• Is there an easy way to configure an Ubuntu system to function as a proxy/file server from behind an NAT?

  Sorry for the long question, but the situation/desire is quite complex. Here is my setup: I have a laptop which I carry around everywhere and I have a desktop sitting at home, connected to the internet through a router using NAT. My objective is to create a connection from my laptop to my desktop that can allow me to (in order of priority): Use the desktop as a proxy server Access files on the desktop remotely Control said desktop from the laptop using VNC or similar. Now here is the scene. I have already looked up and tried several ways to achieve the above goals. Teamviewer - I used it and didn't like it. This is not an option. SSH - This seems ideal, I have figured a way to use this for both proxy and file sharing. However, I am currently unable to connect it due to the NAT. I have a separate thread trying to get that to work here. VPN - I've figured out how to use this method for proxy, but not file sharing. However this faces the same problem as the above: I can't get it to connect through the NAT. Does anyone have any other solutions for what I want? Otherwise, if there are solutions to connecting through the NAT, please tell me (in the other thread). Thanks

• Unable To Get Sound Working to External Speaker on HP TouchSmart 320 on 11.04 or 11.10

  This is an HP TouchSmart 320, model number 320-1200m. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04. I have installed Windows, and with Windows 7 installed, all audio hardware works properly, so this isn't a hardware fault. I've looked at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto and have been unable to find my card in http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt . I have tried adding almost every conceivable model in the line "options snd-hda-intel model=MODEL" line I added to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. Update 2011-11-09 2:31 PM PST: I've gone to Control Center - Sound Preferences to attempt settings that make sound work. The "Hardware" tab shows one device: "Internal Audio 1 Output / 1 Input Analog Stereo Duplex." There are two output profiles listed in the selection box at the bottom of the tag: Analog Stereo Duplex and Analog Stereo Output. Neither cause sound to emit from the speakers. I've also run alsamixer on the command-line and ensured that everything is set to maximum and nothing is muted. Update 2011-11-09 5:15 PM PST: I've replicated the exact same symptoms in 11.10. • Dell Latitude E4300 TouchPad - Odd Behavior

  I'm seeing some intermittent behavior on the touchpad. First it wasn't working at all. Then during restart, for a little while it seemed like the buttons attached to the joystick and external mouse were both swapped left/right. Then I went in to the dell touchpad control and disabled the touchpad and re-enabled it and nothing happened. Then a short while after disabling the joystick the touch pad started working. So I restarted to see if it would keep the settings and before login, the touchpad appeared to work, then after login it stopped working for a few minutes while login continued. Then after the login was almost completed it started to work again. It appeared to have retained the settings for the disabled joystick. It seems like perhaps there are conflicting mouse drivers trying to simultaneously or similar. This doesn't seem normal for the touchpad to be disabled for so long after login. What steps should I take to ensure the drivers are right?

• Should I cache the data or hit the database?

  I have not worked with any caching mechanisms and was wondering what my options are in the .net world for the following scenario. We basically have a a REST Service where the user passes an ID of a Category (think folder) and this category may have lots of sub categories and each of the sub categories could have 1000 of media containers (think file reference objects) which contain information about a file that may be on a NAS or SAN server (files are videos in this case). The relationship between these categories is stored in a database together with some permission rules and meta data about the sub categories. So from a UI perspective we have a lazy loaded tree control which is driven by the user by clicking on each sub folder (think of Windows explorer). Once they come to a URL of the video file, they then can watch the video. The number of users could grow into the 1000s and the sub categories and videos could be in the 10000s as the system grows. The question is should we carry on the way it is currently working where each request hits the database or should we think about caching the data? We are on using IIS 6/7 and Asp.net.

  How do you repair/reinstall Fedora without deleting any existing partitions or data? I was attempting to upgrade some old Fedora 13 servers to 17, following the instructions in the wiki. After the 14-15 upgrade, rebooting resulted in the output: Dropping to debug shell. sh: can't access tty; job control turned off dracut:/# Running dmesg also shows: dracut Warning: No root device "block:/dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root" found Googling shows this error is typically related to some weird RAID issues, but my server is a virtual machine not using any RAID. Using a rescue CD, I can chroot /mnt/sysimage, and all packages and data still seems to be there. How do I make the system bootable again?

• What reasons are there to reduce the max-age of a logo to just 8 days? [closed]

  Most websites set max-age=31536000 (1 year) on the Cache-control headers of static assets such as logo images. Examples: YouTube Yahoo Twitter BBC But there is a notable exception: Google's logo has max-age=691200 (8 days). I've checked the headers on the Google logo in the past, and it definitely used to be 1 year. (Also, it used to be part of a sprite, and now it is a standalone logo image, but that's probably another question...) What could be valid technical reasons why they would want to reduce its cache lifetime to just 8 days? Google's homepage is one of the most carefully optimised pages in the world, so I imagine there's a good reason. Edit: Please make sure you understand these points before answering: Nobody uses short max-age lifetimes to allow modifying a static asset in future. When you modify it, you just serve it at a different URL. So no, it's nothing to do with Google doodles. Think about it: even if Google didn't understand this basic trick of HTTP, 8 days still wouldn't be appropriate, as only those users who don't have the original logo cached would see the doodle on doodle-day – and then that group of users would go on seeing the doodle for the following 8 days after Google changed it back :) Web servers do not worry about "filling up" the caches of clients (or proxies). The client manages this by itself – when it hits its own storage limit, it just starts dropping the lowest priority items to make space for new items. The priority score is based on the question "How likely am I to benefit from having cached this URL?", which is nothing to do with what max-age value the server sent when the URL was originally requested; it's a heuristic based on the "frecency" of requests for that URL. The max-age simply lets the server set a cut-off point – the time at which the client is supposed to discard the item regardless of how often it's being re-used. It would be very nice and trusting of a downstream client/proxy to rely on all origin servers "holding back" from filling up their caches, but I don't think we live in that world ;)

• Is it possible to tunnel ICMP over TCP?

  I don't want to tunnel TCP over ICMP (as ptunnel does), I want to go the other way around. I'm in the situation where I have TCP (HTTP) connectivity to a machine but an internal firewall over which I have no control is swallowing pings. The monitoring software I'm using appears to determine connectivity by attempting to send a ping before it tries to just connect to the web service on the target machine. It's failing this ping test and giving up. I believe if I could fool my monitoring software into thinking pings were getting through, it would then connect to the web service and be on its merry way. Anyone know how I can do this? I have SSH and root access on the destination machine.

• Why does my screen dim on a desktop installation of Windows 7?

  Periodically, while using my Windows 7 Pro desktop installation, the screen suddenly dims. The brightness is about 75% normal (estimate). It's as if I am in a power-saving mode on a laptop running on batteries. But this is a full desktop installation. I know it is not a hardware glitch or monitor adjustment issue because the Windows cursor is still bright white while everything else goes dim. The Control Panel Power Options have not been changed. They are set to "Balanced [active]" and I have tried restoring the default settings. Flipping through the power and display settings, everything looks "normal." There is no screen saver or power-off-after settings apparent. Rebooting the system resets everything to full brightness but I can't find a way to restore it in Windows or to keep it from happening in the first place. Suggestions?

• Importing tab delimited file into array in Visual Basic 2013 [migrated]

  I am needing to import a tab delimited text file that has 11 columns and an unknown number of rows (always minimum 3 rows). I would like to import this text file as an array and be able to call data from it as needed, throughout my project. And then, to make things more difficult, I need to replace items in the array, and even add more rows to it as the project goes on (all at runtime). Hopefully someone can suggest code corrections or useful methods. I'm hoping to use something like the array style sMyStrings(3,2), which I believe would be the easiest way to control my data. Any help is gladly appreciated, and worthy of a slab of beer.   I have a dell studio 1555 laptop with a GPU inside. The details are below; Hardware details Software details I can play games in widescreen in Vista, but not in 7. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. I have the latest Catalyst Control Center. Instead of widescreen, the games are running in a classic style, say 1024x768 ratio. When I play need for speed underground, the maximum possible resolution is 1024x768 (all other games are like this). I have no problem with HD videos and anything else. How can I fix this? • How to organize a larger project with several sub-projects and their dependencies?

  As a software developer until now, I've mostly worked on projects that were quite "monolithic" with hardly any dependencies on other projects, without building automation (no Make, Ant, Maven, etc.) and kept on a simple version control system (mostly Subversion) with just a few easily managed version branches. Now together with some friends I'm planning a project that is intended to run on multiple platforms (mostly mobile: Android, iOS, Kindle, Windows, etc.), thus written in several languages and on different development platforms. This will lead to many dependencies: All projects sharing the same resources (e.g. images) or projects dependent on each other (e.g. a core Java library project used by the Android and other Java based implementations). So what I need is some basic information on how to answer questions such as: How would the VCS be structured? Would a client-base or a decentralized VCS be better? How to decide building automation system(s) to use? Since this quite an open question I guess for now it would be great if you could point me to any books or web resources that you can recommend for this topic.

• Dual monitors, screen resolution, xorg.conf.d

  I do a lot of RTFM but this one has got me stuck. I have Ubuntu Studio 12.04 Precise Pangolin with XFCE as its default desktop. My old HIS ATI Radeon 9250 graphics card was adding red crud across the screen with the generic driver, but downloading the proprietary "fglrx" driver makes it work cleanly. The trouble is the Catalyst control centre refuses to recognise my old card so I must do some manual configuring to make sure both the DVI and VGA monitors are capable of the correct screen resolution (both 1280x1024) and a dual display. It used to be easier to just edit the existing xorg.conf file and add another resolution and so forth, but now there are automatic xorg.conf.d directories (more than one) with scant documentation. Creating a generic xorg.conf with a terminal command creates every setting imaginable. What I want to do is create the simplest conf file which just tells the system the following: My VGA monitor can do 1280x1024 60Hz The two monitors together may be 2560x1024 width The VGA monitor on the right I might need to specify Xinerama if it's needed Thank you. • How do I stop sound coming from my speakers with a faulty headphone socket?

  On my laptop, I have a faulty headphone socket, so when I insert headphones into it, the speakers do not mute. I can confirm that this problem is caused by faulty hardware and not software as when I twist the headphone jack, the speakers come on and off according to the movements. On previous versions of Ubuntu, I worked around this problem by going into alsamixer and disabling "Auto-Mute Mode", and then going into the sound settings and choosing "Analog Headphones". However, on 12.04, no such option exists, rendering my headphones unusable with no way to work around the problem. I momentarily thought I had this problem fixed when I installed PulseAudio Volume Control from the Software Centre. I selected the Output Devices tab, and under "Built-in Audio Analogue Stereo" I selected "Headphones" for the port. However, this almost randomly seems to change back to "Speakers", despite me setting "Auto-Mute Mode" as disabled. Basically, I would like a way to permanently mute the speakers so only the headphones will play sound, without it losing my settings. It is ridiculous that such a simple setting has been taken away to "simplify" the user interface.

• ASP.NET MVC hosting recommendations

  I'm looking for recommendations for hosting an asp.net MVC application. Obviously, we need to be able to have access to configure IIS directly - I'd prefer not to have to go thru a control panel. The web server needs to have a dedicated IP, since some clients will be accessing it via IP. We need at least a SQLServer 2005 database, ideally on the same box. Load and usage will be pretty low, so a virtual machine will probably be fine. Does any one have any recommendations that meet the above constraints?

• How can I discourage the use of Access?

  Lets pretend that a very large company (revenue numbers with more than 8 figures) is looking to do a refresh on a software system, particularly the dashboard used by employees. This system was originally put together in the early 1990's to handle inventory tracking and storage across a variety of facilities (10+). Since this large company is now in the process of implementing some of these inventory processes with SAP they are in need of a major refresh. The existing system: Microsoft Access project performs dashboard duties Unique shipping/receiving configurations at different facilities require unique forms and queries within the Access project Uses 3rd party libraries referenced by Access to directly interface with at control system (read: motors, conveyors, and counters) Individual SQL Server 2000 instances (some traces of pre-update SQL Server 6.0 documents) at each facility The Issue: This system started as a home brewed inventory tracking scheme with a single internal sponsor who is still in charge of the technical direction. The original sponsor prescribing the desired deliverables that are being called for in the current RFP. The RFP describes a system based around a single Access project. Any suggestion that Access is ill suited for a project of this scope are shot down under the reasoning that "it works for the scope now". Are there any case studies, notices, or statements that can be used to disuade this potential customer from repeating their mistake? Does Microsoft make any statements directly about when it is highly recommended to ditch Access?

• Small-scale database options for .NET

  I have a .NET 4.0/WPF based application I've developed and maintain for my company that acts as a friendly GUI central-point-of-information, combining information pulled from a couple of SQL databases, as well as CSV exports from a few other applications. I would like to build out my own database to support the entirety of the information that the application accesses, so that I could have a service running on my server that would read in necessary remote SQL info and file exports, to provide the user's application with a single database to connect to, as well as to remove all of the file handling currently involved in the program (copying new CSV resources from network location, reading them into memory each launch.) I have complete control and flexibility here as long as the user's experience isn't affected, and this is as much a learning experience as it is tidying up. Caveat being, I don't have much in the way of a budget. Right now I recognize my options to be: SQL Express - I'm comfortable with the server setup, I like ADO.NET and LINQ to SQL. I feel that I have the least to learn here, but it would let me focus on SQL in a familiar environment. Perhaps in conjunction with Entity Framework? MongoDB - I don't know a whole lot about, but I've heard the name enough to make me curious. Brief research seems friendly enough, and there is .NET support. I like working with open source projects. My questions are: What's popular and extensible right now? I'm not far from starting to job-hunt, and I'd like this project to be relevant going forward. What am I missing? Pros, cons? Other options? What plays well with .NET? What are the things I should be considering, the questions I should be asking, when making a decision like this? Thanks for your time.

• Broken characters in filenames only in some directories

  We have a web server running CentOS 5.8 that uses SVN for version control. When trying to switch to the latest revision, we got an error about the filenames of files in an upload directory: svn: Error converting entry in directory 'adm/emails/upload' to UTF-8 svn: Valid UTF-8 data (hex: 54 79) followed by invalid UTF-8 sequence (hex: f6 6b 69 72) Upon investigating, we noticed there were some files that had broken filenames: $ ls ~/public_html/adm/emails/upload/ Ty?el?m?trendit.csv Ty?kirja1.csv To get the update completed quickly, we simply mved the files into our home directory. Surprisingly, their filenames looked fine in their new location: $ ls ~/ Työelämätrendit.csv Työkirja1.csv After the update we moved them back to where they were and their filenames were broken again. What could cause this and how can we fix it? The system's locale is set to LANG=en_US.UTF-8.

  I have some filename with some Unicode character in it. All filenames on Mac OS X are UTF8 encoded. Also $LANG is set to en_US.UTF-8. • Zoom Layer centered on a Sprite

  I am in process of developing a small game where a space-ship travels through a layer (doh!), in some situations the spaceship comes close to an enemy space ship, and the whole layer is zoomed in on the two with the zoom level being dependent on the distance between the ship and the enemy. All of this works fine. The main question, however, is how do I keep the zoom being centered on the center point between the two space-ships and make sure that the two are not off-screen? • Problem with creating table on phpMyAdmin database

  Hello all, I'm running a phpMyAdmin Database on my web package on a 1and1-hosted server. I've managed to set up a database in the control panel, have uploaded all to root/phpmyadmin and changed the config.ini.php file to point at 1and1's database server (because that's the way they do it). I can go to the web interface and get to the main page, but all it shows is the database name and I can't find how to create any tables. I know it's a long shot but I'm almost out of ideas. Also, 1and1 have their own phpmyadmin panel, which is pretty annoying to use, and a 1and1 webdatabase which I have barely looked at. Help and suggestions much appriciated.

• Forwarding emails to nonexisting users/aliases to external mail server

  I'm in the works of installing a postfix mailserver on a machine currently being used as web server. As of right now, I've got it working as far as that I can send and receive emails using telnet through port 25. However, as my customer is concerned with downtime, I'd like to setup all the accounts one by one over time, and making sure it works, rather than just cutting the cord to the old mail server and start creating new accounts on the new system. How can I add the domain customer.com to my mail server and just add something like [email protected] to the users and aliases-lists without the web server trying to send all emails with the @customer.com domain to the new mail server? I'm running ubuntu, using postfix and postfix-mysql on the new machine, the old mail server is on a hosted environment somewhere else, where I don't have any control.
