  A couple of my friends run a business and they asked me to build them a public website. It will only be used for information about the company with soe pictures. No transactions will be involved. Right now I work for a company where I build internal websites, and do alot of backend programming in C#. I understand html, css, jquery, etc. so I feel like I am completely capable of building a website for them. However, I do not know all the basic knowledge to building one. For example, where should we host the files, what type of security issues do I need to be aware of, what's the best software to use for developing websites (I use visual studio at work), where can I find some design techniques, etc. Any help is appreciated.

• Security settings for this service require 'Basic' Authentication

  Had an issue calling WCF service today. The following exception was being thrown when service was called:WebHost failed to process a request. Sender Information: System.ServiceModel.ServiceHostingEnvironment+HostingManager/35320229 Exception: System.ServiceModel.ServiceActivationException: The service '/InteliChartVendorCommunication/VendorService.svc' cannot be activated due to an exception during compilation.  The exception message is: Security settings for this service require 'Basic' Authentication but it is not enabled for the IIS application that hosts this service..Ensured Basic authentication was indeed enabled in IIS before getting stumped on what actual issue could be. Turns out it was CustomErrors setting. Value was set to "off" vs "Off". Would have expected different exception from .NET (i.e. web.config parse exception) but it works now either way.

• How to define a natural id in database?

  There are a lot of manuals. I am trying to create an database to hold information of these documents. But, there is a small problem. How can I give meaningful id to the manuals? Are there any standard or logic behind the giving meaningful id to the documents? If there is no standard, can you tell me how I should do that? example: table : manual id | manual name EDIT: Not Meaningful ID 1 or M1 or foo 2 C2 bar 3 P123 name ... ... ... (i) (ii) (iii) (i) Not meaningful for me because if some item deleted, there can be gap. ex 1 33 100. (ii) random character can be confusing when one try to give a name to new manual (iii) Why giving name is not preferred is because finding a name to the manual as ID is hard after 500 manuals.   Is there any design pattern or practice recommended for business layer when dealing with multiple API version. For example, I have something like this. http://site.com/blogs/v1/?count=10 which calls business object method GetAllBlogs(int count) to get information http://site.com/blogs/v2/?blog_count=20 which calls business object method GetAllBlogs_v2(int blogCounts) Since parameter name is changed, I created another business method for version 2. This is just one example but it could have other breaking changes for which it requires me to create another method to support both version. Is there any design pattern or best practice for business/data access layer I should follow when supporting API Versioning?

• How To Purchase An MSDN License In India [closed]

  I need to purchase a single license for Visual Studio Professional with MSDN. The MSDN buy site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb841434.aspx) does not allow purchases from India. It directs Indians to purchase from resellers. I contacted Microsoft and they sent me a link to a list of resellers http://www.microsoft.com/india/originalsoftware/business/retailStore1.aspx Many of these resellers do not even have a website. Many of them do not exist at the addresses mentioned (they have moved). Microsoft support personnel also seem very cagey about releasing any information. They do not even read the mail. They simply resend their canned response with the same link. There are many resellers (not mentioned in the microsoft page) who are selling MSDN subscriptions. Are they legitimate? • Window colors/shades/decoarations/whatever per instance

  Sometimes I open several instances of one program at the same time and have to switch between them every few seconds and get totally confused as to which is which (they all display similar information, except few bits). I'd like to have each one of them color-coded, different shades, window border, etc or have anything visual to make them differ from one another to ease the confusion. Ideally this would happen automatically when I launch a new instance. I guess this belongs to the window manager so mine is xfce. In one of the window managers I used to use a huge label was displayed each time I switched between workspaces, something like that (with window title or simple number) would do as well. Any clues?

  I'm trying to figure out how to find out if there's a good standard format for sharing business information such as: Business Name Address - well-defined fields Lat,Lng Coords Business Type - maybe from a well-defined enum, my starting point contains Retail,Food,Drink,Coffee,Service Hours of operation - including a spot for 'except laksdasd' or 'sometimes we open late' which could be just plain language Business Keywords - don't know if this is asking too much. how well do http meta tags work in practice? So, if no such thing exists, is this something I can submit to IETF? I can't currently find it on http://www.rfc-editor.org/cgi-bin/rfcsearch.pl , and vCard doesn't suit my needs.. Thanks!

• Do I need to notify a user if I am using statistics software in an iPhone app?

  Hello, I am currently creating a (very simple) Objective-C client to send basic statistical data to my server for an iPhone app - just things like the state of the app (first-launch or launch, error, etc), along with the make/model/version (i.e.: "iPod touch 4.2"). No personally identifiable information or location data is sent. Is there anything, in the Apple Developer agreement or otherwise, that states that I must notify the user if I am doing this? I'm not interested in selling the data or anything, I just want to use the data to make my apps better. I am not adverse to telling the user I am doing this if it is required, I just don't want to scare the users (the paranoid "oooh, they're tracking me, they know exactly where I am" crowd) if I don't have to. Thanks for any advice.

• "Fatal Error" message during boot process

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with ATI proprietary FGLRX graphic drivers When I boot, I can see this very quick message appearing; I don't have time to read it: **Fatal Error ..................................**(&@something i cant read) I searched through the log file in /var/log/ in order to find what is wrong and I did find something in the /var/log/Xorg.1.log: 21:31:08 [ 15.734] (--) using VT number 1 [ 204.647] Fatal server error: [ 204.647] xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call [ 204.647] [ 204.647] Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support at http://wiki.x.org for help. [ 204.647] Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.1.log" for additional information. [ 204.647] But this is already Xorg.1.log. And there is a Xorg.0.log also & Xorg.0.log.old but it doesnt have any error in it. My system seems to work properly and it seems its not affected by this But how do I correct this message? Any suggestions?

  Hm ... you might ask yourself why there are no Oracle Database 12c slides available for download, neither in the OOW 2012 content system nor on our blog (and I believe nowhere else). Simple reason: As long as Oracle Database 12c is not released and available we are not allowed to offer slides for download. Therefore people were simply taking pictures during the 12c sessions with their phones, iPods and cameras. Roy took a nice shot: Sorry for that - we'll make the content available as soon as Oracle Database 12c gets released. In between you can download our OOW 2012 talk Database Upgrades on Steroids: Real Speed, Real Customers, Real Secrets as PDF (3.4MB) - but the 12c content is currently not in that PDF. But a lot of information applies to your source database and/or to any upgrade - so it still might be helpful. • What are the system requirements for each flavor of Ubuntu Desktop?

  I'm thinking about installing Ubuntu Desktop, but I don't know what flavor is the better for my system. What are the minimum and recommended hardware requirements? What kind of CPU? How much memory? Should I have Hardware Acceleration? What flavor should I use? This is an attempt of a canonical answer. My answers have the "official minimal requirements", the recommended are a mix of official sources and opinion based (along with the answer it's told the source). You can comment or edit if you feel that the information is obsolete or incomplete. Is a good rule of thumb that any system capable to run Windows Vista, 7, 8 x86 OS X will almost always be a lot faster with any Ubuntu flavor even if they are lower-spec than described below.

• Why can't get past the user info screen when installing 10.10?

  I have a Dell Inspiron 1318 (07-08?) with an Intel Cored 2 Duo Processor and 3 GB of RAM. I can run Ubuntu 10.10 from the disk, but I've tried to install it three times with no success. As the files are installing, the program asks me to enter my user information. I'm fine through the time zone screen, and fine through the keyboard screen. But when it asks me to set my used name and password, the "next" button stays ghosted out no matter what I enter. Eventually, the installation gets to the point where it says it's waiting for me, but no matter what I do I can't get the "next" button to click. I'm a complete newbie, and I've been stuck at the same spot three times. If anyone has any idea what's going wrong, I'd love to hear about it.

• Why do recruiters contact you instead of the companies themselves? [closed]

  When posting my resume, I get hounded by recruiters who try to sell me on a job. Why don't the actual company HR employees contact me directly? My information is available for them to find. Wouldn't they save money by bypassing the recruiter fees? Out of the hundreds of recruiter phone calls, only 2 actual companies contacted me directly (and 2-3 other non-company individuals). Should the HR employees be let go if they are so irrelevant? (The careers exchange doesn't allow posting questions.)

• Scan-Line Z-Buffering Dilemma

  I have a set of vertices in 3D space, and for each I retain the following information: Its 3D coordinates (x, y, z). A list of pointers to some of the other vertices with which it's connected by edges. Right now, I'm doing perspective projection with the projecting plane being XY and the eye placed somewhere at (0, 0, d), with d < 0. By doing Z-Buffering, I need to find the depth of the point of a polygon (they're all planar) which corresponds to a certain pixel on the screen so I can hide the surfaces that are not visible. My questions are the following: How do I determine to which polygon does a pixel belong to so I could use the formula of the plane which contains the polygon to find the Z-coordinate? Are my data structures correct? Do I need to store something else entirely in order for this to work? I'm just projecting the vertices onto the projection plane and joining them with lines based on the pointer lists.

  I would like to ask if there is any good program for ubuntu 12.04 to organize a library of books.I want to mention that I also have books written in my native language (Greek) and I have books written in other languages like English,French, etc too .So basically I need an application which can fetch information from databases for Greek books. For example - Adding a Greek (ISBN) book database source and when I type the ISBN of the book in the program ,it should find the book from that databases. Is this possible? I already tried Tellico and GCstar but they were unable to find books with Greek ISBN .I tried to add a Greek book source but it wasn't successful.

• ISO 12207: SQA as a supporting process?

  I have been following ISO12207 for the sake of my thesis dealing with software quality. Now I should explain quality assurance and here comes the problem: according to this norm, QA is a supporting process, separated but on the same level with verification, validation and auditing processes. According to other sources, Quality Assurance is basically high level activity making sure that standards, norms etc. are being followed. Usually the part of Quality Assurance is the Quality Control (testing, reviewing, inspections also V&V) which measures the quality and provides QA with this information so it can be acted upon. I somehow do not understand how QA is thought to be according to this ISO and what activities should it perform. Also it does not mention QC except for a footnote.
