• Cloud Computing - Multiple Physical Computers, One Logical Computer

  I know that you can set up multiple virtual machines per physical computer. I'm wondering if it's possible to make multiple physical computers behave as one logical unit? Fundamentally the way I imagine it working is that you can throw 10 computers into a facility one day. You've got one client that requires the equivalent of two computers worth, and 100 others that eat up the remaining 8. As demands change you're just reallocating logical resources, maybe the 2 computer client now requires a third physical system. You just add it to the cloud, and don't worry about sharding the database, or migrating data over to a new server. Can it work this way? If yes, why would anyone ever do things like hand partition their database servers anymore? Just add more computing resources. You scale horizontally with the hardware, but your server appears to scale vertically. There's no need to modify your application's supporting infrastructure to support multiple databases etc.

  Hi, I need to move all my sites on a server with IIS 6 to another one, that has same OS (Windows Server 20003) and same IIS version. I'm trying to understand which is the best way to do it. Searching on Google I've found that there are at least 2 methods, one uses IIS Migration Tool, and another Web Deployment Tool. I don't know which method is best, it also seems that both methods can export one site at once, and I have about 100 sites hosted. What would you do?

• How to make FileZilla open all the required files with one click

  Is there any way of configuring FileZilla so that I can open all the files on a server that I use to edit with just one click. For example if the files are like this: /home/abc/def/one.txt /home/abc/def/yet/another/directory/two.txt /home/abc/def/ghi/yet/another/directory/three.txt Then it is very time-consuming to navigate through each directory and open the required files. These are only 3 files but what if we have around 10 to 20 files? Yes, copying the path of the directories is one thing. But something that is built-in so that I can just click a button like open all the required files of this connection and it opens all the files in the editor (as set in FileZilla preferences) then that would be great!

• Multi serial devices on one port

  I am developing one software for managing parking lot. System is designed to use four HID RFID devices for authorization clients on gates. Each device should be connected to server by Serial port RS232. Now I wondering is there some device or method to join all that devices on one device and after that to I have only one RS232 cable connected to server. My problem is in that RFID card readers are simple (stupid) devices and there I am not able to change anything, but Ill like to know from which specific device is coming input. What Ill want to do with that new device which need to join four readers is to add suffix or prefix to string that sent from RFID card reader. So I can identify device that is sending card number to my server. I am developing my system on Win platforms.

  As far as I know in order to use two subnets on one physical cable VLAN's are recommended. However, is it possible to achieve this (i.e: two subnets on one physical network) like 192.168.1.0/24 and 10.0.0.0/8 networks. What kind of problems or hidden rocks this way contains? With VLAN's it's possible to better isolate so users wouldn't easly sniff the other network. But in my environment it's okay if user on one subnet could listen to the traffic on another network. Is it the only problem?

• Limit disk I/O one program creates?

  Hardware: one virtualization server. Dual Nehalem, 24GB RAM, 2 TB mirrored HD. Software: Debian, KVM, virt-manager on the server with several virtual machines that use Linux too. 2 TB Disk is a big LVM, each VM gets a logical volume and makes its own partitions in that. Problem: One of the programs that runs on one of the VMs creates huge disk load. This never was an issue, because the program never ran on such a powerful hardware. Now the CPUs are fast, and lots of I/O is the result. We cant do much against that at the moment, because the tool is a black box. On the other hand, the speedy computation is welcome. The program creates about 5 GB of temp files which get overwritten during the next iteration. Question: How can we limit the disk I/O for the process?

  I download multiple podcasts from one source, eg, five episodes of Naked Scientists. I want to listen to one only, but when the first finishes it automatically goes to the second, and third etc. I want to listen to just one episode at a time and have the iTouch turn off when it is finished (this is a sleep-aid for my insomnia...I don't want it playing all night !)   My VAIO advised me to switch to a White Background, to reduce power consumption. But it seems contradictory to common logic. Its like saying a brighter Torch consuming less than a dimmer one. Common Logic says that, Screen is BLACK when not using any POWER, so displaying black color should not consume any power (because without powering any pixel it gives black color) Also a white screen gives me more light than a darker one, so it should use more Energy. White Wallpaper = More Light Output = More Electrical Energy Consumed Black Wallpaper = Less Light = Less Electricity Consumed My question is - Is there anything wrong with the above argument ? A Lighter Wallpaper consumes less power than a Darker one. Is it true ? If yes, Why ?

• How to put several files in one archive?

  I have 10 files which I need to send per e-mail. It is inconvenient for me all 10 files and it will be inconvenient for the receiver to download all 10 files (it can be annoying to do the same operation 10 times). I would like to put all 10 files into one files (I think it can be done as archive). How can I do it? Important details. I am working in the Windows 7 and prefer to do the mentioned operation from the command line. In the directory, where I have my 10 files, I have many other files which I would not like to include into the archive. The files are small, so compression rate and size do not play any role. I just one to have an easy way to put 10 files into one and then easily to extract these 10 files.

Now, I like to know if it is possible to configure a reverse proxy for only one server /application (in this case our web intranet). Our problem is Intranet call another aplication inside same intranet server and another internal servers, and the only way that I know to publish this resources is make a reverse proxy in our dmz apache for all apllications servers, but I like that from our DMZ reverse apache only intranet will be called, and other applications will be called by intranet server, and not reverse proxy. I like to configure with this system for security reason, and only allow external access to one server. I have configured With Debian Squeeze and apache 2.2 It is possible? How?

• IBM x226 server with Windows 2003 freezing and showing one HDD degraded

  We have an IBM x226 server with Windows 2003 running on it. For weeks it's been very slow and it freezes at least once each day. At the boot it show message "degraded" for one HDD and optimal for other HDDs. We have 4 HDDs in it set up in Raid 1. HDD 1 - HDD 2, HDD 3 - HDD4. It seems that HDD2 is the one who is causing problems (showing degraded status). There's an amber led blinking on it together with the green one. We installed ServerRAID manager downloaded from IBM and it gave us option for "rebuild". But the server froze at some point and now it's rebuilding from start again. I've done some Googling and it says that it could be to failing HDD or some cache battery. How can we verify what is the cause of this?

  Hello all. Just upgraded from Exchange 2003 to 2010. Somehow, I have two mailbox databases on my single Exchange 2010 server. One database contains all of the mailboxes I had moved from the 2003 exchange server; the other contains two SystemMailboxes and one FederatedEmail box. I am just starting to get a grasp on the commands used in the EMS. I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction to move these three "system" mailboxes into my actual mailbox database so I can eliminate the second database. Just trying to sure up this one server before I role out my backup Exchange server. Thanks in advance! Your help and ideas are greatly appreciated as I try to make this setup as simple as possible.

• VPS hang when one Virtual CPU usage is 100%

  We are using Xen Center to manage all of our cPanel VPS servers. The hardware has two CPUs(Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU [email protected]) and 32GB memory. Each hardware has 4 cPanel VPS and each VPS has 8GB memory and 4 Virtual CPUS. Every one or two months, one of the VPS server will hang because one Virtual CPU usage is 100% and it couldn't release the CPU unless we use force reboot. We have 10 similar hardware, and this cause our server down almost every day. We have tried to avoid the Statistics Processing and Fantastico update during the night, but the problem still happens randomly. I can not find anything in the server log when it hangs. Any clue? Thank you.

• Dual 9500GT video cards, one works

  I have two video cards, both are PCIe 512MB Nvidia 9500GTs. One is an Evga and the other is another brand. If I put them both in, the one in the top slot will work (either card). The one in the lower slot says Code 12, not enough resources to use this device. I've tried disabling Firewire and a few other things in an attempt to get more "resources". Intel DP45SG motherboard. 4G Ram. 64bit Vista. Q8200 CPU. I do not have the SLI connector.

They have internet connection from small ISP located in the same building, all I see is one CAT5 cable with 2 RJ45 connectors. One is going to WAN port on the router and another into LAN port on the same router. This is the only way for internet connection to work.   I'm using an NVIDIA Quadra FX 1700 card and have a dual monitor system. I want to maximize a window so that it is maximized in one monitor not across both monitors but I don't seem to have that as an option. Right now I just minimize & expand it so it fills one monitor at a time. Any suggestions? I'm using Windows XP Professional on a desktop. Maybe it's not possible since it seems that both monitors are connected to the graphics card and Windows only sees one monitor.

  Hi there, in my iPhone application I am using simple Core Data Model with two entities (Item and Property): Item name properties Property name value item Item has one attribute (name) and one one-to-many-relationship (properties). Its inverse relationship is item. Property has two attributes the according inverse relationship. Now I want to show my data in table views on two levels. The first one lists all items; when one row is selected, a new UITableViewController is pushed onto my UINavigationController's stack. The new UITableView is supposed to show all properties (i.e. their names) of the selected item. To achieve this, I use a NSFetchedResultsController stored in an instance variable. On the first level, everything works fine when setting up the NSFetchedResultsController like this: -(NSFetchedResultsController *) fetchedResultsController { if (fetchedResultsController) return fetchedResultsController; // goal: tell the FRC to fetch all item objects. This seems to work, as error is still nil and the object gets saved (I can see the number of properties when logging the Item instance, see above). However, the delegate methods are not fired. This seems to me due to the possibly messed up fetchRequest(Controller). Any ideas? Did I mess up the second fetch request? Is this the right way to fetch all entities in a to-many-relationship for a particular instance at all?

• autocomplete not working on one sever, works on others

  I have Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and x86 running on various servers and auto complete works on all of them bar one. The issue: apt-<tab> would show a list of options but sudo apt-<tab> would not. After fiddling with it for a few hours i've found that /etc/bash_autocomplete did not exist. on the broken server. Copying the one from a working one it now works. but still not properly. sudo apt-get ins<tab> does not show do anything. listing the files in /etc/bash_autocomplete.d/ on the working server has about 50 files, and the broken one only two or three. i dont think that i can just copy these files though as it might show commands for things that are not even installed. TL;DR autocomplete broken, how can i fix it. Seems like its disabled somewhere, why is this EDIT: Ok, it was not ever installed... $ sudo apt-get install bash-completion Reading package lists...   I have an Acer Aspire S3 ultrabook. It comes with two separate drives, one 320 gb hdd and a 20 gb ssd, which Windows uses for hibernation. I formatted the SSD and installed Ubuntu on it. How do I format the SSD so that Windows recognizes the SSD as the hibernation drive, like the way it came out of the box? Acer really had an interesting way of using the SSD. I'm just trying to get the laptop ready to sell, so I figured I would get it back to normal.

  Hello, I have a list of date/timestamps, and I would like to plot these to a chart in Excel. What I'm looking for is a chart that shows "events per hour" or something similar. Can this be done easily if I just have one column of data (the list of timestamps)? I'm using excel 2007 and looking at two data sets. One is 56k events and the other 750, both over the span of a few days.
