Converting Source ASCII Files to JPEGs

I publish technical books, in print, PDF, and Kindle/MOBI, with EPUB on the way. The Kindle does not support monospace fonts, which are kinda useful for source code listings. The only way to do monospace fonts is to convert the text (Java source, HTML, XML, etc.) into JPEG images. More specifically, due to pagination issues, a given input ASCII file needs to be split into slices of ~6 lines each, with each slice turned into a JPEG, so listings can span a screen. This is a royal pain. My current mechanism to do that involves: Running expand to set a consistent 2-space tab size, which pipes to... a2ps, which pipes to... A small Perl snippet to add a "%%LanguageLevel: 3\n" line, which pipes to... ImageMagick's convert, to take the (E)PS and make a JPEG out it, with an appropriate background, cropped to 575x148+5+28, etc. That used to work 100% of the time. It now works 95% of the time. The rest of the time, I get convert: geometry does not contain image errors, which I cannot seem to get rid of, in part because I don't understand what the problem is. Before this process, I used to use a pretty-print engine (source-highlight) to get HTML out of the source code...but then the only thing I could find to convert the HTML into JPEGs was to automate screen-grabs from an embedded Gecko engine. Reliability stank, which is why I switched to my current mechanism. So, if you were you, and you needed to turn source listings into JPEG images, in an automated fashion, how would you do it? Bonus points if it offers some sort of pretty-print process (e.g., bolded keywords)! Or, if you know what typically causes convert: geometry does not contain image, that might help. My current process is ugly, but if I could get it back to 100% reliability, that'd be just fine for now. Thanks in advance!

JQuery: Current, Well-Formatted, Printable Documentation?

Hi All, I'm looking for a current (1.2), well-formatted, printable version of the jQuery documentation. I've checked the alternative resources page and see the PDF versions from CF and Java, but both are out of date. The jQuery site has the API browser with "Printable Version" in the toolbox, but it prints terribly, and I don't really want to print one page or tab at a time. I have a hard time believing that there is no print doc for a tool this popular - all I want is a simple listing with descriptions and examples ON PAPER. Am I missing something? I can buy one of the books if I need to, but not sure which is for the current version. Thanks! Update: I can see that somebody voted this down. I know it's a pretty basic question, but it is not asked lightly or frivolously. I have made a pretty solid effort to find this on my own, and am pretty good at finding information when I need it. Perhaps the person who thought the question not worth asking knows where to find the print doc?

Using Visual Studio 2008 to Assemble, Link, Debug, and Execute MASM 6.11 Assembly Code

I would like to use Visual Studio 2008 to the greatest extent possible while effectively compiling/linking/building/etc code as if all these build processes were being done by the tools provided with MASM 6.11. The exact version of MASM does not matter, so long as it's within the 6.x range, as that is what my college is using to teach 16-bit assembly. I have done some research on the subject and have come to the conclusion that there are several options: Reconfigure VS to call the MASM 6.11 executables with the same flags, etc as MASM 6.11 would natively do. Create intermediary batch file(s) to be called by VS to then invoke the proper commands for MASM's linker, etc. Reconfigure VS's built-in build tools/rules (assembler, linker, etc) to provide an environment identical to the one used by MASM 6.11. Option (2) was brought up when I realized that the options available in VS's "External Tools" interface may be insufficient to correctly invoke MASM's build tools, thus a batch file to interpret VS's strict method of passing arguments might be helpful, as a lot of my learning about how to get this working involved my manually calling ML.exe, LINK.exe, etc from the command prompt. Below are several links that may prove useful in answering my question. Please keep in mind that I have read them all and none are the actual solution. I can only hope my specifying MASM 6.11 doesn't prevent anyone from contributing a perhaps more generalized answer. How To debug Android app on Emulator using NetBeans IDE

I recently downloaded the latest NetBeans IDE (for MACOSX) and imported/migrated a project over from the ECLIPSE environment. Everything looks, and works well... except that EMULATOR gets stuck "waiting for the debugger to attach." I tried "Attaching Debugger..." and set the PORT value to every case I've ever read about (8200, 8700, 5555, etc.) but the connection is refused. I am of the opinion that this is not the preferred way to start a debugging session in NetBeans for Android. What am I missing?

How to debug nondeterministic access violation crash?

Our C#/COM/C++ application is crashing and I need help debugging it. Running with gflags enabled and WinDbg attached, we determined the crashes are caused by an access violation, but we haven't been able to narrow it down any more than that. We are not seeing the issue on all machines; there are a couple of machines that seem to reproduce the issue frequently but not deterministically. We have observed the application crash from simply switching away from the application (say, Alt-Tab) and then back. Output from WinDbg is below. We have been trying to systematically comment out areas of code that could be causing the problem, but we haven't had much success yet. Debug message "Resource interpreted as other but transferred with MIME type application/javascript"

OK, I understand what the messages means, but I'm really not sure what's causing it. I'm using Safari and the Web Inspector on Mac OS X, by the way. I've got the following in my document head: <script src="http://local.url/a/js/jquery.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="http://local.url/a/js/jquery.inplace.js" type="text/javascript"></script> jquery.js is handled fine, but the other file causes the warning. It also seems that the javascript in this file never gets executed. The file is being served via mod_deflate, so it is gzip encoded, but so is the other file. Has anybody got any ideas what's causing this, or how to resolve it? Cheers all, Gaz.

Using the IE8 'Developer Tools' to debug earlier IE versions

Hi guys and gals I am less than satisfied in my HTML/CSS/JS debugging of pages with IE6 and 7 specific bugs. I am aware that IE8 has a Firebug clone, called 'Developer Tools' installed. Is it possible to have IE8 installed (maybe on a VM, i don't mind), set it to compatibility mode (is there one for IE6?), then perform JS debugging and live HTML changes, using the IE8 Developer Tools, just like we can in Firebug? many many thanks mieze

I have an InstallShield MSI project. When I pass an MSIHANDLE from an InstallScript custom action to a managed assembly initialized via DotNetCoCreateObject(), the value received within my managed code is -2. Does anyone know if it is possible to access an MSIHANDLE from an InstallScript custom action that calls into managed code via DotNetCoCreateObject()? I'd like to log my custom action results to the same log file as the rest of the installation. I am using InstallShield 2010, Windows Install 4.5 and .Net 3.5.

Why does ruby-debug say 'Saved frames may be incomplete'

Print Preview Control used in a custom Print Preview Dialog.

I have successfully implemented printing and print preview for my app using the PrintDocument, PrintDialog and PrintPreviewDialog classes of .NET. However my app uses a toolkit to improve the appearance of the standard .NET controls. There are versions of most .NET controls in the toolkit, but none for the Print controls. Therefore to ensure that the appearance of these controls matches the rest of the app I am creating a custom PrintPreviewDialog based on a toolkit form and embedding a .NET PrintPrewviewControl in it. My problem is that the PrintPreviewControl always shows "No pages to display". I had no trouble getting this to work using the .NET PrintPreviewDialog and cannot see what I am doing wrong. This is a .NET 2.0 PrintPreviewControl and so I know that I need to call InvalidatePreview() after assigning the PrintDocument. However it does not seem to matter where i place it, the PrintPage event handler never gets called... EDIT: I've just noticed that while the original PrintDocument m_printDocument shows a PrintPageHandler in its properties, the m_printPreviewControl.Document does not. Get more debug info from AxHost?

Hello I'm trying to deploy an application which uses an library that embeds an ActiveX control with AxHost in C#. When I run the installed app on our test rig I catch and present the following exception: Unexpected exception. This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. Monitoring used connections on mysql to debug 'too many connections'

On LAMP production server I get the 'too many connections' error from MYSQL occasionally, I want to add monitoring to find if the reason is that I exceed the max-connections limit. My question: How can I query from mysql or from mysqladmin the current number of used connections? (I noticed that show status gives total connections and not the currently used ones.)

Visual Studio ignore try catch - debug only

I think error handling is a good idea. :) When debugging it can get in the way - especially with nice user friendly messages. In VB6 I could just check a box for the compiler to ignore my error handling. I found the dialog that allows me to do something similar in VS, but it's about 10,000 check boxes instead of one - which is too many to change every time I want a production compilation. Is there a way to set VS up so when I am in debugging mode I get one set of conditions and when I am in production I get another? ...or is there just another method to handling errors and debugging more efficiently? Universal iPhone/iPad application debug compilation error for iPhone testing

I have written an iPhone and iPad universal app which runs fine in the iPad simulator on Xcode, but I would now like to test the iPhone functionality. I seem unable to run the iPhone simulator with this code as it always defaults to the iPad? How do I avoid this error and is there a better way to split the universal logic paths in this programmatically-created app?

Why does the PRINT statement in T-SQL seem to only sometimes work? What are the constraints on using it? It seems sometimes if a result set is generated, it becomes a null function, I assumed to prevent corrupting the resultset, but could it's output not go out in another result set, such as the row count?

how to visualise/debug an imagemap?

I'm dynamically generating an imagemap for a chart tool I have. I was hoping to be able to set a border or color on the area tags so I could check everything was being generated with the right coords, but a little research shows this is not possible. How to debug MySQL/Doctrine2 Queries?

I am using MySQL with Zend Framework & Doctrine 2. I think even if you don't use Doctrine 2, you will be familiar with errors like SQLSTATE[42000]: Syntax error or access violation: 1064 You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'ASC' at line 1 The problem is that I don't see the full query. Without an ORM framework, I could probably echo the sql easily, but with a framework, how can I find out what SQL its trying to execute? I have STAThread process which when called from my process simply bombs with no exceptions and almost nothing in the call stack. If I click Cntrl+Alt+E, I get an exceptions window, how can I use it in this situation, seems like some exception is not being caught here. Also what other debugging aids can I use here in Visual Studio 2010?

How to debug browser crash when running Silverlight app

I am on a team of three people who are developing a Silverlight application. On two of our developers' machines the app seems to randomly crash. It never crashes on the third developer's machine. The nature of the crash is that internet explorer just dies with an "Internet Explorer has stopped working" message. The problem details look like this: Problem Event Name: BEX Application Name: IEXPLORE.EXE Application Version: 8.0.6001.18882 Application Timestamp: 4b3ed243 Fault Module Name: StackHash_2cd8 Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0 Fault Module Timestamp: 00000000 Exception Offset: 0024df00 Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Data: 00000008 OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.256.6 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: 2cd8 Additional Information 2: 0c337fa6c2057a9dbce1860c5e2d8315 Additional Information 3: e13b Additional Information 4: 5da012709e52526a1af19795dc4a33fd Then windows displays this message: "To help protect your computer, Data Execution Prevention has closed Internet Explorer." If I am attached to the app with the Visual Studio debugger the only information I get is this line in the output window: "The program '[2140] iexplore.exe: Silverlight' has exited with code -1073741819 (0xc0000005)." How should I go about debugging this problem? I'm not really sure where to start.
