    We use Visual Studio 2008, with visual source safe v8. Lately, I seem to be getting a lot more crashes than usual, mainly when viewing history (comparing, etc.).   • Combine file transfer dialogs

    I am considering upgrading my work computer to use windows 8 as the new file transferring feature seems very useful. Unfortunately after installing windows 8 on my home pc to test it out, the files are being transferred in separate dialogs as opposed to this image provided by microsoft. As I am transferring files constantly a single transfer dialog would make things much less confusing. Does anyone know what settings to change to make file transfers appear in the same window?

    If I try to access this system variable from the Run... dialog, Windows tells me the directory doesn't exist. Some system variables, like %SYSTEMROOT% and %USERPROFILE%, do work. Consequently, if I try to use a supposedly nonexistent variable like %DEFAULTUSERPROFILE% or %PROFILESFOLDER% in C#, I get nothing in return. Is there something special I need to do to get access to these variables?

    I have an asterisk system that I'm attempting to get to work as a backup for our 3com system. We already use it for a conference bridge. Our phones are the 3com 3C10402B, so I don't have the issue of older 3com phones that come without a SIP image. The 3com phones are communicating SIP with the Asterisk, but are unable to register because they present a digest username value that doesn't match what Asterisk thinks it should. As an example, here are the relevant lines from a successful registration from a soft phone: Server sends: WWW-Authenticate: Digest algorithm=MD5, realm="asterisk", nonce="1cac3853" Phone responds: Authorization: Digest username="2321", realm="asterisk", nonce="1cac3853", uri="sip:192.168.254.12", algorithm=md5, response="d32df9ec719817282460e7c2625b6120" For the 3com phone, those same lines look like this (and fails): Server sends: WWW-Authenticate: Digest algorithm=MD5, realm="asterisk", nonce="6c915c33" Phone responds: Authorization: Digest username="sip:[email protected]", realm="asterisk", nonce="6c915c33", uri="sip:192.168.254.12", opaque="", algorithm=MD5, response="a89df25f19e4b4598595f919dac9db81" Basically, Asterisk wants to see a username in the Digest username field of 2321, but the 3com phone is sending sip:[email protected].     I have remote email access from an iPhone or my Android phone, but I cannot setup a Windows Email Client to check my email using the exact same information I provided in my phones. The email system is an Exchange 2003 and I hate using the cheap Outlook Web App that it has. User: [email protected] Password: 1234 Server: mail.domain.com And that works for they phones. So why can't I get it to work on my email client? Maybe a DNS problem?

  • Cannot turn on "Network Discovery and File Sharing" when Windows Firewall is enabled

    I have a problem similar to this one. Windows Firewall prevents File and Printer sharing from working and Why does File and Printer Sharing keep turning off in Windows 7? I cannot turn on Network Discovery. This is Windows 7 Home Premium, x64. It's a Dell XPS 1340 and Windows came installed from the OEM. This used to work. Now it doesn't. I don't know what has changed. In windows Explorer, the UI looks like this: When I click the yellow panel that says "Click to change...", the panel disappears, then immediately reappears, with exactly the same text. If I go through the control panel "Network and Sharing Center" thing, the UI looks like this: If I tick the box to "turn on network discovery", the "Save Changes" button becomes enabled. If I then click that button, the dialog box just closes, with no message or confirmation. Re-opening the same dialog box shows that Network Discovery has not been turned on. If I turn off Windows Firewall, I can then turn on Network Discovery via either method. The machine is connected to a wireless home network, via a router. The network is marked as "Home Network" in the Network and Sharing Center, which I think corresponds to the "Private" profile in Windows Firewall Advanced Settings app. (Confirm?) The PC is not part of a domain, and has never been part of a domain. The machine is not bridging any networks. There is a regular 100baseT connector but I have the network adapter for that disabled in Windows. Something else that seems odd. Within Windows Firewall Advanced Settings, there are no predefined rules available. If I click the "New Rule...." Action on the action pane, the "Predefined" option is greyed out. like this: In order to attempt to allow the network discovery protocols through on the private network, I hand-coded a bunch of rules, intending to allow the necessary UPnP and WDP protocols supporting network discovery. I copied them from a working Windows 7 Ultimate PC, running on the same network. This did not work. Even with the hand-coded rules, I still cannot turn on Network Discovery. I looked on the interwebs, and the only solution that appears to work is a re-install of Windows. Seriously? If I try netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Network Discovery" new enable=Yes ...it says "No rules match the specified criteria" EDIT: by the way, these services are running. DNS Client Function Discovery Resource Publication SSDP Discovery UPnP Device Host in any case, since it works with no firewall, I would assume all necessary services are present and running. The issue is a firewall thing, but I don't know how to diagnose further, or fix it. Q1: Is there a way to definitively insure the correct holes are punched through the Windows Firewall to allow Network Discovery to function? Q2: Should I expect the "predefined" firewall rules to be greyed out? Q3: Why did this change?

  • Server 2003 R2 doesn't allow logon after a few days of uptime

    We have a server 2003 R2 standard (which I'll refer to as SRV01) that's knocking on a bit now, but it still acts as a file, print and SQL server on our company's network. SRV01 hosts user profiles, home directories and pretty much all our business data. Note our AD is currently at 2008 R2 level. This server is due to be upgraded in the next 12 months, but I've no budget to spend on it just yet. A bit of history of this server follows: When SRV01 was first commissioned, it acted as a domain controller (with the same 2003 R2 install it has today), paired with another server that ran Server 2003 R2 SBS. A few years ago, we purchased a pair of dedicated DCs (2008 R2) and at this point we decommissioned the 2003 SBS server, and SRV01 was DCPROMOed out of the AD. Up until very recently, SRV01 used to run Exchange 2003, however we've recently purchased a dedicated server for Exchange 2010 and upgraded (following Microsoft recommended upgrade path). Exchange 2003 was recently uninstalled. - Cleanly to the best of my knowledge. Ever since Exchange was removed from SRV01, I'm finding that after a few days of uptime, when I attempt to logon, pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL just hides the Welcome to Windows Server 2003 banner, and never presents the logon dialog. All I see is a moveable mouse pointer and a blank background. It's a similar story with an admin TS session, the RDP client connects and gives me a blank background, but no logon dialog is presented. The RDP session indefinitely hangs until I give up and close it. The only way I've been able to gain access to the server is to pull the plug on it. Whilst the server does have a battery backed up RAID 5 controller, I'm unhappy about having to do this, so as a temporary measure, I've created a scheduled job to reboot SRV01 each night. Not only do I not like the idea of scheduling a reboot of a server like this, but it is also causing problems for users that leave desktop PCs left logged on overnight. Users complain of 'Delayed Write Failures', and there has also been a number of users that have started to complain about account lockout problems, as well as users not able to connect to shares on SRV01 until they reboot their desktop PCs. I've examined event logs on SRV01 and on the DCs looking for clues as to what the problem is, but there really is nothing untoward being logged. How could I being to investigate this problem when nothing of any relevance is being logged? Is there some additional logging that can be enabled that might give some clues as to what could be causing this problem? Could performance monitor help me out here, and if so, what counters would you consider monitoring? It's worth mentioning that whilst the server is unresponsive via the console and TS, it does still respond to clients connecting to shares without problems for several days, but after about a week I then start to hear users reporting problems accessing shares, but this seems quite sporadic. I've also tried leaving the console logged on (and locked), when I notice I can no longer logon via TS, I can unlock the server console without problem, but it refuses to reboot/shutdown, and subsequent attempts to reboot report that a system shutdown is already in progress and the system then completely hangs. I've tried playing the waiting game for several hours thinking that a timeout might allow the shutdown to continue, but to no avail.
