• How can I set up private, per-user sections on Joomla?

  For this weekend's GiveCamp project, my team has been tasked with adding some functionality to an existing Joomla-powered website for a non-profit. A certain type of user will login, and have access to a personal area where they can upload files, check for messages, see tasks that have been assigned, etc. Each user would have their own area. They would not be creating pages, and their information would only be visible to themselves (or a site-administrator, of course. No sort of weird HIPAA privacy involved). None of us have worked with Joomla before, but we'd like to help this non-profit. We're not sure if we're searching using the wrong terms, or if we're just not finding it. Is such a solution possible in Joomla? And/or are we better off building some standalone solution that interfaces with the same mySQL database as Joomla?

• Problem using python QPID and gevent together [closed]

  I have a python script that pulls messages from an Apache QPID queue, and then uses gevent to perform (IO-bound) tasks on those messages in parallel. The queue that this script pulls from was recently changed: I suspect the version of the C++ QPID broker changed, although I cannot verify this at the present time. Now, my process deadlocks and hangs upon QPID queue creation. I strongly suspect that this is a result of an incompatibility with gevent, although I have not done the work yet to produce a minimal example to demonstrate the problem. (Next on my list). Does anybody else have experience of getting gevent and QPID to work together? or Has anybody else seen the same issues?

I have pasted in the standard code for including Google Analytics as an example, and I have seen the same pattern used in other places. • Is the Windows Start button an example of poor mapping? [migrated]

  In my recent course on HCI, I've been told that start button on Windows systems is an example of poor mapping. The reason for that, as explained in materials, is that it doesn't start anything, but rather reveals a menu. I think that this is only valid if you approaching this from low level of abstraction (meaning that the button must start something). If you on the other hand take a view on this from higher level of abstraction, as of "Place where I start most of my tasks", i.e. This is the place where you are start*ing the task of switching off your computer This is the place where you are start*ing the task of searching for something on your computer This is the place where you are start*ing the task of running a program This is the place where you are start*ing the task ... Then I think it makes perfect sense and has perfect mapping. Is this a sensible interpretation?

  I'm currently maintain a large project with more than 100000 LOC. The code use the MFC as its framework, in genral, it only has interface part which heavily use the mfc api and a business logic part which full of bad code, confusing logic. The company has some small features delivered to the customer each year(most features are adding code to exisiting project, finding some reference of some api or variable and it' s no different with fixing 3-4 bugs ), most of the tasks are to resove issue and optimize performance . Like other company with maintaining position, it value people who knows much logic about its product. There are people who can quickly finish the job on such project, is it worth to train myself like such a programmer? Is there benifits to work on such project for a long time?

  I am a student and have obtained a one year placement at a business that develops an e-commerce system using C#, HTML, WPF, javascript, ASP and more. Although I do have a little bit of knowledge, I find myself being assigned a lot of tasks that are beyond me and even when I ask for help, the response I get is often cryptic to me. I stare at as much code as possible to just try and "throw myself into it" but I often just get lost in the code I like to consider myself a fast learner and I am damn determined to be a good programmer. I would just like to ask if there are some tips for me to catch up as quick as possible? I don't want to be a nuisance and sit here and ask for help 24/7. I just want to crack on!

They give you javascript code that you embed in your pages (whichever event you wish to track) and voila..you're done. I have written a native application for Android phones, which is actually an adaptation of the actual web site. Now, I am required to setup Analytics and tracking for this native application. Question: How to do setup a native application for Analytics? We have Java Script code(not Google Analytics but for some other engine) that works for the original web site. Is there a way to incorporate that in the native application? I know Android supports Java Script via WebViews(Webkit);my application does not have webviews, it is native! • How can I make refactoring a priority for my team?

  The codebase I work with daily has no automated tests, inconsistent naming and tons of comments like "Why is this here?", "Not sure if this is needed" or "This method isn't named right" and the code is littered with "Changelogs" despite the fact we use source control. Suffice it to say, our codebase could use refactoring. We always have tasks to fix bugs or add new features, so no time is put aside to refactor code to be better and more modular, and it doesn't seem to be a high priority. How can I demonstrate the value of refactoring such that it gets added to our task lists? Is it worth it to just refactor as I go, asking for forgiveness rather than permission?

  I always use Google translate and paste back the the results in Vim. But for some reason Google translate also screws up the HTML tags around the content I want to translate. Is there a solution for this? For instance, the double quotes are translated to Chinese-cased double quotes: 'pictures_h2'=>“??????????   Context: I downloaded a file (Audirvana 0.7.1.zip) from code.google to my Macbook Pro (Mac OS X 10.6.6). (current url: http://code.google.com/p/audirvana/downloads/detail?name=Audirvana%200.7.1.zip&can=2&q= ) I wanted to verify the checksum, which for that particular file is posted as 862456662a11e2f386ff0b24fdabcb4f6c1c446a (SHA-1). git hash-object gave me a different hash, but openssl sha1 returned the expected 862456662a11e2f386ff0b24fdabcb4f6c1c446a. The following experiment seems to rule out any possible download corruption or newline differences and to indicate that there are actually two different algorithms at play: $ echo A > foo.txt $ cat foo.txt A $ git hash-object foo.txt f70f10e4db19068f79bc43844b49f3eece45c4e8 $ openssl sha1 foo.txt SHA1(foo.txt)= 7d157d7c000ae27db146575c08ce30df893d3a64 What's going on?

• Is it normal to sometimes take a while to get even basic things working in software development?

  This is a little hard to explain because it's a really generic question, but bear with me... I find that when I am doing or recreating basic things from scratch (i.e. without the help of libraries), sometimes it feels as though I'm taking much more time to do the task than is actually needed. I am not new to programming or development & design concepts and have worked extensively with around 9 languages and various platforms and paradigms over 5/6 years. Although I don't yet have any academic qualification for programming and have learned almost exclusively from the Internet, I have been told that the quality of my code is excellent by those with qualifications. So, I don't think I'm a bad programmer because I really love doing it and working with software architecture, but maybe I'm slow? Or is it normal to take sometimes longer than it seems necessary to do basic tasks?
