  You may have noticed that Weblogic Server (WLS) 9.2.X and WLS 10.0.X releases have been removed from the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud. The Delivery Team has been asked to remove or update any product pack or product that embeds WLS 10.3.2 or earlier versions. This is consistent with general Oracle practice of removing old product versions from public distribution systems, and encourages customer usage and adoption of newer product releases such as WLS 10.3.3 or newer.  For the convenience of existing supported customers, a media request SR on My Oracle Support can be entered to obtain any removed media.  Information on how to open such an SR can be found on  MOS Doc ID 1071023.1 . OTN will also be reviewed and similar modifications may potentially be done.  The following media packs will be removed from E-Delivery this week, as of the above reason. • Who Are the BI Users in Your Neighborhood?

  By Brian Dayton on March 19, 2010 10:52 PM Forrester's Boris Evelson recently wrote a blog titled "Who are the BI Personas?" that I enjoyed for a number of reasons. It's a quick read, easy to grasp and (refreshingly) focuses on the users of technology VS the technology. As Evelson admits, he meant to keep the reference chart at a high-level because there are too many different permutations and additional sub-categories to make such a chart useful. For me, I wouldn't head into the technical permutations but more the contextual use of BI and the issues that users experience. My thoughts brought up more questions than answers such as: Context: - HOW: With the exception of the "Power User" persona--likely some sort of business or operations analyst? - WHEN: Are they using the information to make real-time decisions on the front lines (a customer service manager or shipping/logistics VP) or are they using this information for cumulative analysis and business planning? Or both? - WHERE: What areas of the business are more or less likely to rely on BI across an organization? Human Resources, Operations, Facilities, Finance--- and why are some more prone to use data-driven analysis than others? Issues: - DELAYS & DRAG ON IT?: One of the persona characteristics Evelson calls out is a reliance on IT. Every persona except for the "Power User" has a heavy reliance on IT for support. What business issues or delays does that cause to users? What is the drag on IT resources who could potentially be creating instead of reporting? - HOW MANY CLICKS: If BI is being used within the context of a transaction (sales manager looking for upsell opportunities as an example) is that person getting the information within the context of that action or transaction? Or are they minimizing screens, logging into another application or reporting tool, running queries, etc.? Who are the BI Users in your neighborhood or line of business? Do Evelson's personas resonate--and do the tools that he calls out (he refers to it as "BI Style") resonate with what your personas have or need? Finally, I'm very interested if BI use is viewed as a bolt-on...or an integrated part of your daily enterprise processes?

But the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) of Carnegie Mellon University has turned those hard choices into a game. Literally. According to the SEI website: The Hard Choices game is a simulation of the software development cycle meant to communicate the concepts of uncertainty, risk, options, and technical debt. In the quest to become market leader, players race to release a quality product to the marketplace.   JEOS stands for Just Enough Operating System.  It is  great environment for building virtual machines without all the clutter of a windowing system, games, office products, etc.  It is from Ubuntu and you install it using the Ubuntu server install, but rather than picking a standard install, press F4 and choose “Install a minimal system.” Note: The “Install a minimal virtual machine” is specific to VMWare and I plan to use VirtualBox. Be sure to include Open SSH in the install so that it installs sshd. *** Also, if you plan to install XE, you’ll need to modify the partitions to have a larger swap space (at least 1.5 G). *** Once the install is done, I find it useful to install a few other items. Update Ubuntu apt-get update Install some other tools apt-get openjdk-6-jre Yes, java will be included in any of the WebLogic installs, but I need this one if I want to do remote display (for config wizards, etc). apt-get gcc Some apps require to rebuild the kernel modules, so you’ll need a basic compiler. Install guest additions (Choose the VirtualBox Devices->Install Guest Additions…” option.  This sets up a /dev/cdrom or /dev/cdrom1.  You’ll need to manually mount this temporarily: sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt Then run the linux .bin file. Update nofile limits.  Most java apps fail with the standard ubuntu settings: edit /etc/security/limits.conf and add these lines at the end: *     soft nofile 65535 *     hard nofile 65535 root  soft nofile 65535 root  hard nofile 65535 These numbers are very high and I wouldn’t do this on a production system, but for this environment it is fin. To get rid of the annoying piix error on boot, add the following line to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file blacklist i2c_piix4

  I'm very pleased to welcome Sreelatha Doma to this blog's panel of guest authors.  Sreelatha Doma is a Principal Engineer - Database Administration in the Oracle Applications Technology Integration team, with a current focus on database technology.  She has been with Oracle since October 2005.  She was an EBS technology stack certification engineer for four years, and was involved in various technology product certifications for databases, RAC, browsers, Forms and middleware products. Prior to joining Oracle, she worked as a database administrator and Senior Technical Officer in Electronics and Communications India Limited (ECIL) and the Department of Atomic Energy.  She started her career as a software developer. Sreelatha has been in in the IT industry for over 13 years, and holds a B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering.
