• Group policy issues

  We are having an issue on one of our clients relatively new sbs installs. The domain consists of a single SBS 2011 server with 4 windows 7 clients and 3 xp clients. Most of the time everything is fine however roughly every 3 days windows 7 clients start timing out when trying to receive computer group policy. This results in hour long delays before getting to the login screen in the morning. This is accompanied by event ID 6006, win login errors stating it took 3599 seconds to process policy. Once they've booted they can log in without issue however gpupdate fails again on computer policy and gpresult comes back with access denied, even when run as domain admin... At this point if we restart the server the network is fine for 3 days. I thought perhaps it might be ipv6 or smb2, but disabling ipv6 on the clients doesn't help and the clients can browse the sysvol folder freely on smb2 anyway. Does anyone have any ideas or routes I can take to further diagnose the issue? Thanks in advance :)

  We have a web application running on IIS 7.5 with the identity of the Custom Application Pool set to NetworkService. This was working fine for some days and now the application pool has gone in to a stopped state. The following error message is displayed in the Event Viewer Faulting application name: w3wp.exe, version: 7.5.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5bcd2b Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.1.7600.16559, time stamp: 0x4ba9b29c Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x00038c19 Faulting process id: 0xa28 Faulting application start time: 0x01cbb2e5707aa2b2 Faulting application path: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\inetsrv\w3wp.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ntdll.dll Report Id: ae3f0610-1ed8-11e0-abf8-000c297f918f We are able to start the application pool only after changing the identity to LocalSystem. Why does the application pool fails to run with identity set to NetworkService. Can any one help us resolving this issue?

• Data transfer between "main" site and secured virtual subsite

  I am currently working on a C# ASP.Net 3.5 website I wrote some years ago which consists of a "main" public site, and a sub-site which is our customer management application, using forms-based authentication. The sub-site is set up as a virtual folder in IIS and though it's a subfolder of "main", it functions as a separate web app which handles CRUD access to our customer database and is only accessible by our staff. The main site currently includes a form for new leads to fill in, which generates an email to our sales staff so they can contact them and convince them to become customers. If that process is successful, the staff manually enter the information from the email into the database. Not surprisingly, I now have a new requirement to feed the data from the new lead form directly into the database so staff can just check a box for instance to turn the lead into a customer. My question therefore is how to go about doing this? Possible options I've thought of: Move the new lead form into the customer database subsite (with authentication turned off). Add database handling code to the main site. (No, not seriously considering this duplication of effort! :) Design some mechanism (via REST?) so a webpage outside the customer database subsite can feed data into the customer database How to organise the code for this situation, preferably with extensibility in mind, and particularly are there any options I haven't thought of?

• shared web hosting architecture in a university setting

  We're in the process of creating a shared webhosting infrastructure for our university. Departments within the university can host their sites on this infrastructure. We're thinking of setting up multiple, load balanced web servers attached to shared storage (for web content and Apache config files). There will also be database servers behind these web servers. Does anyone have any other suggestions about this? Any recommendations for an alternative setup? Would having cPanel/WHM/Plesk be a good idea to automate account creation/maintenance?

• Development teams do not scale

  Recently I have been thinking about how development teams don't scale very well. The bigger a team and the product get, the more time the team spends fixing software bugs. This means they spend more time doing troubleshooting and debugging as the grow. The problem is that since developers don't typically have access to production servers, there is a bottleneck in the process when doing production troubleshooting.For a team that has 10 developers, I would guess than 0-2 of them have access to production servers. If that team grows to 20 people, it is probably the same 0-2 people that have production access still. This means that those 2 key people are a bottleneck and the team does not scale correctly as you add more resources. All those new developers want is to help track down and fix software bugs, but they don't have the visibility to do it. So they end up being less productive and frustrated because they really want to fix the problems. The people who do have production access end up spending too much of their time doing troubleshooting instead of working on new projects.The solution is to remove the bottlenecks and get those people working on more important tasks.   i have an ASP .net application with sql server database, and i am wondering if you can give your ideas on how to troubleshoot the following issue: i can insert / update / delete from any table, but i have one page that uses transactions to insert into different tables. the c# code is correct and very simple, but it fails. i used the sql profiler to see how my app interacts with the DB, especially that the app is using stored procedures, i can catch the exec procedure statement and run it manually from SSMS and it works fine, but the same stored procedure fails from the application!!! which lead me to think that issue is coming from the user account and settings, i am no expert in sql server and wondering if anyone can explain how to verify the required settings for user account. thanks EDIT: in web.config here is how i reference my connection <connectionStrings> <add name="Conn" connectionString="Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=myDB;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=DbUser;Password=password1254_3" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"> </connectionstring> EDIT: i will try to describe the process here: 1- i begin a transaction 2- i call a stored proc to insert (which succeeds) and return the scope identity ( that will be used in the next step) 3- i call another stored procedure to insert some more info + scope identity from step 2, which is a foreign key here 4- i get error, foreign key violation 5- transaction rolled back, now tables empty again... thanks

So, I'm looking at this: internet - modem - server - switch - wired clients | |---- wireless router - wireless clients How do I set up the server to enable this? Also, what set ups do the clients need. The server is Ubuntu 9.04 and the clients are a mix of Windows XP / 7, Ubuntu and printers. I believe this new set up will allow me to control access to the internet, which would be useful.

• No GUI boot; startx error, I suspect no filesystem corruption.

  Till yesterday, my Ubuntu 9.10 was working fine. I had watched a movie using vlc. I had also charged my ipod using the laptop. Today, when I started it, I automatically booted into command line. There seems to be no filesystem corruption etc as I can view/open (text) files. Before the CLI appeared, the screen blinked with a cursor, then the white Ubuntu logo flashed, and then I got the CLI login prompt. After logging in, if I try startx, to start gnome, I get the following error after a few seconds: giving up xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error* The same error comes up, even if I use sudo, or if I change my directory to '/' before using startx, and also when, from the grub, using the recovery mode option to load into CLI, and then trying startx. On trying command 'xinit', I get "Server error" Also, on trying GDM, I get 2 errors. I cannot connect to the internet in this state. Thanks for any help. I am using Dell Inspiron 1440, no special graphics card.

• Why Matlab in screen in Linux on PuTTY terminates itself after closing PuTTY session?

  I connected to a linux server with PuTTY and start a screen session, and start matlab with: matlab -nodesktop Then, I run my matlab code as usual. The code will run for hours. So to test whether screen works, I start another PuTTY session and run top. Then, I close PuTTY session with still-running Matlab (top shows Matlab at 100% CPU usage) in screen. To my surprise, my Matlab process vanished after I close the aforementioned session. I've tried this a few times, and it seems the same thing happened. screen -ls shows that my screens are there but detached. top also shows that my matlab is not there. What might be the possible cause of this? Doesn't screen normally should keep on running even I terminate my PuTTY session?

• Windows 7 randomly installs an "Unknown Device"

  Rarely (several days to weeks between occurrences,) and seemingly at random, I get a balloon notification from Windows 7 (x64 SP1 Home Premium) that it is installing hardware for me. However, no new hardware has been installed or plugged in! When I click the balloon it doesn't give me any useful information: Looking in the event log, I find this entry: Event ID: 20001 Source: UserPnp Task Category: 7005 Message: Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\usb.inf_amd64_neutral_153b489118ee37b8\usb.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\6&3AF9A177&0&0060&&02 with the following status: 0x0. It appears to be USB related. My motherboard has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 controllers. My keyboard and mouse are plugged into the 2.0 slots and the data/recharge cable for a tablet (but not the tablet itself) was plugged in to the 3.0 slot. No other USB devices have been attached for several days/reboots. Why is Windows doing this?

  I am interested to hear discussion of the proposition summarised in the title. As we know programming language constructions admit a vast number of isomorphisms. In some languages in some places in the translation process some of these isomorphisms are implemented, whilst others require code to be written to implement them. For example, in my language Felix, the isomorphism between a type T and a tuple of one element of type T is implemented, meaning the two types are indistinguishable (identical). Similarly, a tuple of N values of the same type is not merely isomorphic to an array, it is an array: the isomorphism is implemented by the compiler. Many other isomorphisms are not implemented for example there is an isomorphism expressed by the following client code: match v with | ((?x,?y),?z = x,(y,z) // Felix match v with | (x,y), - x,(y,z) (* Ocaml *) As another example, a type constructor C of int in Felix may be used directly as a function, whilst in Ocaml you must write a wrapper: let c x = C x Another isomorphism Felix implements is the elimination of unit values, including those in tuples: Felix can do this because (most) polymorphic values are monomorphised which can be done because it is a whole program analyser, Ocaml, for example, cannot do this easily because it supports separate compilation. For the same reason Felix performs type-class dispatch at compile time whilst Haskell passes around dictionaries. There are some quite surprising issues here. For example an array is just a tuple, and tuples can be indexed at run time using a match and returning a value of a corresponding sum type. Indeed, to be correct the index used is in fact a case of unit sum with N summands, rather than an integer. Yet, in a real implementation, if the tuple is an array the index is replaced by an integer with a range check, and the result type is replaced by the common argument type of all the constructors: two isomorphisms are involved here, but they're implemented partly in the compiler translation and partly at run time.

• Is "as long as it works" the norm?

  Hi, My last shop did not have a process. Agile essentially meant they did not have a plan at all about how to develop or manage their projects. It meant "hey, here's a ton of work. Go do it in two weeks. We're fast paced and agile." They released stuff that they knew had problems. They didn't care how things were written. There were no code reviews--despite there being several developers. They released software they knew to be buggy. At my previous job, people had the attitude as long as it works, it's fine. When I asked for a rewrite of some code I had written while we were essentially exploring the spec, they denied it. I wanted to rewrite the code because code was repeated in multiple places, there was no encapsulation and it took people a long time to make changes to it. So essentially, my impression is this: programming boils down to the following: Reading some book about the latest tool/technology Throwing code together based on this, avoiding writing any individual code because the company doesn't want to "maintain custom code" Showing it and moving on to the next thing, "as long as it works." I've always told myself that next job I'm going to get a better shop. It never happens. If this is it, then I feel stuck. The technologies always change; if the only professional development here is reading the latest MS Press technology book, then what have you built in 10 years but a superficial knowledge of various technologies? • How do I install kivy?

  I was trying to install Kivy (by following the instructions here). I downloaded and installed all packages where the installation process went through without giving me any errors. However, when later I enter below command; sudo easy_install kivy It looked like it was going to work but it ends with an error by displaying following lines, which I don't comprehend: Detected compiler is unix /tmp/easy_install-BtOA_u/Kivy-1.8.0/kivy/graphics/texture.c:8:22: fatal error: pyconfig.h: No such file or directory #include "pyconfig.h" ^ compilation terminated. error: Setup script exited with error: command 'x86_64-linux-gnu-gcc' failed with exit status 1 I saw a similar question asked as; Problem with kivy installation. However, this didn't work for me though the question suggests installing libgles-mesa-dev-lts-raring which I did as below; sudo apt-get install libgles-mesa-dev-lts-raring which then gave below; E: Unable to locate package libgles-mesa-dev-lts-raring (sorry for being so specific and perhaps obvious, but I'm in the early stage of learning my way around linux). This user was running Ubuntu 12.04, and most other questions related to this I've seen came from people with a different release from mine, which has led me to believe that that is the reason why the suggestions to those didn't solve my problem.   On November 16, 2011 the source bundle for OpenJDK 6 b24 was published at http://download.java.net/openjdk/jdk6/. The main changes in b24 are the latest round of security updates (e.g. the security changes in jdk repo) and a few other fixes.  For more information see the detailed list of all the changes in OpenJDK 6 B24. Test Results: All the jdk regression tests run with  make test passed. cd jdk6 make make test Per Kelly's  B23 Release blog: The new process is - all the jdk regression tests run with make test should just pass. Over time we will fix the tests that have been excluded, possibly add more tests, and exclude tests that fail to demonstrate stability (with a bug filed against the test). • Be liberal in what you accept... or not?

  [Disclaimer: this question is subjective, but I would prefer getting answers backed by facts and/or reflexions] I think everyone knows about the Robustness Principle, usually summed up by Postel's Law: Be conservative in what you send; be liberal in what you accept. I would agree that for the design of a widespread communication protocol this may make sense (with the goal of allowing easy extension), however I have always thought that its application to HTML / CSS was a total failure, each browser implementing its own silent tweak detection / behavior, making it near impossible to obtain a consistent rendering across multiple browsers. I do notice though that there the RFC of the TCP protocol deems "Silent Failure" acceptable unless otherwise specified... which is an interesting behavior, to say the least. There are other examples of the application of this principle throughout the software trade that regularly pop up because they have bitten developpers, from the top off my head: Javascript semi-colon insertion C (silent) builtin conversions (which would not be so bad if it did not truncated...) and there are tools to help implement "smart" behavior: name matching phonetic algorithms (Double Metaphone) string distances algorithms (Levenshtein distance) However I find that this approach, while it may be helpful when dealing with non-technical users or to help users in the process of error recovery, has some drawbacks when applied to the design of library/classes interface: it is somewhat subjective whether the algorithm guesses "right", and thus it may go against the Principle of Least Astonishment it makes the implementation more difficult, thus more chances to introduce bugs (violation of YAGNI ?) it makes the behavior more susceptible to change, as any modification of the "guess" routine may break old programs, nearly excluding refactoring possibilities... from the start! And this is what led me to the following question: When designing an interface (library, class, message), do you lean toward the robustness principle or not ? I myself tend to be quite strict, using extensive input validation on my interfaces, and I was wondering if I was perhaps too strict.

• Rolling Back Microsoft CRM during testing

  Process related question: Currently we have a multi-tenant installation of MS CRM 4.0 on three servers, Dev, Test, and Live. We are actively working on customizing one of the tenants, but the others are static. During user testing, we often find it necessary to 'start fresh' in one of the tenants. Is it better to try and delete out the changes from the tenant (created accounts, leads, etc), or just revert the database to a backup from before the testing started? Is there compelling reasons why bulk delete is not advisable for MSCRM or that reverting the database frequently could cause issue?

• How to view bad blocks on mounted ext3 filesystem?

  I've ran fsck -c on the (unmounted) partition in question a while ago. The process was unattended and results were not stored anywhere (except badblock inode). Now I'd like to get badblock information to know if there are any problems with the harddrive. Unfortunately, partition is used in the production system and can't be unmounted. I see two ways to get what I want: Run badblocks in read-only mode. This will probably take a lot of time and cause unnecessary bruden on the system. Somehow extract information about badblocks from the filesystem iteself. How can I view known badblocks registered in mounted filesystem?

• USB flash drive unreadable after a few minutes on Windows 8

  I recently got a new computer with Windows 8. I a have a number of large backup files I am moving from my old PC to my new one. I was able to successfully copy the files to a couple 16 GB flash drives. When I try to copy the files to my new computer, the process starts just fine but after copying about 4 GB of files, the copy stops. If I look at the drive in explorer, the drive is there, but I just get a busy cursor that stays indefinitely if I click it. If I unplug the flash drive and plug it back in, everything is fine again... for a couple minutes. I've tried copying from both flash drives with the same result. I've also tested this on the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports on my motherboard with the same result (the drives are USB 2.0) It's also puzzling that this is happening since I previously used one of the same flash drives to install Windows 8 on this computer in the first place without any difficulty.
