• Why is my Asus P5PL2-E using 640MB of RAM (out of 4GB) ? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Windows XP and RAM 3.5GB+ I've recently installed 4GB of RAM on my server, which is running Windows XP SP2 32-bit and My Computer showed that only 3.37GB were installed. After digging Google for a bit, I couldn't find anything helpful, but I do remember reading a post in a forum regarding the motherboard using 640MB of RAM. Digging in my own BIOS, I've also found that my motherboard has also reserved that amount for its self. Why does my motherboard reserve this memory and how can I tune it down to say 128MB?

• Changing the RSS and Dynamic Views layout when using Blogger as a Podcast index

  I'm trying to set up a podcast service at present. This is just a 'spare time' task - so I wanted a quick, easy way to do it. To get this working: I've ripped (with owner permission) some YouTube content across to MP3 and hosted this content on Azure Blob Storage. I've posted blog posts - with linked mp3 content - inside a Blogger website. I've registered the RSS feed with iTunes This all seems to be working OK - http://dotnetmobilepodcast.blogspot.co.uk/ However, when it comes to a couple of final touches, then I'm hitting problems. RSS I would like to add iTunes metadata to the RSS feed. However, I can't find any way to do this inside the Blogger system. To workaround this I've tried using FeedBurner with its StreamCast plugin. However, the output from FeedBurner doesn't seem to be accepted by iTunes - e.g. http://feeds.feedburner.com/MobileAppCSharpPodcasts leads to this very unhelpful 11111 message: Is there any other way I can get this iTunes metadata content into the Blogger RSS feed - e.g. maybe an alternative service or a Yahoo! Pipe? Showing the MP3 files in the Blog I'm trying to work out how to automatically display the linked enclosures inside the blog posts - do the blogger Dynamic Views don't seem to have any way of doing this? I've found the HTML in those views very difficult to follow. If necessary I can workaround this using manual entries into each blog post... but I'd prefer to do this programatically if I can.

• How to determine most stable Cisco IOS release?

  This post is about a Catalyst 4948E switch. I was looking on the download page and realized that there are no "GD" versions available. Are the "ED" versions stable? Even if you change "ED" to "GD" in the URL the IOS images are still the same. http://www.cisco.com/cisco/software/release.html?mdfid=283027810&flowid=3592&softwareid=280805680&release=15.1.1-SG2&relind=AVAILABLE&rellifecycle=ED&reltype=latest Is 15.1 as reliable as 15.0? My devices are currently on the 12.2 train. Is there anything special to upgrade to one of the 15.x trains? Are the configurations compatible.

• Object pools for efficient resource management

  How can I avoid using default new() to create each object? My previous demo had very unpleasant framerate hiccups during dynamic memory allocations (usually, when arrays are resized), and creating lots of small objects which often contain one pointer to some DirectX resource seems like an awful lot of waste. I'm thinking about: Creating a master look-up table to refer to objects by handles (for safety & ease of serialization), much like EntityList in source engine Creating a templated object pool, which will store items contiguously (more cache-friendly, fast iteration, etc.) and the stored elements will be accessed (by external systems) via the global lookup table. The object pool will use the swap-with-last trick for fast removal (it will invoke the object's ~destructor first) and will update the corresponding indices in the global table accordingly (when growing/shrinking/moving elements). The elements will be copied via plain memcpy(). Is it a good idea? Will it be safe to store objects of non-POD types (e.g. pointers, vtable) in such containers? • Viewing and deleting partitions using the BIOS?

  I have an M4A785TD-M EVO Asus motherboard which uses Asus Express Gate for its motherboard (says American Megatrends, Inc at the bottom). I activate it by pressing Del; also says Tab activates BIOS Post but that doesn't seem to do anything. I went into this expecting to see a breakdown of the partitions. I have a 300GB hard-drive separated into 3 partitions. While it does show SATA for my main hard-drive and my disk drive, it doesn't show the partitions. Is this typical? Do I have to us an OS-based tool to delete the partitions or can I delete using my BIOS? I tried updating the BIOS through Asus's Update utility but it appears to be broken (connects/disconnects repeatedly). I used HWiNFO32 to get some information: BIOS Date: 06/30/10 BIOS Version: 2103 EFI BIOS: Not Capable Tried to update but it directs me to biosagentsplus.com which wants $30 for the download (another question would be how to avoid them).

  I installed Dashboard following this guide: http://wiki.openstack.org/OpenStackDashboard Everything fine, but when I run the server, I can not login with the username and password in DATABASE config in local_settings.py. • TechEd 2010 Day Four: Learning how to help others learn

  I do quite a few presentations, and teach at the University of Washington, and also teach other classes. But I'm always learning from others how to help others learn. At events like TechEd I have access to some of the best speakers around, so I try to find out what they do that works. I attended a great session by allen White, in which he demonstrated a set of PowerShell scripts. He said that Dan Jones of the Microsoft Manageability team told him while he demonstrated a script he needed to provide some visual way to represent the process. Allen used one of the oldest visualizations around - a flowchart. It was the first time I'd seen one used to illustrate a PowerShell script, and it was very effective. I'm totally stealing the idea. All of us are teachers - we help others on our team understand what we're up to. Make sure you make notes for what you find effective in dealing with you, and then meld that into your own way of teaching.   I'm trying to use plain-text emails to submit posts to my blog that's hosted on Blogger. I've set my email client to use plain-text but every time I send a post, Blogger hard wraps it instead of letting the text just flow. I've tried this with different mail clients and gotten the same results. I'm 100% sure that I'm sending plain text each time. Does anyone know how to get Blogger to quit doing this? Sigh. Maybe I'll switch to Wordpress...

• Simple Architecture Verification

  I just made an architecture for an application with the function of scoring, saving and loading tennis games. The architecture has 2 kinds of elements: components & layers. Components: Standalone elements that can be consumed by other components or by layers. They might also consume functionality from the model/bottom layer. Layers: Software components whose functionality rests on previous layers (except for the model layer). -Layers: -Models: Data and it's behavior. -Controllers: A layer that allows interaction between the views and the models. -Views: The presentation layer for interacting with the user. -Components: -Persistence: Makes sure the game data can be stored away for later retrieval. -Time Machine: Records changes in the game through time so it's possible to navigate the game back and forth. -Settings: Contains the settings that determine how some of the game logic will apply. -Game Engine: Contains all the game logic, which it applies to the game data to determine the path the game should take. Move through game history and see how the scoreboard changes as the game evolves. Tie-breaks must be properly managed. Games must be classified by hit-type. Every point can be modified. Match name and player names must be stored. Game logic must be configurable by the user. I would really appreciate any kind of advice or comments on this architecture.   I tried to switch from Java 5 to Java 6 using the "update-java-alternatives" command like explained on this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java But afterwards I get the following error when I tried to execute java: root@webserver:~# java Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. I also tried to reinstall the java binaries using "apt-get" but I didn't succeed reinstalling it. I would like to post the "apt-get" errors, but unfortunately I don't know how to print out the error messages in English and not in German. My system is a Ubuntu 8.04 ROOT server.

• Where does the information shown by OS X Terminal 'Display all commands' feature come from?

  I just learned that if you hit and hold ESC while on the Mac Terminal, a prompt appears after a few seconds offering to show every command available on your system, including aliases, built-ins, and executables on your PATH. Soruce: http://www.mactricksandtips.com/2008/05/list-all-possible-terminal-commands.html However, the output is show through a more filter, and I cannot grep it or pipe it to another command. Does anyone know how this magic output is generated? Is it just generated on the fly by Terminal? Is there a bash command that can be called explicitly on the command line and get the same result? It is mostly curiosity, but I would love to be able to get the results as text I can post-process and not just browse on screen.

• What are the requirements to test a website using jquery.get() ? [migrated]

  I am working on a simple website. It has to search quite a few text files in different sub-folders. The rest of the page uses jquery, so I would like to use it for this also. The function I am looking at is .get() for downloading the files. So my main question is, can I test this on my local computer (Ubuntu Linux) or do I have to have it uploaded to a server? Also, if there's a better way to go about this, that would be nice to know. However, I'm more worried about getting it working.   How to disable Windows File Protection in Windows 7 and/or XP from Registry? I want to automatically replace a driver with my created driver. I used PendingFileRenameOperations key in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager but i've found that it can ONLY be used for simple (not-system) files, because Windows File Protection disables it for system files (see this post). Now I need to temporarily disable WFP (and turn it on after changing driver). You can tell me another way to disable it. It can help me too. Thanks in advance! Any ideas?

  This might not be of interest to anyone living outside of the Netherlands, but I still wanted to share this. On march 10th the dutch .net usergroup dotNed (of which I am chairman) organizes a LAN party together with the company Sevensteps. Sevensteps is a big player in the Surface area: they are one of the few companies whose applications are part of the standard tools you get when you buy a Surface unit. They were also present at the CES in Las Vegas earlier this year to introduce the SUR40, as mentioned in my previous post. But they do not only develop software for the Surface, they also do a lot of interesting things on other platforms. One of these is Windows Phone 7, or WP7 in short. Sevensteps and dotNed have joined forces to organize a free full day event where we will develop a WP7 application. The people attending will be developers (experienced and not so experienced on WP7), designers and all other sorts of people you’d expect in a project team. The day will start around 9.00 am and will end when the app is finished. We will form teams of both experienced and not experienced developers so that we can learn from each other. Each team will have their own task to perform, and in the end all parts will be assembled to form a killer WP7 app. As with everything that dotNed does this event is free for everyone. Microsoft will pay for dinner, Sevensteps will provide the room, lunch and ideas (and their expertise of course) and the rest is up to us! • TV video constantly skips 1/2 second, plays 1 second; green on bottom

  I just got DirecTV. It worked for a day, but now the TV video constantly skips 1/2 second, then plays 1 second. Also, the bottom 5th of the screen is solid green. The audio does not skip. I tried to do "Set up TV signal" (in Media Center) - but I get an error. See the post I just made here titled "Error - “IR Hardware not detected” - but it’s installed/working." Thanks for your help.

• CUDA & MSI GT60 with Optimus enabled GTX670M?

  I have a MSI GT60 Laptop with an Optimus enabled GTX 670M GPU, and I have been trying to get CUDA going in Ubuntu 12.04 environment. I realize that Optimus is not supported in Linux, but I have read the following post suggesting that CUDA works for hybrid GPUs. How can I get nVidia CUDA or OpenCL working on a laptop with nVidia discrete card/Intel Integrated Graphics? I installed the NVIDIA driver via sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current The resulting driver version is 302.17, and supposedly GTX 670M is supported since 295.59. I also downloaded CUDA 4.2 from the NVIDIA site, and compiled it against nvidia-current libraries. Unfortunately, when I run deviceQuery in the CUDA SDK, I get the following output cudaGetDeviceCount returned 38 -> no CUDA-capable device is detected Checking /proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/0/information gives the following Model: GeForce GTX 670M IRQ: 16 GPU UUID: GPU-????????-????-????-????-???????????? Video BIOS: ??.??.??.??.?? • Lighting with VBO

  I'm using a Java JOGL wrapper called processing.org. I have coded some enviroment on it and I'm quite proud of it even if it has some ready stuffs that I didn't know anything about it (==LIGHTS). Then, for some geometry, I've decided to use a VBO. I had to pass in the hard way and recode all lights. But I can't achieve the same result. • Software Center empty "No usefulness from server" "no username in config file"

  I upgraded to 12.04 LTS and ran Software Center while a few things were running, and crashed. (2 GB RAM on a Netbook.) On reboot, Ubuntu One interface would not find any programs, neither installed (to run) nor available for download. So I launched Software Center, which opens, but does nothing. I click "Close" button and get a "Force Quit?" box. So I quit. Did research, learned to run Software Center from Terminal: 2012-04-29 23:14:36,978 - softwarecenter.backend.reviews - WARNING - Could not get usefulness from server, no username in config file Then tried the below without success: Reinstallation of software center: sudo apt-get install --reinstall software-center Didn't work. Found this in a post: remove the config file for software-center then log out and back in sudo rm -rf ~/.config/software-center Didn't work. Reinstalled Software Center with Synaptic Package Manager. Still no dice! And I am a Linux newbie, so I don't know where the Dickens that config file is. Help appreciated.

  I used the Bing webmaster tool's SEO analyzer on my website, and it reported There are multiple <H1> tags on the page. It recommends that there should only be one <h1> tag on the page. The page is a listing of blog posts for a category. So each blog entry is structured like this. <article> <head><h1><a>...</a></h1></head> <p>summary...</p> </article> <article> <head><h1><a>...</a></h1></head> <p>summary...</p> </article> <article> <head><h1><a>...</a></h1></head> <p>summary...</p> </article> <article> <head><h1><a>...</a></h1></head> <p>summary...</p> </article> How is this invalid? I thought this was the correct way to describe a post in HTML5.

• bash-like features in sqlplus, rman and other Oracle command line tools

  As far as I can remember, I have always been complaining about the lack of “recall last command” from within sqlplus. Such a basic thing, available in any bash shell or windows cmd terminal, remains missing with Oracle command lines tools. Thanks to davidw who published a post in the french blog EASYTEAM, it is now possible to use a simple rpm package rlwrap to enhance sqlplus, dgmgrl, rman, … tools and give them bash “recall/completion” capabilities. I installed it in a few minutes and I am already wondering how can people work without it. The steps are here : Get the rpm file from sites like RPM PBone. AS root, install the package rpm -ivh rlwrap-0.37-1.el5.x86_64.rpm As Oracle, create a dictionnary file (for autocompletion) . This file is made of a series of words to be used for autocompletion. Put in it the list of dictionary tables, the list of sql commands, the list of sqlplus commands… whatever your like. And use the <tab> key as you would in a bash shell. $HOME/.oracle_keywords Create an alias for sqlplus alias sqlplus='/usr/bin/rlwrap -if $HOME/.oracle_keywords $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus' And enjoy it !!!   i recently tried installed java 7 on ubuntu 12.04 and i think i screwed something up I followed the instructions given here. First you need to remove openjdk for this run the following command from your terminal sudo apt-get purge openjdk* Now you can install Java7 by adding the following repository: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:eugenesan/java sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer Now everytime i install a new program i get the following error: Download done. sha256sum mismatch jdk-7u3-linux-x64.tar.gz Oracle JDK 7 is NOT installed. dpkg: error processing oracle-java7-installer (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Setting up python-central (0.6.17ubuntu1) ... Setting up python-eggtrayicon (2.25.3-11) ... Setting up gmail-notify (1.6.1.1-1ubuntu1) ... Processing triggers for python-central ... Errors were encountered while processing: oracle-java7-installer Error in function: However.The program seems to install and work just fine so it doesn't seem to be a problem preventing me from doing anything So then i reinstalled openjdk by going: sudo apt-get install openjdk* But i still get the same error. going: sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer gives me the same error. What is going on? Please let me know if this is clear or not and ill try to explain my issue better
