    Hi people, I am new to Java but have experience programming in C/C++/C#. I wanted to learn Java SE 6 first before moving to Java EE 6. After making some research online for appropriate Java SE 6 books, I found that these are appropriate for me to get an excellent idea of Java SE 6: 1) Head First Java, 2nd Edition 2) An Intermediate Level Book <----------- 3) Effective Java (2nd Edition) 4) Java Concurrency in Practice 5) Java Generics and Collections 6) Java Concise Reference Series: Swing And AWT 7) Java Reflection in Action However, I am having trouble choosing an Intermediate Level Book which will provide me with breadth and depth in Java SE 6. I was thinking about the book "Thinking in Java (4th Edition)"....Unfortunately, its deals with Java SE 5 and not the latest version. Could anybody please advice me an intermediate level book which could provide me with breadth and depth in Java SE 6. Regards

  • Live output from .jar executed by PHP

    I have a php-script which executes a .jar-file: <?php passthru("java -jar nlp-server.jar 9000"); ?> I want to display the output generated by this .jar-file on a website. The problematic part is the fact that the .jar-file doesnt finish executing because its a server-application. Thus navigating to the php-file wont help and I didnt manage to make AJAX work either. Is there a way to display the "live" output of the .jar-file on a website?

    I have a PHP web application environment. I am using Slim Framework as REST interface for my application. My application front-end is written using Backbone.js and jQuery. There is a utility (.jar file) which when I use command line makes a remote call (I guess this is a Web Service) which returns me the data. how do I best incorporate this into my webapplication described on top? My application front end will have a Button that should make an AJAX call to the REST Interface and fetch the data as JSON. My approach: PHP-REST interface url is: /api/phprestapi.php exists Add a JAVA-REST interface at url: /api/javarestapi.java (Perhaps) to separate these two Existing Environment: LAMP Stack on Ubuntu How do I achieve this? What is the kind of effort involved? Thanks for your pointers

  • Php security question

    I have a linux server, and I am about to upload a classifieds website to it. The website is php based. That means php code adds/removes classifieds, with the help of the users offcourse. The php-code then adds/removes a classified to a database index called Solr (like MySql). Problem is that anybody can currently access the database, but I only want the website to access the database (solr). Solr is on port 8983 as standard btw. My Q is, if I add a rule in my firewall (iptables), to only allow connections coming from the servers IP to the Solr port nr, would this solve my issue? Thanks

  • Google AppEngine java.net.Socket is restricted error

    I'm using Quercus/PHP on AppEngine. When I run a simple script with file_get_contents($url); I get an error: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: java.net.Socket is a restricted class. Please see the Google App Engine developer's guide for more details. I've googled and although I find that other's have run into the same error, but the cause seems the vary. What do you think is cousing this error for me? I'm using the latest AppEngine Java SDK, and the latest Quercus.

    I am using Xampp for a local dev server, I am trying to upgrade it so I can use the latest version of PHP. I had it installed in my c drive c:\webserver\php I just installed everything new in a new drive D d:\webserver\php I then boot everything up and then I run phpinfo() and it is still showing my old version of PHP and even points to the old php installation C:\webserver\php\php.ini Am I missing something obvious here?

Why? How can I fix this? page2.php is creating some more sessions after some processing is done and a response is sent back to page1.php. The submit button of the form on page1.php is hit and the page gets POST'ed to page3.php. But when the SESSION info that gets created in page2.php is echoed, it's blank signifying that SESSIONS from page2.php are not used. How can I fix this? I looked over a lot of information and have spent about 50 hours trying to do different things with my scripts before arriving at the above conclusions. My app. is custom made using function (not OOPS) and does not use any PHP frameworks & I am not even about to use any as my knowledge of OOP concepts is limited any many frameworks are object oriented. I came across race conditions, but the solutions provided don't help too much. One more solution of using DB to hold sessions and seek and retrieve from DB is the last thing on my mind and I really want to avoid creating table, coding and maintaining code for a task as simple as just keeping sessions across pages in the same domain. So my request is: Is there a way that I can solve the above problem(s) via simple coding in present conditions? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

  • Java JRE 1.6.0_65 Certified with Oracle E-Business Suite

    The latest Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0_65 (a.k.a. JRE 6u65-b14) and later updates on the JRE 6 codeline are now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12 for Windows-based desktop clients. Effects of new support dates on Java upgrades for EBS environments Support dates for the E-Business Suite and Java have changed.  Please review the sections below for more details: What does this mean for Oracle E-Business Suite users? Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JRE 7 for Windows desktop clients? Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JDK 7 for EBS application tier servers? All JRE 6 and 7 releases are certified with EBS upon release Our standard policy is that all E-Business Suite customers can apply all JRE updates to end-user desktops from JRE 1.6.0_03 and later updates on the 1.6 codeline, and from JRE 7u10 and later updates on the JRE 7 codeline.  We test all new JRE 1.6 and JRE 7 releases in parallel with the JRE development process, so all new JRE 1.6 and 7 releases are considered certified with the E-Business Suite on the same day that they're released by our Java team.  You do not need to wait for a certification announcement before applying new JRE 1.6 or JRE 7 releases to your EBS users' desktops. What's new in in this Java release?Java 6 is now available only via My Oracle Support for E-Business Suite users.  You can find links to this release, including Release Notes, documentation, and the actual Java downloads here: All Java SE Downloads on MOS (Note 1439822.1) 32-bit and 64-bit versions certified This certification includes both the 32-bit and 64-bit JRE versions. 32-bit JREs are certified on: Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Service Pack 2 (SP2) Windows 7 and Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) 64-bit JREs are certified only on 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Worried about the 'mismanaged session cookie' issue? No need to worry -- it's fixed.  To recap: JRE releases 1.6.0_18 through 1.6.0_22 had issues with mismanaging session cookies that affected some users in some circumstances. The fix for those issues was first included in JRE 1.6.0_23. These fixes will carry forward and continue to be fixed in all future JRE releases.  In other words, if you wish to avoid the mismanaged session cookie issue, you should apply any release after JRE 1.6.0_22. Implications of Java 6 End of Public Updates for EBS Users The Support Roadmap for Oracle Java is published here: Oracle Java SE Support Roadmap The latest updates to that page (as of Sept. 19, 2012) state (emphasis added): Java SE 6 End of Public Updates Notice After February 2013, Oracle will no longer post updates of Java SE 6 to its public download sites. Existing Java SE 6 downloads already posted as of February 2013 will remain accessible in the Java Archive on Oracle Technology Network. Developers and end-users are encouraged to update to more recent Java SE versions that remain available for public download. For enterprise customers, who need continued access to critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6 or older versions, long term support is available through Oracle Java SE Support . What does this mean for Oracle E-Business Suite users? EBS users fall under the category of "enterprise users" above.  Java is an integral part of the Oracle E-Business Suite technology stack, so EBS users will continue to receive Java SE 6 updates from February 2013 to the end of Java SE 6 Extended Support in June 2017. In other words, nothing changes for EBS users after February 2013.  EBS users will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6 until the end of Java SE 6 Extended Support in June 2017.  How can EBS customers obtain Java 6 updates after the public end-of-life? Coexistence of JRE 6 and JRE 7 on Windows desktops The upgrade to JRE 7 is highly recommended for EBS users, but some users may need to run both JRE 6 and 7 on their Windows desktops for reasons unrelated to the E-Business Suite. Most EBS configurations with IE and Firefox use non-static versioning by default. JRE 7 will be invoked instead of JRE 6 if both are installed on a Windows desktop. For more details, see "Appendix B: Static vs. Non-static Versioning and Set Up Options" in Notes 290807.1 and 393931.1. Applying Updates to JRE 6 and JRE 7 to Windows desktops Auto-update will keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with JRE 7 installed. Auto-update will only keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with both JRE 6 and 7 installed.  JRE 6 users are strongly encouraged to apply the latest Critical Patch Updates as soon as possible after each release.     So I have to preface that I'm not familiar with tomcat/catalina, but trying to troubleshoot this anyway.   • Realtek RTL8111/8168B wired network doesn't work anymore

    This sounds like it's a common problem upgrading 11.04, but I am having trouble finding a common solution, and one that will work for me. I just applied updates via the update manager and now my wired network connection is down. I know Ubuntu network settings is the issue, because I have a dual-boot with Win 7 and my network/internet is fine on Win 7. I don't know too much about networking, so what can I do to trouble shoot this issue? I can choose an older grub version, 2.6.38-8 instead of 2.6.38-11 and this does not resolve the issue.   • How to make sure Solr/Lucene won't die with java.lang.OutOfMemoryError?

    I'm really puzzled why it keeps dying with java.lang.OutOfMemoryError during indexing even though it has a few GBs of memory. Is there a fundamental reason why it needs manual tweaking of config files / jvm parameters instead of it just figuring out how much memory is available and limiting itself to that? No other programs except Solr ever have this kind of problem. Yes, I can keep tweaking JVM heap size every time such crashes happen, but this is all so backwards.   • Building a Java EE app on Mac OS X Snow Leopard for Glassfish 3

    I'm having a bit of a problem building a Java Enterprise Edition web application on Mac OS X 10.6.2 using Ant 1.7.1, Glassfish v3 and Java EE 6. The problem is that the build process does not find the Java EE libraries which fair enough as I don't think Apple supply them with the default Java installation but I know they exist in the Glassfish distribution. Which jars are the correct ones to build against (I'm assuming javaee.jar is a general jar which references all the other needed jars) and what should I be putting in my ant build.xml file? Any help is very much appreciated.

  • Looking for good PHP editor or IDE with 'IntelliSense'

    Hello, I'm looking for suitable PHP Editor or IDE with syntax auto-completion. I've tried trial versions of programs like Zend Studio, PHPDesigner, NetBeans PHP, NuSphere PhpED, and similar -- but none of them fully satisfied me. I quite liked hint window with detailed info about what function does and what it returns. Also I liked the way NetBeans auto-complete code (for example inserts all required parameters in function declaration as "dummy fields" and then you can jump between them using TAB in order to edit them). On the other hand, environment of NetBeans doesn't belong to the nicest. In this regard I prefer PHPDesigner with its sleek and light interface. At this moment I don't use any of the debugging options, since I don't know yet how to use profiller, breakpoints, watches and what not, so at this point my only concern is good autocompletion. For this purpose NetBean would be great choice, but with future in mind I am not sure debugging will be good in NetBeans, especially as I would prefer to use remote Linux server for this. So in short, I'm looking for editor that: Have similar code auto-completion (IntelliSense) like NetBeans Allow you to debug code using remote server (or sets up own debugging server like PHPDesigner does) without need to run Apache and similar on local computer Is preferably easy to use / intuitive interface Any ideas?

  • Permanently write variables to a php file with php

    I need to be able to permanently change variables in a php file using php. I am creating a multilanguage site using codeigniter and using the language helper which stores the text in php files in variables in this format: $lang['title'] = "Stuff"; I've been able to access the plain text of the files using fopen() etc and I it seems that I could probably locate the areas I want to edit with with regular expressions and rewrite the file once I've made the changes but it seems a bit hacky. Is there any easy way to edit these variables permanently using php? Cheers
