• Why is J2ee/EJBs a dying Trend?

  I might be wrong on this, but I no longer see heavy Business and Web services being hosted using J2ee technologies (Especially EJBs). Having known the power and scalability of J2ee applications, what is keeping developers/decision makers to restrict themselves to Core Java (POJOs) or even other web technologies like PHP, python. Is it the development time? Is it the Ease of configuration? (I feel this should not be a strong reason with Java EE 6, things are simplified) Of course scripting languages are faster to develop, we cannot ignore the fact that they are inherently not-as-scalable as Java Applications are (using App servers)

• Automation of testing using JUnit

  Hi, i am trying to automate manual testing of modules in my project. We are dealing with IBM Websphere Message queue software. We have a trigger component written in core java which when executed polls for availability of message in the configured queue. Its an indefinite while loop that keeps the trigger component running. I have written test cases in JUnit to put message in the queue and now will i be able to start/stop the trigger component on demand? Invoking the trigger component keeps it running and i am not getting the control back to check the expected output. If i start it in thread then the log files to which the trigger component is supposed to update when processing the message is not getting updated. How can i resolve this situation.   I'm trying to process a list of files that may or may not be up to date and may or may not yet exist. In doing so, I need to resolve the full path of an item, even though the item may be specified with relative paths. However, Resolve-Path prints and error when used with a non-existant file. For example, What's the simplest, cleanest way to resolve ".\newdir\newfile.txt" to "C:\Current\Working\Directory\newdir\newfile.txt" in Powershell? Note that System.IO.Path's static method use with the process's working directory - which isn't the powershell current location.

• NSFetchedResultsController titleForHeaderInSection with formatted NSDate

  In my Core Data app I am using a FetchedResultsController. Usually to set titles for headers in a UITableView you would implement the following method like so: - (NSString *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView titleForHeaderInSection:(NSInteger)section { id <NSFetchedResultsSectionInfo> sectionInfo = [[<#Fetched results controller#> sections] objectAtIndex:section]; return [sectionInfo name]; } where [sectionInfo name] returns a NSString. my sectionKeyPath is based on an NSDate and this all works fine apart from the section headers it gives me are the raw date description strings (e.g. 12/12/2009 12:32:32 +0100) which look a bit of a mess in a header! So I want to use a date formatter on this to make a nice header like "Apr 17 2010" but I can't do that with the [sectionInfo name] as this is NSString! Any Ideas? Many Thanks

  UITabBarController with UINavigationController "more" tab issue There is a problem with using UINavigationController in UITabBarController. I have a TabBar  with 6 items. Of course, a standart item "more" appears, and there are two UINavigationControllers that didn't fit in a TabBar. The core of the problem is: when I'm working with visible items (a first four), UIViewController can be pushed  in an UINavigationController: [self.navigationController pushViewController:userDataViewController animated:YES]; If you call on in "more" and rearrange items in such way, that a visible UINavigationController gets into "more", when calling on it userDataViewController appears.  This  userDataViewController is the last, which has got in a stack and a Back button leads back to "more", but not to the controllers, that were before a userDataViewController appeared. I understand that in fact a selector pushViewController is called from "more", and it pushes my UINavigationController in a stack, and it's not good. Maybe, someone has faced such problem and could help me to solve it? Thank you forward.

• (VB.NET + WPF) Drag + Drop (to allow user sorting) of stackpanel elements within a Scrollviewer?

  I have good model (I think!) for how to allow a user to drag an element in a stackpanel and reposition it to another location within the stackpanel. However, my Stackpanel is placed within a ScrollViewer, like this (generalized): <ScrollViewer> <StackPanel> ....First item ....Second item ....Third item ....Etc. </StackPanel> <ScrollViewer> Here is the problem, I wish to simulate the functionality of programs like word, where if I am dragging selected content (or an object) outside the viewable area, the window will scroll in the direction of the mouse to see more places to drop my nifty little object. ...i.e. If I move the mouse to the top of my ScrollViewer while dragging a stackpanel's contents, I want the scrollviewer to slowly move up so I can see more locations to drop my content. Any suggestions? If you can help me solve this, you will be a godsend!

  I have a web site that built on Visual studio 2008 and i need to run it from my computer (Win 7 Ultimate) as a server I tried to publish it to IIS and this is simply not working and i have the flowing error : Error Summary HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. Config Error This configuration section cannot be used at this path. This happens when the section is locked at a parent level. Locking is either by default (overrideModeDefault="Deny"), or set explicitly by a location tag with overrideMode="Deny" or the legacy allowOverride="false". any one can help?

  I'm having trouble retrieving 2 artifacts in my Maven/Java/Google App Engine project: com.google.appengine.orm:datanucleus-appengine:jar:1.0.7.final com.google.appengine:appengine-api-1.0-sdk:jar:1.3.4 There's a similar question posted, but each answer brings me back to the same error message. More detail I don't know if it is relevant, but rather than a version number, my original dependency for DataNucleus contained a variable. I am using Eclipse. <groupId>org.datanucleus</groupId> <artifactId>datanucleus-core</artifactId> <version>${datanucleus.version}</version> <scope>runtime</scope> I did not include my stack trace in Maven for brevity's sake.   I want to use Fluent NHibernate in commercial desktop application, and I'm little concerned about the licensing. I've downloaded Fluent NHibernate precompiled binaries, and it contains this list of files: Antlr3.Runtime.dll Castle.Core.dll Castle.DynamicProxy2.dll FluentNHibernate.dll Iesi.Collections.dll log4net.dll NHibernate.dll NHibernate.ByteCode.Castle.dll I guess I will have to add all of these files to my Inno Setup script, which will install them on user's computer. But what should I do to comply to all of the licenses associated with each file? I'm sure I'm not the first who wants to use Fluent NHibernate in commercial application, so I hope I won't have to study each of the licenses. I'm not a lawyer.

Can I rewrite the VB.NET command in C# using syntax that is valid in C# 3.5 as I was able to in VB.NET? What would the syntax be?

• Drop target - where do I register the COleDropTarget variable if the view class doesn't have OnCreat

  The MSDN site says: From your view class's function that handles the WM_CREATE message (typically OnCreate), call the new member variable's Register member function. Revoke will be called automatically for you when your view is destroyed. But I don't have an OnCreate function in the ChildView class. I do have OnCreate in the CMainFrame class. Can I register it there? What are the ramifications? PLEASE NOTE: I have it working for dropping files but I want to drop the text as a file, not at a cursor location like a text cut and paste, but rather I want the application to make a buffer to hold it, and I will treat it like a file. • DBD::Advantage and 64-bit Perl - Always 6060

  I realize that I am attempting to go beyond the "supported" behavior of the manf's released drivers for perl, after all they have only released it in package with x86 .so's. However, since I cannot use their package with x64 Perl on a RHEL 5.4 x86_64 box, and maintaining a seperate install of x86 perl just for this one package, I have made an attempt to get this puppy working thanks to released 64-bit .so's that accompany other driver packages for Advantage. What I have done to this point: download beta 10 DBI drivers, in 32 download beta 10 PHP extension (it contains 32 and x86_64) copy the required DLLs into the ads-lib location (eg /usr/local/ads/lib64) compile the Perl DBI driver with the path to the lib64's .so's Good compilation, good install, good use. The problem is that I always get : failed: [iAnywhere Solutions][Advantage SQL][ASA] Error 6060: Advantage Database Server not available on specified server. axServerConnect (SQL-HY000)(DBD: db_login/SQLConnect err=-1) Does anyone have any ideas? • Exceptions silently caught by Windows, how to handle manually?

  We're having problems with Windows silently eating exceptions and allowing the application to continue running, when the exception is thrown inside the message pump. For example, we created a test MFC MDI application, and overrode OnDraw: void CTestView::OnDraw(CDC* /*pDC*/) { *(int*)0 = 0; // Crash CTestDoc* pDoc = GetDocument(); ASSERT_VALID(pDoc); if (!pDoc) return; // TODO: add draw code for native data here } You would expect a nasty error message when running the application, but you actually get nothing at all. The program appears to be running perfectly well, but if you check the output window you will see: First-chance exception at 0x13929384 in Test.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x00000000. First-chance exception at 0x77c6ee42 in Test.exe: 0xC0150010: The activation context being deactivated is not active for the current thread of execution. I know why I'm receiving the application context exception, but why is it being handled silently? It means our applications could be suffering serious problems when in use, but we'll never know about it, because our users will never report any problems.

• Get Time in London

  How can I get the current local wall clock time (in number of millis since 1 Jan 1970) in London? Since my application can run on a server in any location, I think I need to use a TimeZone of "Europe/London". I also need to take Daylight Savings into account i.e. the application should add an hour during the "summer". I would prefer to use the standard java.util libraries. Is this correct? • Limitations in running Ruby/Rails on windows

  In the installation documentation to RoR it mentions that there are many limitations to running Ruby on Rails on Windows, and in some cases, whole libraries do not work. How bad are these limitations, should I always default to Linux to code / run RoR, and is Iron Ruby expected to fix these limitations or are they core to the OS itself? • Migrating Ruby Site from EngineYard to Heroku

  As part of a larger project I've been tasked with migrating some existing Ruby on Rails sites (built with an old version of refinerycms 0.9.6.34, at least that's the version listed in the Gemfile included with the source). I don't normally work with Ruby so I'm at a bit of a loss. The previous developers simply handed over the latest git dump as well as a db dump. I'm working first with trying to get the site up working locally on an Ubuntu 11.10 local machine before pushing up to at test Heroku install. If it's possible to just push directly to Heroku with the files they gave, then I can try that, but it's my understanding I need to get everything working and then use Heroku's tools to deploy. The previous devs said they're using ruby 1.8.7 so in Ubuntu I've done the following: aptitude install ruby1.8 ruby1.8-dev ruby1.8-full aptitude install rubygems1.8 I've restored the database and in the config directory I've made changes to the database.yml to point to the restored database. • Slow insert speed in Postgresql memory tablespace

  Hi, I have a requirement where I need to store the records at rate of 10,000 records/sec into a database (with indexing on a few fields). Number of columns in one record is 25. I am doing a batch insert of 100,000 records in one transaction block. To improve the insertion rate, I changed the tablespace from disk to RAM.With that I am able to achieve only 5,000 inserts per second. I have also done the following tuning in the postgres config: Indexes : no fsync : false logging : disabled Other information: - Tablespace : RAM - Number of columns in one row : 25 (mostly integers) - CPU : 4 core, 2.5 GHz - RAM : 48 GB I am wondering why a single insert query is taking around 0.2 msec on average when database is not writing anything on disk (as I am using RAM based tablespace). Is there something I am doing wrong? Help appreciated. Prashant

• GTK+ (GTKSharp) poor performance in Windows

  Hi, In my Mono (C#) project that is meant to be cross-platform, I am using the GTK for the UI. However one thing I noticed is, on my netbook in Archlinux, the performance is really speedy, so events such as mouse hover, and redrawing of widgets, etc, are really fast. Compared to windows (7) on dual core CPUs, the performance is really really weak. Which perplexes me. Am I doing something wrong that is warranting this difference in performance between OSes? What are some ways I can do to optimize GTK on Windows? Its really bad to take around 0.5 secs for a hover event to kick in whereas its almost immediate on a weak(er) netbook with Linux. • How can i open Thickbox from a form and feed it with data ?

  I have a simple search php script, within that script there is some html and javascript to make a search input field and a button. What i am trying to do is when someone enters a search, and presses submit, thickbox opens, and the results will be displayed in the thickbox. What i have so far is the search field and button, when i press submit, it briefly shows the thickbox, and than is overloaded by the result page, but than with no search results. • JOGL program does not compile - javac with classpath

  I want to run a HelloWorld JOGL programm on the commandline. I downloaded the .jars from jogamp.org and put the gluegen-rt.jar , jogl.all.jar , gluegen-java-src.zip , jogl-java-src.zip , gluegen-rt-natives-macosx-universal.jar , jogl-all-natives-macosx-universal.jar in a directory "jar" in my HelloWorld folder - as described in http://jogamp.org/wiki/index.php/Downloading_and_installing_JOGL . Now I try to compile with javac -classpath "jar/gluegen-rt.jar:jar/jogl.all.jar" HelloWorld.java as described on https://jogamp.org/wiki/index.php/Setting_up_a_JogAmp_project_in_your_favorite_IDE .
