• Does C# have a future in games development?

  I recently learned that the MMO Minecraft is powered by Java from a recent interview on CVG.co.uk on a possible collaboration between two former and now competing colleagues. In the interview he bluntly said that the founder of Minecraft is a Java coder and he is a C or C++ coder so they are incompatible with each other. So collaborating on future projects will be difficult. This got me thinking, If Java could do that? What does the future hold for MS very popular C# language and .Net platform as far as games or mainstream games development is concerned?

• Donald Ferguson says end-user programming is next big thing. Is it?

  You can guess how I came to ask this question... Anyway : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-11944966 Donald Ferguson claiming that his websphere was his biggest disaster and proclaiming that end-user programming will be the way forward. This genuinely spurs the question : what with current programming languages. Honestly, I don't think that end-user programming will go much beyond a rather rigid template where you can build some apps around. If you see how many people actually manage to understand the basic functionality of functions in EXCEL... Plus, I fail to see how complex and performant systems can be built in such an end-user programming language ( Visual Basic, anyone?) Nice to play around with, but for many applications they're just not the thing. So no worries for the old languages if you ask me. What's your ideas?

• How do I ask google not to index certain parts of my page?

  I was searching for an old review on my site today and I noticed that Google is indexing the headline text in my latest article list on every page that it appears, obviously I guess. The problem is if I search for my Dragon's Lair review specifically to my site like this http://www.google.co.za/search?sugexp=chrome,mod=9&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=site%3Alazygamer.net+dragons+lair+review Then it returns a ton of pages that aren't appropriate as they aren't related to the review at all. The reason why I care is that I have a second Dragon's Lair review that was posted years ago and now I can't find it. Is there a way to hint to google that certain text isn't relevant to the actual content on the page? is it a terrible idea?

• How to deal with a 'public' work environment?

  In the last 6 months, I have changed desks at my office 4 times. I don't mind, as it's due to expansion of the company and acquiring new office space and getting everybody settled. However, I truly miss the semi-private office I sat in 2 desks ago. I am now sitting in a large room with a number of other people. My problem with this isn't with my co-workers; everybody here is great. My problem is that based on the configuration of the room, no matter which desk I sit in, my monitors WILL be facing an open window. This causes a glare on my monitors, and it drives me crazy. I prefer a dark IDE theme as I find it easier on the eyes, however this just makes the glare that much worse. How should programmers cope with public office settings? Secondly, how should I cope with my specific problem? Should I give in and adopt a light IDE theme that will reduce the visibility of the glare but increase eye strain, or should I stick to my guns and find another solution?

  Last Saturday I went to 'Developer Developer Developer 10' on the Microsoft campus at Reading (UK). This is one of a series of regular events put on by the developer community for the developer community. The guys who organise these events put in a huge amount of time and effort into them and they are well worth getting to if you can.I enjoy these events because there's always something currently relevant but also I can get an insight into things I don't normally come across or work with.Having said that, it's web related things that always grab my attention and this year one of my favourite speakers, George Adamson, gave a session on 'Designing for mobile (aka designing for everything)'.   In Release 12, the General Ledger Transfer Program is no longer used. Use Create Accounting or Submit Accounting instead. Submit Accounting spawns the Revenue Recognition Process. The Create Accounting program does not. So if you create transactions with rules, then you would want to run Submit Accounting Process to spawn Revenue Recognition to create the distribution rows, which Create Accounting is then spawned to process to the GL. • Pair programming business logic with a non-IT person

  Have you have any experience in which a non-IT person works with a programmer during the coding process? It's like pair programming, but one person is a non-IT person that knows a lot about the business, maybe a process engineer with math background who knows how things are calculated and can understand non-idiomatic, procedural code. I've found that some procedural, domain-specific languages like PL/SQL are quite understandable by non-IT engineers. These person end up being co-authors of the code and guarantee the correctness of formulas, factors etc. I've found this kind of pair programming quite productive, this kind of engineer user feel they are also "owners" and "authors" of the code and help minimize misunderstanding in the communication process. They even help design the test cases. Is this practice common ? Does it have a name ? Have you had similar experiences ?

• Using Lighttpd: apache prox or direct connection?

  Hi, I'm optimizing a site by using lighttpd for the static media. I've found that a recommended solution is to use Apache Proxy to point to the lighttpd server. But, does that use up an Apache thread/process per request? In my setup, I've noticed that all my processes are used up, even though they aren't doing anything, CPU wise. To free up apache processes, I've configured lighttpd and the amount of processes needed is lowered significantly, Munin shows. However, I've set it up to connect directly to lighty, to prevent apache workers from server static media. My question is: when using Apache Proxy, does that also use up a process/worker?

• Integrated webcam not being detected

  I am having a problem with my laptops integrated cam. Its a brand new laptop and the cam worked in windows 8. But I dont do windows. So I installed Ubuntu 12.10 and the cam DID work... but I then went with 14.04 now and I get no webcam action. My laptop is ASUS X551CA-RI3N15. This is the results from the command...   Problem this code does not work Type t = typeof(ESRI.ArcGIS.Framework.AppRefClass); System.Object obj = Activator.CreateInstance(t); but yet this code Type t = Type.GetTypeFromCLSID(typeof(ESRI.ArcGIS.Framework.AppRefClass).GUID); System.Object obj = Activator.CreateInstance(t); Reason In the first variant the runtime tries to cast to AppRefClass . This is not possible. And in the second one, the runtime does not knows anything about AppRefClass. So it leave it as IUnknown.   (originally communicated by my co-worker Ralf)

• Connecting 2 ubuntu machines as a LAN

  Hi i am trying to connect 2 ubuntu computers as a LAN. In my current setup I have: One machine running ubuntu 11.10 with Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller While the other machine is running Ubuntu 12.04 with an Atheros Communications Inc AR8152 v1.1 Fast Ethernet The two machines are connected via a switch (Edimax ES-3205P). Unfortunately I still cannot connect the two machines together. Can somebody please show me what to do and how to go about solving this issue? Thank you ANSWERED All I had to do was set up both ip's maually, subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and left blank both gateway and DNS.

  It has been another fantastic year for TechEd North America.  I always love my time here.  First, I have to give a huge thank you to Ineta for giving me the opportunity to work the Ineta booth and BOF’s (birds of a feather).   I can not even begin to list how many fantastic leaders in the .Net space and Developers from all over I have met through Ineta at this event.  It has been truly amazing and great fun!! New Orlean’s has been awesome.  The night life is hoppin’.  In addition to enjoying a few (too many??) of the local hurricanes in New Orleans, I have hung out with some of the coolest people  Deepesh Mohnani, David Poll, Viresh, Alan Stephens, Shawn Wildermuth, Greg Leonardo, Doug Seven, Chris Willams, David Carley and some of our southcentral hero’s Jeffery Palermo, Todd Anglin, Shawn Weisfeld, Randy Walker, The midnight DBA’s, Zeeshan Hirani, Dennis Bottjer just to name a few. A big thanks to Microsoft and everyone that has helped to put TechEd together.  I have loved hanging out with people from the Silverlight and Expression Teams and have learned a ton.  I am ramped up and ready to take all that knowledge back to my co-workers and my community. I can not wait to see you all again next year in Atlanta!!! • How do you safely work around broken code? [closed]

  Once in a while, a co-worker will check-in bad code which blocks my application from initializing properly. To get around this problem quickly, I comment out the offending code. I then forget to uncomment the offending code at the time of my check-in, so I want to prevent this from happening again. Do you have any suggestions on how to: Disable bad code that stop you from working Prevent yourself from checking in unwanted changes? I'm currently using Visual Studio as my IDE and TFS as my source code repo.

• I have a problem with a AE1200 Cisco/Linksys Wireless-N USB adapter having stopped working after I ran the update manager in Ubuntu 12.04

  Here is the problem, I use a Cisco/Linksys AE1200 wireless network adapter to connect my desktop to a public wifi internet connection. I use ndiswrapper to use the windows driver and it had been working fine for me untill I ran the update manager overnight a few days ago. • MS Bing web crawler out of control causing our site to go down

  Here is a weird one that I am not sure what to do. Today our companies e-commerce site went down. I tailed the production log and saw that we were receiving a ton of request from this range of IP's 157.55.98.0/157.55.100.0. I googled around and come to find out that it is a MSN Web Crawler. So essentially MS web crawler overloaded our site causing it not to respond. Even though in our robots.txt file we have the following; Crawl-delay: 10 So what I did was just banned the IP range in iptables. But what I am not sure to do from here is how to follow up. I can't find anywhere to contact Bing about this issue, I don't want to keep those IPs blocked because I am sure eventually we will get de-indexed from Bing. And it doesn't really seem like this has happened to anyone else before. Any Suggestions? Update, My Server / Web Stats Our web server is using Nginx, Rails 3, and 5 Unicorn workers. We have 4gb of memory and 2 virtual cores. We have been running this setup for over 9 months now and never had an issue, 95% of the time our system is under very little load. On average we receive 800,000 page views a month and this never comes close to bringing / slowing down our web server. Taking a look at the logs we were receiving anywhere from 5 up to 40 request / second from this IP range. In all my years of web development I have never seen a crawler hit a website so many times. Is this new with Bing?
