• Converting Generic Type into reference type after checking its type using GetType(). How ?

    - by Shantanu Gupta
    i am trying to call a function that is defined in a class RFIDeas_Wrapper(dll being used). But when i checked for type of reader and after that i used it to call function it shows me error Cannot convert type T to RFIDeas_Wrapper. EDIT private List<string> GetTagCollection<T>(T Reader) { TagCollection = new List<string>(); if (Reader.GetType() == typeof(RFIDeas_Wrapper)) { ((RFIDeas_Wrapper)Reader).OpenDevice(); // here Reader is of type RFIDeas_Wrapper //, but i m not able to convert Reader into its datatype. string Tag_Id = ((RFIDeas_Wrapper)Reader).TagID(); //Adds Valid Tag Ids into the collection if(Tag_Id!="0") TagCollection.Add(Tag_Id); } else if (Reader.GetType() == typeof(AlienReader)) TagCollection = ((AlienReader)Reader).TagCollection; return TagCollection; } ((RFIDeas_Wrapper)Reader).OpenDevice(); , ((AlienReader)Reader).TagCollection; I want this line to be executed without any issue. As Reader will always be of the type i m specifying. How to make compiler understand the same thing.

  • Double pointer const-correctness warnings in C

    - by Michael Koval
    You can obviously cast a pointer to non-const data to a a pointer of the same type to const data: int *x = NULL; int const *y = x; Adding additional const qualifiers to match the additional indirection should logically work the same way: int * *x = NULL; int *const *y = x; /* okay */ int const *const *z = y; /* warning */ Compiling this with GCC or Clang with the -Wall flag, however, results in the following warning: test.c:4:23: warning: initializing 'int const *const *' with an expression of type 'int *const *' discards qualifiers in nested pointer types int const *const *z = y; /* warning */ ^ ~ Why does adding an additional const qualifier "discard qualifiers in nested pointer types"?

  • Choosing a type for search results in C#

    - by Chris M
    I have a result set that will never exceed 500; the results that come back from the web-service are assigned to a search results object. The data from the webservice is about 2mb; the bit I want to use is about a third of each record, so this allows me to cache and quickly manipulate it. I want to be able to sort and filter the results with the least amount of overhead and as fast as possible so I used the VCSKICKS timing class to measure their performance Average Total (10,000) Type Create Sort Create Sort HashSet 0.1579 0.0003 1579 3 IList 0.0633 0.0002 633 2 IQueryable 0.0072 0.0432 72 432 Measured in Seconds using http://www.vcskicks.com/algorithm-performance.php I created the hashset through a for loop over the web-service response (adding to the hashset). The List & IQueryable were created using LINQ. Question I can understand why HashSet takes longer to create (the foreach loop vs linq); but why would IQueryable take longer to sort than the other two; and finally is there a better way to assign the HashSet. Thanks Actual Program public class Program { private static AuthenticationHeader _authHeader; private static OPSoapClient _opSession; private static AccommodationSearchResponse _searchResults; private static HashSet<SearchResults> _myHash; private static IList<SearchResults> _myList; private static IQueryable<SearchResults> _myIQuery; static void Main(string[] args) { #region Setup WebService _authHeader = new AuthenticationHeader { UserName = "xx", Password = "xx" }; _opSession = new OPSoapClient(); #region Setup Search Results _searchResults = _opgSession.SearchCR(_authHeader, "ENG", "GBP", "GBR"); #endregion Setup Search Results #endregion Setup WebService // HASHSET SpeedTester hashTest = new SpeedTester(TestHashSet); hashTest.RunTest(); Console.WriteLine("- Hash Test
Average Running Time: {0}; Total Time: {1}", hashTest.AverageRunningTime, hashTest.TotalRunningTime); SpeedTester hashSortTest = new SpeedTester(TestSortingHashSet); hashSortTest.RunTest(); Console.WriteLine("- Hash Sort Test
Average Running Time: {0}; Total Time: {1}", hashSortTest.AverageRunningTime, hashSortTest.TotalRunningTime); // ILIST SpeedTester listTest = new SpeedTester(TestList); listTest.RunTest(); Console.WriteLine("- List Test
Average Running Time: {0}; Total Time: {1}", listTest.AverageRunningTime, listTest.TotalRunningTime); SpeedTester listSortTest = new SpeedTester(TestSortingList); listSortTest.RunTest(); Console.WriteLine("- List Sort Test
Average Running Time: {0}; Total Time: {1}", listSortTest.AverageRunningTime, listSortTest.TotalRunningTime); // IQUERIABLE SpeedTester iqueryTest = new SpeedTester(TestIQueriable); iqueryTest.RunTest(); Console.WriteLine("- iquery Test
Average Running Time: {0}; Total Time: {1}", iqueryTest.AverageRunningTime, iqueryTest.TotalRunningTime); SpeedTester iquerySortTest = new SpeedTester(TestSortableIQueriable); iquerySortTest.RunTest(); Console.WriteLine("- iquery Sort Test
Average Running Time: {0}; Total Time: {1}", iquerySortTest.AverageRunningTime, iquerySortTest.TotalRunningTime); } static void TestHashSet() { var test = _searchResults.Items; _myHash = new HashSet<SearchResults>(); foreach(var x in test) { _myHash.Add(new SearchResults { Ref = x.Ref, Price = x.StandardPrice }); } } static void TestSortingHashSet() { var sorted = _myHash.OrderBy(s => s.Price); } static void TestList() { var test = _searchResults.Items; _myList = (from x in test select new SearchResults { Ref = x.Ref, Price = x.StandardPrice }).ToList(); } static void TestSortingList() { var sorted = _myList.OrderBy(s => s.Price); } static void TestIQueriable() { var test = _searchResults.Items; _myIQuery = (from x in test select new SearchResults { Ref = x.Ref, Price = x.StandardPrice }).AsQueryable(); } static void TestSortableIQueriable() { var sorted = _myIQuery.OrderBy(s => s.Price); } }

  • Struts2 converting empty string parameter to an "int"

    How does one convert an empty string to an int using Struts2. When the application encounters this parameter with no value, like from an empty text field, it throws the following exception. java.lang.NoSuchMethodException: com.XXXXXXXXXXXX.setID([Ljava.lang.String;) Where ID is an integer, and the URL is: Something.action?ID=&other=rawr Is there a way to do this without using an Integer (class)? Do I have to write a type converter?

  • converting a timestring to a duration

    - by radman
    Hi, At the moment I am trying to read in a timestring formatted and create a duration from that. I am currently trying to use the boost date_time time_duration class to read and store the value. boost date_time provides a method time_duration duration_from_string(std::string) that allows a time_duration to be created from a time string and it accepts strings formatted appropriately ("[-]h[h][:mm][:ss][.fff]".). Now this method works fine if you use a correctly formatted time string. However if you submit something invalid like "ham_sandwich" or "100" then you will still be returned a time_duration that is not valid. Specifically if you try to pass it to a standard output stream then an assertion will occur. My question is: Does anyone know how to test the validity of the boost time_duration? and failing that can you suggest another method of reading a timestring and getting a duration from it? Note: I have tried the obvious testing methods that time_duration provides; is_not_a_date_time(), is_special() etc and they don't pick up that there is an issue. Using boost 1.38.0

  • Should you correct compiler warnings about type conversions using explicit typecasts?

    - by BastiBechtold
    In my current project, the compiler shows hundreds of warnings about type conversions. There is a lot of code like this iVar = fVar1*fVar2/fVar3; // or even iVar = fVar1*fVar2/fVar3+.5f; which intentionally assign float values to int. Of course, I could fix these warnings using iVar = int(...); but that looks kind of ugly. Would you rather live with the ugliness or live with the warnings? Or is there even a clean solution?

  • How do I convert a windows forms app from C# to VB ?

    - by SLC
    I've been converting all kinds of other things, classes, interfaces, ASP.NET MVC apps, and WPF applications, but I am stumped as to how to convert a windows forms application, as the whole structure seems to be different. Does anyone have any advice on how to tackle this problem? I see essentially that you have two files, Form1.cs and Form1.Designer.cs. Literally translating them from C# to VB doesn't work because of some intricacies or other of how Visual Basic works. I think you /might/ be able to convert Form1.cs in this way, as it's just a constructor plus event handlers, but the designer contains the references to the controls etc. and I am not sure how to go about doing that. I am using Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2.

  • How to retrieve a bigint from a database and place it into an Int64 in SSIS

    - by b0fh
    I ran into this problem a couple years back and am hoping there has been a fix and I just don't know about it. I am using an 'Execute SQL Task' in the Control Flow of an SSIS package to retrieve a 'bigint' ID value. The task is supposed to place this in an Int64 SSIS variable but I getting the error: "The type of the value being assigned to variable "User::AuditID" differs from the current variable type. Variables may not change type during execution. Variable types are strict, except for variables of type Object." When I brought this to MS' attention a couple years back they stated that I had to 'work around' this by placing the bigint into an SSIS object variable and then converting the value to Int64 as needed. Does anyone know if this has been fixed or do I still have to 'work around' this mess? edit: Server Stats Product: Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Edition Operating System: Microsoft Windows NT 5.2 (3790) Platform: NT INTEL X86 Version: 9.00.1399.06

  • Quick question regarding this issue, Why doesnt it print out the second value(converted second value

    - by sil3nt
    Quick question, What have I done wrong here. The purpose of this code is to get the input into a string, the input being "12 34", with a space in between the "12" and "32" and to convert and print the two separate numbers from an integer variable known as number. Why doesn't the second call to the function copyTemp, not produce the value 34?. I have an index_counter variable which keeps track of the string index and its meant to skip the 'space' character?? what have i done wrong? thanks. #include <stdio.h> #include <string.h> int index_counter = 0; int number; void copyTemp(char *expr,char *temp); int main(){ char exprstn[80]; //as global? char tempstr[80]; gets(exprstn); copyTemp(exprstn,tempstr); printf("Expression: %s
",exprstn); printf("Temporary: %s
",tempstr); printf("number is: %d
",number); copyTemp(exprstn,tempstr); //second call produces same output shouldnt it now produce 34 in the variable number? printf("Expression: %s
",exprstn); printf("Temporary: %s
",tempstr); printf("number is: %d
",number); return 0; } void copyTemp(char *expr,char *temp){ int i; for(i = index_counter; expr[i] != '\0'; i++){ if (expr[i] == '0'){ temp[i] = expr[i]; } if (expr[i] == '1'){ temp[i] = expr[i]; } if (expr[i] == '2'){ temp[i] = expr[i]; } if (expr[i] == '3'){ temp[i] = expr[i]; } if (expr[i] == '4'){ temp[i] = expr[i]; } if (expr[i] == '5'){ temp[i] = expr[i]; } if (expr[i] == '6'){ temp[i] = expr[i]; } if (expr[i] == '7'){ temp[i] = expr[i]; } if (expr[i] == '8'){ temp[i] = expr[i]; } if (expr[i] == '9'){ temp[i] = expr[i]; } if (expr[i] == ' '){ temp[i] = '\0'; sscanf(temp,"%d",&number); index_counter = i+1; //skips? } } // is this included here? temp[i] = '\0'; }

  • Convert byte array to understandable String

    - by Ender
    I have a program that handles byte arrays in Java, and now I would like to write this into a XML file. However, I am unsure as to how I can convert the following byte array into a sensible String to write to a file. Assuming that it was Unicode characters I attempted the following code: String temp = new String(encodedBytes, "UTF-8"); Only to have the debugger show that the encodedBytes contain " ^-m/ufffd IA". The String should contain a hash in alphanumerical format. How would I turn the above String into a sensible String for output?

  • __toString magic and type coercion

    - by TomcatExodus
    I've created a Template class for managing views and their associated data. It implements Iterator and ArrayAccess, and permits "sub-templates" for easy usage like so:
<?php echo $template['foo']; ?>
<?php foreach($template->post as $post): ?>
<?php echo $post['bar']; ?>
<?php endforeach; ?> Anyways, rather than using inline core functions, such as hash() or date(), I figured it would be useful to create a class called TemplateData, which would act as a wrapper for any data stored in the templates. This way, I can add a list of common methods for formatting, for example: echo $template['foo']->asCase('upper'); echo $template['bar']->asDate('H:i:s'); //etc.. When a value is set via $template['foo'] = 'bar'; in the controllers, the value of 'bar' is stored in it's own TemplateData object. I've used the magic __toString() so when you echo a TemplateData object, it casts to (string) and dumps it's value. However, despite the mantra controllers and views should not modify data, whenever I do something like this: $template['foo'] = 1; echo $template['foo'] + 1; //exception It dies on a Object of class TemplateData could not be converted to int; Unless I recast $template['foo'] to a string: echo ((string) $template['foo']) + 1; //outputs 2 Sort of defeats the purpose having to jump through that hoop. Are there any workarounds for this sort of behavior that exist, or should I just take this as it is, an incidental prevention of data modification in views?

  • Convert html/css print media display to .doc with appropriate page breaks?

    - by DevelopingChris
    I'm looking to export a page that looks good in print media, to word. Can this be done automatically, or mostly automatically with office apis? The alternative is to create a program that reads all our style meta data and font meta data and convert to word and force a download. The issue is our style metadata is already built for css, its a web app after all. And writing my own css parser, doesn't sound like a good use of time.

  • How to convert many thousands of lines of VBScript to C#?

    - by Ross Patterson
    I have a collection of about 10,000 small VBScript programs (50-100 lines each) and a small collection of larger ones, and I'm looking for a way to convert them to C# without resorting to by-hand transliteration. The programs are automated test cases for a web application, written for HP/Mercury's QuickTest Pro, and I'm trying to turn them into test cases for Selenium. Luckily, the tests appear to be well-written, using a library of building blocks and idioms (the larger programs), so the test cases actually resemble a domain-specific language more than they do VBScript, and the QTP-ness is well-buried inside the libraries. Ideally, what I'm searching for is a tool that can do the syntactic transformation from VBScript to C# for both the dsl-ish test cases and also the more complicated building-block libraries. That would leave me with a manual cleanup of the libraries, and probably very little work on the test cases. If I could find a VBScript-to-VB.NET translator, I'd take that also, as I suspect I could compile the VB.NET and then de-compile to C# using .NET Relector or something similar. Plan B is to write a translator of my own for the test cases, since they're in a very straight-line style, but it wouldn't help with the libraries. Any suyggestions? I haven't written a compiler in at least 15 years, and while I haven't forgotten how, I'm not looking forward to it - least of all for VBScript!

  • Is automated source translation seen as beneficial and/or necessary?

    - by busybutwantmore
    I have recently spent several years translating legacy FORTRAN into Java. Prior to that, I found myself translating FORTRAN into C (for which I wrote a simple translation tool). After all this work, I find myself wondering how many others are doing similar language-to-language translations and whether an automated way of doing so would be beneficial. I know about F2C, For_C, F2J and others, as well as some of the translation sites, but none seem to be all that successful. Having seen output from For_C, I can see why it just hasn't taken off. While it is technically correct, it is very difficult to maintain. So, I guess what I am wondering is if there were are tool that produced more maintainable, more grok-able code than the code I have seen, would developers use it? Or are developers as jaded as many posts seem to indicate and unwilling to use generated code as it could never be as good as their manually translated code?
