• How to ensure consistency of enums in Java serialization?

  When I serialize an object, I can use the serialVersionUID mechanism at the class level to ensure the compatibility of the two types. However, what happens when I serialize fields of enum values? Is there a way to ensure that the enum type has not been manipulated between serialization and deserialization? Suppose that I have an enum like OperationResult {SUCCESS, FAIL}, and a field called "result" in an object that is being serialized. How do I ensure, when the object is deserialized, that result is still correct even if someone maliciously reversed the two? (Suppose the enum is declared elsewhere as a static enum) I am wondering out of curiosity - I use jar-level authentication to prevent manipulation.

• How to update (append to) an href in jquery?

  I have a list of links that all go to a google maps api. the links already have the daddr (destination) parameter in them as static. I am using Geo-Location to find the users position and I want to add the saddr (source address) to the links once I get the data. so basically I will need to add something like &saddr=50.1234567,-50.03452 at the tail end of all the links pointing to google maps All the links have a class called directions-link and from this page I have figured out how to change them: $("a.directions-link").attr("href", "http://www.google.com/"); However I only want to append my value to the end of the href without changing what the href already is.   I'm going to create a website using Wordpress static pages feature. It's going to have a menu for all the created pages. A blog is going to be created as well. This blog has a completely different layout/menu from the main site, but within the same domain: "http://www.domain.com" is the website url, and "http://www.domain.com/blog/" is the blog url. I was thinking of installing two different Wordpress instances: /var/www/public_html/ and /var/www/public_html/blog/. Although it's a simple solution, users are going to be duplicated: if you change password in one system, you need to change in the other. So, I would like to know from you which other approaches are possible: create a "dynamic" theme (call a theme when in root domain, another whern /blog - dont even know if this is possible), or for example a plugin to syncronize users from both instances? Does Wordpress MU solve this problem for me? Thanks!

• Caching in Ruby Gem, possibly not using Rails

  I am rewriting an existing Ruby Gem to include caching. This is for a gem that is relatively commonly used, and accesses a large amount of static data on a web service. Currently, I have a small number of gem users doing a large number of accesses to the service that under normal conditions would be swamping / downing the service, and we're going to put the gem up on github for general consumption. Right now, users can choose between using the rails cache mechanism, a simple disk cache, or no cache. What is best practice for letting people choose what cache to use like this (being able to use this outside of rails is a priority so i can't just bail to the underlying caching mechanism)? I'm looking for suggestions/examples for configuration and interface, especially. Thanks for your suggestions

Does anybody see the problem?

• Caching Models in rails

  I have a rails application, with a model that is a kind of repository. The records stored in the DB for that model are (almost) never changed, but are read all the time. Also there is not a lot of them. I would like to store these records in cache, in a generic way. I would like to do something like acts_as_cached, but here are the issue I have: I can not find a decent documentation for acts as cached (neither can I find it's repository) I don't want to use memcached, but something simpler (static variable, or something like that). Do you have any idea of what gems I could use to do that ? Thanks

• jquery scroll to a px count from top and then set a div to be fixed from the top for the rest of the scroll

  I am looking to change a div's css when i scroll to a certain point down the page, a certain amount of pixels from the top of the page. On page load i would have a div positioned statically. Once I started to scroll down the page and i hit a point from the top (say 100px for demo purposes) i want to change that static div to become fixed like 20px from the top. Which would be done via the css() property of jquery. THis would allow it to stay at that fixed 20px all the way down the page. What jquery property can i use to know when i hit that 100px mark. I want this to also revert once someone gets back to the top so that the div is put back to where it was when the page loaded and not 20px from the top. Any ideas?

I believe so but i would like to have a better understanding of the internal process, from the man page you can clearly see a small workflow sequence: -jar Execute a program encapsulated in a JAR file. The first argument is the name of a JAR file instead of a startup class name. In order for this option to work, the manifest of the JAR file must contain a line of the form Main-Class: classname. Here, classname identifies the class having the public static void main(String[] args) method that serves as your application's starting point. • Is there a tool that will show diagrams of my SQL database in real-time?

  I've created some diagrams of SQL tables using the "Reverse Engineer" feature of Microsoft Office Visio. I like being able to visualize my relational databases in this manner. However, what I get is just a static document that I can print, e-mail to colleagues, and click widgets on. Earlier this year, I saw at a demo that the new version of Visual Studio 2010 has a new feature called the "Architect Explorer", which allows developers to view relationships among .net classes on the fly. It has many features for filtering the data that the developer is interested in. It would be really awesome if I could visually browse my tables and stored procedures and see what is related to what by primary key, foreign key, and referenced in stored procedures. I realize that I'm talking about two entirely different technologies and it's not a perfect analogy, but is there some similar tool that would allow me to visualize tables in my SQL database?

  Recently search engines have been able to page dynamic content on social networking sites. I would like to understand how this is done. Are there static pages created by a site like Facebook that update semi frequently. Does Google attempt to store every possible user name? As I understand it, a page like www.facebook.com/username, is not an actual file stored on disk but is shorthand for a query like: select username from users and display the information on the page. How does Google know about every user, this gets even more complicated when things like tweets are involved.

  I have a database of software tools and I want to be able to have users rate and comment on the tools, and view the ratings and comments that other users have left. To lower the risk of spammers attacking the site, I would like to be able to restrict comment/rating permissions to those who are logged in. At present, the tools are in a list on a static html page as part of a website that is very "non-interactive"; other than the contact form, there is nowhere that users contribute content to the site. We maintain a wiki (of the standard mediawiki flavour) that users can contribute to, and we also have a Drupal installation as a news site. Does anyone have any experience of creating such a rating/commenting system, and whether it would be better to use Mediawiki or Drupal (or another free CMS?), or to try to create something myself? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

  Hello, I found the discussion on Do you test private method informative. I have decided, that in some classes, I want to have protected methods, but test them. Some of these methods are static and short. Because most of the public methods make use of them, I will probably be able to safely remove the tests later. But for starting with a TDD approach and avoid debugging, I really want to test them. I thought of the following: Method Object as adviced in an answer seems to be overkill for this. Start with public methods and when code coverage is given by higher level tests, turn them protected and remove the tests. Inherit a class with a testable interface making protected methods public Which is best practice? Is there anything else? It seems, that JUnit automatically changes protected methods to be public, but I did not have a deeper look at it. PHP does not allow this via reflection.

I am using routes to determine localization. ie: if the url has es or fr in the route it will load either spanish or french resources. for example: www.someroute/es/checkstuff/checkstuff.aspx will load: www.someroute/checkstuff/checkstuff.aspx with the spanish resources. I am configuring the custom routes in global.asax via: protected void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) { RegisterRoutes(RouteTable.Routes); } public static void RegisterRoutes(RouteCollection routes) { foreach (var value in _customRoutes) { routes.Add(value.RouteName, new Route(value.Route, new CustomRouteHandler(value.ResolvedRoute))); } } where _customroutes is a list of routes. Is there a way to do this with some kind of pattern matching so I can avoid adding a specific route for each page in the application. While I know I could use a t4 template to generate the routes, I guess I am looking for a dynamic way to create the list
