• Munin email notification

  I am trying to get munin to notify me via email. I have configured munin and it reports critical and warning values but no alerts are being sent neither is any script being called. Can you please help me out with this? • How do I stop Firefox on Ubuntu from trying to load whatever is in my clipboard when I middle-click

  In Firefox on Ubuntu, if I middle-click anywhere on a page that's not a link, it seems to treat whatever text is in the clipboard as a URL and tries to load it. This is annoying, since if I either accidentally click the middle button or (more often) miss a link when trying to middle-click it, I'll either go to whatever URL is in my clipboard or get an alert saying: The URL is invalid and cannot be loaded Is there any way of either: a) Disabling this functionality so that middle-click on a non-link does nothing (maybe an about:config setting?, or b) Making the functionality more intelligent, so that it will only try and open text if it looks like a URL (this seems like a job for a plugin).

  Now this is weird. Copied a chunk of a text from somewhere into clipboard. Ran mvim from a tmux buffer. Opened a file in MacVim. Pasted the text. MacVim results with the error: E353: Nothing to register + Nothing gets pasted. The plot thickens: I try to copy this error -- paste fails. I go over the same steps, this time running MacVim from a regular Terminal window (without tmux) -- Everything is in its right place. Whaa?

• How do I enable in-place tablet pc input panel for non tablet PCs?

  Hi all, Is it possible to enable the in-place tablet PC input panel on a non-tablet PC? I have checked the "For tablet pen input, show the Input Panel icon next to the text entry area when possible" checkbox in the options of the Input Panel. Does this not work because pen input is something different than mouse input? I do have a touch screen, but it just emulates a mouse (moving the cursor, pressing the left mouse button and such). I can get the Input Panel to show manually by starting tabtip.exe and then event the ink works, but I cannot get it to show (itself or it's in-place icon) when I activate text input controls. Does anyone know what's up?

  In my work as a developer I sometimes find myself sending details emails with screenshots to illustrate some point or problem. The content of these screenshots is often text. So knowing that PNG is much better at handle compression of images with text, I save my screenshots as PNG and insert them into my email. However whenever I check my sent mail, the images are clearly being sent as a JPG because they look horribly compressed. I'm using Outlook 2003 as my email program. Is there some setting I can change to make Outlook send inline images as PNGs?

I've used the Live HTTP Headers extension for Firefox to check whether the POST fields get submitted, and they do. The relevant information from Live HTTP Headers (with a, b and c filled in as values in the textboxes): Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded Content-Length: 51 test%5B1%5D=a&test%5B2%5D=b&test%5B3%5D=c&action=Go Does anybody have any idea as to why this is happening? I'm freaking out on this one, it has cost me so much time already... • Certain web pages are suddenly not rendering properly in FireFox

  I am using FireFox 3.6.3. I noticed in the last couple of days that several webpages which I visit regularly are not rendering properly. A lot of the text is overlapping with other text and it basically looks like the style sheet is completely screwed up. I have tried disabling all of my Add-Ons and it doesn't make a difference. When I use Coral IE Tab to render the pages using IE they display without any problems. The websites which are not rending properly for me are: The Age Google Reader One interesting thing I noticed is that if I modify the Google Reader URL to not use SSL (i.e. change https to http) it renders without any issues. However, The Age website is not using SSL, and that still doesn't render properly. I have also disabled my Proxy Server (I normally use one at work) but this doesn't make a difference either.

• My Mac is slow but don't know what's slowing it down

  My Mac (Macbook Pro) is sometimes slow doing basic tasks, like browsing the web or something like that. If I open Activity Monitor, I have (maybe) one program that is about 10 % CPU, others are below 1 %. My CPU usage is not full. I still have more than 2 GB of free memory (out of 5 GB). There is no heavy I/O activity like copying files. My open programs are Google Chrome (6 tabs, none of which are in some way (flash, many DOM objects, Javascript) have IMO, except maybe Gmail), Activity Monitor, Finder, Sublime Text 2 (text editor) and iTerm (terminal). What is causing the slowdown? "Slow" being: taking time to write these characters (I press the keyboard keys but there is a delay before I see them on the screen), changing tabs or programs, etc.

Normally Google can answer my questions, but in this case I'm coming up blank. If I'm asking this in the wrong forum, please let me know. The text is talking about RADIUS accounting functionality. It says that when there are many (more than 200) authenticated terminals, if a command is issued to forcibly clear the terminals, "sliding to the next RADIUS accounting server may occur" -- the original text literally says "RADIUS accounting server-slide". I think I can basically understand what they are getting at in terms of meaning, but I would like to know whether this is the correct expression to use. I get the impression from my inability to find it simply by Googling that perhaps it's described differently in English.

I looked around and I found many sites with lists of expired domain names or domain names that will expire soon, but that's not what I need, I need a list of CURRENTLY REGISTERED domain names. The closest I found was this site (hxxp://www.list-of-domains.org/), but what I'm looking for ideally is just a plain list of registered domains and not some web links split across many pages full with ads and no text file. I know it's possible, after all how do these sites get the list of domains that they use? Where can I find such a list?

• HP Photosmart 7450 Prints Noise On Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

  I have received a working (in its last location) HP Photosmart 7450 printer. I connected it up to my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit workstation, and the driver was (apparently) installed. The problem is that whenever I try to print from it -- test page, text from notepad, picture, whatever -- it spins through a half dozen sheets of paper, some of which have fractions of text on them, but most of which are either blank or have line noise printed on them. Noise similar to what was printed out on ye olde laserjet printers when the postscript interpreter failed. HP's web site only has a "use the included driver in Windows 7, be happy" instruction. The driver has been removed and added several times. The printer was previously attached to a XP Home computer and worked correctly without incident. Does anyone have any ideas for troubleshooting before I drop this printer in the river?

We have a very old application based on Omnis7 that needs to create and read/write files on drive C: when running as a restricted user. In Windows XP to give this permission is quite trivial using cacls. cacls C:\ /G Everyone:(C) The equivalent icacls in Windows 7 will not work. icacls C:\ /Grant Everyone:(M) I have also tried the following. icacls C:\ /Grant Everyone:(F) icacls C:\ /Grant Domain\user:(F) trying to create file with a restricted user gives this C:\>copy nul text.txt Access is denied. 0 file(s) copied. After applying the icacls permissions above the result changes to this. C:\>copy nul text.txt A required privilege is not held by the client. 0 file(s) copied. Is this an issue with the way I am applying the permissions? Or is Window 7 being extremely strict?

  (i'm just trying to find what am I missing...) Assuming John have a clear text message , he can create a regular hash ( like md5 , or sha256) and then encrypt the message. John can now send Paul the message + its (clear text)hash and Paul can know if the message was altered. ( decrypt and then compare hashes). Even if an attacker can change the encrpyted data ( without decrypt) - - when paul will open the message - and recalc the hash - it wont generate the same hash as the one john sent him. so why do we need hash by key ?

  Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) are blocked (or polluted) by all ISPs available to me (and DNS by ISPs just return wrong answers for some sensitive sites!!), and it is said that if we change DNS from UDP onto TCP, the problem can be temporarily solved. • Apache on Win32: Slow Transfers of single, static files in HTTP, fast in HTTPS

  I have a weird problem with Apache 2.2.15 on Windows 2000 Server SP4. Basically, I am trying to serve larger static files, images, videos etc. The download seems to be capped at around 550kB/s even over 100Mbit LAN. I tried other protocols (FTP/FTPS/FTP+ES/SCP/SMB), and they are all in the multi-megabyte range. The strangest thing is that, when using Apache with HTTPS instead of HTTP, it serves very fast, around 2.7MByte/s! I also tried the AnalogX SimpleWWW server just to test the plain HTTP speed of it, and it gave me a healthy 3.3Mbyte/s. I am at a total loss here. I searched the web, and tried to change the following Apache configuration directives in httpd.conf, one at a time, mostly to no avail at all: SendBufferSize 1048576 #(tried multiples of that too, up to 100Mbytes) EnableSendfile Off #(minor performance boost) EnableMMAP Off Win32DisableAcceptEx HostnameLookups Off #(default) I also tried to tune the following registry parameters, setting their values to 4194304 in decimal (they are REG_DWORD), and rebooting afterwards: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters\DefaultReceiveWindow HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters\DefaultSendWindow Additionally, I tried to install mod_bw, which sets the event timer precision to 1ms, and allows for bandwidth throttling. According to some people it boosts static file serving performance when set to unlimited bandwidth for everybody. Unfortunately, it did nothing for me. So: AnalogX HTTP: 3300kB/s Gene6 FTPD, plain: 3500kB/s Gene6 FTPD, Implicit and Explicit SSL, AES256 Cipher: 1800-2000kB/s freeSSHD: 1100kB/s SMB shared folder: about 3000kB/s Apache HTTP, plain: 550kB/s Apache HTTPS: 2700kB/s Clients that were used in the bandwidth testing: Internet Explorer 8 (HTTP, HTTPS) Firefox 8 (HTTP, HTTPS) Chrome 13 (HTTP, HTTPS) Opera 11.60 (HTTP, HTTPS) wget under CygWin (HTTP, HTTPS) FileZilla (FTP, FTPS, FTP+ES, SFTP) Windows Explorer (SMB) Generally, transfer speeds are not too high, but that's because the server machine is an old quad Pentium Pro 200MHz machine with 2GB RAM. However, I would like Apache to serve at at least 2Mbyte/s instead of 550kB/s, and that already works with HTTPS easily, so I fail to see why plain HTTP is so crippled. I am using a Kerio Winroute Firewall, but no Throttling and no special filters peeking into HTTP traffic, just the plain Firewall functionality for blocking/allowing connections. The Apache error.log (Loglevel info) shows no warnings, no errors. Also nothing strange to be seen in access.log. I have already stripped down my httpd.conf to the bare minimum just to make sure nothing is interfering, but that didn't help either. If you have any idea, help would be greatly appreciated, since I am totally out of ideas! Thanks! Edit: I have now tried a newer Apache 2.2.21 to see if it makes any difference. However, the behaviour is exactly the same. Edit 2: KM01 has requested a sniff on the HTTP headers, so here comes the LiveHTTPHeaders output (an extension to Firefox). The Output is generated on downloading a single file called "elephantsdream_source.264", which is an H.264/AVC elementary video stream under an Open Source license. I have taken the freedom to edit the URL, removing folders and changing the actual servers domain name to www.mydomain.com. • ubuntu 10.04 console resolution

  I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my HP Pavilion dv6000 After I installed it, the text in the console (when I press ALT+F1) was small and the console had a good resolution (I think the same as my LCD, 1280x800). Also, at boot, the "Ubuntu" logo was small and centered in the middle of the screen. That was good. After that, I installed the nVidia driver via the "System-Administration-Hardware drivers" screen. After the driver was installed, the text in the console was larger and more pixelated, and also the "Ubuntu" logo was much larger and looked uglier because it was pixelated. Can anyone help me change the resolution in the console and boot screen back to what it was before I installed the nVidia driver?

• Nokia backup on a Mac

  Hi there! As I have to bring my phone to a shop for repair, I want to backup my contacts, calenders and text-messages. My Nokia connects perfectly through Bluetooth with iSync. One baddy, however is that text-messages are nowhere to be found or for the matter of fact, impossible to backup from the phone using iSync. Is there a graceful, free application for Mac that would be able to backup (and later restore) the messages on my phone? The worst possible scenario would include me to write a script that uses the Hayes command set and kermit-ize all SMS's (hundreds at least), so a nice click-and-play solution would be nice to know about. I don't consider applications like Parallel/CrossOver as a solution, as PC Suite is quite buggy with those (which does have the functionality to backup SMS and e-mail). Many thanks!

• Free Google Docs alternative compatible with Opera

  Well gDocs isn't working ok, too many bugs and it's pretty slow (especially when saving documents). I have tried several alternatives: - Zoho - they say it's not compatible with Opera and it;s true - you even can't CTRL+V text - Buzzword - it's really slow, and some functions don't work properly (on all browsers) for example "increase indent" increases a random text indent - Etherpad - was taken over by google and is shut down - Peepel - it's a cool thing, almost a free virtual desktop in a browser but it's buggy - a saved a document, tried to open it end an error occured. the document was lost - OpenGoo - went commercial At the moment I'm testing ThinkFree Online - it'a a bit slow (Java :P) and some minor things don't work (like drag a toolbar) but it has cool functionalities (almost like OpenOffice! which I use at home), it actually works with opera (create, save, edit document). Maybe I'll try Scribd but is it a office/share platform? any other worth trying??

• Disable creation of appointment when typing into Outlook calendar

  Outlook (both 2010 and 2007) has a "feature" that creates an appointment if I type some text while the calendar window has focus. This keeps biting me every now and then when I erroneously have focus on the calendar window and start typing. To me, this feature is twice as annoying: There is no easy way to escape out of it - I end up using mouse to select the newly created bogus event and then to delete it. Sometimes, if the focus is on an already existing event, such spurious typing changes the text without an easy way to undo. Question: is there a way to make Outlook stop creating/modifying events upon typing, forcing me instead to double click an event or Ctrl-N in order to process my input?

• iMessage program for Windows or similar?

  iMessage (desktop app) is only for OS X and it's not clear if they'll bring it to Windows. I'd like to send text messages or iMessage texts using my computer. I have an iPhone iOS 5, jailbroken. • Diffing file contents

  I have two plain text files, each file is containing a list of strings sorted alphabetically with one string per line. I want to diff the files and have an output of all strings that exist only in file2. Preferabbly I want the operation to be possible without any 3rd party tools, or with a minimum of installations of tools that is "normal" to find in a windows command line environment, such as GNU Diffutils, Powershell, etc. The output should be in text form (file or as command line output). Example: File 1 contents: A C D File 2 contents: A B C E Result wanted: B E
