• Introducing Programming To a Mathematician

  I currently am a programmer, I'm almost 16 years of age and have pretty much narrowed my careers down to something involving a Computer Science degree or Electrical Engineering degree (I know they are quite different but this question is about my friend) but my friend isn't so sure. He is very interested in maths and is very good at it and I think he would enjoy programming but he isn't willing to try it (edit he is willing to try but has never done before). Can anyone give me an suggestions for a language or tool that he could dabble in programming (at a reasonably basic level I assume) to solve maths problems or involve some kind of maths. As I say he enjoys maths a lot but I think he would enjoy programming, the problem is I don't want him to be put off by the stuff that isn't relevant at introductory levels such as memory allocation et al. I know that is very important but the point is that I want him to learn a bit of programming with maths then hopefully if he is interested enough he can start learning programming as programming. Thanks in advance, ell. Edit: Its not that he's completely uninterested - more that he hasn't actively explored the area before, maybe because he isn't informed about it. I wouldn't want to force him to do something he doesn't want to, I see this as more of a little push so that he can learn about programming. If he doesn't like it - fair enough, I can't control that and don't want to but if he turns out to enjoy it - this push will have been the right thing.

• SSIS Dashboard v0.4

  Following the post on SSISDB script on Gist, I’ve been working on a HTML5 SSIS Dashboard, in order to have a nice looking, user friendly and, most of all, useful, SSIS Dashboard. Since this is a “spare-time” project, I’ve decided to develop it using Python since it’s THE data language (R aside), it’s a beautiful & powerful, well established and well documented and with a rich ecosystem around. Plus it has full support in Visual Studio, through the amazing Python Tools For Visual Studio plugin, I decided also to use Flask, a very good micro-framework to create websites, and use the SB Admin 2.0 Bootstrap admin template, since I’m all but a Web Designer. The result is here: https://github.com/yorek/ssis-dashboard and I can say I’m pretty satisfied with the work done so far (I’ve worked on it for probably less than 24 hours). Though there’s some features I’d like to add in t future (historical execution time, some charts, connection with AzureML to do prediction on expected execution times) it’s already usable. Of course I’ve tested it only on my development machine, so check twice before putting it in production but, give the fact that, virtually, there is not installation needed (you only need to install Python), and that all queries are based on standard SSISDB objects, I expect no big problems. If you want to test, contribute and/or give feedback please fell free to do it…I would really love to see this little project become a community project! Enjoy!

  Here is the very interesting error I received from a reader. He has very interesting question. He attempted to use BIT filed in the SUM aggregation function and he got following error. He went ahead with various different datatype (i.e. INT, TINYINT etc) and he was able to do the SUM but with BIT he faced the problem. Error Received: Msg 8117, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Operand data type bit is invalid for sum operator. • Game works on netbeans but not outside netbeans in jar file?

  I am creating a basic game of 'Pong'. I have finished the game apart from a few glitches I need to remove. The game runs perfectly in netbeans but if I create a jar file errors come up causing it to not work. I am quite new to java but I believe it is something to do with my code looking for the images but the images have not been loaded up yet. Here is the error. How can I get this to work outside of netbeans in a jar file? • How atomic is a SELECT INTO?

  Last week I got an interesting situation that prompted me to challenge a long standing assumption. I always thought that a SELECT INTO was an atomic statement, i.e. it would either complete successfully or the table would not be created. So I got very surprised when, after a “select into” query was chosen as a deadlock victim, the next execution (as the app would handle the deadlock and retry) would fail with: Msg 2714, Level 16, State 6, Line 1 There is already an object named '#test' in the database. The only hypothesis we could come up was that the “create table” part of the statement was committed independently from the actual “insert”. We can confirm that by capturing the “Transaction Log” event on Profiler (filtering by SPID0). The result is that when we run: SELECT * INTO #results FROM master.sys.objects we get the following output on Profiler: It is easy to see the two independent transactions. Although this behaviour was a surprise to me, it is very easy to workaround it if you feel the need (as we did in this case). You can either change it into independent “CREATE TABLE / INSERT SELECT” or you can enclose the SELECT INTO in an explicit transaction: SET XACT_ABORT ON BEGIN TRANSACTION SELECT * INTO #results FROM master.sys.objects COMMIT

• Best way to use GIT to maintain web application template

  I am a sole developer and I have a web application template that I have created in Visual Studio. I am using GIT for source control, but only on my development machine. Presently I have a master and I create branches for new features, merging them back in to the master as I complete the features. I am at a point now where I am ready to use the template for deployments, and of course I want to continue adding new features via branching/merging. My question is: what would be the typical/recommended way for me to create application deployments based on the master? Should I clone the repository into a new directory that is for a particular web application? Or should I also use branching to do project development based on the main project? The projects would never be merged back into the master. However, it would be nice if I could merge future features into the master and have the ability to incorporate them into previously completed projects if desired. For more specific details of my environment: I am using TortoiseGIT in Windows 7, Visual Studio 2012, ASP.NET Web Pages. Obviously the main differences between deployments would simply be differing pages, CSS files and jQuery scripts. I found this post as I was writing this one. In order to do this should I clone the master repository and checkout from it?

• Very slow write access to SSD disks on some Asus P8Z77 motherboards

  I have Asus P8Z77-V LK motherboard, that ran Mint 13 (based on Ubuntu 12.04) just perfectly, but recently I've tried to install Mint 17 and noticed abysmal write performance. Write speed on SSD disk was about 1.5MB/sec, when it's supposed to be in 150-250MB/sec range. For write testing I've used dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=10M count=10 while booted up from LiveCD. I have also tested the read speed with hdparm -tT /dev/sda and got about 440MB/sec -- that's normal. I can tell, the read performance has not degraded at all and is not an issue here. Since I had a few different SSD disks and few motherboards, I've tested and tested and here are results: Asus P8H77 works fine with Mint13, has very slow write speed starting from Mint14. Asus P8Z77-V LK works with Mint13, has very slow write speed starting from Mint14. Asus P8Z77-V PRO works with Mint13, and works just fine with Mint14, 15, 16 and 17. The only difference between "PRO" version and others is that it has extra SATA controller onboard (in addition to the Z77 chipset SATA controller) providing extra 2 SATA ports. SSD disks work fine with "PRO" version when connected to the native SATA ports as well as to the ports provided by extra SATA controller, so this does not look like a hardware issue. As far as I can tell, there's something changed in the kernel while going from 3.2 to 3.5, that affects the detection of onboard SATA controller for Asus P8*77 motherboards, that screws up the write speed for SSD drives. Could anyone shed some light on how to fix this issue or, possibly, give a pointer to a more suitable place to ask this question?

  I had this random display issue ever since Ubuntu 11.04 and now running Ubuntu 11.10 and this problem still persist. It is very hard for me to explain, so I uploaded a video to elaborate itself. Before I convert from Windows 7, this issue never happened. The symptom is so random that I cannot reproduce or tell precisely when will this happen again. My wild guess is, should this be related to driver? • Setup for mounting kerberized nfs home directory - gssd not finding valid kerberos ticket

  Our home directories are exported via kerberized nfs, so the user needs a valid kerberos ticket to be able to mount its home. This setup works fine with our existing clients & server. Now we want to add some 11.10 client and thus set up ldap & kerberos together with pam_mount. The ldap authentication works and users can login via ssh, however their homes can not be mounted. When pam_mount is configured to mount as root, gssd does not find a valid kerberos ticket and the mount fails.   WARNING Retrying Bulk Insert for file:sqlldr due to Communication Error:256 I am running my engine on Linux and am receiving an intermittent message "WARNING Retrying bulk insert for file: sqlldr due to communication Error: 256" The engine seems to have completed successfully, but it is not clear if this error caused some of the forecast to not complete. It is also not clear what caused the error. Generally if you see only the WARNING of it, it means that next retries of the same load request have eventually succeeded and so the run a a whole is not affected. In order to know more about what happens, look for .log/.bad files left in the engines bin directory or possibly a quote of them within the specific engine log that had the issue.  The sqlnet.log file may also have some information about it and perhaps at the database server side there may be some log/alert regarding what happened.  Look at the alert.log. In general it could be that the database server/network was over loaded at the time and somehow the connection was rejected/failed/aborted either due to specific setting on concurrent connections/sessions or inadvertently due to glitch in network/os/hardware. If this repeats and becomes more frequent during the run you should look further into it as mentioned above. You can also track this using either SQL*Trace or java.util.logging.  - Globally enable logging by setting the oracle.jdbc.Trace system property java -Doracle.jdbc.Trace=true - Client Side Tracing: Your SQLNET.ORA file should contain the following lines to produce a client side trace file: trace_level_client = 10 trace_unique_client = on trace_file_client = sqlnet.trc trace_directory_client = <path_to_trace_dir> Server Side Tracing: To enable server side tracing, use the following parameters: trace_level_server = 10 trace_file_server = server.trc trace_directory_server = <path_to_trace_dir> Tracing Levels: The following values can be used for TRACE_LEVEL* parameters:     16 or SUPPORT — WorldWide Customer Support trace information     10 or ADMIN — Administration trace information     4 or USER — User trace information     0 or OFF — no tracing, the default Additional information is readily available via the web.

• Running ASP.Net MVC3 Alongside ASP.Net WebForms in the Same Project

  I previously blogged on running ASP.Net MVC in an ASP.Net WebForms project. My reference at the time was a freely-available PDF document by Scott Guthrie which covered the setup process in good detail.   As I am preparing references to share with our audience at my upcoming talk at the Deerfield Beach Coders Café on March 1st (http://www.fladotnet.com/Reg.aspx?EventID=514), I found a nice blog post by Scott Hanselman on running both ASP.Net 4.0 WebForms along with ASP.Net MVC 3.0 in the same project. You can access this article here.   Moreover, Scott later followed-up with a blog showing how to leverage NuGet to automate the setup of ASP.Net MVC3 in an existing ASP.Net WebForms project.   One frequent question that usually comes up when discussing this side-by-side setup is the loss of the convenient Visual Studio Solution Explorer context menu which enable us to easily create controllers and views with a few mouse clicks.   A good suggestion brought up in the comments section of Scott’s article presented a good work-around to this problem: Manually add the MVC Visual Studio Project Type GUID in your .sln solution file ({E53F8FEA-EAE0-44A6-8774-FFD645390401}) which then brings back the MVC-specific context menu functionality in solution explorer of the hybrid project.   When attempting to draw a line in 3D space with D3DPT_LINELIST, then Direct3D gives me an error about an invalid vertex declaration, saying that it cannot be converted to an FVF.   Video in VLC or SMplayer is often in black and white with washed-out colors in the wrong place (translated considerably). Moreover, the last video image is often visible when a new video is started and persist as long as the new video is running. Colors have a recognizable shape (e.g. a persons clothes or face), but can be obviously incorrect (e.g. green or purples faces). This is independent of the format of the videos (mp4, mkv, wmv). Sometimes all problems disappear when a new video is started, but often only a reboot restores normal video. Ubuntu was upgraded to 14.04 and is fully updated. • How do I get a rt2800usb wireless device working?

  My brand new desktop running 13.04 has endless problems with wireless. Dozens of others are flooding forums with reports of the same problems. It worked fine for a few days, then there were a few days where it started having problems sometimes and working sometimes. Now it never works at all. I have 5+ devices all able to connect without any trouble at all, including iPhone, Android phone, 3DS, multiple game consoles, a laptop running windows 7, and even a second desktop machine running Ubuntu 12.04 sitting right behind the 13.04 machine. All other devices have full wireless bars displayed (strong signals). At any moment, one of the following is happening, and it changes randomly: Trying to connect forever, but never establishing a connection. Wireless icon constantly animating. Finds no wireless networks at all. (There are 12+ in range according to other devices.) Will not try to connect to the network. If I use the icon to connect, it will display "Disconnected" within a few seconds. Will continuously ask for the network password. Typing it in correctly does not help. Wireless is working fine. This happens sometimes. It can work for days at a time, or only 10 mins at a time. Various things that usually do nothing but sometimes fix the problem: Reboot. This has the best chance of helping, but it usually takes 5+ times. Disable/re-enable Wi-Fi using the wireless icon. Disable/re-enable Networking using the wireless icon. Use the icon to try and connect to a network (if found). Use the icon to open Edit Connections and delete my connection info, causing it to be recreated (once it's actually found again). Various things that seem to make no difference: Changing between using Linux headers in grub at bootup, between 3.10.0, 3.9.0, or 3.8.0. Move the wireless router very close to the desktop. Running sudo rfkill unblock all (I dunno what this is supposed to do.) I've used Ubuntu for 6 years and I've never had a problem with networking. Now I'm spending all my time reading through endless problem reports and trying all the answers. None of them have helped. I am doing this instead of getting work done, which is defeating the whole purpose of using Ubuntu. It's heartbreaking to be honest. It said to install gksu. I tried that, but of course, not having Internet, I didn't get the package. So instead I did: sudo gedit /etc/pm/power.d/wireless Which created the file. Here is the body: #!/bin/sh /sbin/iwconfig wlan0 power off I then rebooted. No change. I tried adding exit 0 to the bottom of the wireless file, and rebooted. No change. Please note that this is a desktop machine. I'm assuming power management is primarily for laptops, but the iwconfig does state that power management is on, so who knows. The recommended router changes I did not do, since the current router settings are (I think) required for some of the older devices I have, and because the current settings work on all my modern devices including Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7. I do appreciate the advice though, and I'll look into it when I have time. Anything else to try? Update #2 I booted into Ubuntu 12.04.3 from a dvd, and the same problems exist. I have a separate old desktop machine with 12.04 installed that has no wireless problems at all. So obviously the problem is wireless hardware compatibility in both 12.04.03 LTS and 13.04. Update #3 The same problems exist even when using a wired connection. I plugged an ethernet cable directly to the router and the network manager added an "Auto Ethernet" entry, but it cannot establish a connection to it. So the problem is not specific to wireless. Meanwhile, I purchased a Trendnet N300 wireless USB adapter, TEW-664UB. I plugged it in, but I have no idea how to get Ubuntu to try and use it. Can anyone tell me how? Can I download a package on another computer and copy the .deb over to do an install, etc? I'm installing windows 7 to double check that the internet connection works there and it's not just some magically faulty hardware. Thanks for your help.
