• How do I install Apache Portable Runtime?

  My Apache is installed by yum install apache And now I'm trying to install subversion server from source following instructions here. • SQL Server 2005 Disk Configuration: Single RAID 1+0 or multiple RAID 1+0s?

  Assuming that the workload for the SQL Server is just a normal OLTP database, and that there are a total of 20 disks available, which configuration would make more sense? A single RAID 1+0, containing all 20 disks. This physical volume would contain both the data files and the transaction log files, but two logical drives would be created from this RAID: one for the data files and one for the log files. Or... Two RAID 1+0s, each containing 10 disks. One physical volume would contain the data files, and the other would contain the log files. The reason for this question is due to a disagreement between me (SQL Developer) and a co-worker (DBA). For every configuration that I've done, or seen others do, the data files and transaction log files were separated at the physical level, and were placed on separate RAIDs. However, my co-workers argument is that by placing all the disks into a single RAID 1+0, then any IO that is done by the server is potentially shared between all 20 disks, instead of just 10 disks in my suggested configuration. Conceptually, his argument makes sense to me. Also, I've found some information from Microsoft that seems to supports his position. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc966414.aspx In the section titled "3. RAID10 Configuration", showing a configuration in which all 20 disks are allocated to a single RAID 1+0, it states: In this scenario, the I/O parallelism can be used to its fullest by all partitions. Therefore, distribution of I/O workload is among 20 physical spindles instead of four at the partition level. But... every other configuration I've seen suggests physically separating the data and log files onto separate RAIDs. Everything I've found here on Server Fault suggests the same. I understand that a log files will be write heavy, and that data files will be a combination of reads and writes, but does this require that the files be placed onto separate RAIDs instead of a single RAID?

• Constructor and Destructor of a singleton object called twice

  I'm facing a problem in singleton object in c++. Here is the explanation: Problem info: I have a 4 shared libraries (say libA.so, libB.so, libC.so, libD.so) and 2 executable binary files each using one another shared library( say libE.so) which deals with files. The purpose of libE.so is to write data into a file and if the executable restarts or size of file exceeds a certain limit it is zipped and a new file is created with time stamp in name. It is using singleton object. It exports a handler class for getting and using singleton. Compressing only happens in the above said two cases. The user/loader executable can specify the starting name of file only no other control is provided by handler class. libA.so, libB.so, libC.so and libD.so have almost same behavior. They all have a class and declare and object of an handler which gets the instance of the singleton in libE.so and uses it for further purpose. All these libraries are linked to two executable binary files. If only one of the two executable runs then its fine, But if both executable runs one after other then the file of the first started executable gets compressed. Debug info: The constructor and destructor of the singleton object is called twice.(for each executable) The object of singleton is a static object and never deleted. The executable is not able to exit/return gives: glibc detected * (exe1 or exe2): double free or corruption (!prev): some_addr * Running with binaries valgrind gives that the above error is due to the destructor of the singleton object.   I have problems with apache on MAC OS Lion 10.7.5. Why ? In /var/www I have index.php which contains only one letter "k" (for tests). Edit, more info: I have restart apache milion times. • Changing farm account in Sharepoint 2010

  After changing the the farm account to a domain user account I get the following error when trying to access the Central Administration page: "Cannot connect to configuration database" After I realized the headache may not be worth it, I decided to a reinstall using the following SP user account guidelines: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee662513.aspx After getting everything up, I am getting an error when using the designated farm account under the Central Admin Website Manage Service Accounts: "Access denied" If it is the farm administrator, why would I not be able to manage service accounts? I am able to access the other part of the admin site. Also, when logging in with the farm account it lists me as a "system account" not the domain account which I used for log in. Am I missing something or is this normal behavior? Am I not suppose to login with the farm account? When I log in with the Setup account (also a domain account) I can access everything with no errors on the site. The only difference between the two accounts is one has local admin privileges on the Sharepoint farm server which is the setup account. if you notice those privileges are not necessary for the farm account according to the article cited.

• Microsoft Word 2008 on the Mac sometimes "Disappears" documents, really.

  This happens in a computer lab environment, has happened at least 3 times. We are running Microsoft Office 2008 for mac on Leopard, everything is updated. Our user's home directories are on a network drive, but the /Library/Cache folder is running locally. Typically a student will have a Word file that they have been working on, it's been saved before they even logged onto the computer that day. They log on, open the document, click the save icon (not go to File Save), sometimes even save multiple times, then close Word. The document is now gone. It's not hidden, there are no autosaves or anything in the Cache folder. Definitely not in the trash or trashes folder. It can't find it when you click on it in 'recent documents'. Searching meticulously though every folder in their home drive turns up nothing. They look using Finder, I look ssh'd as root into their home using ls -la. I look for similar files in case they renamed it by mistake. It's gone. Disappeared. Vaporized. It's happened to at least 3 different users in the past year. Much whining. Any idea?

• Asterisk relay between multiple subnets

  I wonder what's the best way to go when you have phones on multiple networks which are not directly reachable. I have 3 networks 10.3.x.x 10.6.x.x 10.17.x.x My asterisk server resides on the 10.3.0.5 IP. The machines from the 10.6 and 10.17 networks are routed here through VPN tunnels. At this point we don't talk about NAT anywhere on the network just pure routing. Since the 10.3.0.5 PBX has routes back to all the subnet's it has no problem to communicate with softphones/hardphones from these ranges. The problem comes from that Asterisk (as far as I understand) only responsible for the SIP communication part not the Audio/Video transmission which is in P2P fashion done between the devices. So although a client using sipdroid from 10.6.x.x is able to connect to the pbx (10.3.0.5) and dial a bria client on the 10.17.x.x network once the phone rings out and the call establishes no audio will be transmitted simply because it has no way to directly connect there. For this there are multiple solutions described in this text: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee480411%28v=winembedded.60%29.aspx What I would prefer is to keep these networks segregated as they are now. What would be the best solution? Is it possible to actually relay through all the audio/video information through the Asterisk server? That would be the best in my case, I using Astlinux there which has a lot of other parts. Thanks

• Too many connections to Sql Server 2008

  I have an application in C# Framework 4.0. Like many app this one connects to a data base to get information. In my case this database is SqlServer 2008 Express. The database is in my machine In my data layer I’m using Enterprise Library 5.0 When I publish my app in my local machine (App Pool Classic) Windows Professional IIS 7.5 The application works fine. I’m using this query to check the number of connections my application is creating when I’m testing it. SELECT db_name(dbid) as DatabaseName, count(dbid) as NoOfConnections, loginame as LoginName FROM sys.sysprocesses WHERE dbid > 0 AND db_name(dbid) = 'MyDataBase' GROUP BY dbid, loginame When I start testing the number of connection start growing but at some point the max number of connection is 26. I think that’s ok because the app works When I publish the app to TestMachine1 • XP Mode Virtual Machine (Windows XP Professional) • IIS 5.1 It works fine, the behavior is the same, the number of connections to the database increment to 24 or 26, after that they stay at that point no matter what I do in the application. The problem: When I publish to TestMachine2 (App Pool Classic) • Windows Server 2008 R2 • IIS 7.5 I start to test the application the number of connection to the database start to grow but this time they grow very rapidly and don’t stop growing at 24 or 26, the number of connections grow till the get to be 100 and the application stop working at that point. I have check for any difference on the publications, especially in Windows Professional and Windows Server and they seem with the same parameters and configurations. Any clues why this could be happening? , any suggestions?

• imagecreatefromjpeg() stops working after server upgrade

  We have a server located at a local company's place of business running Solaris/Apache/PHP. They recently did an update to Solaris, Apache, and PHP (security update patches, etc.). Unfortunately it has caused the image manipulation portion of our software to break. imagecreatefromjpeg() is now generating the following error: Warning: imagecreatefromjpeg() [function.imagecreatefromjpeg]: '/path/to/file/filename.jpg' is not a valid JPEG file in /path/to/file/Image.class.php on line XX No PHP code was changed during the server upgrade and it was fully functional before the software upgrades. I checked the files being passed to imagecreatefromjpeg() and they are indeed valid (they open successfully in both image editing software and in my browser). I checked the permissions of the directory from which the files are being opened and they do have read permission. GD library is enabled. I'm not sure what else I can check. Based on the scenario above I am guessing something changed in the software but I don't know what it could be. PHP was version 5.2.5 and is now 5.2.13. I appreciate any guidance as to what could be cause of this issue.

• How to diagnose computer freezing problem

  I have a laptop (a Medion from Aldi) that tends to hang quite often - so often, in fact, that several attempts to install Windows XP or Ubuntu on it have all failed. However, I am able to boot and run Ubuntu as found on the standard Ubuntu 10.10 installation image. I have done this two times thus far. The first time everything was running smoothly, until at some point the GUI (i.e. X) became unresponsive. The cursor kept moving with the mouse, but menus would no longer show and clicking things no longer produced any response. So I switched to the consoles (Ctrl-F1, Ctrl-F2, etc., which in this setup automatically run shells. The shells were still responsive, and the cd command would still work, but any command that invoked an executable (e.g. /bin/ls or cd /bin; ./find caused the shell to hang up uninterruptibly. My hypothesis was that all attempts at disk access were hanging up, but I didn't actually try a command like echo /proc/$$ or while read line; do echo $line; done < /var/log/syslog to verify this. Another possibility is that an essential system library is cached in memory and somehow failing to function properly. The second time I left the system running overnight and it didn't hang itself spontaneously. I'm not sure I have the patience to just twiddle with the running system until the condition reappears, and I'm, not sure what to do once it does. Clearly we can rule out a software cause. It seems disk access related, but clearly it's not permanent hard disk failure because the system will reboot just fine. What kind of hardware problem might produce these symptoms? Can it be a memory problem?

• Make eix available version match emerge

  We have out Gentoo hosts using a binhost with EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--getbinpkgonly --usepkgonly" in the make.conf file so that the host only pulled down the binary hosts. All works well from that side. I use eix to check on software versions for upgrades but have hit a problem where eix will see an available version ahead of what is available on the binserver. Using glibc as an example ietpl [VE] / # emerge -s glibc Searching... [ Results for search key : glibc ] [ Applications found : 1 ] * sys-libs/glibc Latest version available: 2.14.1-r3 Latest version installed: 2.14.1-r3 Homepage: Description: GNU libc6 (also called glibc2) C library License: LGPL-2 Then eix reports a higher version available ietpl [VE] / # export LASTVERSION='{last}<version>{}' ietpl [VE] / # /usr/bin/eix --nocolor --format '<category> <name> [<installedversions:LASTVERSION>] [<bestversion:LASTVERSION>] \n' --exact --category-name sys-libs/glibc sys-libs glibc [2.14.1-r3] [2.15-r2] What I'm after is for eix to report the latest version available as 2.14.1-r3 like emerge. I've a feeling this is possible since without any formatting, eix returns Available versions: (2.2) ~2.9_p20081201-r3!s 2.10.1-r1!s 2.11.3!s ~2.12.1-r3!s 2.12.2!s{tbz2} ~2.13-r2!s 2.13-r4!s ~2.14!s ~2.14.1-r2!s 2.14.1-r3!s{tbz2} ~2.15-r1!s 2.15-r2!s ~2.15-r3!s **2.16.0!s **9999!s correctly tagging the latest unmasked binary package with {tbz2} I would have thought that the binary flag would do it, but that returns no matches --binary Match packages with *.tbz2 files.

• WINDOWS 7: Make the contents of two folders appear in one

  In Windows 7, I have three folders: "Images", "assets" and "all". I want the contents of "Images " and "assets" to appear in "all" automatically without copying those files into that folder (e.g. I don't want to duplicate the files). I also only want the contents to be copied over and not the folders themslves (The reason for this is that if the folders are copied over, they will become sub-directories. I am using a printing hot folder that access "all" but it can't see any subdirectories in "all"). When Images and Assets are updated (e.g. with files being added or deleted), "all" should automatically update as well. How can I do this? This is what I have tried: Libraries: This is a feature built into Windows. It works exactly as I want. However, the print hot folder cannot recognise the library as a folder. Sym Link Extension: I can use this to make the "images" and "assets" folders appear as a sub directories of "all". However, I want the contents of "images"/"assets" to appear in the "all" folder (I don't want the directories to appear as sub directories, because as stated, the print hot folder cannot access sub directories).

• What are the side effects of disabling an Exchange mailbox?

  When working with Exchange Server 2007 or newer, disabling a mailbox is a fairly common operation. However, the Technet documentation has no details about the side effects of disabling a mailbox. This is all it says. "This task removes all the Exchange attributes from the user object in Active Directory. Based on the deleted items retention policy, the Exchange store will retain mailbox data for the user object." Perhaps the boss has delegated calendar control to a secretary. Maybe a team of staff members all share access to a public folder. Perhaps a power user has been granted the ability to receive email at several different addresses. Two clear questions come to mind. What happens to links between mailboxes after a mailbox is disconnected? Can the Disable-Mailbox operation be easily undone?

• How to store Movies on a separate volume from the iTunes media folder?

  I have a rather enormous Music collection. The music itself is approaching the 1TB mark. I am storing that on an external drive already. My iTunes library files are in their default location (/Users/me/Music/iTunes). My iTunes media folder is on an external drive /Volumes/iTunes/iTunes Music This has been working as expected. Now I would like to store just the contents of the Movies folder in the iTunes media folder on a separate drive. Apparently, iTunes doesn't like aliases or symlinks. I saw somewhere that one could mount a volume in a different directory than the default /Volumes. I would like to permanently mount my new Movies volume in the directory /Volumes/iTunes/iTunes Music/Movies. I know there is a command to do this, but how does one configure Mac OS 10.6.4 to always automatically mount that volume in this directory? I hope someone can enlighten me... If I find a solution, I can finally import all my movies into iTunes and be able to search them and stuff - it would be a dream. Thanks, M

• How do I change the default ftp folder in Mac OS X 10.6?

  I'm running WordPress 2.9.1 from a Mac running 10.6.3. WordPress is installed to the /Library/WebServer/Documents folder. WordPress has a feature called Auto Update. Clicking an auto update button will download and install updated versions of the WordPress software, or third-party plugin tools. It's a convenient way to keep things up to date. WordPress uses FTP to download the files. I've enabled FTP and set up a user account and opened the requisite ports in my firewall for FTP traffic. This doesn't seem to be enough for my self-hosted installation, though. I'm sure this feature was originally designed for someone who has access to a remote shared webserver, and that it's merely a configuration challenge related to the FTP setup. I feel that if I can adjust the initial directory that the FTP service presents to the AutoUpdate feature, everything else will work properly. So, my question is, how do I adjust what folder is presented when a given user connects to a Mac running 10.6.3 via FTP?

• Node.js Adventure - When Node Flying in Wind

  In the first post of this series I mentioned some popular modules in the community, such as underscore, async, etc.. I also listed a module named “Wind (zh-CN)”, which is created by one of my friend, Jeff Zhao (zh-CN). Now I would like to use a separated post to introduce this module since I feel it brings a new async programming style in not only Node.js but JavaScript world. If you know or heard about the new feature in C# 5.0 called “async and await”, or you learnt F#, you will find the “Wind” brings the similar async programming experience in JavaScript. By using “Wind”, we can write async code that looks like the sync code. The callbacks, async stats and exceptions will be handled by “Wind” automatically and transparently.   What’s the Problem: Dense “Callback” Phobia Let’s firstly back to my second post in this series. As I mentioned in that post, when we wanted to read some records from SQL Server we need to open the database connection, and then execute the query. In Node.js all IO operation are designed as async callback pattern which means when the operation was done, it will invoke a function which was taken from the last parameter. For example the database connection opening code would be like this. 1: sql.open(connectionString, function(error, conn) { 2: if(error) { 3: // some error handling code 4: } 5: else { 6: // connection opened successfully 7: } 8: }); And then if we need to query the database the code would be like this. I would like call this “Dense Callback Phobia”. So it’s very hard to understand what on earth this code will do. And since Node.js utilizes non-blocking IO mode, we cannot invoke those operations one by one, as they will be executed concurrently. For example, in this post when I tried to copy the records from Windows Azure SQL Database (a.k.a. WASD) to Windows Azure Table Storage, if I just insert the data into table storage one by one and then print the “Finished” message, I will see the message shown before the data had been copied. This is because all operations were executed at the same time. But it cannot promise that the records will be inserted in sequence. It’s available in NPM so that we can install it through “npm install wind”. Now let’s create a very simple Node.js application as the example. This application will take some website URLs from the command arguments and tried to retrieve the body length and print them in console. Then at the end print “Finish”. I’m going to use “request” module to make the HTTP call simple so I also need to install by the command “npm install request”. This is because in this code the request command, console logging command are executed asynchronously and concurrently. Now let’s introduce “Wind” to make them executed in order, which means it will request the websites one by one, and print the message at the end.   First of all we need to import the “Wind” package and make sure the there’s only one global variant named “Wind”, and ensure it’s “Wind” instead of “wind”. 1: var Wind = require("wind");   Next, we need to tell “Wind” which code will be executed asynchronously so that “Wind” can control the execution process. In “Wind” a “Task” means an operation will be finished in some time in the future. A “Task” can be started by invoke its start() method, but no one knows when it actually will be finished. The Wind.Async.Task.create helped us to create a task. The only parameter is a function where we can put the actual operation in, and then notify the task object it’s finished successfully or failed by using the complete() method. In the code above I invoked the request method. If it retrieved the response successfully I set the status of this task as “success” with the URL and body length. If it failed I set this task as “failure” and pass the error out.   Next, we will change the main() function. In “Wind” if we want a function can be controlled by Wind we need to mark it as “async”. Someone may assume that Wind utilizes “eval” to execute some code dynamically while “eval” is very low performance. But I would say, Wind does NOT use “eval” to run the code. It only use “eval” as a flag to know which code should be compiled at runtime. When the code was firstly been executed, Wind will check and find “eval(Wind.compile(“async”, function”. So that it knows this function should be compiled. Then it utilized parse-js to analyze the inner JavaScript and generated the anonymous code in memory. Then it rewrite the original code so that when the application was running it will use the anonymous one instead of the original one. Since the code generation was done at the beginning of the application was started, in the future no matter how long our application runs and how many times the async function was invoked, it will use the generated code, no need to generate again. So there’s no significant performance hurt when using Wind.   Wind in My Previous Demo Let’s adopt Wind into one of my previous demonstration and to see how it helps us to make our code simple, straightforward and easy to read and understand. In this post when I implemented the functionality that copied the records from my WASD to table storage, the logic would be like this. 1, Open database connection. 2, Execute a query to select all records from the table. 3, Recreate the table in Windows Azure table storage. 4, Create entities from each of the records retrieved previously, and then insert them into table storage. 5, Finally, show message as the HTTP response. But as the image below, since there are so many callbacks and async operations, it’s very hard to understand my logic from the code. Now let’s use Wind to rewrite our code. First of all, of course, we need the Wind package. Then we need to include the package files into project and mark them as “Copy always”. Add the Wind package into the source code. Pay attention to the variant name, you must use “Wind” instead of “wind”. 1: var express = require("express"); 2: var async = require("async"); 3: var sql = require("node-sqlserver"); 4: var azure = require("azure"); 5: var Wind = require("wind"); Now we need to create some async functions by using Wind. It’s very easy to know what this function does even though without any comments. When user go to URL “/was/copyRecords” we will execute the function above. As we can see the functions executed one by one and then finally the response back to me browser.   Scaffold Functions in Wind Wind provides not only the async flow control and compile functions, but many scaffold methods as well. We can build our async code more easily by using them. I’m going to introduce some basic scaffold functions here. In the code above I created some functions which wrapped from the original async function such as open database, create table, etc.. All of them are very similar, created a task by using Wind.Async.Task.create, return error or result object through Task.complete function. In fact, Wind provides some functions for us to create task object from the original async functions. If the original async function only has a callback parameter, we can use Wind.Async.Binding.fromCallback method to get the task object directly. For example the code below returned the task object which wrapped the file exist check function. 1: var Wind = require("wind"); 2: var fs = require("fs"); 3:  4: fs.existsAsync = Wind.Async.Binding.fromCallback(fs.exists); In Node.js a very popular async function pattern is that, the first parameter in the callback function represent the error object, and the other parameters is the return values. In this case we can use another build-in function in Wind named Wind.Async.Binding.fromStandard. So I personally suggest writing the wrapped method manually.   Another scaffold method in Wind is the parallel tasks coordination. In this example, the steps of open database, retrieve records and recreated table should be invoked one by one, but it can be executed in parallel when copying data from database to table storage. In Wind there’s a scaffold function named Task.whenAll which can be used here. Task.whenAll accepts a list of tasks and creates a new task. It will be returned only when all tasks had been completed, or any errors occurred. It also includes exception solution which means any exceptions will be reported to the caller function.   Summary In this post I introduced a Node.js module named Wind, which created by my friend Jeff Zhao. As you can see, different from other async library and framework, adopted the idea from F# and C#, Wind utilizes runtime code generation technology to make it more easily to write async, callback-based functions in a sync-style way. By using Wind there will be almost no callback, and the code will be very easy to understand. Currently Wind is still under developed and improved. • Project compilation requires a class that is not used anywhere

  When I build with ant my project that uses libgdx, I get a strange error. It says that a class com.google.gwt.dom.client.ImageElement is not found, but it isn't used at all in the code. How can I find what makes this class necessary? Even searching over the whole project doesn't give any results. It says that error is at PixmapTextureAtlas.java:16 (class source), but there is no code that uses that ImageElement class. Adding the library containing com.google.gwt.dom.client.ImageElement class helps, of course, but I'd like to figure out why this class in needed. • Generating moderately interesting images

  Abstract: Can you propose a mathematical-ish algorithm over a plane of pixels that will generate a moderately interesting image, preferably one that on the whole resembles something? The story thus far: Once upon a time I decided in an effort to reduce cycle waste on my (admittedly too) numerous computers, and set out to generate images in a moderately interesting fashion; using a PRNG and some clever math to create images that would, on the whole, resemble something. Or at least, that was the plan. As it turns out, clever math requires being a clever mathematician; this I am not. At some length I arrived at a method that preferred straight lines (as these are generally the components of which our world is made), perhaps too strongly. The result is mildly interesting; resembling, perhaps, city grids as such: Now for the question proper: Given the source code of this little program; can you improve upon it and propose a method that gives somewhat more interesting results? (e.g. not city grids, but perhaps faces, animals, geography, what have you) This is also meant as a sort of challenge; I suppose and as such I've set down some completely arbitrary and equally optional rules: The comments in the code says it all really. Suggestions and "solutions" should edit the algorithm itself, not the surrounding framework, except as for to fix errors that prevents the sample from compiling. The code should compile cleanly with a standard issue C compiler. (If the example provided doesn't, oops! Tell me, and I'll fix. :) The method should, though again, this is optional, not need to elicit help from your friendly neighborhood math library. Solutions should probably be deliverable by simply yanking out whatever is between the snip lines (the ones that say you should not edit above and below, respectively), with a statement to the effect of what you need to add to the preamble in particular. The code requires a C compiler and libpng to build; I'm not entirely confident that the MinGW compiler provides the necessities, but I would be surprised if it didn't. For Debian you'll want the libpng-dev package, and for Mac OS X you'll want the XCode tools.. The source code can be downloaded here. • Records not being saved to core data sqlite file

  I'm a complete newbie when it comes to iOS programming and much less Core Data. It's rather non-intuitive for me, as I really came into my own with programming with MATLAB, which I guess is more of a 'scripting' language. At any rate, my problem is that I had no idea what I had to do to create a database for my application. So I read a little bit and thought I had to create a SQL database of my stuff and then import it. Long story short, I created a SQLite db and I want to use the work I have already done to import stuff into my CoreData database. I tried exporting to comma-delimited files and xml files and reading those in, but I didn't like it and it seemed like an extra step that I shouldn't need to do. So, I imported the SQLite database into my resources and added the sqlite framework. I have my core data model setup and it is setting up the SQLite database for the model correctly in the background. When I run through my program to add objects to my entities, it seems to work and I can even fetch results afterward. However, when I inspect the Core Data Database SQLite file, no records have been saved.
