• https:// search results appearing on Google for purely http:// site

  I started weeding through my site's search results from Google today, using a site: search, to determine if there are any links that cause 404s and thus need redirecting. To my amazement I noticed numerous https:// results relating to various pages. My site doesn't have a SSL certificate, doesn't serve such pages, doesn't internally link to https:// pages, doesn't include any such files in its sitemap.xml and, for all of these, never has. I decided to do a Google search for https://<my site> and found one site that incorrectly refers to the root of my site with a https:// prefix - I will try to contact them to get them to correct this. I'm not sure however how Googlebot managed to index the non-root files as https://. I can't find any external links to them and surely, without certification, Googlebot should have stalled at the first request? I've just added the following lines to the site's .htaccess (although the surfer still has to navigate through the browser's "This site is a security risk. Abandon hope all ye who enter here!" message(s) first to get there): RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} on RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.<my site>.org/$1 [R=301,L] replacing <my site> with my domain name. My big question is this though - I would like to use the Google Webmaster Tools Remove URLs feature to remove the https:// pages from the index. Can I be guaranteed that this will only remove the https:// versions of each relevant page and not the valid http:// versions? • Automatic server redirect that passes through as the referring site

  Hey All, As always, I would like to thank all of your help and assistance in advance. I am looking for a way to automatically redirect a user to a site and maintain the redirect site as the referral site. Let me explain the process and what is needed in a step by step format. User clicks on a desired link in an email User is navigated to testdomain.com User is automatically redirected to test.com/landing test.com sees testdomain.com as the referral site Data is gathered via Google Analytics I am unsure as if this PHP code will take care of it, or not - header("Location: http://google.com", true, 303); I could test and that is most likely what I am going to do. But I would like to understand a little more as to WHY this would or WHY this wouldn't work.

• Which iptables rule do you think is a 'must have'

  I have some basic iptable rules set up now for my vps. Just block everything except some default ports, 80,21,22,443. I do get brute forced a lot. I have heard that iptables is very powerful but I have not seen many use cases. Can you give me an example of a(some) rule(s) you always use and give a small example why. I can not find a general best practice post here on SF, if there is any I would like the link. If this is a duplicate I am sorry and it can be closed.

• SVN Server not responding

  I've been bashing my head against a wall with this one all day and I would greatly appreciate a few more eyes on the problem at hand. We have an in-house SVN Server that contains all live and development code for our website. Our live server can connect to this and get updates from the repository. This was all working fine until we migrated the SVN Server from a physical machine to a vSphere VM. Now, for some reason that continues to fathom me, we can no longer connect to the SVN Server. The SVN Server runs CentOS 6.2, Apache and SVN 1.7.2. SELinux is well and trully disabled and the problem remains when iptables is stopped. Our production server does run an older version of CentOS and SVN but the same system worked previously so I don't think that this is the issue. Of note, if I have iptables enabled, using service iptables status, I can see a single packet coming in and being accepted but the production server simply hangs on any svn command. If I give up waiting and do a CTRL-C to break the process I get a "could not connect to server". To me it appears to be something to do with the SVN Server rejecting external connections but I have no idea how this would happen. Any thoughts on what I can try from here? Our IPCop (?) firewall allows connections from it (and it alone) on port 80 and passes the connection to the SVN Server. • Fun Upgrading to .Net 4.0

  We are currently in the process of upgrading one of our applications to .Net 4.0. Aside from us geeks wanting to always use latest and greatest technologies, an immediate business need for Silverlight 4.0 features justified our upgrade endeavor. The following is a summary of some issues we ran into with our web project:   For security purposes, the IIS 7 .Net 4.0 ISAPI filter is disabled. “Allow” it from the ISAPI and CGI Restrictions screen as shown:   Figure 1 - Allowing ASP.Net 4.0 ISAPI Filter   By default the Web Setup Project only requires the .Net Framework 4 Client Profile to be installed on target system, which offers a lighter weight install for client machines consuming .Net 4.0 applications. However, using certain .Net 4.0 features requires the full .Net 4.0 Framework as outlined in this link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc656912.aspx. We hence needed to update the installer to require the complete .Net 4.0 Framework on the target machine and to prompt for its installation if needed.   To accomplish this goal, we updated the installer’s launch conditions to check for .Net 4.0 as well as the installer prerequisites as shown:     Figure 2- Ensure Web Setup Project runs on full .Net 4.0 version Figure 3 - Launch Conditions screen Figure 4 - Set launch condition to .Net 4.0. • Has anyone managed to install Office Webapps on SharePoint 2010, on Windows 7 ?

  I've installed SharePoint 2010 as a development environment on my Windows 7 x64 environment (notes here) and would like to install Office Web Apps onto it also. However, when trying to install (following this link), I get an error saying that Web roles aren't installed. The error message in the log file is: Start C:\Windows\system32\ServerManagerCmd.exe -whatif -inputpath C:\Users\nickh\AppData\Local\Temp\PRE1.tmp.XML Error: Failed to start process for file: C:\Windows\system32\ServerManagerCmd.exe arguments: -whatif -inputpath C:\Users\nickh\AppData\Local\Temp\PRE1.tmp.XML ErrorCode: 2(0x2). Which is effectively saying that ServerManagerCmd is not found. It isn't on my machine as it is deprecated and replaced by Powershell functions, but is on Server 2008 R2. I've tried copying that over and it just fails to run. Is there a way to get Office WebApps installed on Win7 ? Is there a way to get a working version of ServerManagerCmd.exe on a Windows 7 x64 environment ? Many thanks

• 5 Lessons learnt in localization / multi language support in WPF

  For the last few months I have been secretly working away at the second version of an application that we initially released a few years ago. It’s called MaxCut and it is a free panel/cut optimizer for the woodwork, glass and metal industry. One of the motivations for writing MaxCut was to get an end to end experience in developing an application for general consumption. From the early days of v1 of MaxCut I would get the odd email thanking me for the software and then listing a few suggestions on how to improve it. Two of the most dominant suggestions that we received were… Support for imperial measurements (the original program only supported the metric system) Multi language support (we had someone who volunteered to translate the program into Japanese for us). I am not going to dive into the Imperial to Metric support in todays blog post, but I would like to cover a few brief lessons we learned in adding support for multi-language functionality in the software. I have sectioned them below under different lessons. Lesson 1 – Build multi-language support in from the start So the first lesson I learnt was if you know you are going to do multi language support – build it in from the very beginning! One of the power points of WPF/Silverlight is data binding in XAML and so while it wasn’t to painful to retro fit multi language support into the programing, it was still time consuming and a bit tedious to go through mounds and mounds of views and would have been a minor job to have implemented this while the form was being designed. Lesson 2 – Accommodate for varying word lengths using Grids The next lesson was a little harder to learn and was learnt a bit further down the road in the development cycle. We developed everything in English, assuming that other languages would have similar character length words for equivalent meanings… don’t!. A word that is short in your language may be of varying character lengths in other languages. Some language like Dutch and German allow for concatenation of nouns which has the potential to create really long words. We picked up a few places where our views had been structured incorrectly so that if a word was to long it would get clipped off or cut out. To get around this we began using the WPF grid extensively with column widths that would automatically expand if they needed to. Generally speaking the grid replacement got round this hurdle, and if in future you have a choice between a stack panel or a grid – think twice before going for the easier option… often the grid will be a bit more work to setup, but will be more flexible. Lesson 3 – Separate the separators Our initial run through moving the words to a resource dictionary led us to make what I thought was one potential mistake. If we had a label like the following… “length : “ In the resource dictionary we put it as a single entry. This is fine until you start using a word more than once. For instance in our scenario we used the word “length’ frequently. with different variations of the word with grammar and separators included in the resource we ended up having what I would consider a bloated dictionary. When we removed the separators from the words and put them as their own resources we saw a dramatic reduction in dictionary size… so something that looked like this… “length : “ “length. “ “length?” Was reduced to… “length” “:” “?” “.” While this may not seem like a reduction at first glance, consider that the separators “:?.” are used everywhere and suddenly you see a real reduction in bloat. Lesson 4 – Centralize the Language Dictionary This lesson was learnt at the very end of the project after we had already had a release candidate out in the wild. Because our translations would be done on a volunteer basis and remotely, we wanted it to be really simple for someone to translate our program into another language. As a common design practice we had tiered the application so that we had a business logic layer, a ui layer, etc. The problem was in several of these layers we had resource files specific for that layer. What this resulted in was us having multiple resource files that we would need to send to our translators. To add to our problems, some of the wordings were duplicated in different resource files, which would result in additional frustration from our translators as they felt they were duplicating work. Eventually the workaround was to make a separate project in VS2010 with just the language translations. We then exposed the dictionary as public within this project and made it as a reference to the other projects within the solution. This solved out problem as now we had a central dictionary and could remove any duplication's. Lesson 5 – Make a dummy translation file to test that you haven’t missed anything The final lesson learnt about multi language support in WPF was when checking if you had forgotten to translate anything in the inline code, make a test resource file with dummy data. Ideally you want the data for each word to be identical. In our instance we made one which had all the resource key values pointing to a value of test. This allowed us point the language file to our test resource file and very quickly browse through the program and see if we had missed any linking. The alternative to this approach is to have two language files and swap between the two while running the program to make sure that you haven’t missed anything, but the downside of dual language file approach is that it is much a lot harder spotting a mistake if everything is different – almost like playing Where’s Wally / Waldo. It is much easier spotting variance in uniformity – meaning when you put the “test’ keyword for everything, anything that didn’t say “test” stuck out like a sore thumb. So these are my top five lessons learnt on implementing multi language support in WPF. • What RSS Reader can handle item-updating (JIRA search) feeds?

  Thunderbird is a good rss reader in terms of being able to connect successfully to jira authenticated search feeds (where evolution-rss and Liferea can't), but really sucks when it comes to updating. A Jira search feed will give a link id to http://jira/browse/[ticket no], and if that ticket/feed-item is updated, thunderbird refuses to update it - it already has it! (even though the item date does not match). Also, if you delete the ticket update, it will never show up again for that news account. Has anybody found an RSS reader that can work with JIRA/updating RSS items? Note: this is not the same as Jira activity feeds - those work great, as each update has a unique item id To replicate: Grab a search (any search) Get it into your rss reader Read an item, modify the linked ticket Update rss and see if the ticket bumps to most recent and unread or, generically: Get an rss feed (from your hard drive?) • Museum of Modern Art Starts Video Game Collection; Acquires Myst, Pac-Man, and More

  The Museum of Modern Art is weighing in on the video-games-as-art debate by starting a collection of iconic video games and putting them up for public display. Read on to see what games are included in the initial batch and the MoMA’s reasons behind starting a video game collection. Although the MoMA is slated to grow to over 40 titles, the seed batch is 14 titles including: Pac-Man, Tetris, Sim City 2000, Myst, Portal, and Dwarf Fortress. In the announcement they explain the motivation for building a video game collection: Are video games art? They sure are, but they are also design, and a design approach is what we chose for this new foray into this universe. The games are selected as outstanding examples of interaction design—a field that MoMA has already explored and collected extensively, and one of the most important and oft-discussed expressions of contemporary design creativity. Our criteria, therefore, emphasize not only the visual quality and aesthetic experience of each game, but also the many other aspects—from the elegance of the code to the design of the player’s behavior—that pertain to interaction design. In order to develop an even stronger curatorial stance, over the past year and a half we have sought the advice of scholars, digital conservation and legal experts, historians, and critics, all of whom helped us refine not only the criteria and the wish list, but also the issues of acquisition, display, and conservation of digital artifacts that are made even more complex by the games’ interactive nature. This acquisition allows the Museum to study, preserve, and exhibit video games as part of its Architecture and Design collection. • Missing driver ASUS PCE-N53 11n N600 PCI-E Adapter

  I have problems with getting an Asus PCE-N53 11n N600 PCI-E Adapter card to work on my desktop computer. As far as I can tell no drivers are installed for the card. I know I can manually download the drivers directly from Asus, but I would rather not go that route. If there are anyone that knows about any packages or other things I can do to make this work would be much appreciated. Some systems details: $ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. • Recommendations for a web-based help system

  Hi Experts, I'm putting together a fairly large GUI. I'm a tech person, but more on the hardware side, not software. I'm wondering what software package would be best suited to enable me to generate a web-based help-system. Preferably it takes care of a lot of coding, allowing me to focus on the content. For example, the user would click on a link in the GUI when they have a question, that brings them to a web-based Help Guide, for example, providing an overview of how to use the GUI, perhaps a searchable index (key-word based index), table of contents, etc, for navigating through the Help Guide. My first thought was to program everything in XHTML using Dreamweaver, but my layout requirements are fairly modest (just figures and text, maybe a few equations), and I'd prefer not to spend a lot of time concentrating on the programming. Was wondering if any software existed that made generating web-based navigatable pages easy to create/publish. Again, I'm not really a programmer, so if there's something obvious out there, I'm probably not aware of it. Any advice much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

• Ubuntu 9.10 + LXDE Error unmet dependencies

  I am working on Ubuntu 9.10 + LXDE as my current project. I am finding it difficult to install any new packages on this OS. For example, I need to install OpenCv package for qt webcam application, but every time it gives unmet dependencies error.And when i try to install dependencies it again show some more dependencies and so on and forms a circular loops. for example: sudo apt-get install libcv-dev .. .... The following packages have unmet dependencies: libcv-dev: Depends: libhighgui-dev (=1.0.0-6.2ubuntu1) but it is not going to installed. E: Broken packages Then I try to install libhighgui-dev as follow: sudo appt-get install libhighgui-dev .. ... The following packages have unmet dependencies: libhighgui-dev: Depends: libgtk2.0-dev but it is not going to installed E: Broken packages And this goes on never ending. Please suggest me something, as i have googled a lot and did not found any help. It may be , i m missing some primary packages to be installed.But how to find it? • Motherboard max memory supported

  I have an Intel DG965RY motherboard and its specification says it supports 8GB with 533 or 667Mhz RAM sticks and only 4GB with 800Mhz RAM sticks. I am running a 64bit OS. I earlier had 2 X 1GB sticks (800Mhz), so I bought 2 X 2GB sticks (800Mhz) and I underclocked them in the settings to run at 667Mhz. Shouldn't it support all 6GB RAM now? It would be a bummer if I will specifically need 667Mhz sticks thinking that at the worst they will underclock and then run at 667Mhz. I tried this because I saw someone posted at some forum that he put in 4GB+ of RAM in the same board @ 800Mhz and the system uses it all. In my case (On Ubuntu), it only shows 3.2GB as of now (link to Question) so needed to confirm if this is a hardware limitation.

• Is there a command-line utility app which can find a specific block of lines in a text file, and replace it?

  UPDATE (see end of question) The text "search and replace" utility programs I've seen, seem to only search on a line-by-line basis... Is there a command-line tool which can locate one block of lines (in a text file), and replace it with another block of lines.? For example: Does the test file file contain this exact group of lines: 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. 'Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!' I want this, so that I can replace multiple lines of text in a file and know I'm not overwriting the wrong lines. I would never replace "The Jabberwocky" (Lewis Carroll), but it makes a novel example :) UPDATE: ..(sub-update) My following comment about reasons when not use sed are only in the context of; don't push any tool too far beyond its design intent (I use sed quite often, and consider it to be invaluable.) I just now found an interesting web page about sed and when not to use it. So, because of all the sed answers, I"ll post the link.. it is part of the sed FAQ on sourceforge Also, I'm pretty sure there is some way diff can do the job of locating the block of text (once it's located, the replacement is quite straight foward; using head and tail) ... 'diff' dumps all the necessary data, but I haven't yet worked out how to filter it , ... (I'm still working on it)

• Attempting Unauthorized operation - SQL 2008 R2 install

  I've been banging against this for a few days. Keep getting this unauthorized error when trying to install SQL 2008 R2 on a Windows 7 machine. I've changed permissions on the key, does not fix... Created an admin user, gave specific permissions on that key, does not fix... Disabled all firewalls, installed from a local admin, does not fix...   Oracle JD Edwards Enterprise One Tools Release  9.1 has many new features that will help end users be more efficient in their daily jobs. For example, hiding grid columns is now as easy as a left-mouse click. In earlier releases, users could click on the ‘Customize Grid’ link but still had to do several more clicks to hide or show a column . The following example shows how easy this new feature is to use. First, right-mouse click on the column you want to hide; for example the ‘Long Address’ column. The column is now hidden. Second, right-mouse over on any of the columns to show the ‘Unhide’ option. After you select ‘Unhide’, the hidden column is shown. You can then select the column to show, or unhide, the column. This new feature and others are covered in the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne System Administration Rel 9.x course, which has been updated to reflect the new release. • Network trials and tribulations

  Hi, I am in the process of setting up a small (two PC's, both running Windows 7) network using a D-link DI-604 router (which acts only as hub, it's not set up in any way). In the Network and 'Sharing Center' in 'Control Panel' I clicked 'Set up a New (Connection or) Network'. All went well up until the moment I attempted to connect one PC with the other (in the 'Connect' dialog I entered the other PC's IP, no pwd). I can use both PC's to connect to and browse the net though, so the router/hub does not seem to be the problem. And I must have done something right, because the other computer shows up in the 'Network Map'. Any and all help is much appreciated!

• Blank pale blue screen with Live USB Kubuntu on AMD Sempron 2800+ processor

  I am trying to install Kubuntu onto a USB stick to use on my Acer Aspire 1362 laptop with an AMD Sempron 2800+ chip. Using Windows XP, I downloaded and saved to the laptop's hard drive: kubuntu-2.04.1-desktop-i386.iso from the GetKubuntu website and LinuxLive USB Creator 2.8.16.exe from the Linux live website I then installed the latter and ran it, installing the kubuntu onto the Memory stick. Leaving the Bios setup unchanged, the USB stick is ignored and Windows boots. If I change the Bios boot order so that the memory stick takes precedence, I see a dark blue screen announcing Kubukntu 12.04, and on selecting either “live Mode” or “Persistent mode”, messages flash by quickly, some of which appear to be error messages, including “trying to unpack rootfs image as initramfs”, “cannot allocate resource for mainboard”, “no plug and play device found”. Eventually I see a pale blue screen with four moving dots announcing Kubukntu 12.04, similar to the login screen of my Kubuntu desktop, but no invitation to log in or indeed any dialog. After several minutes, this changes to a black screen with more messages including “no caching mode present”, “ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready”, then degrades to a blank pale blue screen which can only be moved by switching the computer off. Finding no way to log the error messages passing by, I managed to photograph most of them, but know no way to attach the photo to this forum. As suggested by User 68186 (to whom thanks!), I have edited my original post to reflect the recent progress, so the following two comments are now superseded.

• Making an advertising server ads from different ad networks

  In India there are many ad-networks(other than Adsense) who pay per acquisition or per lead. So Javascript ad code is not required(as fraud clicks don't matter as long as one converts). So an ad network will have many companies and each company will have many banner sizes for ads. Also suddenly any ad may be stopped just because company's target has met. Which is a common nuisance since if we don't remove those url's then that company will get conversions for free. I've a dozen sites and removing the ads are difficult every now and then. Also CPA based ads may not convert at all. That means I'll need to remove non-performing ads regularly. I've gone through: How can I show multiple ad networks on my site? . I've also visited DFP solution but without Adsense they wouldn't let me open account. I want to make an ad server wherein I'll feed new ads (banner image + link for click). I want to maintain categories there like ( shoes, phones, books etc). So if an ad is paused - i'll simply remove/pause the ad there while other ads in the category keep running. Also changing ad code within sites will no more be required. For example - let me have an ad category "clothing" where I can add ads from different companies. So if one of my site requests an ad from there it'll randomly select an ad in this category and return it to site for display. Removing/adding ads within this category will not affect the site requesting those ads. Any idea how to implement it?

• Visual Studio 2005 SP1 refuses to install in Windows 7

  I'm trying to install Visual Studio 2005 in Windows 7. When attempting to start, Windows 7 complains that VS2005 is incompatible with Windows 7 and offers me to search online for a solution. It comes up with a link to VS2005 SP1 for Vista and Windows 7, but when I download it (VS80sp1-KB932232-X86-ENU.exe) and try to run it, it refuses to install saying that The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.

• Lost contact with my NAS after changing its IP

  I did some brain-dead reconfiguring of my D-Link DNS-323 NAS some days ago. I have a home network where each computer gets a dynamically allocated IP address starting at 192.168.1.100. The irritating point (for me at least) was that the NAS changed IP if the power went down or I turned off the router. I then had to remap a drive-letter to point to the new IP address of the NAS. To remedy that I configured the NAS to have a static IP, 192.168.0.10. I had no good reason to choose that IP, other than I found it in a user manual for the NAS. After I changed the IP and rebooted the NAS it disappeared from the network and was never to be found again. Now I have a black brick standing in my home, looking good, but "dead". Could anyone point me in a direction which helps me solve this problem? I have about 100gb worth of pic of my children on this brick so I really want it back :-) Sincerely,
