• Why don't windows of the same application behave as they should?

  Somewhere along the upgrade path, Unity has developed some strange logic behind window layering. First, before Oneiric, there was a way to see all the windows of an application - I think it was when you click on the icon in the launcher. Now, clicking on the icon often does nothing. Suppose I have two terminals open, one behind this Firefox window, and one in front of it. Clicking on the launcher does nothing - the only way to find the second terminal, afaics, is to move the Firefox window or use the task switcher. Secondly, once I have both terminals on top, then I decide to close one of them, suddenly they both disappear (the second one, for some reason, has gone into hiding behind the Firefox window). Third (though I can't pin it down now), sometimes when a window is on top, focus is still on a window in back; I click on the top x to close the window in front, only to find I've closed an important window in the back. (Update: this question details the problem) I can't really believe these are bugs, since they seem too obvious to not have been fixed by now. My question is, am I missing something? Some compiz option I can set to make it act like it used to? Or is this really how Unity is supposed to act?

• How to Create Shortcuts to Programs on USB Drives

  If you work on multiple computers, you probably use a USB drive to take your favorite portable software with you. Portable application suites like PortableApps.com, CodySafe, or Lupo PenSuite, each have a main menu providing access to the programs installed into the suite. However, there may be reasons why you need to create shortcuts to programs on your USB drive. You may be using a program that does not integrate into the suite’s main menu. Or, you may not be using an official portable application suite at all, and just placing portable software in a folder on your USB drive. Maybe you prefer using shortcuts on the root of the USB drive, like a portable desktop. Whatever your reason, you can’t just create a shortcut to an application on the USB drive and place it in the root of the drive. The shortcut will always refer to the full path of the application, including the drive letter. Different computers assign different drive letters to USB flash drives, so you would have to change the drive letter for your shortcuts when it changes. You can assign a static drive letter to the USB drive. However, if you would rather not do that, there is a way to create shortcuts to programs on a USB drive using relative paths. Because Windows does not support relative paths in shortcuts, we will show you how to create a “shortcut” on the root of a USB drive by creating a batch (.bat) file and converting it to an executable (.exe) file. • How to configure sudoers to always keep LD_LIBRARY_PATH envrionment variable?

  No matter what I try, it seems that the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable is not kept after I run a command with sudo. The only way I managed to have it stick, is to prefix my sudo command with LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/the/path whenever I call it from the command-line, but I would like to not have to do this every time. It seems the env_keep option ignores this variable, and so does the exempt_group option. My %group currently has ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:ALL as its access in sudoers. I would like this specific environment variable to be kept for any command I run. How can I do this? My server is running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.7.

• Fix: Cant Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008 from DVD

  If you installed Visual Studio 2008 on a 64-bit operating system, you may have trouble when you try ad add or remove functionality by inserting the disk (or remounting the ISO image).  I believe this is because of the path used to install the 32-bit Visual Studio program.  When you run the setup.exe off of the disk, you get this: Clicking on Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008 brings up this dialog: But not long after it appears, it disappears to be replaced with: Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Setup A problem has been encountered while loading the setup components.  Canceling setup. FIX: Use Add or Remove Programs Launch the Add or Remove Programs dialog in Windows, and find Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite ENU (or whichever SKU you installed).  Click Uninstall/Change.  From here you should be able to change your installed components of Visual Studio successfully: Thanks to Brendan for the tip! We would like to use urls like 'somecity.domain.com' on campaign materials and have the result go to city-specific content within the 'www' site. So, here are use cases, if the customer enters: www.domain.com (stays) www.domain.com domain.com (goes to) www.domain.com www.domain.com/someuri (stays the same) somecity.domain.com (no uri, goes to) www.domain.com/somecity/prelaunch somecity.domain.com/landing (goes to) www.domain.com/somecity/prelaunch somecity.domain.com/anyotheruri (goes to) www.domain.com/anyotheruri Here's what I've come up with so far, and it partially works. • How to change windows bootloader target folder

  Here is described part of windows boot process. I would like to ask if there is a way to change boot folder, I mean to use something else instead of C:\WINDOWS. And of course that something else is a copy of Windows directory. It looks like bcdedit is good for that purpose but I'm not sure how to use that. That I want is to change path, which currently is \Windows\system32\winload.exe to \Windows Copy\system32\winload.exe Another thing I have found out is registry, HKLM\BCD00000000\Objects\{df90fe29-c40d-11e2-a7bb-92410b6e649d}\Elements\12000002::Element value is \Windows\system32\winload.exe so changing this also may be promising. But I'm not sure if I should change registry value and don't know how to use bcdedit, so any related help will be appreciated.

• How can I avoid a 302 for Fetch as Bot?

  I originally posted this on Stackoverflow, but I believe here is a better place to ask. My web application is very similar to notepad.cc which redirects to a randomly generated URL upon access, e.g. http://myapp.com/roTr94h4Gd. (Please note that notepad.cc is not my site.) Probably because of this redirect feature, when I do "fetch as Google" or "fetch as Bingbot", I get a 302 and no html content. Not even a <html></html> tag. I also added a header to return 200 before redirecting, but this had no effect, either. Could someone tell me a good suggestion to solve this problem?

• FoxPro 2.6 DOS on Windows 7 64-bit

  I support a company that has a very old, mission critical, FoxPro for DOS 2.6 (FPD) application. For variuos reasons the company didn't adapt/migrate their app, which, ironically, has been running even better under Windows XP (and 32-bit Win7) because the OS allowed new features like more reliable networking, distributed printing, email integration. Unfortunately for this company, most new machines now come with a 64-bit version of Windows 7, which is incompatible with their FPD app. I know this time the writing is on the wall: the only long-term solution is to migrate their app. But I wonder if anyone can suggest a temporary alternative path, which doesn't involve either: downgrade 64-bit Windows to 32-bit, or run the app on a virtualized 32-bit XP

  I am using mount.cifs to mount a remote samba share (both client and server are Ubuntu server 8.04) like this: mount.cifs //sambaserver/samba /mountpath -o credentials=/path/.credentials,uid=someuser,gid=1000 $ cat .credentials username=user password=password I mounted a user from local system with username and password with mount.cifs but the problem is that the user is part of multiple groups on the remote system and with mount.cifs I can only specify one gid. Is there a way to specify all the gids that the remote user has? Is there a way to: Mount the remote samba with multiple groups on the local system? Other solutions would be: nautilus sftp:// which runs through gvfs; but the newer gnome does not write to disk the ~/.gvfs anymore so I can't browse it in terminal. And the last solution would be NFS but that means that I have to synchronize the uids and gids on the local system with the ones from the server.

• Dragging a shape in Photoshop doesn't show outline

  I've created a shape in Photoshop with the Rounded Rectangle tool. Now I want to reposition it. When I use the Path Selection tool to move it, Photoshop doesn't seem to pick up the shape. When I let go of the mouse button, the shape moves to wherever I've moved the mouse. I'm used to there being an outline as I drag, so I can position the shape in its final place but this outline isn't showing up. Is there some setting like "Show outline when dragging" that I've changed by mistake?

  Since many of you are already there I figured this might be a great place to invite ideas and suggestion for becoming a software developer. My background I have some basic knowledge of programming in VB and C++ from a course I had pursued 8 years ago. My main drawback is a lack of experience in software since I was in a teaching career until a year ago. I am working as a QA tester and finally got a chance to write some automation tests scripts using C#. I didn't have any prior knowledge of C# but I was able to figure my way through it. Questions Given this context: Would anyone have any ideas as to what would be a good approach to learn enough to actually be able to work as a developer? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what kind of learning path to adopt and which approaches speed up learning curve? Would pursuing university course be helpful in terms of knowledge gained? Are certification exams a way to go for a beginner? Are community college courses useful? What about courses offered by private institutes/centers? Any suggestion for some good books?

• Where to obtain openssl-devel for SunOS 5.10

  So I am having an issue that I have seen other people have on many different systems. I have to build Subversion on a SunOS 5.10 box and have run into issues. I have the openssl source code installed and in the subversion-1.6.9 folder, I run the following: ./configure --with-ssl --with-libs=/opt/exp/lib/openssl/lib and receive the error: checking for library containing RSA_new... not found configure: error: could not find library containing RSA_new configure failed for neon I have also tried running the command without the "lib" on the end of the --with-libs path. I read online that I need the openssl-devel packages, but I have been unable to find them for SunOS 5.10, and they do not show up already installed on my system when running pkginfo. I have looked online including http://www.sunfreeware.com/ which I was told was a good SunOS software source. Any help you can provide would be welcomed. Thanks, Sean

• Locking down a server for shared internet hosting.

  Basically I control several servers and I only host either static websites or scripts which I have designed, so I trust them up to a point. However, I have a few customers who want to start using scripts such as Wordpress or many others - and they want full control over their account. I have started to do the basics - like on php.ini, I have locked it down and restricted commands such as proc, however, there is obviously a lot more I can do. right now, using NTFS permissions, I am trying to lock down the server by running Application Pools and individual sites in their own user, however I feel like I am hitting brick walls... (My old question on Server Fault). At the moment, the only route I can think of is either to implement an off the shelf control panel - which will be expensive and quite frankly, over the top, or look at the Microsoft guide - which is really for an entire infrastructure, not for someone who just wants to lock down a few servers. Does anyone have any guides that can put me on the correct path?

• Steps to send patch to Launchpad

  With a Git/Github background and knowing very little about Bazaar VCS, I would like to occasionally report a bug to Launchpad and even send a patch. I'd like to do it in a "proper" way so that it's ready for merging or improvement while not getting in way. I can't seem to find a decent simple How-to suited for my needs. So what I did so far: I have created a Launchpad account, reported the bug, installed Bazaar and setup SSH keys etc. Now if it was Github, I'd fork the repo, clone the forked repo, create a sanely named branch and do the work, commit + push, create a pull request using Github WUI. But it's not Github, and both LP and Bazaar architectures seem quite different from their Github/Git cunterparts. So could a kind soul save me from drowning in tons of documents and complile a straightforward step path, mainly the second part? Possibly including relevant CLI commands when they are needed? Edit: It seems that I should clarify if I'm asking specifically about Ubuntu packages (whatever it means) or Launchpad packages. I don't really care much about distinction between Ubuntu packages and non-Ubuntu packages. Any software could be in Ubuntu today and out of it tomorrow, or vice-versa. The development is what matters much more than distribution. Ao I was assuming that not every single package distributed in Ubuntu is hosted on Launchpad, an "official" or "default" workflow for Launchpad exists (well if all devs can agree on using Bazaar, why couldn't most of them agree on a patching workflow?), so I'm asking about the Launchpad way, not the Ubuntu way. And I chose AU because since the intersection is vast, I guess it's pretty on topic here.

File(/tmp) is not within the allowed path(s): (/customers/rollergirl.ch/rollergirl.ch:/var/www/diagnostics:/usr/share/php) in /customers/rollergirl.ch/rollergirl.ch/httpd.www/drupal/sites/all/modules/imagecache/imagecache.install on line 37. ImageCache Temp Directory /tmp is not writeable by the webserver. I guess this happen because the server is not configured with a writable tmp folder I don't have access to Apache configuration file (I only know for sure it is Apache).   I need to be able to PUT files and GET them later using nothing but HTTP, so I went searching for something that might match the terms "REST file server" or "HTTP file server" or "REST drop-box", etc. Unfortunately, these terms bring up the wrong kind of results on Google. What I want is the equivalent of an SMB fileshare over HTTP. Some ideal features: Can PUT a file of any type at http://servername/service/any/path/I/want/document.pdf Anyone with access can GET that file at the URL I PUT it at Supports AV scanning on any new file that has been PUT Supports DELETE of existing resources (files) Our shop runs Windows, but I'd be interested to know about Unix software that can do this kind of thing, too. It's to be used in an IT department for private users only. It won't be on a public-facing IP address. Does anything like this exist?
