• Grails + GAE - Issue using app.servlet.version=2.5

  Updating the servlet version in application.properties to 2.5 has no affect on the generated web.xml. The generated web.xml is still version 2.4. app.servlet.version=2.5 Also, if I try to execute "run-app" I get the exception below: Running Grails application.. • Project Euler considered harmful

  Hi, I've done some Project Euler problems and I was able to solve them very fast because I already knew all the theory behind them. I learned that "accidentaly" because I also had to learn it for university. I used to also solve olympiad problems, I wasn't very good but I was solving some of the problems. I've reached the conclusion that Project Euler problems are taken out of their context(and olympiad problems as well). That's why they are hard. Mathematics and it's theory is taught in order to make the problems easy. However, Project Euler apparently makes an invitation at making them hard again. Why ? I honestly think this is a complete waste of time. Mathematicians had centuries at their disposal in order to solve math problems and they developed theories to explain properly why certain things happen. I think olympiad problems and Project Euler problems are really useless. What's your take on Project Euler ? Do you get something out of it or do you just find formulas on some websites and implement the code fast and then get the result and solve the problem ?

  I'm struggling to get my head around how to accommodate a mocked repository's method that only accepts a Linq expression as its argument. • Mac, PDFKit, PDF/X

  I'm in need of generating and viewing PDF/X-1a. After spending quite some time I came to the conclusion that the only way (hopefully someone will prove me wrong) to achieve this is to use Cocoa. More context: I need to generate PDF/X-1a, that is, all the fonts embeded, spot colors, overprint, ... preferably from Python. But the only libraries which support such things are iText and perhaps and Apache FOP. The first one could be used with Jython, which is ok but not optimal. But then, I simply could not find any viable viewer. Poppler, xpdf, Sumatra, mupdf, ghostscirpt - all of them - just cannot handle large CMYK pdfs, lots of text, ... I really would like to use open sourced libraries but unfortuntatelly the only option I see right now is to buy Mac as I saw one could print (Save-as) to built-in PDF printer under PDF/X conformance and I expect Preview to be comparable, if not better, to Acrobat. But I'm not sure if is it even possible to programmatically access the MacOS libraries responsible for generating PDF? I'm asking because I heard not everything from MacOS is available via public API... (And what Python goes, I thought I could use PyObjC..?) Any others ideas are of course very welcomed!

• How to upgrade all dependencies to a specific version

  Hi, I tried doing a mvn dependency:tree and I get a tree of dependencies. My question is, My project depends on many modules which internally depends on many spring artifacts. There are a few version clashes. I want to upgrade all spring related libraries to say the latest one (2.6.x or above). What is the preferred way to do this? Should I declare all the deps spring-context, spring-support (and 10 other artifacts) in my pom.xml and point them to 2.6.x ? Is there any other better method ?   In my most recent question: Unit Testing Best Practice? / C# InternalsVisibleTo() attribute for VBNET 2.0 while testing?, I was asking about InternalsVisibleToAttribute. I have read the documentation on how to use it, and everything is fine and understood. However, I can't instantiate my class Groupe from my Testing project. I want to be able to instantiate my internal class in my wrapper assembly, from my testing assembly. Any help is appreciated! • Remote JMS connection still using localhost

  I have a created a JMS Connection Factory on a remote glassfish server and want to use that server from a java client app on my local machine. I have the following configuration to get the context and connection factory: Properties env = new Properties(); env.setProperty("java.naming.factory.initial", "com.sun.enterprise.naming.SerialInitContextFactory"); env.setProperty("java.naming.factory.url.pkgs", "com.sun.enterprise.naming"); env.setProperty("java.naming.factory.state", "com.sun.corba.ee.impl.presentation.rmi.JNDIStateFactoryImpl"); env.setProperty("org.omg.CORBA.ORBInitialHost", JMS_SERVER_NAME); env.setProperty("org.omg.CORBA.ORBInitialPort", "3700"); initialContext = new InitialContext(env); TopicConnectionFactory topicConnectionFactory = (TopicConnectionFactory) initialContext.lookup("jms/MyConnectionFactory"); topicConnection = topicConnectionFactory.createTopicConnection(); topicConnection.start(); This seems to work and when I delete the ConnectionFactory from the glassfish server I get a exception indicating that is can't find jms/MyConnectionFactory as expected. However when I subsequently use my topicConnection to get a topic it tries to connect to localhost:7676 (this fails as I am not running glassfish locally). If I dynamically create a topic: TopicSession pubSession = topicConnection.createTopicSession(false, Session.AUTO_ACKNOWLEDGE); Topic topic = pubSession.createTopic(topicName); TopicPublisher publisher = pubSession.createPublisher(topic); Message mapMessage = pubSession.createTextMessage(message); publisher.publish(mapMessage); and the glassfish server is not running locally I get the same connection refused however, if I start my local glassfish server the topics are created locally and I can see them in the glassfish admin console. In case you ask I do not have jms/MyConnectionFactory on my local glassfish instance, it is only available on the remote server. I can't see what I am doing wrong here and why it is trying to use localhost at all. Any ideas? Cheers, James

  Context I am fairly new to database design (=know the basics) and am grappling with how best to design my database for a project I am currently working on. In short, my database will keep a log of which employees have attended certain health and safety courses throughout the year. There are multiple types of course e.g. moving objects, fire safety, hygiene etc. In terms of my database design I need to accommodate the following: Each location can have multiple divisions Each division can have multiple departments Each department can have multiple functions Each function can have multiple job roles Each job role can have different course requirements Also note that the structure at each location may not be the same e.g. the departments within divisions are not the same across locations and the functions within departments may also differ. Edit - updated to better articulate problem Let's assume I am just looking at Location, Division and Department and I have my database as follows: LocationTable DivisionTable DepartmentTable LocationID(PK) DivisionID(PK) DepartmentID(PK) LocationName DivisionName DepartmentName There is a many-to-many relationship between Locations and Divisions and also between Departments and Divisions. Suppose I set up a 'Junction Table' as follows: Location_Division LocationID(FK) DivisionID(FK) Using Location_Division I could easily pull back the Divisions for any Location. However, suppose I want to pull back all departments for a given Division in a given Location. If I set up another 'Junction Table' for Division and Department then I can't see how I would differentiate Division by Location? • Can't submit new object to WCF DataService because of Primary Key constraint

  I've got a SQL database that uses Guid's for PK's and upon insert, it generates a NewId(). I have an EF data context setup pointing to that database with the primary keys setup with the Entity key:true, Setter:private and StoreGeneratedPattern:Identity because I want the DB to manage the keys and not have code set the PK property. I have an OData (System.Web.Data.Services.DataService) endpoint to access this data (just like: Hanselman did. I have another app that has a service reference to this service. Upon trying to create a new object from this reference (i.e. Product), the ProductId Primary Key is being defaulted to Guid.Empty when doing var serviceEntities = new ServiceEntities(serviceUri); //OData endpoint var product = new Product(); product.Name = "New Product"; serviceEntities.AddToProducts(product); serviceEntities.SaveChanges(); // error happens here When debugging, I look at the Product.ProductId property and it's set to Guid.Empty. When called SaveChanges, I do not want the ProductId field to be sent to the service. The response I get is: Error processing request stream. Property 'ProductId' is a read-only property and cannot be updated. Please make sure that this property is not present in the request payload. Is there a way to do this or what can I do to get this setup correctly and still have the DB generated the keys. Here is the same setup as the Product example above.

• WPF Grid Row / Column Sizing in Proportion to DesiredSize?

  I have two user controls arranged vertically in a grid, both of which can expand to be taller than the grid can accommodate. I've put them in each in a scrollviewer which functionally works. What I want though is to give them them space in proportion to the amount that they want at run time. So if there's 500 height available, the upper control wants 400 and the lower 600, the upper control would get 200 and the bottom 300. I have no idea at design time how much space each will want in proportion to the other, so using 1*, 2* etc. for row height won't work for me. I can hand-code run-time proportional sizing, but am I missing a simple trick in XAML that would get me what I want? • Does HDC use alpha channel?

  Hello. Is there a way I can determine if an HDC uses alpha channel? I read Question 333559 and Question 685684, but their questions are about BITMAP. Apparently, some HDC has alpha channel (though they may not use it. Call this "Type 1") while others do not ("Type 2"). I know this by doing the following: Given a HDC, Create a compatible DC, and create a DIB section. Select the created HBITMAP into the compatible DC. BitBlt the source HDC to the compatible DC. Now examine the DIB section bits. For type 2 HDC, after every 3 bytes there is a byte always 0 (like 255 255 255 0); for type 1, these bytes are usualy 255 (like 250 240 230 255). To avoid false positive, I memset the bits to all 0x80 prior to the calls. Use GetDIBits directly on the source HDC, specify the HBITMAP as GetCurrentObject(hdc, OBJ_BITMAP). For both types of HDC, the 4th bytes are always 0. Change the DC bitmap by calling ExtTextOut. For type 2, ExtTextOut always set the 4th bytes to 0. For type 1, ExtTextOut always leave them untouched. I also noticed that the source HDC that are created by APIs (CreateCompatibleDC(), BeginPaint() ...) are always type 2. Type 1 HDC are from standard controls (like menu text). Even the HDC I CreateCompatibleDC from a type 1 becomes a type 2. So, on one hand, I'm frustrated that Microsoft does not provide equal information to developers (another example may be that you cannot know the direction of a HBITMAP after it is created), on the other hand, I'm still wondering is there a way to distinguish these HDC.   I need to write a junit test for a rather complex application which runs in a tomcat. I wrote a class which builds up my spring context. private static ApplicationContext springContext = null; springContext = new ClassPathXmlApplicationContext( new String[] {"beans"....}); In the application there is a call: public class myClass implements ServletContextAware { .... final String folder = servletContext.getRealPath("/example"); ... } which breaks everything, because the ServletContext is null. I have started to build a mock object: static ServletConfig servletConfigMock = createMock(ServletConfig.class); static ServletContext servletContextMock = createMock(ServletContext.class); @BeforeClass public static void setUpBeforeClass() throws Exception { expect(servletConfigMock.getServletContext()).andReturn(servletContextMock).anyTimes(); expect(servletContextMock.getRealPath("/example")).andReturn("...fulllpath").anyTimes(); replay(servletConfigMock); replay(servletContextMock); } Is there a simple methode to inject the ServletContext or to start the tomcat with a deployment descriptor at the runtime of the junit test? I am using: spring, maven, tomcat 6 and easymock for the mock objects.

• Hiding a UINavigationController's UIToolbar during viewWillDisappear:

  I've got an iPhone application with a UITableView menu. When a row in the table is selected, the appropriate view controller is pushed onto the application's UINavigationController stack. My issue is that the MenuViewController does not need a toolbar, but the UIViewControllers which are pushed onto the stack do. Each UIViewController that gets pushed calls setToolbarHidden:animated: in viewDidAppear:. To hide the toolbar, I call setToolbarHidden:animated: in viewWillDisappear:. Showing the toolbar works, such that when the pushed view appears the toolbar slides up and the view resizes correctly. However, when the back button is pressed the toolbar slides down but the view does not resize. This means that there's a black strip along the bottom of the view as the other view transitions in. I've tried adding the toolbar's height to the height of the view prior to hiding the toolbar, but this causes the view to be animated during the transition so that there's still a black bar. I realise I can manage my own UIToolbar, but I'd like to use UINavigationControllers built in UIToolbar for convenience. This forum post mentions the same issue, but no workaround is mentioned.

  My project is structured as follows: DAL public IQueryable<Post> GetPosts() { var posts = from p in context.Post select p; return posts; } Service public IList<Post> GetPosts() { var posts = repository.GetPosts().ToList(); return posts; } //Returns a list of the latest feeds, restricted by the count. public IList<PostFeed> GetPostFeeds(int latestCount) { List<Post> post - GetPosts(); //CODE TO CREATE FEEDS HERE return feeds; } Lets say the GetPostFeeds(5) is supposed to return the 5 latest feeds. By going up the list, doesn't it pull down every single post from the database from GetPosts(), just to extract 5 from it? If each post is say 5kb from the database, and there is 1 million records. Wont that be 5GB of ram being used per call to GetPostFeeds()? Is this the way it happens? Should I go back to my DAL and write queries that return only what I need?

• C++ errors not shown in Visual Studio C# project

  I have in Visual Studio 2008 a .NET 3.5 C# project that uses a dll compiled from a C# project (let's call it dll A). Dll A is using on his turn some C++ libraries. The problem is that when I encounter an error while calling objects from dll A, the application just closes, without showing any error. But I need to know what's the problem, I cannot just guess and go blind all along the project with this... I checked Window's event log, could not find anything. I checked the settings of throwing errors in Visual Studio, in menu Debug - Exceptions, all of them are checked (including C++ exceptions), so, any errors should be thrown. My code looks something like this: tessnet2.Tesseract tessocr = new tessnet2.Tesseract(); tessocr.Init(@"s:\temp\tessdata", "eng", false); tessocr.GetThresholdedImage(bmp, Rectangle.Empty).Save("s:\\temp\\" + Guid.NewGuid().ToString() + ".bmp"); List<tessnet2.Word> words = ocr.DoOCR(bmp, "eng"); //App exits at this line If I put in my code something like int x = Convert.ToInt32("test"); this should throw an error. And it throws, and Visual Studio shows it. Does anyone having any idea why the errors are not being shown? Or where else could be registered? Any help is very appreciated! Thanks!

• iPhone: Utility Application - Open Flipside on startup

  I have an application that I started with the Utility Application template. I'm using the Flipside for the Settings screen. I'm having the settings serialized to a file when the app is closed and deserialized when the app is opened. If there is no file to deserialize at startup, I want the flipside to be shown so the user can enter required information. The button works, however my call in viewDidLoad doesn't. I have run through my code with the debugger. [self deserialize] is returning NO and [self showInfo] is being called, and I checked if flipController is nil in that context, and it's not. I've searched around and couldn't find anyone who's tried to do the same thing. I'm stumped to as why this isn't working. Anyone see what I'm doing wrong? Thanks

  hi, I get null pointer exception at line mService.start() when i try to bind to an already started service. I do the same thing from different activity(where the service gets started) everythig goes right. All these activities are part of one application.   Note I have completely re-written my original post to better explain the issue I am trying to understand. I have tried to generalise the problem as much as possible. Also, my thanks to the original people who responded. Hopefully this post makes things a little clearer. Context In short, I am struggling to understand the best way to design a small scale database to handle (what I perceive to be) multiple many-to-many relationships. Imagine the following scenario for a company organisational structure: Textile Division Marketing Division | | ---------------------- ---------------------- | | | | HR Dept Finance Dept HR Dept Finance Dept | | | | ---------- ---------- ---------- --------- | | | | | | | | Payroll Hiring Audit Tax Payroll Hiring Audit Accounts | | | | | | | | Emps Emps Emps Emps Emps Emps Emps Emps NB: Emps denotes a list of employess that work in that area When I first started with this issue I made four separate tables: Divisions - Textile, Marketing (PK = DivisionID) Departments - HR, Finance (PK = DeptID) Functions - Payroll, Hiring, Audit, Tax, Accounts (PK = FunctionID) Employees - List of all Employees (PK = EmployeeID) The problem as I see it is that there are multiple many-to-many relationships i.e. many departments have many divisions and many functions have many departments. Question Giving the database structure above, suppose I wanted to do the following: Get all employees who work in the Payroll function of the Marketing Division To do this I need to be able to differentiate between the two Payroll departments but I am not sure how this can be done? I understand that I could build a 'Link / Junction' table between Departments and Functions so that I can retrieve which Functions are in which Departments. However, I would still need to differentiate the Division they belong to. Research Effort As you can see I am an abecedarian when it comes to database deisgn. I have spent the last two days resaerching this issue, traversing nested set models, adjacency models, reading that this issue is known not to be NP complete etc. I am sure there is a simple solution?

• "Cannot open user default database" error with "User Instance=True"

  I have a desktop application that uses Sql user instancing. This is my connection string: "Data Source=.\SqlExpress; AttachDbFilename=C:\path\file.mdf; Integrated Security=True; User Instance=True; Connect Timeout=100;" My application creates this DB, downloads a load of data into it from a web service and then does a lot of actions with it. The problem comes when I attempt to re-open the connection. I get a SqlException: "Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'myDomain\myusername'." This error makes no sense in this context - I have no default database. I'm logging in to an instance created just for the current application, running separately from SqlExpress. There's no other way to connect to this DB. If I start the SqlExpress service and connect to the default instance it won't be visible. It only exists for this application. The file on disk is locked by the SqlExpress instance service running under the application. if I stop the app and restart it the connection works first time, but fails on re-opening. If I just stop the app I can delete the .mdf files and begin again, but it still crashes when I re-open the connection. As my app started the instance running as me my current user should have access to every DB in the instance. This doesn't happen for other users of the same code, which suggests that it's a SQL config issue. Does anyone have any idea what causes this and how to work around it?

• how to compile with llvm and g++?

  Hi, I use a fedora-11 system and recently I installed llvm ( sudo yum -y install llvm llvm-docs llvm-devel ). When I search for llvm I get them in /usr/bin. some of the links to the binaries are broken(llvm-gcc,llvm-g++,llvm-cpp,etc.) the include files are found within /usr/include/llvm and libs at /usr/lib/llvm. How to compile them using g++? I tried to compile the kaleidoscope code given in the tutorial (http://llvm.org/docs/tutorial/LangImpl3.html) as per directed, but it fails to compile.. • Overlay an HTML page with an HTML form

  Hi folks, this is a question about the best way (or least effort of the best ways) to overlay an html page with a form. Best in this context meaning best user experience whilst meeting the functional requirements. Let's say I have a page with a short form on it; the user has to enter some financial details. To assist the user to enter an accurate value for one of the fields there's another, much longer form. The longer form needs to be displayed only if the user requests the help. For users without javascript, clicking a link will submit the short form (persisting already filled fields in a session) and the server will respond with the long form. They'll submit the long form and the server will combine the submitted data with the persisted data and serve the short form again - with the fields populated. For users with javascript I want to overlay the short form page (in a lightbox stylee) with the long form, allow them to populate the long form and then go back to the short form with less round-trips to the server. Do I: Overlay the short form page with an iframe whose target is the long form? Request the long form over ajax and stuff it into a div? Generate the long form entirely on the client-side? Some other wizadry I haven't thought of? A short explanation of the best mechanism will do me very nicely indeed. Thank you very much!

• a floating toolbar in WTL

  I've created a multimedia app that uses DirectShow to display multiple media streams simultaneously. The app is a WTL MDI application. For video windows, I use a CWindowImpl derived class - one per CChildFrame. I'd like to add controls to the video windows (volume ctrls etc). I'd initially thought about adding a slider (volume) control and a couple of buttons to a context menu - but later thought that this might not be the best approach. I was looking at MS Word 2007 - which has a floating toolbar that allows you to change options on highlighted text. I'd like to implement a similar floating toolbar for the video controls. I googled around a bit and found an old post about floating toolbars in WTL. The response was - for a floating toolbar, create a popup window and make it's parent the main window. I think that this sounds like a reasonable approach. my questions: Is this a good approach, or is there a more standard approach for a floating toolbar now in WTL? Should I make the toolbar a child of the video window or the CChildFrame that contains the video window, in order to ensure that it always remains on top of the video? How can I implement transparency in the floating toolbar, as in the floating toolbar in MS word?

• Custom Membership in ASP.NET MVC 2

  Hello, I'm trying to make my Custom Membership starting from ASP.NET's. I have a users table created by me which has as Primary Key a Guid UserId, exactly the sames as ASP.NET's default user and membership table. I have all the Foreign Key relationships built. However, I cannot insert the user into my custom users table. The data gets inserted correctly into the default ASP.NET's tables. I have tried the following scenarios: First version Receive the user model from POST call the CreateUser method of the Membership.class (stuff gets inserted) without modifying the user object, I try to insert it using EF's AddObject I receive the following error: "Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'LoweredUserName', table 'asp.dbo.aspnet_Users'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.\r\nThe statement has been terminated."} System.Exception {System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException The error actually makes sense as EF's AddObject doesn't know how to create the LoweredUserName value, and I don't want to do it, this is ASP.NET's job. Second version Receive the user model from POST call the CreateUser method of the Membership.class (stuff gets inserted) Get the Guid of the freshly inserted system user get the ASP.NET's User object and overwrite that of user.User get the ASP.NET's Membership object and overwrite that of user.Membership (remember the FKs) try again EF's AddObject new error {"The relationship between the two objects cannot be defined because they are attached to different ObjectContext objects."} System.Exception {System.InvalidOperationException} Don't know what this is, but it certenly doesn't make any sense for me. After some googleing I think that it has something to do with the context, but as I'm a beginner I don't know how to fix it. Any ideeas on how to accomplish this task are more than welcomed, especially if they follow some good practices. Thx
