• bash and arithmetic comparison: double quotes or not?

  when comparing two integers in bash, do we have to put double quotes ? In the official document http://tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/comparison-ops.html I can read that double quotes should appear every time... But what is the differences in the following examples: [ "$VAR" -eq "1" ] [ $VAR -eq "1" ] [ "$VAR" -eq 1 ] [ $VAR -eq 1 ] As I am curious, a took a look at Ubuntu init scripts in /etc/init.d and there are many usage of arithmetic comparison in it, at least [ "$VAR" -eq "1" ] and [ $VAR -eq 1 ] are used... but it seems no one really "knows" what is the official way to do it. I found the following document: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929847 - How to enable computer-only authentication for a 802.1X-based network in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008, and in Windows XP Service Pack 3 But unforunately the needed command "netsh wlan" is not available in Windows XP - "Note Windows XP SP3 and earlier versions of Windows XP do not support the netsh wlan command." • Disallow all user agents except one using .htaccess?

  I've been struggling to get this .htaccess working. The aim is to disallow all user agents besides my app. The app sends a GET request with a user agent of lets say 'AcmeUpdater'. Whenever I try to navigate to any file in the folder, I get a 500 - Internal Server Error. Here are the rules I'm using: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !^KMUpdaterClient* RewriteRule .* - [F,L] </IfModule> I have updated the .htaccess file as suggested in the answer by Nick, and restarted Apache. After trying a couple of different things, it seems that just the presence of a .htaccess is causing the 500 error. I'm getting nothing in the error logs. The .htaccess file at the document root looks like the following: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> Options +FollowSymLinks ErrorDocument 404 /index.php?error=404 RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d </IfModule> So I realised that the error logs were in chronological order rather than the reverse chronological I expected (Oops!). The error I'm getting is: </IfModule> without matching <IfModule> section. I removed the </IfModule> and still I get that error. Ideas?

• SQL Prompt Easter Egg

  Having Red Gate's SQL Prompt installed with SQL Server Management Studio has saved me many headaches over the years of its use. It is extremely nice to type in a table name and see not only the column names, but also their data types and identification of primary keys. Another cool feature is the built-in short cut scripts that are included toward the bottom of the suggestion box. An example of these short cut scripts would be to type in the letters  cv and then hit enter and the following template for CREATE VIEW will appear: CREATE VIEW --WITH ENCRYPTION, SCHEMABINDING, VIEW_METADATA AS     SELECT /* query specification */ -- WITH CHECK OPTION GO These scripts are great, and on occasion rather humorous. Recently, I was writing an UPDATE statement that would update a derived and aliased set of data in . An example of such a statement is as follows: UPDATE y SET a.[FieldA] = b.[FieldB] FROM     (         SELECT             a.[FieldA]             ,b.[FieldB]         FROM             [MyTableA] a             INNER JOIN [MyTableB] b                 ON a.[PKA] = b.[PKB]     ) y; Upon typing the UPDATE y portion I hit enter and the expression "A A A A R G H !" appeared resulting in an unexpected burst of laughter. With a dash of curiosity and a pinch of research I discovered that at the bottom of the SQL Prompt suggestion box resides a short cut script called "yell", which is described as "Vent your frustration". Another humorous short cut script is "neo", which is described as "-- I know Kung-Fu". All is required for these to activate is to type the first letter and hit enter. I wonder if there are any undocumented ones?

  I have this HUGELY irritating problem on Windows 7 (x64). Whenever I click on ANY link (that exists on a Word document, excel or Outlook), I get an alert box with the message: "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer" I have been scouring my settings and the internet for a solution, but to no avail. Has anybody else encounted this problem? It even happens when I click anchors in word documents i.e. I can't even click on an entry in a Table of Contents to go to the appropriate page - I get this same error then. Is this a Windows 7 thing? Anyway to turn this off?

• Mac OS X Duplex Printing Paper Handling Oddness

  I like to print on stationery with a pre-printed letterhead using the Preview.app and a duplex-capable HP PostScript (Color Laserjet 4700) printer. One would think that pre-printed stationery could be placed into one of the trays and then printed on front and reverse side. Unfortunately, the print dialog handles one and two-paged documents differently: the stationery needs to be placed differently into the tray if the document contains one page versus when it contains two pages. This is not obvious when printing on plain paper but becomes obvious once you mark, say, the upper left front corner of pages and then print different documents on them. I checked the PostScript code generated and indeed it is different for one versus two-page documents with respect to duplex printing, probably causing the difference in paper handling. Obviously this makes it difficult to print pre-printed stationery in duplex mode. I expected others to have stumbled upon this but could not find specific help so far. Any ideas? This is on OS X 10.6 and I checked two different printers.

• Request Tracker 4.x on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have a Ubuntu 12.04 server installed on my machine. I am trying to install request-tracker4. Here's what I have done so far : a) Installed request-tracker via "sudo apt-get install request-tracker4" b) I then tried configuring RT_SiteConfig.pm in /etc/request-tracker4 but then ran into problems in populating the MySQL database. c) I then did sudo dpkg-reconfigure request-tracker4 d) It solved my problems of not being able to populate / setup mysql etc. e) Now, I am trying to setup rt under www.mydomain.com/rt I have read various how-to's and bestpractical's own guides but I am not very much a expert in Apache configurations so stuck. My Current Ubuntu 12.04 server setup: Apache2, Fastcgi installed (checked in /etc/apache2/mods-enabled Web Server document root is default /var/www/ Web user www-data Question is : 1 ) Where and What shall I put in Apache configuration to start using RT via the web-interface ? I have seen two files in /etc/request-tracker4/ apache2-fastcgi.conf and apache2-fcgid.conf I even tried making a ln -s apache2-fastcgi.conf /etc/apache2/conf.d but when I tried opening that file in root while in the conf.d directory it said too many levels. Any request tracker experts on ubuntu ?:-) Your help will be very useful and appreciated Thanks Please let me know if you need further info !

• Is ASP.NET MVC completely (and exclusively) based on conventions?

  --TL;DR Is there a "Hello World!" ASP.NET MVC tutorial out there that doesn't rely on conventions and "stock" projects? Is it even possible to take advantage of the technology without reusing the default file structure, and start from a single "hello_world.asp" file or something (like in PHP)? Am I completely mistaken and I should be looking somewhere else, maybe this? I'm interested in the MVC framework, not Web Forms --Background I've played a bit with PHP in the past, just for fun, and now I'm back to it since web development became relevant for me once again. I'm no professional, but I try to gain as much knowledge and control over the technology I'm working with as possible. I'm using Visual Studio 2012 for C# - my "desktop" language of choice - and since I got the Professional Edition from Dreamspark, the Web Development Tools are available, including ASP.NET MVC 4. I won't touch Web Forms, but the MVC Framework got my attention because the MVC pattern is something I can really relate to, since it provides the control I want but... not quite. Learning PHP was easy - and right form the start I could just create a "hello_world.php" file and just do something like this for immediate results: <!-- file: hello_world.php --> <?php> echo "Hello World!"; <?> But I couldn't find a single ASP.NET (MVC) tutorial out there (I'll be sure to buy one of the upcoming MVC 4 books, only a month away or so) that would start like that. They all start with a sample project, building up knowledge from the basics and heavily using conventions as they go along. Which is fine, I suppose, but it's now the best way for me to learn things. Even the "Empty" project template for a new ASP.NET MVC 4 Application in VS2012 is not empty at all: several files and folders are created for you - much like a new C# desktop application project, but with C# I can in fact start from scratch, creating the project structure myself. It is not the case with PHP: I can choose from a plethora of different MVC frameworks I can just create my own framework I can just skip frameworks altogether, and toss random PHP along with my HTML on a single file and make it work I understand the framework needs to establish some rules, but what if I just want to create a single page website with some C# logic behind it? Do I really need to create a whole bloat of files and folders for the sake of convention? Also, please understand that I haven't gotten far on any of those tutorials mainly because of this reason, but, if that's the only way to do it, I'll go for it using one of the books I've mentioned before. This is my first contact with ASP.NET but from the few comparisons I've read, I believe I should stay the hell away from Web Forms. Thank you. • Best option for PDF viewer embedded in web app

  I have a web app that needs to be able to display a PDF. It needs to allow the user to page through the PDF, and my application needs to be able to know which page is currently being viewed, because other aspects of the web app will change based on the current page. Ideally it would not be dependent on the client having Adobe Reader but I could probably support that dependency. What are my best options for this? My application stack consists of ASP.NET 4 along with optionally Silverlight 5. Also, I could use something that is client-side based as well using JavaScript / HTML if such a thing exists. I found ComponentOne's offering for this and that seems like the leading candidate at this point, but I want to know if there are other options I should consider. Edit: Per Fosco's comment, converting the PDF to another format (such as HTML) might be an option, as long as I could tie back parts of the converted document to the original PDF page #s. Another note: this has to run entirely on our servers. It would not be acceptable to use a third-party service to view the PDFs.

• Preventing a confirmation pop-up when updating fields in Word

  In Word 2007, an obvious candidate for updating all the fields in a range is myrange.Fields.Update But if the range is the element of ActiveDocument.StoryRanges corresponding to the footnotes, endnotes or comments, this triggers a confirmation pop-up “Word cannot undo this action. Do you want to continue?” What is this pop-up telling me about? How do I get rid of it (if it's not important)? An obvious workaround is to iterate over the fields and call each field's Update method. It doesn't fire up that question.   In the company where I work, we are starting to plan to be compliant to the software development life cycle. We already have, wiki, vcs system, bug tracking system, and a continuous integration system. The next step we want to have is to start to manage, in a structured way, software requirements. We dont want to use a wiki or shared documentation because we have many input (developer, manager, commercial, security analyst and other) and we dont want to handle proliferation of .doc around the network share. We are trying to search and we hope we can find and use a FOSS software to manage all this things. We have about 30 people, and don't have a budget for commercial software. We need a free solution for requirements management. • Using Apache2 to set up a basic webpage

  I am having a problem with a test page I set up for my website. The config file (index.html) looks like this <html> <head> <title>Welcome to website.net!</title> </head> <body> <h1>Success! The website.net virtual host is working!</h1> </body> </html> Which should display a page like this in my browser when I navigate to www.mywebsite.net Welcome to website.net! Success! The website.net virtual host is working! However I get a 403 "forbidden" error when I navigate to the page. What am I missing? I have the directory installed on /var/www/mywebsite.net/public_html/index.html I have the permissions of the /var/www directory set to 755 so that others can read and exicute it but it does not seem to be working. I also have port 80 open on my iptable. The server is a VPS server if that makes a difference however I have added a DNS record for the ip address. Any help is appreciated! • My browsers won't use my full screen resolution, IE different

  My screen resolution is actually 3200x1800, but when I'm in a browser it acts like I have a smaller resolution. How do I get my browsers to use my full resolution? On Chrome it's using 1280x720, and on IE it's using 1600x900. According to whatismyscreenresolution.com, which is showing different values for different browsers. I took a screenshot of them and verified that my resolution is 3200x1800 as that is the pixels in the bitmap. I'm on a laptop with no monitor plugged in. My zoom in both browsers is at 100%. I've tried zooming out below 100% but then the text is unreadable and pixellated. I've tried restarting. Windows 8.1. I've tried the chrome extension OptiZoom and it does nothing. document.body.clientWidth gives 1247, and I want it to give 3200.

• Getting away from a customized Magento 1.4 installation - Magento 1.6, OpenCart, or others?

  I'm dealing with a Magento 1.4.0.0 Community Edition installation with various undocumented changes to the core (mostly integration with an ERP system), an outdated Sweet Tooth Points & Rewards module and some custom payment providers. It also doubles as a mediocre blogging/CMS system. It has one store each for 3 different languages, with about 40 product categories for a few hundred products. [rant] With no prior experience with any PHP e-commerce systems, I find it very difficult to work with. I attempted to install Magento 1.4.0.0 on my local WAMP dev machine, it installs fine, but the main page or search do not show any products no matter what I do in the backend admin panel. I don't know what's wrong with it, and whatever information I googled is either too old or too new from Magento 1.4. Later I'm given FTP access to the testing server, which neither my manager or I have permission to install XDebug on, as apparantly it runs on the same server as the production server (yikes). Trying to learn how Magento works is torture. I spent a week trying to add some fields into the Onepage Checkout before giving up and went to work on something else. The template system, just like the rest of Magento, is a bloated mishmash of overcomplicated directory structures, weird config xml files and EAV databases. I went into 6 different models and several content blocks in the backend just to change what the front page looks like. With little-to-none helpful and clear documentation (unlike CodeIgniter) and various breaking changes between minor point revisions which makes it hard to find useful information, Magento 1.4 is a developer killer. [/rant] The client is planning to redesign the site and has decided it might as well as move on from this unsustainable, hacky, upgrade-unfriendly, developer-unfriendly mess. Magento 1.4 is starting to show its age, with Magento 1.7 coming soon, the client is considering upgrading to Magento 1.6 or 1.7 if it has improved from 1.4. The customizations done to the current Magento 1.4 installation will have to be redone, and a new license for the Sweet Tooth Points & Rewards module will have to be bought. The client is also open to other e-commerce systems. I've looked at OpenCart and it seems to be quite developer friendly with a fairly simple structure. I found some complaints regarding its performance when the shop has thousands of categories or products, but this is not an issue with the current number of products my client has. It seems to be solid ground for easy customization to bring the rewards system and ERP integration over. What should the client upgrade to in this case?

  What the title says.. www.example.com is defined in lighttpd.conf as a virtual host: $HTTP["host"] =~ "(^|\.)example.com$" { server.document-root = "/usr/www/example.com/http" accesslog.filename = "/var/log/www/example.com/access.log" $HTTP["url"] =~ ".pl$" { cgi.assign = (".pl" => "/usr/bin/perl" ) } } However, instead of going by the files listed in index-file.names (the usual index.html, default.html, etc), i want all requests to the root of the virtual host to be forwarded to /cgi-bin/index.pl. What's the easiest/best way of doing this? This need is a special case, and will only apply to this virtualhost. Is it possible to have that particular virtualhost send a redirect in the header?

• Is there a browser extension which can copy a webpage snippet/clip/scnapshot to clipboard

  I have to save links to web pages into a google drive document. What I want is to copy simple webpage snippet, similar to the one this G+ extension button does, to clipboard. One picture and page title as a link. I was looking for many days now and I still couldn't find anything which does the same thing. • In Ubuntu 13.10, none of the hotkeys of LibreOffice works in non-English keyboard layout

  In Ubuntu 13.10, the hotkeys/shortcut-keys (Ctrl+b, Ctrl+s etc) in LibreOffice are language dependent and work in English language only. While writing in any other language (i.e. any Cyrillic and/or any Bengali etc) it's impossible to use hotkeys, they just don't do anything. Switching to English input language enable hotkeys once again. This is very frustrating as user needs to switch language to save document, to make it bold, or italic, etc. This was not experienced in Ubuntu 13.04. Steps to reproduce: System Settings Text Entry. Add another keyboard layout beside English [In my case it is Bengali (Probhat)] Now launch Writer. Switch the keyboard layout from English (US) to Bengali (Probhat) by pressing Ctrl+Space. Press Ctrl+B to change font weight to bold. Error: Font weight does not get changed. Expected: Font weight should change to bold. Note: none other system hotkeys work as expected. I.e. Ctrl+s to save, or Ctrl+b to subscript, or Ctrl+i to italic etc. Workaround: The only way is to - change the keyboard layout to English then press desired hotkey then switch keyboard layout back to Bengali. The issue is critical, as it make writer very slow for keyboard-only typing.

• Running ASP.Net MVC3 Alongside ASP.Net WebForms in the Same Project

  I previously blogged on running ASP.Net MVC in an ASP.Net WebForms project. My reference at the time was a freely-available PDF document by Scott Guthrie which covered the setup process in good detail.   As I am preparing references to share with our audience at my upcoming talk at the Deerfield Beach Coders Café on March 1st (http://www.fladotnet.com/Reg.aspx?EventID=514), I found a nice blog post by Scott Hanselman on running both ASP.Net 4.0 WebForms along with ASP.Net MVC 3.0 in the same project. You can access this article here.   Moreover, Scott later followed-up with a blog showing how to leverage NuGet to automate the setup of ASP.Net MVC3 in an existing ASP.Net WebForms project.   One frequent question that usually comes up when discussing this side-by-side setup is the loss of the convenient Visual Studio Solution Explorer context menu which enable us to easily create controllers and views with a few mouse clicks.   A good suggestion brought up in the comments section of Scott’s article presented a good work-around to this problem: Manually add the MVC Visual Studio Project Type GUID in your .sln solution file ({E53F8FEA-EAE0-44A6-8774-FFD645390401}) which then brings back the MVC-specific context menu functionality in solution explorer of the hybrid project. • OpenOffice Writer page style bug?

  I have a large Open Office odt document. It uses (mostly) four page styles: Left Page, Right Page, Left Chapter, and Right Chapter. The last two are custom styles that simply remove the header. But I have a problem with Chapter 4: if I try to set the style of the first page to Right Chapter, it sets the style of Chapter 3's first page! I've tried it several times, and it always does this. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug? Or is my file corrupted?

  we have a farm of SharePoint 2010 that worked properly since last week. we configure and start the search service last week and it is also worked and when we test it with some criteria , worked , and results appear for us so we are very happy. but after few days when we search , occur this error: after that we delete application service and reconfure. and now when we open any document libraries occur this error: but lists open correctly without any error An unexpected error has occurred.
