  • Method for SharePoint list/item locking across processes/machines?

    In general, is there a decent way in SharePoint to control race conditions due to two processes or even two machines in the farm operating on the same list or list item at the same time? That is, is there any mechanism either built in or that can be fabricated via the Object Model for doing cross-process or cross-machine locking of individual list items? I want to write a timer job that performs a bunch of manipulations on a list. This list is written to by the SharePoint UI and then read by the UI. I want to be able to make sure that the UI doesn't either write to or read from the list when it is in an inconsistent state due to the timer job being in the middle of a manipulation. Is there any way to do this? Also, I want to allow for multiple instances of the timer job to run simultaneously. This, again, will require a lock to be sure that the two jobs don't attempt to operate on the same list/item at the same time. TIA for any help!

    Let's say I have the following classes. public class Parent { public string name; IList<Children> children; } public class Child { public string parentName; public int age; } As it is understandable, each parent can have multiple children, and we can have multiple parents. What is the best way to initialize these classes? Is it better to get all of the parents, and all of the children from database then use LINQ? IList<Parent> parents = GetParents()//assume this gets parents from db IList<Child> children = GetChildren() //assume this gets children from db foreach(Parent parent in parents) { parent.children = children.Where(x=>x.parentName==parent.name).ToList(); } or get all of the parents and iterate through each parent to query database by parentName to get children information?   • Create a Search Filter List in Google Chrome

    Are you tired of unwanted and/or non-relevant results cluttering up the search results at Bing, Yahoo, and Google? With the Search Filter extension for Chrome you can easily remove the unwanted “chaff” from your search results. Note: The extension only works on Bing, Yahoo, and Google at this time. Before For our example we conducted a search for “anime wallpapers” at Yahoo Singapore, Bing Singapore, and Google. In each set of results we decided to focus on results that would display either a yellow or red warning color from WOT. You can see our targeted result for Yahoo Singapore… The one for Bing Singapore… And the targeted result from Google. Search Filter in Action As soon as you install the extension you should take a quick look at the “Options”. At first the “Filters List Area” will be empty but will not remain so for long as you create your own filter list. The second part may or may not be of interest to you…the ability to opt into the filter service. If you opt in your filter list will be connected to your “Google Account” and will be available on any of your Chrome installs with the extension installed (and set to “Opt In”). Keep in mind that if you choose this option the filter list that you create will be aggregated anonymously and have a GUID number attached to it. After installing the extension we refreshed each of our three search pages…notice the small red circle button beside each search result link. Clicking on the red circle button will cause the entire browser window area to “shade out” temporarily while you decide between adding that website to the filter list or cancelling the action. If you add a website to the filter list that result will immediately disappear from the search results list without refreshing the webpage. Looks like we have another website at the bottom that we could add to the filter list… Click, click, click! After adding one website from each of the three search services you can see that our filter list has gotten off to a nice start. If for some reason you accidentally add a website to the list or change your mind about a website simply click on the red circle button to remove that particular listing. Conclusion If you are looking for an easy way to create a search filter list then this is definitely an extension that is worth taking the time to look at.     I've just purchased a VPS with the hope of transferring multiple shared hosting accounts onto it. The problem is that I've only got 2 IP addresses with my VPS. I can create an account and assign it an IP address, but once I've done this once, I can't do it again. (1 IP address is my main root WHM IP, the other is my new hosting account IP). Can I create multiple hosting accounts and use the same IP? How would I manage multiple hosting accounts in this way? The domain for this hosting account has been purchased by the client, and they hold it (can't transfer for 60 days), so I need to adjust the DNS settings to redirect to my newly created hosting area - how can I do this without a dedicated IP address?

Then compute the len(mylist) to get the count of the items. The challenge is in getting all the elements of v_dims from my text file and putting them in an empty list. I m particularly interested in items in v_dims in my text file. The text file has data in the form of v_dims pattern i showed in my original post. Some data has nested patterns of v_dims. Thanks.   • Windows 7 (64-bit) remove global hotkey created by unknown application

    As the titles says an unknown application that I've installed have registered a global hot-key for Alt+2 , or as this is a Finnish keyboard it's actually Alt Gr+2. As this is also the key combination for writing the @ symbol (I copy/pasted this one) you can imagine how frustrating it is. There doesn't seem to be a way to even list these global hot-keys in windows, let alone change them. Searching the net doesn't help much either, it just gives you a list of windows built-in hot-keys or references to AutoHotKey, which as far as I can tell can't solve this issue. I don't want to script/customize/modify anything, I just want to remove this global hot-key so I can start typing @ again.

    In my application I use some icons. Where should I store the path of the directory containing those icons ? The icons are used in different classes so it doesn't really make sense to store them in one of those classes in particular. I read that global variables are evil, but is it acceptable to use a class (eg Commons) containing only public static final fields to store this king of data ? What solution is used in professional applications ?

  • Windows CE: Changing Static IP Address

    A customer contacted me recently and asked me how to change a static IP address at runtime.  Of course this is not something that I know how to do, but with a little bit of research I figure out how to do it. It turns out that the challenge is to request that the adapter update itself with the new IP Address.  Otherwise, the change in IP address is a matter of changing the address in the registry for the adapter.   The registry entry is something like: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\LAN90001\Parms\TcpIp]    "EnableDHCP"=dword:0    "IpAddress"="192.168.0.100"     "DefaultGateway"="192.168.0.1"    "Subnetmask"="255.255.255.0" Where LAN90001 would be replace with your adapter name.  I have written quite a few articles about how to modify the registry, including a registry editor that you could use.   • Isset and PHP Global Variable

    i have doubt on this particular problem : Global variabe initiation. i got this code and has global variable named conditional_random here : function hello_testing() { global $conditional_random; if (isset($conditional_random)) { echo "foo is inside"; } } As it's name, the global variable (conditional_random) can be or not initiate before the hello_testing function been called. So, what happen to my validation via isset() when $conditional_random is not initiate before the hello_testing function ? will it failed to check or it will always be true cause by the 'global' ?

  • Make Firefox Show Google Results for Default Address Bar Searches

    Have you ever typed something incorrectly into the Firefox address bar, and then had it take you to a page you weren’t expecting? The reason is because Firefox uses Google’s “I’m Feeling Lucky” search, but you can change it. Scratching your head? Let’s take a quick run through what we’re talking about… Normally, if you typed in something like just “howtogeek” in the address bar, and then hit enter… you’ll be taken directly to the How-To Geek site. But how? Very simple! It’s the same place you would have been taken to if you typed “howtogeek” into Google, and then clicked the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button, which takes you to the first result. This is what Firefox does behind the scenes when you put something into the address bar that isn’t a URL. But what if you’d rather head to the search results page instead? Luckily, all you have to do is tweak an about:config parameter in Firefox. Just head into about:config in the address bar, and then filter for keyword.url like so: Double-click on the entry in the list, and then delete the &gfns=1 from the value. That’s the part of the URL that triggers Google to redirect to the first result. And now, the next time you type something into the address bar, either on purpose or because you typo’d it, you’ll be taken to the results page instead: About:Config tweaking is lots of fun.   • Fancy Box to Popup an HTML Page from One List Item in an Unordered List

I'm trying to figure out how to apply Fancy Box so that when someone clicks the Popup HTML link above, a Fancy Box window pops up, according to the script. I've tried variations with placing the id on the li, on the ul and manipulating the script for these selectors to no avail. Any help is appreciated.

  • Generate regular expression to match strings from the list A, but not from list B

    I have two lists of strings ListA and ListB. I need to generate a regular expression that will match all strings in ListA and will not match any string in ListB. The strings could contain any combination of characters, numbers and punctuation. If a string appears on ListA it is guaranteed that it will not be in the ListB. If a string is not in either of these two lists I don't care what the result of the matching should be. The lists typically contain thousands of strings, and strings are fairly similar to each other. I know the trivial answer to this question, which is just generate a regular expression of the form (Str1)|(Str2)|(Str3) where StrN is the string from ListA. But I am looking for a more efficient way to do this. Ideal solution would be some sort of tool that will take two lists and generate a Java regular expression for this. Update 1: By "efficient", I mean to generate expression that is shorter than trivial solution. The ideal algorithm would generate the shorted possible expression. Here are some examples. ListA = { C10 , C15, C195 } ListB = { Bob, Billy } The ideal expression would be /^C1.+$/ Another example, note the third element of ListB ListA = { C10 , C15, C195 } ListB = { Bob, Billy, C25 } The ideal expression is /^C[^2]{1}.+$/ The last example ListA = { A , D ,E , F , H } ListB = { B , C , G , I } The ideal expression is the same as trivial solution which is /^(A|D|E|F|H)$/ Also, I am not looking for the ideal solution, anything better than trivial would help. I was thinking along the lines of generating the list of trivial solutions, and then try to merge the common substrings while watching that we don't wander into ListB territory. *Update 2: I am not particularly worried about the time it takes to generate the RegEx, anything under 10 minutes on the modern machine is acceptable

  • sortable list using jquery ui not passing updated list order

    I am following the sortable lists railscast and got everything working except when I sort, the same (original) order gets passed to the update method each time, so it doesn't update the true order.
