• What does a WinForm application need to be designed for usability, and be robust, clean, and profess

  One of the principal problems impeding productivity in software implementation is the classic conundrum of “reinventing the wheel”. Of late I am a .NET developer and even the wonderful wizardry of .NET and Visual Studio covers only a portion of this challenging issue. Below I present my initial thoughts both on what is available and what should be available from .NET on a WinForm, focusing on good usability. That is, aspects of an application exposed to the user and making the user experience easier and/or better. (I do include a couple items not visible to the user because I feel strongly about them, such as diagnostics.) I invite you to contribute to these lists. LIST A: Components provided by .NET These are substantially complete components provided by .NET, i.e. those requiring at most trivial coding to use. “About” dialog -- add it with a couple clicks then customize. Persist settings across invocations -- .NET has the support; just use a few lines of code to glue them together. Migrate settings with a new version -- a powerful one, available with one line of code. Tooltips (and infotips) -- .NET includes just plain text tooltips; third-party libraries provide richer ones. Diagnostic support -- TraceSources, TraceListeners, and more are built-in. Internationalization -- support for tailoring your app to languages other than your own. LIST B: Components not provided by .NET These are not supplied at all by .NET or supplied only as rudimentary elements requiring substantial work to be realized. Splash screen -- a small window present during program startup with your logo, loading messages, etc. Tip of the day -- a mini-tutorial presented one bit at a time each time the user starts your app. Check for available updates -- facility to query a server to see if the user is running the latest version of your app, then provide a simple way to upgrade if a new version is found. Maximize to multiple monitors -- the canonical window allows you to maximize to a single monitor only; in my apps I allow maximizing across multiple monitors with a click. Taskbar notifier -- flash the taskbar when your backgrounded app has new info for the user. Options dialogs -- multi-page dialogs letting the user customize the app settings to his/her own preferences. Progress indicator -- for long running operations give the user feedback on how far there is left to go. Memory gauge -- an indicator (either absolute or percentage) of how much memory is used by your app. LIST C: Stylistic and/or tiny bits of functionality This list includes bits of functionality that are too tiny to merit being called a component, along with stylistic concerns (that admittedly do overlap with the Windows User Experience Interaction Guidelines). Design a form for resizing -- unless you are restricting your form to be a fixed size, use anchors and docking so that it does what is reasonable when enlarged or shrunk by the user. Set tab order on a form -- repeated tab presses by the user should advance from field to field in a logical order rather than the default order in which you added fields. Adjust controls to be aware of operating modes -- When starting a background operation with, for example, a “Go” button, disable that “Go” button until the operation completes. Provide access keys for all menu items (per UXGuide). Provide shortcut keys for commonly used menu items (per UXGuide). Set up some (global or important or common) shortcut keys without associating to menu items. Allow some menu items to be invoked with or without modifier keys (shift, control, alt) where the modifier key is useful to vary the operation slightly. Hook up Escape and Enter on child forms to do what is reasonable. Decorate any library classes with documentation-comments and attributes -- this allows Visual Studio to leverage them for Intellisense and property descriptions. Spell check your code! • MAMP + Python MySQLDB - trouble installing

  I'm currently running the latest version of MAMP on my Snow Leopard OSX, and I'm trying to install MySQLDB. Downloaded: MySQL-python-1.2.3c1 I went into the setup_posix.py and adjusted the location of the mysql_config to the one in MAMP: mysql_config.path = "/Applications/MAMP/Library/bin/mysql_config" When trying to build I get the error below. • LSI 9285-8e and Supermicro SC837E26-RJBOD1 duplicate enclosure ID and slot numbers

  I am working with 2 x Supermicro SC837E26-RJBOD1 chassis connected to a single LSI 9285-8e card in a Supermicro 1U host. There are 28 drives in each chassis for a total of 56 drives in 28 RAID1 mirrors. The problem I am running in to is that there are duplicate slots for the 2 chassis (the slots list twice and only go from 0 to 27). All the drives also show the same enclosure ID (ID 36). However, MegaCLI -encinfo lists the 2 enclosures correctly (ID 36 and ID 65). My question is, why would this happen? Is there an option I am missing to use 2 enclosures effectively? This is blocking me rebuilding a drive that failed in slot 11 since I can only specify enclosure and slot as parameters to replace a drive. When I do this, it picks the wrong slot 11 (device ID 46 instead of device ID 19). Adapter #1 is the LSI 9285-8e, adapter #0 (which I removed due to space limitations) is the onboard LSI. After getting in contact with a very knowledgeable Supermicro tech, they provided us with a tool called Xflash (doesn't appear to be readily available on their FTP). The first 2 enclosures logical ID is partially masked out where the 3rd one (which has a correct unique enclosure ID) is not. We pointed this out to Supermicro and were able to confirm that this address is supposed to be set during manufacturing and there was a problem with a certain batch of these enclosures where the logical ID was not set. We believe that the RAID controller is determining the ID based on the logical ID and since our first 2 enclosures have the same logical ID, they get the same enclosure ID. We also confirmed that 0000007F is the default which comes from LSI as an ID. The next pointer that helps confirm this could be a manufacturing problem with a run of JBODs is the fact that all 6 of the enclosures that have this problem begin with 00E. I believe that between 00E8 and 00EE Supermicro forgot to program the logical IDs correctly and neglected to recall or fix the problem post production. Fortunately for us, there is a tool to manage the WWN and logical ID of the devices from Supermicro: ftp://ftp.supermicro.com/utility/ExpanderXtools_Lite/. Our next step is to schedule a shutdown of these JBODs (after data migration) and reprogram the logical ID and see if it solves the problem. • Gradle + Robolectric: Where do I put the file org.robolectric.Config.properties?

  I'm trying to setup a test using Robolectric to click on a menu button in this repository. Basic Robolectric tests will run, but I'm not able to run any project-specific test using resources because it says it can't find my AndroidManifest.xml. After running ../gradlew clean check, here's the standard output from the Robolectric html file: WARNING: No manifest file found at ./AndroidManifest.xml.Falling back to the Android OS resources only. To remove this warning, annotate your test class with @Config(manifest=Config.NONE). I found these instructions which indicate I should create an org.robolectric.Config.properties file, but I'm not sure where to put it. I've tried everywhere, pretty much, and despite moving the file, the path in the error message is always the same as above (./AndroidManifest.xml). This makes me think the build process has never picked up the settings in the file org.robolectric.Config.properties. I also tried the @Config(manifest="") directive but this gave me a cannot find symbol error. If I move the AndroidManifest.xml into my project directory, then I get an error about it not being able to find the path ./res/values and I wasn't able to resolve that either. Any ideas? • Beware when using .NET's named pipes in a windows forms application

  Yesterday a user of our .net ORM Profiler tool reported that he couldn't get the snapshot recording from code feature working in a windows forms application. Snapshot recording in code means you start recording profile data from within the profiled application, and after you're done you save the snapshot as a file which you can open in the profiler UI. When using a console application it worked, but when a windows forms application was used, the snapshot was always empty: nothing was recorded. Obviously, I wondered why that was, and debugged a little. Here's an example piece of code to record the snapshot. This piece of code works OK in a console application, but results in an empty snapshot in a windows forms application: var snapshot = new Snapshot(); snapshot.Record(); using(var ctx = new ORMProfilerTestDataContext()) { var customers = ctx.Customers.Where(c => c.Country == "USA").ToList(); } InterceptorCore.Flush(); snapshot.Stop(); string error=string.Empty; if(!snapshot.IsEmpty) { snapshot.SaveToFile(@"c:\temp\generatortest\test2\blaat.opsnapshot", out error); } if(!string.IsNullOrEmpty(error)) { Console.WriteLine("Save error: {0}", error); } (the Console.WriteLine doesn't do anything in a windows forms application, but you get the idea). ORM Profiler uses named pipes: the interceptor (referenced and initialized in your application, the application to profile) sends data over the named pipe to a listener, which when receiving a piece of data begins reading it, asynchronically, and when properly read, it will signal observers that new data has arrived so they can store it in a repository. In this case, the snapshot will be the observer and will store the data in its own repository. The reason the above code doesn't work in windows forms is because windows forms is a wrapper around Win32 and its WM_* message based system. Named pipes in .NET are wrappers around Windows named pipes which also work with WM_* messages. Even though we use BeginRead() on the named pipe (which spawns a thread to read the data from the named pipe), nothing is received by the named pipe in the windows forms application, because it doesn't handle the WM_* messages in its message queue till after the method is over, as the message pump of a windows forms application is handled by the only thread of the windows forms application, so it will handle WM_* messages when the application idles. The fix is easy though: add Application.DoEvents(); right before snapshot.Stop(). Application.DoEvents() forces the windows forms application to process all WM_* messages in its message queue at that moment: all messages for the named pipe are then handled, the .NET code of the named pipe wrapper will react on that and the whole process will complete as if nothing happened. It's not that simple to just say 'why didn't you use a worker thread to create the snapshot here?', because a thread doesn't get its own message pump: the messages would still be posted to the window's message pump. A hidden form would create its own message pump, so the additional thread should also create a window to get the WM_* messages of the named pipe posted to a different message pump than the one of the main window. This WM_* messages pain is not something you want to be confronted with when using .NET and its libraries. Unfortunately, the way they're implemented, a lot of APIs are leaky abstractions, they bleed the characteristics of the OS objects they hide away through to the .NET code. Be aware of that fact when using them :)

• Skewed: a rotating camera in a simple CPU-based voxel raycaster/raytracer

  TL;DR -- in my first simple software voxel raycaster, I cannot get camera rotations to work, seemingly correct matrices notwithstanding. The result is skewed: like a flat rendering, correctly rotated, however distorted and without depth. (While axis-aligned ie. unrotated, depth and parallax are as expected.) I'm trying to write a simple voxel raycaster as a learning exercise. This is purely CPU based for now until I figure out how things work exactly -- fow now, OpenGL is just (ab)used to blit the generated bitmap to the screen as often as possible. Now I have gotten to the point where a perspective-projection camera can move through the world and I can render (mostly, minus some artifacts that need investigation) perspective-correct 3-dimensional views of the "world", which is basically empty but contains a voxel cube of the Stanford Bunny. So I have a camera that I can move up and down, strafe left and right and "walk forward/backward" -- all axis-aligned so far, no camera rotations. Herein lies my problem. Screenshot #1: correct depth when the camera is still strictly axis-aligned, ie. un-rotated. Now I have for a few days been trying to get rotation to work. The basic logic and theory behind matrices and 3D rotations, in theory, is very clear to me. Yet I have only ever achieved a "2.5 rendering" when the camera rotates... fish-eyey, bit like in Google Streetview: even though I have a volumetric world representation, it seems --no matter what I try-- like I would first create a rendering from the "front view", then rotate that flat rendering according to camera rotation. Needless to say, I'm by now aware that rotating rays is not particularly necessary and error-prone. Still, in my most recent setup, with the most simplified raycast ray-position-and-direction algorithm possible, my rotation still produces the same fish-eyey flat-render-rotated style looks: Screenshot #2: camera "rotated to the right by 39 degrees" -- note how the blue-shaded left-hand side of the cube from screen #2 is not visible in this rotation, yet by now "it really should"! Now of course I'm aware of this: in a simple axis-aligned-no-rotation-setup like I had in the beginning, the ray simply traverses in small steps the positive z-direction, diverging to the left or right and top or bottom only depending on pixel position and projection matrix. As I "rotate the camera to the right or left" -- ie I rotate it around the Y-axis -- those very steps should be simply transformed by the proper rotation matrix, right? So for forward-traversal the Z-step gets a bit smaller the more the cam rotates, offset by an "increase" in the X-step. Yet for the pixel-position-based horizontal+vertical-divergence, increasing fractions of the x-step need to be "added" to the z-step. Somehow, none of my many matrices that I experimented with, nor my experiments with matrix-less hardcoded verbose sin/cos calculations really get this part right. • How to run RCU from the command line

  When I was trying to figure out how to run RCU on 64-bit Linux I found this post. It shows how to run RCU from the command line. It didn't actually work for me, so you can see my post on how to run RCU on 64-bit Linux. But, seeing how to run RCU from the command got me started thinking about running RCU from the command line to create the schema for WebCenter Content. That post got me part of the way there since it shows how run RCU silently from the command line, but to do this you need to know the name of the RCU component for WebCenter Content. I poked around in the RCU files and found the component name for WCC is CONTENTSERVER11. There is a contentserver11 directory in rcuHome/rcu/integration and when you look at the contentserver11.xml file you will see <RepositoryConfig COMP_ID="CONTENTSERVER11"> With the component name for WCC in hand I was able to use this command line to run RCU and create the schema for WCC. .../rcuHome/bin/rcu -silent -createRepository -databaseType ORACLE -connectString localhost:1521:orcl1 -dbUser sys -dbRole sysdba -schemaPrefix TEST -component CONTENTSERVER11 -f <rcu_passwords.txt To make the silent part work and not have it prompt you for the passwords needed (sys password and password for each schema) you use the -f option and specify a file containing the passwords, one per line, in the order the components are listed on the -component argument. Here is the output from rcu when I ran the above command. You can specify the name of the tablespace and temp tablespace, but they must already exist in the database before running RCU. I guess you can always create the tablespaces first using your desired sizes and options and then run RCU and specify the tablespaces you created. When looking up the command line options in the RCU doc I found it has the list of components for each product that it supports. See Appendix B in the RCU User's Guide.

• What information must never appear in logs?

  I'm about to write the company guidelines about what must never appear in logs (trace of an application). In fact, some developers try to include as many information as possible in trace, making it risky to store those logs, and extremely dangerous to submit them, especially when the customer doesn't know this information is stored, because she never cared about this and never read documentation and/or warning messages. For example, when dealing with files, some developers are tempted to trace the names of the files. For example before appending file name to a directory, if we trace everything on error, it will be easy to notice for example that the appended name is too long, and that the bug in the code was to forget to check for the length of the concatenated string. It is helpful, but this is sensitive data, and must never appear in logs. In the same way: Passwords, IP addresses and network information (MAC address, host name, etc.)¹, Database accesses, Direct input from user and stored business data must never appear in trace. So what other types of information must be banished from the logs? Are there any guidelines already written which I can use? ¹ Obviously, I'm not talking about things as IIS or Apache logs. What I'm talking about is the sort of information which is collected with the only intent to debug the application itself, not to trace the activity of untrusted entities. Edit: Thank you for your answers and your comments. Since my question is not too precise, I'll try to answer the questions asked in the comments: What I'm doing with the logs? The logs of the application may be stored in memory, which means either in plain on hard disk on localhost, in a database, again in plain, or in Windows Events. In every case, the concern is that those sources may not be safe enough. For example, when a customer runs an application and this application stores logs in plain text file in temp directory, anybody who has a physical access to the PC can read those logs. The logs of the application may also be sent through internet. For example, if a customer has an issue with an application, we can ask her to run this application in full-trace mode and to send us the log file. Also, some application may sent automatically the crash report to us (and even if there are warnings about sensitive data, in most cases customers don't read them). Am I talking about specific fields? No. I'm working on general business applications only, so the only sensitive data is business data. There is nothing related to health or other fields covered by specific regulations. But thank you to talk about that, I probably should take a look about those fields for some clues about what I can include in guidelines. Isn't it easier to encrypt the data? No. It would make every application much more difficult, especially if we want to use C# diagnostics and TraceSource. It would also require to manage authorizations, which is not the easiest think to do. Finally, if we are talking about the logs submitted to us from a customer, we must be able to read the logs, but without having access to sensitive data. So technically, it's easier to never include sensitive information in logs at all and to never care about how and where those logs are stored.

• Stale statistics on a newly created temporary table in a stored procedure can lead to poor performance

  When you create a temporary table you expect a new table with no past history (statistics based on past existence), this is not true if you have less than 6 updates to the temporary table. This might lead to poor performance of queries which are sensitive to the content of temporary tables.I was optimizing SQL Server Performance at one of my customers who provides search functionality on their website. They use stored procedure with temporary table for the search. The performance of the search depended on who searched what in the past, option (recompile) by itself had no effect. Sometimes a simple search led to timeout because of non-optimal plan usage due to this behavior. This is not a plan caching issue rather temporary table statistics caching issue, which was part of the temporary object caching feature that was introduced in SQL Server 2005 and is also present in SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2012. In this customer case we implemented a workaround to avoid this issue (see below for example for workarounds).When temporary tables are cached, the statistics are not newly created rather cached from the past and updated based on automatic update statistics threshold. Caching temporary tables/objects is good for performance, but caching stale statistics from the past is not optimal.We can work around this issue by disabling temporary table caching by explicitly executing a DDL statement on the temporary table. One possibility is to execute an alter table statement, but this can lead to duplicate constraint name error on concurrent stored procedure execution. The other way to work around this is to create an index.I think there might be many customers in such a situation without knowing that stale statistics are being cached along with temporary table leading to poor performance.Ideal solution is to have more aggressive statistics update when the temporary table has less number of rows when temporary table caching is used. I will open a connect item to report this issue.Meanwhile you can mitigate the issue by creating an index on the temporary table. You can monitor active temporary tables using Windows Server Performance Monitor counter: SQL Server: General Statistics->Active Temp Tables. • How to troubleshoot errors with TeamCity

  I'm following this guide to set up a small environment for source control and automated builds - mostly for learning what it is and how it works, but also for using in those of my hobby projects that I believe will actually be useful some day. However, at the step where he commits and builds, I fail to get a success status in the TeamCity history log. I keep getting the error described in the stack trace below. I have verified with Windows Explorer that the solution file it can't find is actually there, so I really don't know what to do. How do I fix/troubleshoot this? • What is Causing This Memory Leak in Delphi?

  I just can't figure out this memory leak that EurekaLog is reporting for my program. I'm using Delphi 2009. Here it is: Memory Leak: Type=Data; Total size=26; Count=1; The stack is: System.pas _UStrSetLength 17477 System.pas _UStrCat 17572 Process.pas InputGedcomFile 1145 That is all there is in the stack. EurekaLog is pointing me to the location where the memory that was not released was first allocated. According to it, the line in my program is line 1145 of InputGedcomFile. That line is: CurStruct0Key := 'HEAD' + Level0Key; where CurStruct0Key and Level0Key are simply defined in the procedure as local variables that should be dynamically handled by the Delphi memory manager when entering and leaving the procedure: var CurStruct0Key, Level0Key: string; So now I look at the _UStrCat procedure in the System Unit. • Instructions on using TortoiseGit to interact with an SVN repository?

  I've been using TortoiseSVN on Windows for years with local filesystem repositories for my own projects. I'm planning to start collaborating with a friend on one of the projects, and will be shifting the repository to my own website. I've read a lot of "git beats SVN!" posts over the last couple years, and figured I ought to at least see what the fuss was about. Some research turned up the "git svn" command, and that TortoiseGit claims to have some level of git-svn support. I like the idea of keeping the SVN repository, and doing some local commits or branches with git before committing them to the repository. The "shelve" command also sounds useful. Unfortunately, while there's a number of CLI git-svn tutorials, there's nothing for TortoiseGit (which admittedly seems to be still in early development). As a result, I'm having problems trying to figure out what workflow I need to get these pieces to cooperate. I have an SVN repository in D:\Projects\repositories\MyProject. I created D:\Projects\temp\gittest, and tried to do a TortoiseGit "Git Clone" of the repository. From there, I've had issues trying to indicate the location of the trunk/branches/tags folders (which are just the standard layout in my repository). I was only able to get useful results when I left those unchecked. When I did seem to get the git repository started correctly, I was able to make some changes and do a couple git commits, but then had problems doing an SVN DCommit. So, I'm hoping someone out there can provide a reasonably detailed set of instructions on how to correctly use TortoiseGit with an existing SVN repository (with the repository on either the local filesystem or on a remote server). No "don't use SVN!" responses, please - I'm interested in learning how to get these two pieces to work together. If you feel TortoiseGit's SVN support isn't mature enough to make this work, that would also be useful information. Thanks!

• Powershell Transcript is empty when running script from SQL Agent Job in 2005 SQL Server

  I have a complex Powershell script that gets run as part of a SQL 2005 Server Agent Job. The script works fine, but it uses the "Start-Transcript $strLogfile -Append" command to log all of it's actions to a transcript file. The problem is that the transcript is always empty. It adds the header and footer to indicate that the transcript is starting and stopping, but it doesn't actually log anything. Example: ********************** Windows PowerShell Transcript Start Start time: 20100304173001 Username : xxxxxxxxxxxx\SYSTEM Machine : xxxxx-xxx (Microsoft Windows NT 5.2.3790 Service Pack 2) ********************** ********************** Windows PowerShell Transcript End End time: 20100304173118 ********************** When I execute the script from a command prompt or start - run everything works just fine. Here is the command used to run the script (same command used in the Operating system CmdExec step of the SQL Agent Job) powershell.exe -File "c:\temp\Backup\backup script.ps1" I first thought it must have something to do with the script running under the System account (default SQL Agent account), but even when I tried changing the SQL Agent to run under my own personal account it still created a blank transcript. Is there any way to get PowerShell Transcripts to work when executing them as part of a 2005 SQL Server Agent Job?

  I have taken backup of SQL Server 2008 DB on server, and download them to local environment. I am trying to restore that database and it is keep on giving me following error. An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The media family on device 'C:\go4sharepoint_1384_8481.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. • jQuery Ajax call - Set variable value on success.

  Hey all, I have an application that I am writing that modifies data on a cached object in the server. The modifications are performed through an ajax call that basically updates properties of that object. When the user is done working, I have a basic 'Save Changes' button that allows them to Save the data and flush the cached object. In order to protect the user, I want to warn them if the try to navigate away from the page when modifications have been made to the server object if they have not saved. So, I created a web service method called IsInitialized that will return true or false based on whether or not changes have been saved. If they have not been saved, I want to prompt the user and give them a chance to cancel their navigation request. Here's my problem - although I have the calls working correctly, I can't seem to get the ajax success call to set the variable value on its callback function. Is there a way to use that ajax call, but still catch the window.onunload event? (without making synchronos ajax)

  Currently I have Android SDK 2.1 (+ tools revision 4). I'd like to upgrade to Android SDK 2.2. When I try to do it I'm informed I need to upgrade Android SDK Tools to revision 7 first. So I agree, the process starts and then I get an error: -= warning! =- A folder failed to be renamed or moved. On Windows this typically means that a program Is using that Folder (for example Windows Explorer or your anti-virus software.) Please momentarily deactivate your anti-virus software. Please also close any running programs that may be accessing the directory 'D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\too!s'. When ready, press YES to try again. Downloading Android SDK Tools, revision 7 Installing Android SDK Tools, revision 7 Failed to rename directory D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools to D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\temp\ToolPackage.old01. I am aware of http/https and antivirus issues. So I disactivated my AV. I also closed any application that might hold a handle to the folder. Eclipse is also closed (I start the manager via command line). However I still get the same error. Looks like the only app that can hold a handle to the folder is the manager itself, because its starting directory is the one the error complains about ('\tools'). I am on Win XP Pro + SP3. Does anyone have an idea?
