• Why does 301 redirect work for http but not for https?

  Through my domain registrar I have set up a domain, essayme.co.uk, to automatically forward to https://google.com. If I go to http://essayme.co.uk it works as expected and redirects me to https://google.com. $curl -i http://essayme.co.uk HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently Cache-Control: max-age=900 Content-Type: text/html Location: https://google.com Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.5 X-AspNet-Version: 4.0.30319 X-Powered-By: ASP.NET Date: Sat, 07 Jun 2014 11:14:16 GMT Content-Length: 0 Age: 0 Connection: keep-alive However, if I go to https://essayme.co.uk it just freezes and times out. $curl -i https://essayme.co.uk curl: (7) Failed connect to essayme.co.uk:443; Operation timed out What is happening in the second case? (and, if possible, how can I get the redirect to work for https?) Problem background/clarification: I don't have an SSL certificate for the essayme.co.uk domain above, but I do for my live domain (let's call it mywebsite.com), and I was seeing the exact same problem on this domain (hence why I'm trying to debug the problem). Unfortunately I can't experiment with the live domain (as it's live) and I would like to avoid having to buy a second certificate for essayme.co.uk just for debugging (unless absolutely necessary). The problem I was seeing: my live domain, mywebsite.com (not its real name), has a valid SSL certificate. Visiting https://www.mywebsite.com displayed the webpage as expected. I had set up forwarding (like in the question above) from the naked domain (mywebsite.com) to https://www.mywebsite.com) Visiting http://mywebsite.com redirected to https://www.mywebsite.com as expected. However, visiting https://mywebsite.com would freeze and time out (as in the question above). I also tried forwarding it to http://www.otherwebsite.com as an experiment (i.e. forwarding to another site that does not use SSL), but the result was the same: Visiting http://mywebsite.com redirected to http://www.otherwebsite.com as expected. Visiting https://mywebsite.com would freeze and time out again. So I set up essayme.co.uk as an experiment to try and understand why it doesn't work.

• Server 2008R2 in Extra Small Windows Azure Instance?

  Windows Azure hosting for an Extra Small (XS) Windows VM seems to come out to be about $10 a month right now. I think this XS instance gives you the equivalent of a 1 GHZ CPU with 768MB of RAM. I think the minimum requirements for Server 2008 is 1GHZ CPU with 512MB of RAM. Also, I think the minimum requirements for SQL Server Express is 1GHZ CPU with 256 MB of RAM and that the minimum requirements for Team Foundation Server Express 11 Beta is 2.2 GHZ CPU with 1 Gig of RAM (this 2.2 GHZ part could be a problem for my 1 GHZ XS VM...). Given the performance of the XS Azure instance, would I be able to install: a very basic MVC web site; a free instance of SQL Server Express; a free single user instance of Team Foundation Server Express 11 Beta and run the XS VM instance without serious crashing? I know there are other Shared WebHost providers that can provide these features for me, but those hosting providers have the following disadvantages: They sometimes cost a lot of money after all of the "addons" are in place They probably don't provide the level of security and employee integrity that Microsoft can provide They don't provide the total control that an Azure VM seems to provide

• Tracking feature requests for small-scale components

  I'm curious how other development teams (especially those that work in moderate to large development groups) track "future" features/wishlists for functionality for internally developed frameworks or components. I know the standard advice is that a development team should find one good tool for tracking bugs/features and use that for everything and I agree with that if the future requests are for the product itself. In my company we have an engineering department, which is broken up into multiple groups and within each there can be one to several agile teams. The bug tracking product we use has been "a leader since 1997" (their UI/usability seems to also be evaluated against that year even today) but my agile team or even group doesn't really control what is being used by the whole department. What we are looking to track is not necessarily product features but expansion/nice to have functionality for internal components that go into our product. So to name a few for example... framework/utility library on top of CppUnit which our developers share low-level IPC communications framework Common development SDK that myself and several other team leads started to help share some common code/tools at the department-wide level (this SDK is released as internal "product" to each of the groups). Is the standard practice to use the one bug tracking tool? Or would it make more sense to setup something more localized specifically for our needs and maintain it ourselves? It's also unclear how management will feel if developers start performing "IT" roles of maintaining software and servers. At the same time, right now, we use excel files, internal wiki and MS OneNote for this kind of stuff and that just doesn't feel right. (I'm afraid to ask for actual software recommendations, since that might make this question more localized or something. Also developers needs this way more than management, so it would be nice to find something either free or no more than the cost of a happy hour).

• Host not visible in ECC after pushing master agent on server

  Hi all!! ECC master Agent has been pushed to one of the servers.. Once a Master Agent installed the host should appear within ECC.However, I am unable to see the host. I asked the Server team to stop and start the master agent ,and to check whether required port is enabled, so that server can talk with ECC server. After restarting the service I get an error.I even checked if the port is used by any other service ,it is not.. Somebody plz help what should done here..it’s a Windows server. Here's the error:- "The EMC control Center Master agent service on local computer atrted and the stopped.Some services stopped automatically if they 've no work to do,for example prformance logs and alert services" Thanks in advance!!

• Network trials and tribulations

  Hi, I am in the process of setting up a small (two PC's, both running Windows 7) network using a D-link DI-604 router (which acts only as hub, it's not set up in any way). In the Network and 'Sharing Center' in 'Control Panel' I clicked 'Set up a New (Connection or) Network'. All went well up until the moment I attempted to connect one PC with the other (in the 'Connect' dialog I entered the other PC's IP, no pwd). I can use both PC's to connect to and browse the net though, so the router/hub does not seem to be the problem. And I must have done something right, because the other computer shows up in the 'Network Map'. Any and all help is much appreciated!

• Auto Log-Off Windows users - Windows 2003 domain

  I am trying to make windows clients automatically log off after some time, I have been trying to use the winexit.scr which I have seen working else where in a similar environment. After working though these instructions (I did read the comments and notice the original ADM provided is buggy) I've had no joy what so ever! Winexit.scr refuses to read any settings in the registry, even while using a test account I can access the required reg key(s); edit, add, and remove values. Essentially winexit.scr always uses it's default values: 30 second timeout, no forced log-out. What I really want is a 30 minute timeout with a forced log-out, closing all the users apps etc. I've tried removing and re-adding the ADM template, creating the GPO from scratch several times, giving various registry permissions - including full control to "Everybody" just for fun! Oh, clients are all win XP SP3, DC is win 2003 R2 SP2. So, can anybody suggest something? Cheers!

• Dye Sub printer with specific prints remaining - can I command-line query this?

  Hey, I've got a Sony Dye-Sub printer that holds ink/paper sets - i.e. a very certain amount of ink and paper for ~200 prints. This information is available to me from within Control Panel Printers Preferences Printer Device Information (i.e. current 189 remaining prints). Any way I can perhaps get this information from the command line? I'd like to write a little program to tell me when the number of prints gets low (i.e. < 20), rather than suffer the annoying Windows "run out of paper" popup. I've found the Windows VBScript print utilities, but can't seem to find the request I need for this. Any suggestions? Jason

• How to create a deb package that installs a series of files

  I would like to create a brand new deb package to install series of files. If at all possible, I would like to untar the folder containing these files as part of the installation into a known folder location. Failing that, some knowledge how to package the source folders and files would be very useful. Question is - is this possible and if so - how? Lets give an example: ~/mypluginfolder/ contains the files x, y, a subfolder called abc and inside that another file called z. I want to tar this folder: tar -cvf myfiles.tar ~/mypluginfolder I presume my debian package would look like myfiles.tar.gz myfiles+ppafoss_0.1-1/ myfiles.tar DEBIAN changelog, compat, control, install, rules source Is it possible to somehow untar myfiles.tar to a known folder location for example /usr/share/rhythmbox/plugins/ Thus the final result would be: /usr/share/rhythmbox/plugins/mypluginfolder /usr/share/rhythmbox/plugins/mypluginfolder\x /usr/share/rhythmbox/plugins/mypluginfolder\y /usr/share/rhythmbox/plugins/mypluginfolder\abc\z If - presuming launchpad needs source, advice is sought as to where I should drop the source folders and files into the deb package structure. This will eventually will become a series of individual launchpad PPA packages. What I prefer (but may not be able to achieve...) is to keep my packaging to a minimum - create a series of packages from a template and adjust the bare minimum (changelog etc + the tar file/file & folder structure).

• Amavis / Atermime - Dynamic Email Signatures (Disclaimers)

  I am running a basic iredmail install with amavis, postfix, dovecot. I want to use the declaimer feature to automatically append a disclaimer (in our case a signature). The reasoning for this is that clients (ipad, outlook, etc) don’t have to be configured with signature settings, and that we have corporate control over the actual signatures that are posted. Instead of: '[email protected]' => 'boss.domain.com.txt' I am trying to get to %mailbox + ‘@’ + %domain => %mailbox + “.” + %domain + ‘.txt’ This way we can simply use a script to generate the .txt / .htm signature files using just mysql / php.   Looking in Web Analytics I could see several external sites pointing at an old .htm file on my web server that no longer existed, so I thought I would get IIS to redirect to the new .aspx replacement. How hard could it be? This has annoyed me for quite a while today so here is the answer. 1. Install the Http Redirection module - this is not installed by default!! Windows 7 Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features->Turn Windows Features on or off. Internet Information Services->World Wide Web Services->Common Http Features->HTTP Redirection. Windows Server 2008 Start->Administrative Tools->Server Manager. Roles->Web Server (IIS). Role Services->Add Role Services. Common Http Features->HTTP Redirection. 2. Edit your web.config file <configuration>     .....     <location path="oldfile.htm">         <system.webServer>             <httpRedirect enabled="true" destination="/newfile.aspx" exactDestination="true" childOnly="true" httpResponseStatus="Permanent" />         </system.webServer>     </location>     ..... </configuration> When a user clicks or Google crawls ‘oldfile.htm’ it will get a permanent redirect to ‘/newfile.aspx’ - and should take any Page Rank to the new file.  #

  I've been writing games for around 10 years now (from QBasic to C# and everything in-between). I need to start stretching my skills into different areas. What are other, surprising topics I should read up on? Expected topics would include the usual suspects: Programming language of your choice Scripting language Source control Project management (or Agile) Graphics API Maybe some AI (A* path-finding?) Physics (projectile physics) Unit testing (automated testing) I'm looking for more esoteric topics; things that you don't expect to need to know, but if you do know them, they make a difference. This could include things like: Art skills (drawing, lighting, colouring, layout, etc.) Natural language processing The physics of sound (sound-waves, doppler effect, etc.) Personally, I feel that having technical art skills (eg. can make decent art-work if you can only come up with ideas; or, following Photoshop/GIMP tutorials) was the most beneficial for me. This is not intended to be an open-ended question; I'm looking for specific skills that helped you and you expect will continue to benefit you in the short- and long-term.

  Where is Stakeholder Management in OUM?  Stakeholder Management typically falls into the purview of the Project Manager, which means much of the associated guidance is found in the OUM Manage Focus Area (a.k.a. Manage).  There is no process in Manage named Stakeholder Management, but this “touch point” can be found in a variety of other processes including Bid Transition (BT), Communication Management (CMM) and Organizational Change Management (OCHM). •         Stakeholder management starts in the Bid Transition process with Stakeholder Analysis •         This Stakeholder Analysis is used to build the Project Team Communication Plan in the Communication Management process. •         Stakeholder management should be executed during the Execution and Control phase.  For example, as issues are resolved, the project manager should take the action item to follow up with the affected stakeholders to ensure they are aware that the issue has been resolved. •       The broader topic of Stakeholder management is also addressed very thoroughly in the Organizational Change Management process in the Implement Focus Area, which is a touch point to the Organizational Change Management process in Manage. • What does the fan speed sensor really report?

  I have an overheating issue on my netbook (ASUS EeePC 1015PW), which I'm trying to troubleshoot. Using lm-sensors while overheating gave me this output : acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +86.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) eeepc-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter fan1: 4089 RPM coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Core 0: +82.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +80.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) But I can't hear the fan. So I enabled manual pwm controling and set the fan to full speed, and after a few minutes I got this output : acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +65.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) eeepc-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter fan1: 4016 RPM coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Core 0: +62.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +58.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) And this time I could hear the fan spinning. So there's quite obviously an issue with either fan control or fan monitoring. Hence the question : what kind of physical information does the fan sensor really report? Thank you PS. I should have added that the computer is a small, hard-to-disassemble netbook, so I can't and don't want to try experiments like "block the fan and see what the sensor reports".

• Share one monitor with another user and display their screen as well

  My housemate and I just started playing the original RollerCoaster Tycoon again - what a nostalgia trip! Anyways, we both have two monitors, and would like to view the other's game on the secondary monitor while playing, since we're in different rooms. VNC-like applications sorta work, but they require two separate instances running (one to share each direction), and as a whole are rather slow and clumsy. We don't need any remote control at all, just viewing. I'm using XP, he Win7. We could probably get it to run through some means in Linux, if necessary.

During planning, evaluation, quality control, and disaster mitigation, the people having their say at each step means that successful database deployment is a carefully managed course of action. With so many factors involved at every stage, we would love to find a way for our software to help out, by simplifying processes, speeding them up or joining together the people and the steps that make it all happen. We’re hoping our new research group for database delivery (SQL Server and Oracle) will help us understand the views and experiences of those of you out there in the trenches managing database changes. The code implements proper event sequence, consistent interfaces, correct data and control flow, completeness, appropriate allocation timing and sizing budgets, and error definition, isolation, and recovery. and The software components and units of each software item have been completely and correctly integrated into the software item Not sure how to verify without testing but it is not there as a technique. From IEEE: Verification: The process of evaluating software to determine whether the products of a given development phase satisfy the conditions imposed at the start of that phase. [IEEE-STD-610]. Validation: The process of evaluating software during or at the end of the development process to determine whether it satisfies specified requirements. [IEEE-STD-610] At the end of development phase? That would mean UAT.. So the question is, what testing (unit, integration, system, uat) will be considered verification or validation? I do not understand why some say dynamic verification is testing, while others that only validation. An example: I am testing an application. System requirements say there are two fields with max. lenght of 64 characters and Save button. Use case say: User will fill in first and last name and save. When checking the fields and Save button presence, I would say its verification. When I follow the use case, its validation. So its both together, done on the system as a whole.

• FTP "PUT" fails from Virtual Machine, but not host PC: 504 Command not implemented for that paramete

  I have an FTP Script I'm using to automate a file transfer. The transfer works fine on my PC (XP SP2), but when I try and run it on a VM on my PC (XP SP2), the "put" commands gives off: 504 Command not implemented for that parameter. FTP File: open [ftp site] [username] [password] cd [directory on FTP server] binary hash put ..\[subfolder1]\[Subfolder2]\[subfolder3]\[filename] bye The FTP site/server is around the world, and not under my control. From what I understand of a 504, that means the command should NEVER work, but since the same script DOES work on my PC (hosting the VM), that eliminates syntax, file naming, etc. The put command when triggered from the VM, actually creates a 0 length file on the target FTP server, but doesn't populate the file.

• What are the common mistakes in 'tailored Scrum approaches'?

  I have seen this before. Management wants to be agile and be scrummified, but does not want to step out of the status quo. My latest observation is no different; here, the Scrum is 'tailored' to the organization; specifically into a weird many-people-process. The diagram showing the different participants. I am putting together a document listing why this will not work. Here are the obvious ones: 1. There are product owner agents (an obvious WTF), who report to the product owner: causing dilution of decision making capability 2. There is a role that looks similar to a manager in the traditional approach - development manager: an obvious attempt at command-and-control model 3. The ScrumMaster's role includes collecting timesheets, which are used to track progress instead of burndown charts: detrimental to agile's efforts to build teams with motivated individuals Leaving the question "how would you convince the management?", my question is more at, "what else do you see as failures in this/similar 'tailored Scrum approaches'? EDIT: The diagram might use a few more details 1. The development manager is not part of the development team, with not very clearly defined responsibilities, except: developer performance assessemnt, recruitment, etc., 2. There are more than two teams (with ScrumMaster+development manager+dev team) with the same product owner for all teams!

• Is there such thing as a "theory of system integration"?

  There is a plethora of different programs, servers, and in general technologies in use in organizations today. We, programmers, have lots of different tools at our disposal to help solve various different data, and communication challenges in an organization. Does anyone know if anyone has done an serious thinking about how systems are integrated? Let me give an example: Hypothetically, let's say I own a company that makes specialized suits a'la Iron Man. In the area of production, I have CAD tools, machining tools, payroll, project management, and asset management tools to name a few. I also have nice design space, where designers show off their designs on big displays, some touch, some traditional. Oh, and I also have one of these new fangled LEED Platinum buildings and it has number of different computer controlled systems, like smart window shutters that close when people are in the room, a HVAC system that adjusts depending on the number of people in the building, etc. What I want to know is if anyone has done any scientific work on trying to figure out how to hook all these pieces together, so that say my access control system is hooked to my payroll system, and my phone system allowing my never to swipe a time card, and to have my phone follow me throughout the building. This problem is also more than a technology challenge. Every technology implementation enables certain human behaviours, so the human must also be considered as a part of the system. Has anyone done any work in how effectively weave these components together? FYI: I am not trying to build a system. I want to know if anyone has thoroughly studied the process of doing a large integration project, how they develop their requirements, how they studied the human behaviors, etc.

• Keyboard-shortcut key-press-detection sensitivity settings

  last week I switched from Ubuntu 10.10 to 12.04 and after setting up my keyboard shortcuts, e.g., CTRL+ALT+E for my favorite editor and CTRL+ALT+X for the terminal, I noticed that the behavior when pressing the appropriate keys changed somehow. I know this is very subjective and I am not 100% percent sure if I am suddenly just too lazy when using my keyboard, but here is what I noticed: To run your shortcuts, you usually press the modifiers first and in addition press the alphanum key. Now, if I hold the modifiers down very consciously and press the alphanum key afterwards everything works fine. However, I noticed that I may often release the modifiers a bit too early. In Ubuntu 10.10 (metacity/compiz) my keyboard shortcuts would still execute and my tools would pop up. This does not work anymore in 12.04. Nevertheless, I still believe the old behavior to be more intuitive and would like to have it back. I a nutshell: Is there a parameter to control the shortcut-key-press detection behavior? I already searched the ubuntu keyboard options and searched for "keyboard" in gconf-editor but could not find any hints so far.
