  • Sockets server design advice

    - by Rob
We are writing a socket server in c# and need some advice on the design. Background: Clients (from mobile devices) connect to our server app and we leave their socket open so we can send data back down to them whenever we need to. The amount of data varies but we generally send/receive data from each client every few seconds, so it's quite intensive. The amount of simultaneous connections can range from 50-500 (and more in the future). We have already written a server app using async sockets and it works, however we've come across some stumbling blocks and we need to make sure that what we're doing is correct. We have a collection which holds our client states (we have no socket/connection pool at the moment, should we?). Each time a client connects we create a socket and then wait for them to send us some data and in receiveCallBack we add their clientstate object to our connections dictionary (once we have verified who they are). When a client object then signs off we shutdown their socket and then close it as well as remove them from our collection of clients dictionary. Presumably everything happens in the right order, everything works as expected. However, almost everyday it stops accepting connections, or so we think, either that or it connects but doesn't actually do anything past that and we can't work out why it's just stopping. There are few things that we'r'e unsure about 1) Should we be creating some kind of connection pool as opposed to just a dictionary of client sockets 2) What happens to the sockets that connect but then don't get added to our dictionary, they just linger around in memory doing nothing, should we create ANOTHER dictionary that holds the sockets as soon as they are created? 3) What's the best way of finding if clients are no longer connected? We've read some many methods but we're not sure of the best one to use, send data or read data, if so how? 4) If we loop through the connections dictonary to check for disposed clients, should we be locking the dictionary, if so how does this affect other clients objects trying to use it at the same time, will it throw an error or just wait? 5) We often get disposedSocketException within ReceiveCallBack method at random times, does this mean we are safe to remove that socket from the collection? We can't seem to find any production type examples which show any of this working. Any advice would be greatly received

  • Simultaneous gesture recognizers in Iphone SDK

    - by minaevs
I need to catch two different swipping gestures using UISwipeGestureRecognizer(for example, UISwipeGestureRecognizerDirectionRight and UISwipeGestureRecognizerDirectionLeft). When I add two different recognisers with addGestureRecognizer method, only last added recognizer works. I've read that I need to implement gestureRecognizer:shouldRecognizeSimultaneouslyWithGestureRecognizer: method of UIGestureRecognizerDelegate protocol, but nothing works. Can anyone help with simple example of catching two or more same gestures? Thanks!

  • Haars Cascade for Actionscript development

    - by Andre
Hi guys, I have an object that I want to be able to recognize in AS3. There's a port of OpenCV for AS3 already, that works with Haars cascades, so now I need to create a cascade of my object. From what I've read, I'll have to create an XML of several images (positive and negative), but I can't find a program that'll do that for Mac OS X. Is there anything I can use that'll generate that XML on Mac OS X? Cheers, Andre

  • Multiple NSOperationQueues?

    - by Infinity
Hello! I would like to use NSOperations in my application to resolve threading problems. I have read some tutorials and now I know what I have to do, but I have a problem. There is a must to have the same NSOperationQueue in each class. What if I use a new NSOperationQueue in each class. There will be concurrency problems?

  • objective-c uncompress/inflate a NSData object which contains a gzipped string

    - by user141146
    Hi, I'm using objective-c (iPhone) to read a sqlite table that contains blob data. The blob data is actually a gzipped string. The blob data is read into memory as an NSData object I then use a method (gzipInflate) which I grabbed from here (http://www.cocoadev.com/index.pl?NSDataCategory) -- see method below. However, the gzipInflate method is returning nil. If I step through the gzipInflate method, I can see that the status returned near the bottom of the method is -3, which I assume is some type of error (Z_STREAM_END = 1 and Z_OK = 0, but I don't know precisely what a status of -3 is). Consequently, the function returns nil even though the input NSData is 841 bytes in length. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong? Is there something wrong with the method? Something wrong with how I'm using the method? Any thoughts on how to test this? Thanks for any help! - (NSData *)gzipInflate { // NSData *compressed_data = [self.description dataUsingEncoding: NSUTF16StringEncoding]; NSData *compressed_data = self.description; if ([compressed_data length] == 0) return compressed_data; unsigned full_length = [compressed_data length]; unsigned half_length = [compressed_data length] / 2; NSMutableData *decompressed = [NSMutableData dataWithLength: full_length + half_length]; BOOL done = NO; int status; z_stream strm; strm.next_in = (Bytef *)[compressed_data bytes]; strm.avail_in = [compressed_data length]; strm.total_out = 0; strm.zalloc = Z_NULL; strm.zfree = Z_NULL; if (inflateInit2(&strm, (15+32)) != Z_OK) return nil; while (!done) { // Make sure we have enough room and reset the lengths. if (strm.total_out >= [decompressed length]) [decompressed increaseLengthBy: half_length]; strm.next_out = [decompressed mutableBytes] + strm.total_out; strm.avail_out = [decompressed length] - strm.total_out; // Inflate another chunk. status = inflate (&strm, Z_SYNC_FLUSH); NSLog(@"zstreamend = %d", Z_STREAM_END); if (status == Z_STREAM_END) done = YES; else if (status != Z_OK) break; //status here actually is -3 } if (inflateEnd (&strm) != Z_OK) return nil; // Set real length. if (done) { [decompressed setLength: strm.total_out]; return [NSData dataWithData: decompressed]; } else return nil; }

  • libevent buffered events and half-closed sockets

    - by Vi
It is simple to implement a port mapper using bufferevent_* functions of libevent. However, the documentation states that "This file descriptor is not allowed to be a pipe(2)". Will libevent work correctly if I shutdown the socket in one direction shutdown(socket, SHUT_WR);? I expect it to discard remaining data in the buffer and not write there anymore, but continue reading from socket and calling a read handler.

  • Where do you use generators feature in your python code?

    - by systempuntoout
I have studied generators feature and i think i got it but i would like to understand where i could apply it in my code. I have in mind the following example i read in "Python essential reference" book: # tail -f def tail(f): f.seek(0,2) while True: line = f.readline() if not line: time.sleep(0.1) continue yield line Do you have any other effective example where generators are the best tool for the job like tail -f? How often do you use generators feature and in which kind of functionality\part of program do you usually apply it?

  • Retrieving Encrypted Rich Text file and showing it in a RichTextBox C#

    - by Ranhiru
OK, my need here is to save whatever typed in the rich text box to a file, encrypted, and also retrieve the text from the file again and show it back on the rich textbox. Here is my save code. private void cmdSave_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { FileStream fs = new FileStream(filePath, FileMode.Create, FileAccess.Write); AesCryptoServiceProvider aes = new AesCryptoServiceProvider(); aes.GenerateIV(); aes.GenerateKey(); aes.Mode = CipherMode.CBC; TextWriter twKey = new StreamWriter("key"); twKey.Write(ASCIIEncoding.ASCII.GetString(aes.Key)); twKey.Close(); TextWriter twIV = new StreamWriter("IV"); twIV.Write(ASCIIEncoding.ASCII.GetString(aes.IV)); twIV.Close(); ICryptoTransform aesEncrypt = aes.CreateEncryptor(); CryptoStream cryptoStream = new CryptoStream(fs, aesEncrypt, CryptoStreamMode.Write); richTextBox1.SaveFile(cryptoStream, RichTextBoxStreamType.RichText); } I know the security consequences of saving the key and iv in a file but this just for testing :) Well, the saving part works fine which means no exceptions... The file is created in filePath and the key and IV files are created fine too... OK now for retrieving part where I am stuck :S private void cmdOpen_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { OpenFileDialog openFile = new OpenFileDialog(); openFile.ShowDialog(); FileStream openRTF = new FileStream(openFile.FileName, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read); AesCryptoServiceProvider aes = new AesCryptoServiceProvider(); TextReader trKey = new StreamReader("key"); byte[] AesKey = ASCIIEncoding.ASCII.GetBytes(trKey.ReadLine()); TextReader trIV = new StreamReader("IV"); byte[] AesIV = ASCIIEncoding.ASCII.GetBytes(trIV.ReadLine()); aes.Key = AesKey; aes.IV = AesIV; ICryptoTransform aesDecrypt = aes.CreateDecryptor(); CryptoStream cryptoStream = new CryptoStream(openRTF, aesDecrypt, CryptoStreamMode.Read); StreamReader fx = new StreamReader(cryptoStream); richTextBox1.Rtf = fx.ReadToEnd(); //richTextBox1.LoadFile(fx.BaseStream, RichTextBoxStreamType.RichText); } But the richTextBox1.Rtf = fx.ReadToEnd(); throws an cryptographic exception "Padding is invalid and cannot be removed." while richTextBox1.LoadFile(fx.BaseStream, RichTextBoxStreamType.RichText); throws an NotSupportedException "Stream does not support seeking." Any suggestions on what i can do to load the data from the encrypted file and show it in the rich text box?

  • Why doesn't genstrings convert NSLocalizedStringFromTable entries to table.strings?

    - by juan tendero
In my source code I have some lines like NSLocalizedStringFromTable(@"Info", @"en", @"Title of this view"). When I subsequently call genstrings -o en.lproj ./Classes/*.m I would not get the expected file en.strings but Localized.strings, although I've read in the genstrings-manpage that it would generate a table.strings file from NSLocalizedStringFromTable(a, table, c) function. Am I wrong? How would I create a table.strings file then?

  • Deferred execution and eager evaluation

    - by babu M
Hi Could you please give me an example for Deferred execution with eager evaluation in C#? I read from MSDN that deferred execution in LINQ can be implemented either with lazy or eager evaluation...i could find examples in the internet for Deferred execution with lazy evaluation ,however i could not find any example for Deferred execution with eager evaluation....please help me....its urgent... Moreover, how deferred execution differs from lazy evaluation? In my point of view, both are looking same.Could you please provide any example for this too?

  • Volume Control in android application

    - by rantravee
Hi, I'd like to know how to control my application's volume from the volume keys ( contrary to my belief , I've read they control only the ringer volume). Should I overwrite the onKey Down/Up ? , or is there other way to accomplish this ? . I'm asking because if I overwrite the upper mentioned function for an activity, then the functions will receive the event only if a view associated with the this activity has the focus, and I looking for something "Globaly" ( to work no matter what activity is running now)

  • Showing labels in BibTex [LaTeX]

    - by Shahin
Hi, I'm currently using the apalike style for my bibliography, using natbib for author-year, however when I generate the bibliography I lose the labels that normally precede the reference, i.e. [S. Rostami, 2010] Shahin Rostami (2010) http://stackoverflow.com/questions/ask etc etc.. I read apalike.bst and it seems this is intended, my quesiton is, how do I get them back? Something I can include in the preamble? Otherwise is there a similar style that shows labels?

  • how can I run the apple Storekit in the simulator?

    - by software evolved
Normally, this can't be done. I have written a class which wraps around the usual Storekit functionality and will allow an app to behave (while running on the simulator) as if the Storekit transaction had succeeded. I have written a blog post about the design decisions behind the code, which can be read here and includes a download link: http://code-evolution.blogspot.com/2010/05/evolved-code-example-1-simplestore-for.html Or you can just grab the sample project from this location: simplestoreevolved.googlecode.com/files/SimpleStoreEvolved.zip Enjoy T.

  • is (StringComparison.)Ordinal the same as InvariantCulture for testing equality?

    - by Tim Lovell-Smith
From what I read so far, it sounds like these StringComparison types are meant to differ in how they do sorting of strings, if so, does that mean that it does'nt matter which StringComparison you use when doing an equality comparison? string.Equals(a, b, StringComparison....) Extra credit: does it make a difference to the answer if we compare OrdinalIgnoreCase and InvariantCultureIgnoreCase? What is the answer then? Please provide supporting argument and/or references.

  • Should an event-sourced aggregate root have query access to the event sourcing repository?

    - by JD Courtoy
I'm working on an event-sourced CQRS implementation, using DDD in the application / domain layer. I have an object model that looks like this: public class Person : AggregateRootBase { private Guid? _bookingId; public Person(Identification identification) { Apply(new PersonCreatedEvent(identification)); } public Booking CreateBooking() { // Enforce Person invariants var booking = new Booking(); Apply(new PersonBookedEvent(booking.Id)); return booking; } public void Release() { // Enforce Person invariants // Should we load the booking here from the aggregate repository? // We need to ensure that booking is released as well. var booking = BookingRepository.Load(_bookingId); booking.Release(); Apply(new PersonReleasedEvent(_bookingId)); } [EventHandler] public void Handle(PersonBookedEvent @event) { _bookingId = @event.BookingId; } [EventHandler] public void Handle(PersonReleasedEvent @event) { _bookingId = null; } } public class Booking : AggregateRootBase { private DateTime _bookingDate; private DateTime? _releaseDate; public Booking() { //Enforce invariants Apply(new BookingCreatedEvent()); } public void Release() { //Enforce invariants Apply(new BookingReleasedEvent()); } [EventHandler] public void Handle(BookingCreatedEvent @event) { _bookingDate = SystemTime.Now(); } [EventHandler] public void Handle(BookingReleasedEvent @event) { _releaseDate = SystemTime.Now(); } // Some other business activities unrelated to a person } With my understanding of DDD so far, both Person and Booking are seperate aggregate roots for two reasons: There are times when business components will pull Booking objects separately from the database. (ie, a person that has been released has a previous booking modified due to incorrect information). There should not be locking contention between Person and Booking whenever a Booking needs to be updated. One other business requirement is that a Booking can never occur for a Person more than once at a time. Due to this, I'm concerned about querying the query database on the read side as there could potentially be some inconsistency there (due to using CQRS and having an eventually consistent read database). Should the aggregate roots be allowed to query the event-sourced backing store for objects (lazy-loading them as needed)? Are there any other avenues of implementation that would make more sense?

  • "Push" linq vs reactive framework

    - by Benjol
(Once again exposing the depths of my ignorance here by combining two concepts which I haven't grokked) I read here about the Reactive framework being a 'Push' model compared to Linq's 'Pull' model. This reminded me of reading an article about 'Push' Linq. Is there really any similarity between these two 'frameworks'? UPDATE Since I asked this question, Jon Skeet has asked it too, here are his first and second impressions.
