  • Representation of a DateTime as the local to remote user

    - by TwoSecondsBefore
Hello! I was confused in the problem of time zones. I am writing a web application that will contain some news with dates of publication, and I want the client to see the date of publication of the news in the form of corresponding local time. However, I do not know in which time zone the client is located. I have three questions. I have to ask just in case: does DateTimeOffset.UtcNow always returns the correct UTC date and time, regardless of whether the server is dependent on daylight savings time? For example, if the first time I get the value of this property for two minutes before daylight savings time (or before the transition from daylight saving time back) and the second time in 2 minutes after the transfer, whether the value of properties in all cases differ by only 4 minutes? Or here require any further logic? (Question #1) Please see the following example and tell me what you think. I posted the news on the site. I assume that DateTimeOffset.UtcNow takes into account the time zone of the server and the daylight savings time, and so I immediately get the correct UTC server time when pressing the button "Submit". I write this value to a MS SQL database in the field of type datetime2(0). Then the user opens a page with news and no matter how long after publication. This may occur even after many years. I did not ask him to enter his time zone. Instead, I get the offset of his current local time from UTC using the javascript function following way: function GetUserTimezoneOffset() { var offset = new Date().getTimezoneOffset(); return offset; } Next I make the calculation of the date and time of publication, which will show the user: public static DateTime Get_Publication_Date_In_User_Local_DateTime( DateTime Publication_Utc_Date_Time_From_DataBase, int User_Time_Zone_Offset_Returned_by_Javascript) { int userTimezoneOffset = User_Time_Zone_Offset_Returned_by_Javascript; // For // example Javascript returns a value equal to -300, which means the // current user's time differs from UTC to 300 minutes. Ie offset // is UTC +6. In this case, it may be the time zone UTC +5 which // currently operates summer time or UTC +6 which currently operates the // standard time. // Right? (Question #2) DateTimeOffset utcPublicationDateTime = new DateTimeOffset(Publication_Utc_Date_Time_From_DataBase, new TimeSpan(0)); // get an instance of type DateTimeOffset for the // date and time of publication for further calculations DateTimeOffset publication_DateTime_In_User_Local_DateTime = utcPublicationDateTime.ToOffset(new TimeSpan(0, - userTimezoneOffset, 0)); return publication_DateTime_In_User_Local_DateTime.DateTime;// return to user } Is the value obtained correct? Is this the right approach to solving this problem? (Question #3)

  • SQL Cartesian product joining table to itself and inserting into existing table

    - by Emma
    I am working in phpMyadmin using SQL. I want to take the primary key (EntryID) from TableA and create a cartesian product (if I am using the term correctly) in TableB (empty table already created) for all entries which share the same value for FieldB in TableA, except where TableA.EntryID equals TableA.EntryID So, for example, if the values in TableA were: TableA.EntryID TableA.FieldB 1 23 2 23 3 23 4 25 5 25 6 25 The result in TableB would be: Primary key EntryID1 EntryID2 FieldD (Default or manually entered) 1 1 2 Default value 2 1 3 Default value 3 2 1 Default value 4 2 3 Default value 5 3 1 Default value 6 3 2 Default value 7 4 5 Default value 8 4 6 Default value 9 5 4 Default value 10 5 6 Default value 11 6 4 Default value 12 6 5 Default value I am used to working in Access and this is the first query I have attempted in SQL. I started trying to work out the query and got this far. I know it's not right yet, as I’m still trying to get used to the syntax and pieced this together from various articles I found online. In particular, I wasn’t sure where the INSERT INTO text went (to create what would be an Append Query in Access). SELECT EntryID FROM TableA.EntryID TableA.EntryID WHERE TableA.FieldB=TableA.FieldB TableA.EntryID<>TableA.EntryID INSERT INTO TableB.EntryID1 TableB.EntryID2 After I've got that query right, I need to do a TRIGGER query (I think), so if an entry changes it's value in TableA.FieldB (changing it’s membership of that grouping to another grouping), the cartesian product will be re-run on THAT entry, unless TableB.FieldD = valueA or valueB (manually entered values). I have been using the Designer Tab. Does there have to be a relationship link between TableA and TableB. If so, would it be two links from the EntryID Primary Key in TableA, one to each EntryID in TableB? I assume this would not work because they are numbered EntryID1 and EntryID2 and the name needs to be the same to set up a relationship? If you can offer any suggestions, I would be very grateful. Research: http://www.fluffycat.com/SQL/Cartesian-Joins/ Cartesian Join example two Q: You said you can have a Cartesian join by joining a table to itself. Show that! Select * From Film_Table T1, Film_Table T2;

  • PHP difference between notice and warning

    - by Stegeman
When writing code errors, warnings and notices can occur. I know the idea behind errors. I suppose a warning is there to inform you about something that can cause an error, but isn't a notice exaclty the same? I suppose a notice is not a message of something doing right ;). It's just a bit confusing to me. Can anybody tell the difference between those two and the way these messages should be treated.

  • What is the best approach of creating a login System?

    - by Starx
I am always wondering that the login systems I have created is vulnerable to attacks or not. As many other programmers I also use sessions to hold a specific token token to know the login status. Cookies to hold the username or even sometime saved status. What I am wondering is, Is this the right way? Is there any approach better that this?

  • Django admin - remove field if editing an object

    - by John McCollum
I have a model which is accessible through the Django admin area, something like the following: # model class Foo(models.Model): field_a = models.CharField(max_length=100) field_b = models.CharField(max_length=100) # admin.py class FooAdmin(admin.ModelAdmin): pass Let's say that I want to show field_a and field_b if the user is adding an object, but only field_a if the user is editing an object. Is there a simple way to do this, perhaps using the fields attribute? If if comes to it, I could hack a JavaScript solution, but it doesn't feel right to do that at all!

    - by Jevgenij Nekrasov
Let's say I have composite hierarchical structure. Each object in the structure has child collection of the same objects. Each object has XPath property, which stores the exact xpath to the element inside XML file. Right now I am trying to create an extension, which can generate XML string from that hierarchical structure, but first I want to make some sort of research what is the most efficient way to do that? ant what is the easiest way?

  • grails mockFor closure wierdness

    - by hvgotcodes
Right, so when I set up my mock using the testing plugin's mockFor method, I expect a method that returns null. If I do myControl.demand.theMethod {return null} in the debugger, the value that I set the 'theMethod' call result to is some closure in the debugger. If I do myControl.demand.theMethod {->return null} the value is null, as expected. I dont understand the difference....

  • how to return NULL for double function with Intel C compiler?

    - by Derek
I have some code that I am porting from an SGI system using the MIPS compiler. It has functions that are declared to have double return type. If the function can't find the right double, those functions return "NULL" The intel C compiler does not like this, but I was trying to see if there is a compiler option to enable this "feature" so that I can compile without changing code. I checked the man page, and can't seem to find it. Thanks

Once that is done, by right, i should be able to include the .h file inside the dll from my application. But i'm unable to do so. I'm testing with the dll here: http://www.flipcode.com/archives/Creating_And_Using_DLLs.shtml Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

  • new items on GRUB screen in ubuntu/linux

    - by artsince
I regularly update my ubuntu (10.04), and new minor versions keep accumulating on the GRUB screen. Right now I have 5 different versions listed on the GRUB, even though I always select the latest version to work with. Am I supposed to do anything to get rid of the old version references? Do these old versions affect disk space/performance?
