  A quick Google search for solutions to Focus Stealing in Windows reveals two main result categories: People suggesting incomplete solutions involving the ForegroundLockTimeout registry entry (or TweakUI, which I believe simply changes the aforementioned registry entry), which isn't very effective. Incessant hordes of Windows users complaining about it. It's particularly annoying in two common scenarios: Something triggers a program to popup a dialog window in the background while a fullscreen app is focused, causing the fullscreen app to minimize. A window steals focus while you are typing, stealing all of your keystrokes. If you happen to press Space, Enter, or trigger a keyboard shortcut (like Y for Yes), it can cause completely undesirable outcomes. What creative solutions can be applied to fix this problem for either or both of these scenarios?

• Where to include business logic in a domain driven architecture

  I'm trying to learn effective DDD practices as I go, but had a fundamental question I wanted to get some clarity on. I am using ASP.NET WebForms and I am creating a situation where a user places an order. Upon order submission, the code-behind retrieves the user, builds the order from the inputs on the form, calls the User.PlaceOrder() method to perform add the order object to the user's order collection, and calls the repository to save the record to the database. That is fairly simply and straightforward. Now I need to add logic to send an order confirmation email, and I'm not really sure the proper place to put this code or where to call it. In the olden days I would simply put that code in the code-behind and call it at the same time I was building the order, but I want to get a step closer to solid proper architecture so I wanted to get some information. I´ve looked and some used to mysql_query to do this (I´ve tested it and it works), but can I trust this to be effective and error free? Does it work like in MySQL transactions or setting the @rank in a seperated query may cause unexpected results?

• Crowdsourcing translation for mobile developers?

  I am developing applications for mobile phones with different operating systems (Android, Symbian, iPhone). Applications are sold internationally so they need to be translated to different languages in addition to english version. I assume most mobile developers do the translations using some paid external service each time. This approach does not look very cost-effective to me. Would it make sense to have a website where simple translations would be done using crowdsourcing (other developers)? Most strings in mobile applications are very simple and short, for example "OK, "Cancel", "Are you sure?", "Please enter your password". Also the same strings are used in hundreds of applications. Instead of paying for translating all strings, developers could save money by only buying their difficult application specific translations. Does anyone agree with this idea? I have seen many opensource projects doing the translations succesfully using volunteers.

There is mutual agreement between the developers and Product Managers that there should be a business case behind every feature the development team builds. My question is, what is an effective way to make a business case for platform-level features that have higher up front cost but will provide long term benefits? For example, the development team would like to implement a plug-in framework. There is the higher up-front cost to implement a plug-in framework but delivering the subsequent features as plug-ins will be cheaper in the long run. This is obvious to everyone including the Product Managers. Is there a standard/simple way to express the cost-benefits? Is there a simple way to visualize it with a graph?

• Some stupid warnings

  I have a number of C source files(both .c and .h files). header files contains a number of functions. Out of those functions, only partially are used in a source .C file.Suppose a.h,b.h are header files and a.c and b.c are .c files. a.h is included in a.c. But only a number of functions those are in a. h are used and rest are not used. After compilation I find following warnings: function XXXX defined but not used. But those XXXX functions which are not used in a.c are used in b.c. So, i can't completely remove those functions too. So , i decided to make a separate file containing only those XXXX functions and included it wherever it is used.Doing this is creating multiple number of header files. Can anybody please suggest me to some effective way to solve this problem.

  I struggle with finding a good medium on communication. In our jobs, it seems like it's very easy to get lost in code and lose track of time. It also seems kind of ridiculous to send out updates for every tiny task. Even though I am working very hard on getting things done, in a company that has very active communication between other branches, it tends to look bad for me when I'm not constantly updating my status. However, if I'm working on a 3-4 hour project, I'm not going to update management for every single line of code that I output. Broad I know, depends on the people, company, etc, but what would be a good general rule of thumb for effective communication?

• PHP - Using strcpsn() to protect against SQL injection?

  I am making a sort of form validation system and I need to check the SQL database to see if the username is already there. So, my question, is it effective to use a little if statement like this to protect against an attack? if (strcspn($string, "/\?!@#$%^&*()[]{}|:;<>,.\"\'-+=" == strlen($string)){ return true; } So essentially, if the string contains any of these characters, "/\?!@#$%^&*()[]{}|:;<>,.\"\'-+=", then the length will not equal that of the original $string. I am just wondering if this is sufficient to protect, or if there is more that I must do. Thanks.

• How to efficiently deal with a large amount of HTML5 canvas pixel data over websockets

  Using imageData = context.getImageData(0, 0, width, height); JSON.stringify(imageData.data); I grab the pixel data, convert it to a string, and then send it over the wire via websockets. However, this string can be pretty large, depending on the size of the canvas object. I tried using the compression technique found here: JavaScript implementation of Gzip but socket.io throws the error Websocket message contains invalid character(s). Is there an effective way to compress this data so that it can be sent over websockets?

• What's the best way to replace the first letter of a string in Java?

  I'm trying to convert the first letter of a string to lowercase. I know there's a capitalize method, but I want to accomplish the opposite. This is the code I used: value.substring(0,1).toLowerCase() + value.substring(1) Effective, but feels a bit manual. Are there any other ways to do it? Any better ways? Any Java string functions that do it for you? I was thinking of using something like a replace function, but Java's replace doesn't accept an index as a parameter. You have to pass the actual character/substring. Another way I can think of doing it is something like: value.replaceFirst(value.charAt(0), value.charAt(0).toLowerCase()) Except that replaceFirst expects 2 strings, so the value.charAt(0)s would probably need to be replaced with value.substring(0,1)s. Is this any better? Does it matter? Is there any standard way to do this?

It's great, but it will only be effective if developers look at it once in a while and I'm trying to figure out how to instill that habit in them. I've contemplated several solutions, such as: forcing them to use Trac as their homepage (too draconian) handing out bookmarks to the RSS feeds (same problem--no one will look at them) automatic email notifications (won't drive them to the site and might just annoy them more than anything else) What are some other solutions? What have you tried that worked?

• How to prevent application thievery?

  Hey, I was wondering what the most effective way of preventing people from stealing my application (downloading a copy of the .apk online rather than buying it). I've spent a lot of time on one in particular (Droidbox) and won't be releasing Sync until I can guarantee that the people who are providing illegal copies of the pro version aren't able to. Anyone implemented this? I've tried checking my package signature verses an the signature of an unsigned copy but it appears to be the same - perhaps I'm doing something incorrectly here. I'm unsure whether people actually distribute the signed .apk in which case I don't think signature validation would work to begin with...

My challenge is to avoid that the robot gets trapped in "local minimum" when using the "potential field" method. Instead of using a "random walk" approach to avoid that the robot gets trapped I have thought about whether it is possible to implement a variation of A* which could act as a sort of guide for precisely to avoid that the robot gets trapped in "local minimum". Is there some of the experiences of this kind, or can refer to literature, which avoids local minimum in a more effective way than the one used in the "random walk" approach.

  Hello all, I would like to set an attribute for a div. I have done this: $('#row-img_1').onmouseover = function (){ alert('foo'); }; $('#row-img_2').onmouseout = function (){ alert('foo2'); }; However, the above has not worked, it does not alert when mouse is over or when it moves out. I have also tried the $('#row-img_1').attr(); and I could not get this to work either. I am aware that I should be using a more effective event handling system but my divs are dynamically generated. But I realized that most of employers prefer not candidates who is able to deliver good software but those who is trained to answer questions like "what are ten differences between pointers and references in C++" or "what this messy code fragment will print". Last time I have read a book on C++ 15 years ago in secondary school and yes, that was Bjarne Stroustrup. But today I need something quick, without long philosophical explanations about polymorphism etc but with focus to silly interview tests. • Image visualization with canvas. How to resize them?

  I'm building a website photo gallery for a friend. Images are loaded as simple DOM image objects (<img src="" />), and the size of these images is based on the browser size. So I resize them with CSS. This isn't an optimal solution since CSS resizing seems to change the quality of the image and pixelate it quite a bit. I was thinking of rendering the image with canvas and then resize it with that so that the quality remains effective, but I can't find any info about this online. Any ideas?

• Do validations still fire in ASP.NET even if the controls are hidden?

  I have a form that uses ASP.NET validations. I am using some inline C# in the aspx to show/hide certain controls depending on a user's role. I would use the Visible property, but there are so many of them, I just decided to do inline C# to show and hide (I know, not best practice, but bear with me for a second). I am having an issue where Page.IsValid is always set to False when I submit my form (when certain fields are being hidden). Will the validations still fire off even if the controls are not even rendered on the pag? Also, if this is not the case, is there an effective way of breaking down Page.IsValid to find out what is setting it to False? Thanks.

  Say I have a set myset of custom objects that may be equal although their references are different (a == b and a is not b). Now if I add(a) to the set, Python correctly assumes that a in myset and b in myset even though there is only len(myset) == 1 object in the set. That is clear. But is it now possible to extract the value of a somehow out from the set, using b only? Suppose that the objects are mutable and I want to change them both, having forgotten the direct reference to a. Put differently, I am looking for the myset[b] operation, which would return exactly the member a of the set. It seems to me that the type set cannot do this (faster than iterating through all its members). If so, is there at least an effective work-around?

  My question is similar to this combinations question but in my case I have N (N 4) small sets (1-2 items per set for now might go to 3 maybe 4) and want to generate each combination of one item from each set. The current solution looks somethinging along the lines of this for(T:: iterator a = setA.begin(); a != setA.end(); ++a) for(T:: iterator b = setB.begin(); b != setB.end(); ++b) for(T:: iterator c = setC.begin(); c != setC.end(); ++c) for(T:: iterator d = setD.begin(); d != setD.end(); ++d) for(T:: iterator e = setE.begin(); e != setE.end(); ++e) something(*a,*b,*c,*d,*e); Simple, effective, probably reasonably efficient, but ugly and not very extensible. Does anyone know of a better/cleaner way to do this?
