• XNA 4 game for both profiles

  I am writing game in XNA 4 and this version have two profiles hi-def and reach. My problem is that I need to have my game code for each of these profiles and is very uncomfortable to have two projects and do all changes in both of them. My idea was to use preprocessor directive (i am not sure about name of this, http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ed8yd1ha%28v=vs.71%29.aspx) and use IF statement at places with problems with profile. There is only problem that program needs to be compiled two times (for each profile) and manually changed directive and project settings to another profile. And my questions are: Is that good way? Is there better and cleaner way how to do this?

  Possible Duplicate: Is it ever too old to learn how to become a programmer? I'm 30 years old going back to school for a 2nd degree in Computer Science. I will be transferring to my local state university this fall and would like to know if my age will be a factor when applying for internships. I have already read a few threads about age and careers: Is it too late to start your career as a programmer at the age of 30? Does it matter that you started developing at 26? While it is reassuring to know that people are getting entry-level programming jobs at 30+, what about internships? Should I even bother with bigger companies like Google, Microsoft, or Apple? I know we have laws against age-discrimination but lets not pretend we live in a perfect world where everyone follows the rules.

• Relayout LVM Disk

  I have an Ubuntu 11.10 system with two 500GB disks. The partition tables look like this: /dev/sda1 primary 465.52GB /dev/sda2 extended 243.17MB -> /dev/sda5 logical 243.14MB /dev/sdb1 primary 465.76GB sda1 and sdb1 are in a single LVM physical volume group containing a single logical volume containing a single logical filesystem which is mounted as /. sda5 is mounted as /boot. The problem comes when I want to upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04, which requires at least 247MB free on /boot. So I need to reduce the size of sda1 so that I can increase the size of sda2 and sda5. How the heck do I do that? I can find how to shrink the logical volume group, but I'm not at all clear on how to clear out the end part of sda1 so that I can reduce the physical volume group. Does pvresize just deal with this automagically? Or is that wild wishful thinking? I guess the alternatives are to back everything up onto something or other and recreate the thing from scratch or find out whether GRUB2 supports using LVM for /boot.

  I attended a Microsoft Office and SharePoint 2010 HOL 1 day workshop last week and wanted to setup a VM to try the new features in my own laptop. The presenter in the workshop implicitly mentioned a tool called VirtualBox (because it's not a MS product?) but I have no clue what it is at that moment. Until today, I saw a very useful blog and thanks to Guy and Rolly. • Router that allows custom Dynamic DNS server [closed]

  I've made my own DDNS service and it works fine using an application running on clients to update the IP. But if for some reason I don't have the choice of using my software and instead I need to use a router to update the IP, it becomes troublesome. For example, I needed to setup IPsec from a customer to me and the customers router/firewall (netgear srx5308) has a dynamic IP which is given from the ISP which can't offer static IPs. So it needs to use dynamic dns for it to work. In this case there really isn't a client to run the software on since it's a router/firewall. Unfortunately it seems that most routers are rather unfriendly towards custom DDNS solutions and most offer only dyndns.com or similar templates. Which was the case with this router too. Leaving me with no way to use my own dynamic dns server IP. I have the option of switching out the customers router and I've been looking around for alternatives and other routers/solutions and I was wondering if anyone on this great site might have been in a similar situation or might just know about some router/firewall that is more friendly towards custom ddns solutions that I might be able to use.   I do really hate repeater. I was more a GridView lover but after 3.5 be born, I prefer ListView.  The first problem with Repeater is paging. You will need to write code to handle paging. Second common problem is empty data template. Have a look at this:             if (rptMyRepeater.Items.Count < 1)             {                 if (e.Item.ItemType == ListItemType.Footer)                 {                     Label lblFooter = (Label)e.Item.FindControl("lblEmpty");                     lblFooter.Visible = true;                 }             }   I found the above code is usefull if you need to show something like "There is no record" is your data source has no records. Although the ListView has a template.   If you combine ListView with a DataPager, you will be in heaven as it is sorting the paging for you without writing code. • WSS Fails Installing On Step 5 Of The SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard

  I've attempted to install WSS 3.0 with SP1 several times as both stand-alone and server farm with no luck on Windows Server 2008.  When I get to step 5 of Configuration wizard it begin installing and publishing services but on Step 5 I get the message "Failed To Register Sharepoint Services". The detail behind this message reads "An exception of type Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException was thrown". Then I Run the command psconfig -cmd configdb -create -database <whatever_unique_name> Click on Start / All Programs / Administrative Tools / SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard Should work now (it did with me). PS: This was done on a Virtual Machine (VMware)

• What are the replacement options for an IDE hd for a DOS based system?

  I have got a few "embedded" systems running MSDOS 6.2 which boot from and store data to IDE hard disks. Since these drives are nearing their end of life, the question arises how we can replace them. The requirements are: DOS must be able to install and boot from these drives. They must be able to sustain heavy (mostly) write access. If possible, they should be able to survive moderate vibrations (not too bad since the current hds have survived several years of that) I considered the following options so far: other ide hard drives: Unfortunately modern IDE drives are too large so DOS cannot boot from them even if I create small partitions. Older IDE drives are just that: old, so they are probably not the most reliable ones any more. SSDs: There are a few SSDs with IDE interface available. I have not yet tried them. Does anybody have any experience with them? They look like the ideal replacement provided that DOS can boot from them and that writing speed does not deteriorate too much (the old hds are no race cars either). Compact Flash: There are adapters for using CF with IDE controllers and they work fine. DOS can boot from them and they have no problems at all with vibrations. What I am not sure about is their durability. DOS uses FAT so some very few sectors are written every time the medium is being written to. IDE to SATA converters: I have no idea whether they are any good. Has anybody tried them? It might be an option to use one of these to connect an SATA SSD to the system. Are there any alternatives that I have missed? (We are working on replacing these systems, but it will still take a few years.)

  I frequently have multiple Eclipse-based projects running simultaneously, sometimes on different versions of Eclipse. I have made a mess of a few workspaces by accidentally opening them in the wrong version of Eclipse. To thwart my own forgetfulness, I went seeking a way to launch directly to a workspace and found it at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/209789/starting-eclipse-w-specific-workspace. Essentially, add the -data switch to your icon's open command, such as: C:\eclipse\eclipse.exe -data E:\MyData\Clients\Confidential\EclipseGCDPGive it a unique name and stick it on your Start Menu (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu). Makes my life a bit easier and hopefully yours, too.

  I am trying to dual boot my acer which came with windows 8 pre-installed. I tried using the tutorial here doing it the simple way but when I load Ubuntu from my transcended flash drive it says that there is no other operating system installed. I tried partitioning my hard drive but I seem to have 3 recovery partitions and even though I have 485GB free I can only allocate 100GB to the new partition. I would like to have most of my hard drive allocated to Ubuntu and just use the windows for programs like microsoft office.

  I was recently introduced to microsoft's tool that analyzes managed code assemblies called FxCop. It points out possible design, localization, performance, and security improvements against a pre defined set of rules (and also accepts custom rules). At first I was unsure how to go about using it as it seems to be aimed at software developers (.exe and .dll) . Its easy to get around this with the following steps: 1)Create a new folder (i.e C:\Code Analysis) 2)Publish your web application into the new folder 3)Open FxCop and add all the dll files from the newly created bin folder  to be scrutinized.   For a long time when creating images for my development environment, I had to install the OS and then sysprep.  Only after that would I then create a differencing drive/image that would have SQL Server.
