginx frontend. I haven't worked on such data collection application before. Am I missing something here? I will have a another instance which will act as application server and use the data from the same EBS. If anybody has dealt with such a system before, Any advise would be much appreciated?

• Question about migrating from ASP .NET User Controls to .NET 3.5 Master Page technology

  When migrating from an ASP .NET user control -based page with a header, footer, and menu to a Master Page using the same HTML mark-up, is it normal for CSS or javascript behaviors to change slightly? In particular, the submenu bar text now appears run together (which looks like a CSS symptom) and the graphics on the line above it appear to have an incorrect z-order. (The menu operation is javascript-based.) (I tried to paste images here but couldn't.) Also, the site is very large and we've not been given permission to redo the menu for the entire site. This is a forward-only migration. (Because I know that someone will ask.) Assuming that there are no changes in scope, what are the things that I should check? Thanks! Jim

Now i don't know java at all some people say following are used to build websites like 1)Servelts alone can build webiste 2)JSP alone can also build webiste 3)Struts 4)Spring with Hibernate 5)SEAM 6)JEE also for webistes Now guys i am confused where should i start from. Where does core JAVA fits in here. i was thinking of perhaps learning python as i know i have to learn Python only not its variations SO please guide me one thing which can solve my basic purpose of using ready made libraries of AI If i can do that with JSP then i will start with that. But i need to learn all of them then its better if can start learning python. I have 5 months to finish webiste. • What would you recommend for a large-scale Java data grid technology: Terracotta, GigaSpaces, Cohere

  I've been reading up on so-called "data grid" solutions for the Java platform including Terracotta, GigaSpaces and Coherence. I was wondering if anyone has real-world experience working any of these tools and could share their experience. I'm also really curious to know what scale of deployment people have worked with: are we talking 2-4 node clusters or have you worked with anything significantly larger than that? I'm attracted to Terracotta because of its "drop in" support for Hibernate and Spring, both of which we use heavily. I also like the idea of how it decorates bytecode based on configuration and doesn't require you to program against a "grid API." I'm not aware of any advantages to tools which use the approach of an explicit API but would love to hear about them if they do in fact exist. :) I've also spent time reading about memcached but am more interested in hearing feedback on these three specific solutions. I would be curious to hear how they measure up against memcached in the event someone has used both.

• Special technology needed for browser based chat?

  On this post, I read about the usage of XMPP. Is this sort of thing necessary, and more importantly, my main question expanded: Can a chat server and client be built efficiently using only standard HTTP and browser technologies (such as PHP and JS, or RoR and JS, etc)? Or, is it best to stick with old protocols like XMPP find a way to integrate them with my application? I looked into CampFire via LiveHTTPHeaders and Firebug for about 5 minutes, and it appears to use Ajax to send a request which is never answered until another chat happens. Is this just CampFire opening a new thread on the server to listen for an update and then returning a response to the request when the thread hears an update? I noticed that they're requesting on a specific port (8043 if memory serves me) which makes me think that they're doing something more complex than just what I mentioned. Also, the URL requested started with /tcp/ which I found interesting. Note: I don't expect to ever have more than 150 users live-chatting in all the rooms combined at the same time. I understand that if I was building a hosted pay for chat service like CampFire with thousands of concurrent users, it would behoove me to invest time in researching special technologies vs trying to reinvent the wheel in a simple way in my app. Also, if you're going to do it with server polling, how often would you personally poll to maximize response without slamming the server?
