• Computer hanged in the middle of bios flashing process

  I have a laptop: Toshiba Satellite c660-17j, today I decided to update BIOS. I've downloaded bios updater from manufacturer's web site, and in the middle of flashing process computer hanged. I was waiting more than 30 minutes, but nothing was changed on the screen, i've tryed to PRESS MORE BUTTONS, but there were no reactions, so i've turned it off by removing battery (all other methods failed, even pressing power button for ~10 secs). After that computer can't start. I understand, that there's MESS in BIOS chip, and it's possible to re-flash it with hardware programmer, but I don't have it. I remember, that on some PCs (even on my eeepc) there was possibility to re-flash bios by inserting usb flash-disk (with .dat file on it, which contained BIOS), and power on PC, while holding some keys combination, then PC was switching to BIOS programming mode and re-flashed BIOS, after that it was possible to boot up normaly. Is there a way to recover computer without hardware programming BIOS chip? p.s. sorry for my english.

• Exclude a process from being listed in `top`

  Is it possible to exclude some processes from being reported by top? For example, I would like to exclude itself from its listing (ie, I don't want top to show in the process list). I would also like to be able to exclude processes that do not belong to the user running top (except for root). Is this possible? If so, how? If not, is there a similar tool that will do what I want (that does not involve running something like ps frequently).

• Mysql process goes over 100% of CPU usage

  Hello! I'm experiencing some problems with my LAMP server. Recently, everything became very slow, even though visitor count on my websites didn't change to much. When I run top command, it sais that mysql process has taken over 150-200% of CPU. How's that possible, I always thought that 100% is a maximum? • How to run a command in a process that is not a child of the current process?

  I am having a library conflict issue with calling an external program from within a interpreted programming environment (IDL). The issue seems to be that since the program I am calling ends up as a child of IDL, libraries are not being reloaded. From within IDL I can launch sub-processes either directly or using a shell. Is there a good way that I can cause my program to be run without ending up as a child process? The only solution I have found so far is to use ssh localhost my_program. This works perfectly but I would like a more direct solution.

  Ok so i used xp for years before i was able to get my hands on the Windows7 RC which i bought a new HDD for, and then followed the process to dual-boot. About a month ago xp started acting funny and i thought the disk might be dying. So i started using Windows7 all the time. Today i start the computer and it cant find the disk which xp was on anymore. I guess its dead. So i remove the xp HD and my computer cant start...insert bootable disk or something similar So how can i remove the primary(dead) xp disk and boot straight to Windows 7?

• Running JBoss 6 with Runit / daemontools or other process supervision framework

  I'm tying to use runit to daemonize JBoss. I use the /opt/jboss-6.1.0.Final/bin/run.sh script to start the server. When I do so from the comandline, JBoss does not detach (which is what we want), and will also shut down when CTRL+C is pressed. In theory a perfect candidate to use runit on. Everything works fine except when I try to get runit to shut down JBoss. When I issue the command sv stop jboss nothing happens. Runit thinks the process is stopped but jboss continues to run normally. I'm not doing anything special with the run script. This is my runit run script: #!/bin/sh exec 2>&1 exec /opt/jboss-6.1.0.Final/bin/run.sh -c standard -b 0.0.0.0 Looking at the jboss_init_redhat.sh script, the start section does mention ./bin/run.sh but the stop section has the following text: JBOSS_CMD_STOP=${JBOSS_CMD_STOP:-"java -classpath $JBOSSCP org.jboss.Shutdown --shutdown"} Any ideas of what I could try?

  Hello, I am running on xen, Debian 5.0-i386-default. I haven't touched my vps in 2 months then last night I ran the following command: myserver:/usr/bin# apt-get upgrade Reading package lists... The process ksoftirqd/0 uses permanent 15% CPU on our debian squeeze server. 4 root 20 0 0 0 0 R 15.0 0.0 850:59.17 ksoftirqd/0 I already read that this can have various reason like Full harddisk or high network traffic. In our case we do have more or less low network traffic and enough space on hard disk. How can I analyse what causes ksoftirqd/0 to use permanently 15% CPU?

• Windows 7 100% Memory Usage (without any process listed as using that much memory)

  When I plug my external USB 2TB hard drive into my windows 7 box, my RAM usage climbs up to all 4 Gigs (but in task manager it shows that all process are small) and the hard drive is churning like crazy. My CPU is only about 20% utilized All I can think of is there is a Virus scanner or an indexer running like crazy. I've tried to kill all virus scanners (AVG and Windows Security Essentials) and it still keeps going. My computer is completely unusable as everything is constantly swapping. I've tried leaving it on for 2 days now and it still hasn't finished whatever it was doing. Any ideas?

  I have a vb.net web application that talks to a web service. I get the following error if I try to connect to the web service. System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: Server was unable to process request. The strange thing is it is working fine on one of the set of servers and on another set of servers, we get this error. The only notable difference between the servers is in the authentication setting in IIS. The server where the it works fine we have the ASP.Net Impersonation disabled, but on the other server I get an error the moment I disable the ASP.Net Impersonation.

  Hello all! I have an application consisting of two windows, one communicates to the other and sends it a struct constaining two integers (In this case two rolls of a dice). I will be using events for the following circumstances: Process a sends data to process b, process b displays data Process a closes, in turn closing process b Process b closes a, in turn closing process a I have noticed that if the second process is constantly waiting for the first process to send data then the program will be just sat waiting, which is where the idea of implementing threads on each process occured. I have already implemented a thread on the first process which currently creates the data to send to the second process and makes it available to the second process. The problem i'm having is that I don't exactly have a lot of experience with threads and events so I'm not sure of the best way to actually implement what I want to do. • SQLAlchemy session management in long-running process

  Scenario: A .NET-based application server (Wonderware IAS/System Platform) hosts automation objects that communicate with various equipment on the factory floor. CPython is hosted inside this application server (using Python for .NET). The automation objects have scripting functionality built-in (using a custom, .NET-based language). These scripts call Python functions. The Python functions are part of a system to track Work-In-Progress on the factory floor. The purpose of the system is to track the produced widgets along the process, ensure that the widgets go through the process in the correct order, and check that certain conditions are met along the process. The widget production history and widget state is stored in a relational database, this is where SQLAlchemy plays its part. Should I call session.remove()? The SQLAlchemy session object is a scoped session: # pywip/database.py from sqlalchemy.orm import scoped_session, sessionmaker session = scoped_session(sessionmaker()) I want to keep the session management out of the basic functions. For two reasons: There is another family of functions, sequence functions. The sequence functions call several of the basic functions. One sequence function should equal one database transaction. I need to be able to use the library from other environments. a) From a TurboGears web application. In that case, session management is done by TurboGears. b) From an IPython shell. In that case, commit/rollback will be explicit. (I am truly sorry for the long question. But I felt I needed to explain the scenario. Perhaps not necessary?)

  While I was trying to change the brightness and contrast of Image using C#, but I could not get success in changing the contrast of the Image. May I expect any support from here. I am using ColorMatrix to do that.   I am creating a simple green screen app with Python 2.7.4 but am getting quite slow results. I am currently using PIL 1.1.7 to load and iterate the images and saw huge speed-ups changing from the old getpixel() to the newer load() and pixel access object indexing.   Hi I'm using sorl-thumbnail in a Django 1.2 (currently 1.2 RC) project and getting a surprising failure of four of sorl's built-in unit tests. Essentially, the resized images are all 1px shorter than the unit tests expect them to be. See below for details I'm developing on OSX 10.5.8 (not Snow Leopard) with Python 2.5.1 (r251:54863, Feb 6 2009, 19:02:12) and PIL 1.1.6. Any thoughts what might be up? • Any good source of explanatory documentation on ColorMatrix?

  I'd like to try using ColorMatrix, but am only able to find examples that convert an image to grayscale. And even then, they tend to be presented as a chunk of 'magic numbers' code with no explanation. Does anyone know of a 'tutorial' on how to use ColorMatrix? For example I'd be interested in converting a grayscale image to a color image, where white == transparent, and black = a solid color, with gray pixels somewhere in between. Could ColorMatrix do that?

  As I'm bringing in images into my program, I want to determine if: they have an alpha-channel if that alpha-channel is used #1 is simple enough with using Image.IsAlphaPixelFormat. For #2 though, other than looping through every single pixel, is there a simple way I can determine if at least one of the pixels has an alpha channel that is used (i.e. set to some other value than 255)? All I need back is a boolean and then I'll make determination as to whether to save it out to 32-bit or 24-bit.

This is impossible to do in standard way due to memory limitations (such big image will throw OOMException). Is there any library which offers file-backed stream image generation? Or I could generate many smaller stripes of images (each stripe representing a row of the large image) using standard Bitmap approach, but I need to merge them together afterwards - is there any method how to merge many smaller images into one large without having to instantiate large Bitmap instance (which would again cause OOM)?
