• Connecting client (on VirtualBox) and server (on localhost) using CORBA - org.omg.CORBA.BAD_PARAM:

  Im working now on simple gui appllication in Java/C++ and CORBA. I want my client on VirtualBox connect to server on localhost. When I have a simple app, like a calc I wrote about earlier its just fine. But when it comes to run client which needs some args witch javas -cp option, Im getting errors. (Theres no such problem when I have both client and server in localhost!) • C# XMLSerializer fails with List<T>

  Help... I'm using a singleton class to save all my settings info. It's first utilized by calling Settings.ValidateSettings(@"C:\MyApp") The problem I'm having is that 'List Contacts' is causing the xmlserializer to fail to write the settings file, or to load said settings. If I comment out the List then I have no problems saving/loading the xml file. What am I doing wrong... • .NET OCRing an Image

  I'm trying to use MODI to OCR a window's program. Why can MODI handle the original bitmap but not the smaller version taken from it?

• Silverlight 4 DataBinding: Binding to ObservableCollection<string> not working anymore

  Upgrading from SL3 - SL4. First problem: this throws a parser exception: <StackPanel Name={Binding} /> (same with x:Name) Collection is ObservableCollection<string>. Worked fine in SL3. So it seems that SL4 doen't allow binding to the Name property. Huh? So: changed to <StackPanel Tag={Binding} /> ... since I just need to ID the control in code behind.   I'm creating a thread that looks for a window. When it finds the window, it overrides its windowproc, and handles WM_COMMAND and WM_CLOSE. But I am seeing two instances of bad behavior in order of badness: If I do not close the dialog within a minute or so, the app crashes. Is this because the thread is getting garbage collected? This would kind of make sense, as far as GC can tell the thread is done? If this is the case, (and I don't know that it is), how can I make the thread stay around as long as the dialog is around? If I immediately close the dialog with the 'X' button (WM_CLOSE) the app crashes. I believe its crashing in the windowproc, but I can't get a breakpoint in there. I'm getting an AccessViolationException, The exception says "Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt." Its a race condition, but of what I don't know. FYI, I had been reseting the old windowproc once I processed the commands, but that was crashing even more often! Any ideas on how I can solve these issues?

• WCF Self Host Service - Endpoints in C#

Trying to make something up which will accept a query string and return some text but have have a few issues: All the documentation talks about endpoints being created automatically for each base address if they are not found in a config file. This doesn't seem to be the case for me, I get the "Service has zero application endpoints..." exception. • How to packing Resources in Maven Project?

  I am looking for suggestion in putting image file maven web project. One of classes under src/main/java need to use an image file. My problem is, if i put image file under src/main/webapp/images then application server cannot find that path on runtime(where myeclipse can ) because war archive do not have specified path "src/main/webapp/images". My question is where should i put the image file that my project can find it without prompting any error or exception. • Consuming Web Services requiring Authentication from behind Proxy server

  Hi All, I've seen a number of post about Proxy Authentication, but none that seams to address this problem. I'm building a SharePoint Web Service consuming desktop application, using Java, JAX-WS in NetBeans. I have a working prototype, that can query the server for authentication mode, successfully authenticate and retrieve a list of web site. However, if I run the same app from a network that is behind a proxy server (the proxy does not require authentication), then I'm running into trouble. The normal -dhttp.proxyHost ... settings does not seam to help any. But I have found that by creating a ProxySelector class and setting it as default, I can regain access to the authentication web service, but I still can't retrieve the list of web sites from the SharePoint server. It's almost as if the authentication I provide is going to the proxy rather than the SharePoint server. Anyone have any experience on how to make this work? • How can I turn a string of text into a BigInteger representation for use in an El Gamal cryptosystem

  I'm playing with the El Gamal cryptosystem, and my goal is to be able to encipher and decipher long sequences of text. I have come up with a method that works for short sequences, but does not work for long sequences, and I cannot figure out why. El Gamal requires the plaintext to be an integer. I have turned my string into a byte[] using the .getBytes() method for Strings, and then created a BigInteger out of the byte[]. After encryption/decryption, I turn the BigInteger into a byte[] using the .toByteArray() method for BigIntegers, and then create a new String object from the byte[]. This works perfectly when i call ElGamalEncipher with strings up to 129 characters. With 130 or more characters, the output produced is garbled. Can someone suggest how to solve this issue? Is this an issue with my method of turning the string into a BigInteger? If so, is there a better way to turn my string of text into a BigInteger and back? • ExecuteNonQuery on a stored proc causes it to be deleted

  This is a strange one. I have a Dev SQL Server which has the stored proc on it, and the same stored proc when used with the same code on the UAT DB causes it to delete itself! Has anyone heard of this behaviour? • R Install/Update on Mac OS X (Snow Leopard): where does R put files during install/config?

  In sum, there's a stray preference-like file or two (probably just one) that i can't find. Here's the whole story: I recently attempted to update my R install from 2.10 to 2.11. As i have done before, i installed from source. I know that all of the dependencies are correctly installed and made available to R, because my prior install worked fine. When i upgraded to 2.11, i am unable to install packages (no exception thrown, it just doesn't appear to complete the install and is unresponsive so i have to quit + restart R. Given i install from source, there are any number of points in the process that i could have messed up. What i need to do now is "start over" which requires that i clear out my my prior install. I am having trouble doing that. There is still at least one preference file or something like that i can't find and one of these is causing the problem, so i need to find it and terminate it with extreme prejudice before i do a fresh install. Although i set a number of flags during the install, i have never opted out of the default install locations during the config step. There has to be one or more preference files still in my file structure (and that's also accessible to the new install of R) because after i follow all of the steps below, then do a fresh install, when i start R for the first time, some of my preferences have persisted (e.g., quartz settings, GUI background color, editor selection, etc.). Again, the problem is that i just cannot locate those files. Finally, the problem can't be that during my last install from source, i inadvertently caused a preference file to be sent to an off-spec location--because again, a fresh R install (whether from source or from the OS X binaries) is finding those files Here's what i've done prior to attempting a clean install of R: Removed files from these locations: ~/.RData ~/.RHistory /Applications/R64.app /Applications/R.app /Library/Frameworks/R.framework (i also removed all symlinks from these) Cleared all RAM and disk caches, in particular the directory where i know R caches: ~/Library/Caches/R* (in fact i've cleared this entire directory) Checked for all 'hidden' files in the OS X directories where login/startup files are often placed: /etc/ ~/ In addition, i've checked R-help, and i've also read through the relevant portions of 'R Installation and Administration'--no luck. I've also searched searched my file structure using the various bash utilities, which nearly always solves problems of this sort quite easily, but in this case obviously searching by name or even pattern is more problematic.

  I have URLs like http://example.com/depict?smiles=CO&width=200&height=200 (and with several other optional arguments) My urls.py contains: urlpatterns = patterns('', (r'^$', 'cansmi.index'), (r'^cansmi$', 'cansmi.cansmi'), url(r'^depict$', cyclops.django.depict, name="cyclops-depict"), I can go to that URL and get the 200x200 PNG that was constructed, so I know that part works. In my template from the "cansmi.cansmi" response I want to construct a URL for the named template "cyclops-depict" given some query parameters. I thought I could do {% url cyclops-depict smiles=input_smiles width=200 height=200 %} where "input_smiles" is an input to the template via a form submission. In this case it's the string "CO" and I thought it would create a URL like the one at top. This template fails with a TemplateSyntaxError: Caught an exception while rendering: Reverse for 'cyclops-depict' with arguments '()' and keyword arguments '{'smiles': u'CO', 'height': 200, 'width': 200}' not found. This is a rather common error message both here on StackOverflow and elsewhere. In every case I found, people were using them with parameters in the URL path regexp, which is not the case I have where the parameters go into the query. That means I'm doing it wrong. How do I do it right? That is, I want to construct the full URL, including path and query parameters, using something in the template. • Defining where on the page the flowdocument I am printing will 'start' and 'end'

  Dear community. I am almost done with implementing a printing functionality, but I am having trouble getting the last hurdle done with. My problem is, that I am printing some reports, consisting of a header (with information about the person the report is about), a footer (with a page number) and the content in the middle, which is a FlowDocument. Since the flowdocuments can be fairly long, It is very possible that they will span multiple pages. My approach is to make a custom FlowDocumentPaginator which derives from DocumentPaginator. In there i define my header and my footer. However, when I print my page, the flowdocument and my header and footer are on top of eachother. • Experienced developer trying to get outsourcing contract with current client.

  I work for a major bank as a contract software developer. I've been there a few months, and without exception this place has the worst software practices I've ever seen. The software my team makes has no formal testing, terrible code (not reusable, hard to read, etc), minimal documentation, no defined development process and an absolutely sickening amount of waste due to bureaucratic overhead. Part of my contract is to maintain a group of thousands of very poorly written batch jobs. When one of the jobs fails (read: crashes), it's a developers job to look at the source, figure out what's wrong, fix it, and check it in. There is no quality assurance process or auditing of the results whatsoever. Once the developer says "it works" a manager signs off and it goes into production. What's disturbing is that these jobs essentially grab market data and put it into a third-party risk management system, which provides the bank with critical intelligence. I've discovered the disturbing truth that this has been happening since the 90s and nobody really has evidence the system is getting the correct data! Without going into details, an issue arose on Friday that was so horrible I actually stormed out of the place. I was ready to quit, but I decided to just get out to calm my nerves and possibly go back Monday. I've been reflecting today on how to handle this. I have realized that, in probably less than 6 months, I could (with 2 other developers) remake a large component of this system. The new system would provide them with, as primary benefits, a maintainable codebase less prone to error and a solid QA framework. To do it properly I would have to be outside the bank, the internal bureaucracy is just too much. And moreover, I think a bank is fundamentally not a place that can make good software. This is my plan. Write a report explaining in depth all the problems with their current system Explain why their software practices fail and generate a tremendous amount of error and waste. Use this as the basis for claiming the project must be developed externally. Write a high level development plan, including what resources I will require Hand 1,2,3 to my manager, hopefully he passes it up the chain. Worst case he fires me, but this isn't so bad. Convinced Executive decides to award my company a contract for the new system I have 8 years experience as a software contractor and have delivered my share of successful software products, but all working in-house for small/medium sized companies. When I read this over, I think I have a dynamite plan. But since this is the first time doing something this bold so I have my doubts. My question is, is this a good idea? If you think not, please spare no detail.

• Why is numpy's einsum faster than numpy's built in functions?

  Lets start with three arrays of dtype=np.double. Timings are performed on a intel CPU using numpy 1.7.1 compiled with icc and linked to intel's mkl. A AMD cpu with numpy 1.6.1 compiled with gcc without mkl was also used to verify the timings. The primary exception being np.dot as it calls DGEMM from a BLAS library. So why is np.einsum faster that other numpy functions that are equivalent? I believe this is the correct answer, but have not been able to confirm it. Some limited proof can be found by changing the dtype of input array and observing speed difference and the fact that not everyone observes the same trends in timings.

The original VB application has some simple embedded flash games with token and point counters. The token and point values are being passed as variables between the application and the game. I'm trying to achieve the same effect in my PHP port without modifying the actionscript code( using the variables in actionscript that already exist).
