  • How to communicate between service controller and a service/daemon?

    It is easy to display the status of a Windows service or to control it (start/stop) from a GUI application but the question if how about receiving/sending notifications from the service? Like: service telling to the user monitoring it that it needs attention. Please consider that you can have several controllers started at any time in a multi-user environment. Do you know an example(open source) for this kind of communication? Extra points for a platform independent solution :)

  • Get the path to Django itself

    I've got some code that runs on every (nearly) every admin request but doesn't have access to the 'request' object. I need to find the path to Django installation. I could do: import django django_path = django.__file__ but that seems rather wasteful in the middle of a request. Does putting the import at the start of the module waste memory? I'm fairly sure I'm missing an obvious trick here.

  • UIVIewController not released when view is dismissed

    I have a main view, mainWindow, which presents a couple of buttons. Both buttons create a new UIViewController (mapViewController), but one will start a game and the other will resume it. Both buttons are linked via StoryBoard to the same View. They are segued to modal views as I'm not using the NavigationController. So in a typical game, if a person starts a game, but then goes back to the main menu, he triggers: [self dismissViewControllerAnimated:YES completion:nil ]; to return to the main menu. I would assume the view controller is released at this point. The user resumes the game with the second button by opening another instance of mapViewController. What is happening, tho, is some touch events will trigger methods on the original instance (and write status updates to them - therefore invisible to the current view). When I put a breakpoint in the mapViewController code, I can see the instance will be one or the other (one of which should be released). I have tried putting a delegate to the mainWindow clearing the view: [self.delegate clearMapView]; where in the mainWindow - (void) clearMapView{ gameWindow = nil; } I have also tried self.view=nil; in the mapViewController. The mapViewController code contains MVC code, where the model is static. I wonder if this may prevent ARC from releasing the view. The model.m contains: static CanShieldModel *sharedInstance; + (CanShieldModel *) sharedModel { @synchronized(self) { if (!sharedInstance) sharedInstance = [[CanShieldModel alloc] init]; return sharedInstance; } return sharedInstance; } Another post which may have a lead, but so far not successful, is UIViewController not being released when popped I have in ViewDidLoad: // checks to see if app goes inactive - saves. What resources would you suggest for getting up-to-date on the current state of java technologies? How about learning how to approach DRY (don't repeat yourself) without the use of metaprogramming? Or how to approach various scenarios where a ruby developer is used to passing in a function (proc/lambda/block) as an argument (callbacks, etc)?

  • How can I ignore .svn directories when using sloccount?

    I'm trying to use sloccount from within hudson to gather statistics on our codebase, however by default sloccount collects information on all files, even those which are "hidden" (eg. .hideme). This means the statistics are skewed since they include numbers from files within the .svn directories. Is there any way I can tell sloccount to correctly ignore any files/directories which start with a .?

    Why do build servers poll for changes instead of SVN firing off an event (or a post-commit step) that tells the build server to start a build? It seems terribly inefficient to poll for changes, especially when the number of projects increases and the polling period is set to a very low value (for example, 30 seconds).

  • Has anyone tried the "objectify" library for Google App Engine?

    I was using JDO for my google app engine project but got fed up with the additional 5 seconds it adds to my cold start time. I was planning on just writing stuff directly to the database with the low level datastore api, but then I came accross the objectify project ( http://code.google.com/p/objectify-appengine/ ). Apparently its a super light wrapper above the low level api. Does anyone have experiences with this library that they could share?

  • Is there a Netbeans equivalent to Eclipse's Workspace

    I enjoy using Netbeans, especially for development with Maven, however, I've found recently that I've been working with three different branches of the same code base in different parts of the development cycle. One of the things that Eclipse can do, is separate the projects into different workspaces, so i can simply start Eclipse with the workspace containing my Maven projects in the production patch branch or the trunk depending upon what I need to be working on. I'd love to accomplish this in Netbeans, but haven't found a way to do so. Any ideas?
