  Question: Is it possible to compile a program on linux using a .dll file? Where this is going: This .dll will be used to write a php extension to some proprietary software from a third party. Background and Research: I have been given a library called proprietary.lib. I was curious, as I have never seen the .lib extension before, so I typed: file proprietary.lib The output was: proprietary.lib: current ar archive I did some research and found that ar is more-or-less tar (and in fact, I guess tar has since replaced ar in most *nix environments). Upon inspecting the ar manpage, I saw the t option, which displays a table listing of the contents of that archive. Cool. So I type: ar t proprietary.lib And get: proprietary.dll proprietary.dll ... • How do I customize what a third party MSM does?

  I'm trying to convert a project in Visual Studio 2008 from static linking of the CRT to dynamic linking. This was easy enough, and I added the CRT MSM and policy MSM to my Wix file with no problems. I am not that happy with the MSI that is output though, it is much larger than what I expected. Looking at the MSI with Orca shows three copies of the CRT DLLs that I need. From looking at the conditions, one of the sets is used for pre-XP installs. Since the system requirements are XP and later, how do I remove this component without touching the original MSM? This needs to be done in an automated build, so Orca isn't a possible solution. Plus, when I tried it with Orca, the filesize remained the same after deleting the File and Component rows. And somewhat related, how do I set the permanent attribute in the components that remain?

• Reading what is in the vsdiagnostics blob in Azure (1.7)

  I've enabled Diagnostics in one of my Worker roles and published it to Azure. There was a new blob container created called "vsdiagnostics" and contained within in are two binary files. I'm assuming that these files contain the output of my Trace statements, but I'm unable to open these files as I have no idea what format they are in. I've not found anything on www.windowsazure.com about it and most of the tools they recommend are very outdated. I have installed Cerebrata's Azure Diagnostics Manager, but that isn't able to load the Trace Logs. If anyone could point me in the right direction I'd be grateful!

• What happened to the Windows "Midi Mapper"

  I wrote a windows program many years ago, which created music by sending notes to the "midi mapper" (and thence to the midi-synth on my sound-card) Today, I have a soft-synth which, allegedly accepts midi information, so I'd assume it should be possible to use today's equivalent of a midi-mapper to route the midi output from my program to the soft-synth. There's clearly no longer a midi-mapper application in windows, but my program still works (on XP) in that it drives the built-in soundcard synth, so there must be some sort of midi handling layer in windows. How can I get at this? And maybe redirect the midi to the soft-synth?

Now I'm looking to search for a given winner X in the table, and find out what position he is in, when the table is ordered by points.   Background I am realtively new to hooks, and I have been asked to use a hook to populate a view with some data, currently the view gathers it data from a function that is in the model, and becuase the whole object is being passed to the view I can access the function.   In my PHP code I have this: $filename = 'data.xml'; $xml = file_get_contents($filename); $data = simplexml_load_string($xml); $variable = ""; foreach ($data->file_info as $record) { $id1 = $record['id1']; $id2 = $record['id2']; } And it works perfectly fine on the web server, but when trying to view it locally (using xampp) I get the following output at the top of my pgae: file_info as $record) { $id1 = $record['id1']; $id2 = $record['id2']; } (followed by another 100 or so lines of PHP) Not sure if it would make a difference, the web server it works on is running linux, and I am trying to view it on windows using xampp)

  Hi I am working on an app at the moment that requires number input to be formatted as the textfield changes as well as perform a calculation. I have the text fields set up so that as the user types notifications are passed out and a calculation is performed. However what I need to do now is format the text to be in this style: €1,000,000 rather than 1000000. I have this working for the output of the calculation already but everytime I try to apply it to the input text the simulator seems to crash or at least freezes for a while. I'd imagine its a simple enough fix.

  So I'm running through a list of things and have code that creates an .xml files with IO::File called $doc, then I make a new writer with XML::Writer(OUTPUT => $doc). More code runs and I build a big XML file with XML::Writer. Then, near the end of the file, I find out if I need this file at all. If I do need it, I just: $writer->end(); $doc->close(); but if I don't need it, what should I enter to just delete all data I've stored/saved and move onto the next file? I tried unlink($docpath) (before and after $doc->close()), the file was not deleted.

• What to know - for building a form with PHP and MySQL

  Hello all, I have three weeks to perform the following basic task. I wish to create an online form in PHP that will get 5 numbers and with them: save the numbers to a MySQL DB do a simple computation on the numbers and return them as an output to the visitor I already have a domain, hosting and a MySQL database+user. I don't know PHP, or SQL or databases. I do have prior knowledge in C and R (which means I have some of the basics of programming, and I am not intimidated of a new languages). My question are: Am I missing something? is there some other skill I should have for this task that I don't know of? What is a good way to learn the skills needed for the task I described? Hope the question isn't too basic/general. Thanks!

• Writing asynchronously on a stream in cocoa

  Hi folks I have been trying to find any way for writing asynchronously on a stream in Cocoa. I have a set of events in my applications which will try to send data through the socket but i can't be blocked during this transmission due to design terms. I have tried setting a delegate on the output stream and check the event NSStreamEventHasSpaceAvailable but I don't know how this can be combined with the events that put data into the stream. Is there anyway for doing that? I thought using NSThread but I guess there is a better option. Cheers

• Configuring a library to be included with C++ test

  Hello, I would like to utilize the UnitTest++ library in a testing file. However, I am having some difficulty getting the library to be included at compile time. So here is my current directory structure: tests/ UnitTests++/ libUnitTest++.a src/ UnitTests++.h unit/ test.cpp I have just used the UnitTest++ getting started guide to just get the library setup. Here is test.cpp: // test.cpp #include <UnitTest++.h> TEST(FailSpectacularly) { CHECK(false); } int main() { return UnitTest::RunAllTests(); } And I am currently trying to compile with: gcc -lUnitTest++ -L../UnitTest++/ -I../UnitTest++/src/ test.cpp I am currently getting a bunch output with ld: symbol(s) not found at the end. So how would I be able to get the UnitTest++ library properly included when this program is compiled? I am on a Mac and I'd also like for there to be an easy way for people on a Linux machine to run these same tests. Whew, I hope this provides enough information, if not please let me know.

• IIS 7 - floats returning with commas instead of periods

  I'm having trouble reading rows with float values, because these rows return for example 12,34 instead of 12.34 as it should. I suspect this is because both my IIS and SQL server is on a Norwegian Windows Server 2008. So I went to the regional settings and customized the default decimal symbol, then restarted my servers. The output in the database now shows the period decimal symbol, but when I request it through the IIS server it comes comma separated (the IIS server is on another computer, but that also has the default decimal symbol set to period). The IIS server is IIS7 and the SQL Server is 2008 Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• An efficient code to determine if a set is a subset of another set

  I am looking for an efficient way to determine if a set is a subset of another set in Matlab or Mathematica. Example: Set A = [1 2 3 4] Set B = [4 3] Set C = [3 4 1] Set D = [4 3 2 1] The output should be: Set A Sets B and C belong to set A because A contains all of their elements, therefore, they can be deleted (the order of elements in a set doesn't matter). Set D has the same elements as set A and since set A precedes set D, I would like to simply keep set A and delete set D. So there are two essential rules: 1. Delete a set if it is a subset of another set 2. Delete a set if its elements are the same as those of a preceding set My Matlab code is not very efficient at doing this - it mostly consists of nested loops. Suggestions are very welcome! Additional explanation: the issue is that with a large number of sets there will be a very large number of pairwise comparisons.

• Why would the first call to a KVC setter have an NSTextField instance as the argument?

  If I have a NSTextField bound through an NSObjectController to a model object, I would expect the setter of the model object to be called with an NSString as the argument, but instead, I receive the instance of the control that I am bound too the first time I am called. - (NSString *)property { NSLog(@"returning property"); return property; } - (void)setProperty:(NSString *)string { NSLog(@"recieved %@", string) } - (id) init { if (self = [super init]) { property = [[NSString alloc] initWithString:@"value"]; } NSLog(@"property is %@",property"); return self; } (The program doesn't run if you try anything in setProperty, because it tries to send NSString messages to string - which might be an NSTextField.) • How to create a tree with filtered nodes from drupal taxonomy.

  I'm trying to create a menu tree in drupal like this: - term 1 node 1 node 2 - sub-term 1 node 3 node 4 + sub-term 2 - sub-term 3 node 5 - sub-sub-term 1 node 6 + term 2 etc. (Sub-term 2 and term 2 are toggled closed.) Some requirements: Output this using something like JQuery Menu to get an interactive tree Filter the nodes by cck type Filter the nodes by cck field Only have terms with nodes or other active terms in them show up Mark the current node as such, and automatically open the tree to that point Do I have to write this myself, or are there a combination of modules that can do it? I've got Advanced Taxonomy Blocks, which is pretty close, but it doesn't list the nodes.

• CakePHP - Just Layout?

  I want to set $this->layout to json in the controller action. In the json layout, there will be a line saying $this->Javascript>object(); which will parse through the data given to it by the controller, and output the jSON. However, creating a new view file for each jSON request, eg. recipe_view, ingredient_view isn't necessary, I just need a layout. Is there a way to bypass the view file altogether and have just the layout, without the notorious Missing View! error? Many Thanks Kieran

I'm a very new python user (had only a little prior experience with html/javascript as far as programming goes), and was trying to find some ways to output only intermittent numbers in my loop for a basic bicycle racing simulation (10,000 lines of biker positions would be pretty excessive :P). • bash command history update before execution of command

  Hi, Bash's command history is great, especially it is useful when adding the history -a command to the COMMAND_PROMPT. However, I'm wondering if there is a way to log the commands to a file as soon as the Return key is pressed, e.g. before starting the command and not on completion of the command (using the COMMAND_PROMPT option would save the command once the prompt is there again). I read about auditing programs like snoopy and session recorder like script but I thought they're already too complex for the simple question I have. I guess that deactivating that script logs all the output of the command would lead already in the right direction but isn't there a quicker way to solve that probelm? Thanks, Jon

  I have a table "Families", like so FamilyID PersonID Relationship ----------------------------------------------- F001 P001 Son F001 P002 Daughter F001 P003 Father F001 P004 Mother F002 P005 Daughter F002 P006 Mother F003 P007 Son F003 P008 Mother and I need output like FamilyID PersonID Father Mother ------------------------------------------------- F001 P001 P003 P004 F001 P002 P003 P004 F001 P003 F001 P004 F002 P005 P006 F002 P006 F003 P007 P008 F003 P008 In which the PersonID of the Father and Mother for a given PersonID are listed (if applicable) in separate columns. I know this must be a relatively trivial query to write (and therefore to find instructions for), but I can't seem to come up with the right search terms. Searching "SQL recursive queries" has gotten me closest, but I can't quite translate those methods to what I'm trying to do here. I'm trying to learn, so multiple methods are welcome, as is vocabulary I should read up on. Thanks!
