• Mouse disables on key press, but touchpad doesn't

  My mouse cursor disables for 1-2 seconds when the keyboard is used. This can make gaming especially difficult. The touchpad is fine; I can use it at the same time as the keyboard. Doing some forum searching, I can see that going to mouse and touchpad touchpad disable touchpad when typing works for the touchpad, but I still have the problem when using the mouse. I've tried using synaptiks, and setting the 'automatically switch off touchpad on keyboard activity' time to 0 seconds doesn't seem to work either. I'd appreciate any help.

• Pair programming remotely with Visual Studio?

  What tools exist to facilitate pair programming with Visual Studio when the programmers are not in the same physical location? At the moment we are thinking voice (Skype?) plus remote desktop (VNC? TeamViewer?), but it would be good to know of other suggestions and experiences. Also, is there anything more integrated with Visual Studio? A bit more background: we are two experienced developers with who have collaborated well for a long time on a large mature project (ASP.NET, Windows Forms and SQL Server). However we are not usually working on the same part of the code base at the same time. We intend to spend some weeks doing substantial refactoring and it would be ideal if we were able to do this work with a pair-programming approach.

• How do I update the IcedTea Plugin on 12.10?

  Whenever I open up the page http://www.runescape.com/game.ws? in google chrome I get the notice, "IcedTea was blocked because it is out of date" and gives me the two options of updating it or running this time. I've gone to the link attached to the option of updating it and its a wikipedia page http://icedtea.classpath.org/wiki/Main_Page that wasn't helpful for me because I didn't know what to download and install. Whenever I click, 'Run this time' it works momentarily but it is prone to have the runescape interface in the browser disappear and be replaced with a black screen.

• Roanoke Code Camp 2014

  I just got a new project. It’s a WinForm app. And it’s interesting because I will have the possibility to learn how fish farms work and are managed. I will have to develop touch interfaces, and use datasnap to communicate and sync data between farm and office. The development will be done in DELPHI win32, still not sure about the database, but maybe SQLlite. So now comes the difficult part of the project, building it. I am just finishing one. It took me a lot of time to do it and I am a bit “burned out”. I will have time to relax, not much, but a few days. What I am looking is some tips and tricks and possibly tools to be able to speed up the development. It must be up and running in 2 months. So what tricks do you use to speed up things?

• Usefulness of the Backlinks shown in Webmaster Tools

  Is the list of links for a site shown in Google Webmaster Tools a complete list or just a sample? I've noticed that the links in there appear to be all the ones I didn't think would have any real value - either because they were nofollow or from irrelivant sites. The few I did think would be some use have never shown up and there's also some links that are sometimes there and sometimes not (such as my linkedIn profile). Does this mean that the missing links don't/no longer carry any value? It almost appears that the list is there for Google to either inform you about problems (there was a useful list there when someone tried to SPAM my site) or mis-imform you about which link-building strategies work or not (to keep people guessing about what works or not).

• Problem animating in Unity/Orthello 2D. Can't move gameObject

  I have a enemy npc that moves left and right in a corridor. It's animated with 2 sprites using Orthello 2D Framework. If I untick the animation's play on start and looping, the npc moves correctly. If I turn it on, the npc tries to move but is pulled back to his starting position again and again because of the animation loop. If I turn looping off during runtime, the npc moves correctly again. What did I do wrong? • Documenting user interfaces in a mouse-less touch UI

  “Old” apps rely on mouse pointing and tooltips to explain what a given button is for. Maybe there is text associated with the button, but you can only put so much text without wasting useful screen state. More so in a phone or tablet app. I’ve seen a trend in Google apps where they put an overlay on top of the app the first time it runs, to explain how the various pieces of UI work. I have seen this also on my Nexus phone, but don’t have a screenshot. I don’t recall a way to actually bring that help overlay back again, so that’s maybe some built-in gesture that’s missing. • Starting small custom development company, type of niches to target?

  This is kind of a new years thing for me as I want to be more entrepreneurial going forward with programming and this is kind of a general question for anyone who may share the same ambitions as me. I have experience with web programming and, although I work full time for a company doing programming, I have some freelance programmers that I work with / employ for small projects. I want to see about taking things to the next level as far as building a small company doing custom development. I'm just not sure how to figure out what niches to target as far as what type of apps to build as demos, etc. I was thinking mobile (maybe Android or Iphone) but am just curious if anyone has any advice / resources. A lot of "web development" seems to end up being just using a CMS like Joomla or Wordpress, for smaller sites, so I want to figure a way to steer clear of this crowd and find some opportunity with companies / entrepreneurs who actually need real programming development done to build apps. • Do you count a Masters in CS as a negative? [closed]

  In my experience interviewing developers I feel like candidates who've achieved a Masters in Comp Sci tend to be worse programmers on average that those who don't have a Masters. Is that just me, or have others noticed this phenomenon? If so, why would that be the case? UPDATE I appreciate the thoughtful comments. I think I should have been clearer in the comparison I'm making. Given two candidates who graduated from college around the same time, someone who went on to gain a Masters seems on average to be a worse programmer than someone who spent all their time in industry.

  I tried out TopCoder today. While I liked the problem, the Java editor didn't work for me. The remote compiling time and the lack of unit tests also made it difficult to complete the task. I ended up coding the solution in Eclipse and the pasting it into the TopCoder window. I tried out EclipseCoder, but it didn't suit my needs either. What tools do you use and how do you hook up your development environment with TopCoder? How does TopCoder handle submissions, and is there any way to speed up the time it takes to process them?

• Approaching SICP in Clojure instead of Scheme

  I am a third year bachelor student in a software engineering program, and I brought up the idea of reading SICP to an adviser to gain a deeper and more fundamental understanding of the principles behind all this software we engineer. He suggested not to learn Scheme to complete the book (because it's not as common as modern dialects of Lisp) but to do the exercises in Clojure instead. It's an already difficult book, if I do attempt the book's exercises in the more modern Clojure, how would that work? For example, I can't find any real solutions, the syntax they teach for Scheme is different, etc.

• dhcp configuration not working ubuntu 11.10

  I am usually behind a proxy server in college so I connect to the ethernet or wifi using manual IPv4 addresses only inside college. I have been trying really hard to get the internet work at home, there is no proxy and I have set the network to use automatic dhcp. It seems like it is not able to connect to the port, It gets disconnected after some time automatically and then tries to reconnect. The same thing is happening with wifi networks also, after some time i see a pop up asking for authentication and ultimately its not able to connect. What might be the problem here. I looked up some similar questions and checked the /etc/network/interfaces file and looks like this: auto lo iface lo inet loopback I have no idea what those lines mean but there is no configuration for eth0 or wlan0. Any help is deeply appreciated. Ubuntu loses it charms due to these small glitches.

• New ZFS Encryption features in Solaris 11.1

  Solaris 11.1 brings a few small but significant improvements to ZFS dataset encryption.  There is a new readonly property 'keychangedate' that shows that date and time of the last wrapping key change (basically the last time 'zfs key -c' was run on the dataset), this is similar to the 'rekeydate' property that shows the last time we added a new data encryption key. $ zfs get creation,keychangedate,rekeydate rpool/export/home/bob NAME PROPERTY VALUE SOURCE rpool/export/home/bob creation Mon Mar 21 11:05 2011 - rpool/export/home/bob keychangedate Fri Oct 26 11:50 2012 local rpool/export/home/bob rekeydate Tue Oct 30 9:53 2012 local The above example shows that we have changed both the wrapping key and added new data encryption keys since the filesystem was initially created.  If we haven't changed a wrapping key then it will be the same as the creation date.  It should be obvious but for filesystems that were created prior to Solaris 11.1 we don't have this data so it will be displayed as '-' instead. Another change that I made was to relax the restriction that the size of the wrapping key needed to match the size of the data encryption key (ie the size given in the encryption property).  In Solaris 11 Express and Solaris 11 if you set encryption=aes-256-ccm we required that the wrapping key be 256 bits in length.  This restriction was unnecessary and made it impossible to select encryption property values with key lengths 128 and 192 when the wrapping key was stored in the Oracle Key Manager.  This is because currently the Oracle Key Manager stores AES 256 bit keys only.  Now with Solaris 11.1 this restriciton has been removed. There is still one case were the wrapping key size and data encryption key size will always match and that is where they keysource property sets the format to be 'passphrase', since this is a key generated internally to libzfs and to preseve compatibility on upgrade from older releases the code will always generate a wrapping key (using PKCS#5 PBKDF2 as before) that matches the key length size of the encryption property. The pam_zfs_key module has been updated so that it allows you to specify encryption=off. There were also some bugs fixed including not attempting to load keys for datasets that are delegated to zones and some other fixes to error paths to ensure that we could support Zones On Shared Storage where all the datasets in the ZFS pool were encrypted that I discussed in my previous blog entry. • How to have operations with character/items on binary with concrete operations on C++?

  I have the next problem. A item can have a lot of states: NORMAL = 0000000 DRY = 0000001 HOT = 0000010 BURNING = 0000100 WET = 0001000 COLD = 0010000 FROZEN = 0100000 POISONED= 1000000 A item can have some states at same time but not all of them Is impossible to be dry and wet at same time. If you COLD a WET item, it turns into FROZEN. If you HOT a WET item, it turns into NORMAL A item can be BURNING and POISON Etc. I have tried to set binary flags to states, and use AND to combine different states, checking before if it is possible or not to do it, or change to another status. Does there exist a concrete approach to solve this problem efficiently without having an interminable switch that checks every state with every new state? It is relatively easy to check 2 different states, but if there exists a third state it is not trivial to do.
