• C++ strongly typed typedef

  I've been trying to think of a way of declaring strongly typed typedefs, to catch a certain class of bugs in the compilation stage. It's often the case that I'll typedef an int into several types of ids, or a vector to position or velocity: typedef int EntityID; typedef int ModelID; typedef Vector3 Position; typedef Vector3 Velocity; This can make the intent of code more clear, but after a long night of coding one might make silly mistakes like comparing different kinds of ids, or adding a position to a velocity perhaps. EntityID eID; ModelID mID; if ( eID == mID ) // <- Compiler sees nothing wrong { /*bug*/ } Position p; Velocity v; Position newP = p + v; // bug, meant p + v*s but compiler sees nothing wrong Unfortunately, suggestions I've found for strongly typed typedefs include using boost, which at least for me isn't a possibility (I do have c++11 at least). So after a bit of thinking, I came upon this idea, and wanted to run it by someone. First, you declare the base type as a template. The template parameter isn't used for anything in the definition, however: template < typename T > class IDType { unsigned int m_id; public: IDType( unsigned int const& i_id ): m_id {i_id} {}; friend bool operator==<T>( IDType<T> const& i_lhs, IDType<T> const& i_rhs ); }; Friend functions actually need to be forward declared before the class definition, which requires a forward declaration of the template class. We then define all the members for the base type, just remembering that it's a template class. Finally, when we want to use it, we typedef it as: class EntityT; typedef IDType<EntityT> EntityID; class ModelT; typedef IDType<ModelT> ModelID; The types are now entirely separate. Functions that take an EntityID will throw a compiler error if you try to feed them a ModelID instead, for example. Aside from having to declare the base types as templates, with the issues that entails, it's also fairly compact. I was hoping anyone had comments or critiques about this idea? One issue that came to mind while writing this, in the case of positions and velocities for example, would be that I can't convert between types as freely as before. Where before multiplying a vector by a scalar would give another vector, so I could do: typedef float Time; typedef Vector3 Position; typedef Vector3 Velocity; Time t = 1.0f; Position p = { 0.0f }; Velocity v = { 1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f }; Position newP = p + v*t; With my strongly typed typedef I'd have to tell the compiler that multypling a Velocity by a Time results in a Position. class TimeT; typedef Float<TimeT> Time; class PositionT; typedef Vector3<PositionT> Position; class VelocityT; typedef Vector3<VelocityT> Velocity; Time t = 1.0f; Position p = { 0.0f }; Velocity v = { 1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f }; Position newP = p + v*t; // Compiler error To solve this, I think I'd have to specialize every conversion explicitly, which can be kind of a bother. On the other hand, this limitation can help prevent other kinds of errors (say, multiplying a Velocity by a Distance, perhaps, which wouldn't make sense in this domain). So I'm torn, and wondering if people have any opinions on my original issue, or my approach to solving it.

  Hey all I'm just trying to add another quad to my frustum and when doing so I get this weird little error. What happens is the bottom left side of my quad seems to stick to the center point for no apparent reason that I can think of and or figure out from. has anyone else experienced this issue and knows a solution or would you like more information please do ask. here is my main.cpp file http://pastebin.com/g9q8uAsd I think its because of 2 different quad vertex array data is in the same array.

• Is it bad practice to apply class-based design to JavaScript programs?

  JavaScript is a prototyped-based language, and yet it has the ability to mimic some of the features of class-based object-oriented languages. For example, JavaScript does not have a concept of public and private members, but through the magic of closures, it's still possible to provide the same functionality. Similarly, method overloading, interfaces, namespaces and abstract classes can all be added in one way or another. Lately, as I've been programming in JavaScript, I've felt like I'm trying to turn it into a class-based language instead of using it in the way it's meant to be used. It seems like I'm trying to force the language to conform to what I'm used to. The following is some JavaScript code I've written recently. • Mysterious dbboon folder with proxy.php file on my godaddy account

  When doing some web maintenance today, I noticed a strange new folder on my GoDaddy hosting account at the root level named "dbboon", with a single file inside, called proxy.php. It's code is listed below, and seems to be some sort of proxy function. I was kind of troubled because I didn't put it there. I googled all this to learn more, but didn't find anything, except for the proxy file happened to be also stored at pastebin.com: http://pastebin.com/PQsSPbCr I called GoDaddy and they confirmed that it belonged to them, said it was put there by their advanced hosting group for testing purposes but didn't have any more information.   I have developed a HTTP Handler Web Service, and have had it successfully deployed, through testing on other environments i've ran into another problem. This is the error message I receive: You have attempted to execute a CGI, ISAPI, or other executable program from a directory that does not allow programs to be executed. HTTP Error 403.1 - Forbidden: Execute access is denied. Internet Information Services (IIS) So it is obvious what needs to be fixed, so: 1) Start Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. 2) Right-click the Web site that contains the SharePoint Web site that you created, and then click Properties. 3) Click the Home Directory tab. 4) Under Application settings, click either Scripts only in the Execute permissions list or Scripts and Executables in the Execute permissions list (as appropriate to your situation). Click OK. 5) Quit IIS Manager. But I'm still getting the same error. So what else could be wrong?

I have a div on a page with a CSS height:200px setting, which makes the DIV have a vertical scroll bar, which allows the user to scroll through a bunch of text. I would like to animate the DIV to expand in height until all content in the div is shown, meaning no more scroll bar I tried the following: $("#view-container").animate({"height": "auto"}, "slow"); but that didn't work while this does: $("#view-container").animate({"height": "1000px"}, "slow"); problem with that is the text size in the DIV is variable. • SMTP 552 4.3.1 Session size exceeds fixed maximum session size.

  I'm having a frustrating problem with one of our clients who is running an exchange SMTP server. I have an emailing component that is written in .net and I've specifically used Mono DLL's to ensure that the email component sends the ELO and QUIT command for each message it sends. Each mail I send will never exceed 10MB's including attachments, which is lower than the session size value set in the clients exchange configuration. Still the problem persists. Any ideas where to look?

Understand that a fiber optic cable is not a perfect medium thus data only travels close to the speed of light. • Chipset fan on the frtiz - compressed air hasn't fixed anything - is there anything I can do?

  Yesterday, my computer started to make an annoying whining noise. Knowing that this is likely a fan issue, I opened the case and proceeded to determine which fan was causing the issue. I got some compressed air and tried cleaning out the dust around it (and the rest of the computer while I was at it). This hasn't seemed to fix the issue. Now, if it were just any fan, I would probably just replace the fan - they're relatively cheap after all. However, this is a special fan. Aside: For what its worth, I feel bad that the graphics card blocks part of the fan, but it is the only slot the graphics card fits, so I had no choice. After pulling out my motherboard user guide, it looks like this is a fan placed directly on top of the chipset. To be perfectly honest, I have no clue what the purpose of the chipset is - but it sounds important. After some quick research, I see that it is responsible for providing the bridge between my CPU, RAM and graphics, among other things. Just a quick search at Newegg tells me that chipset fans can be purchased at pretty reasonable prices (< 20 dollars). Is it practical to replace this fan? It is an old computer as computers go and I wouldn't be terribly upset to upgrade the motherboard and processor, so perhaps this is a sign.   On windows, when I plugged in the usb connector, to the device was recognized as a mass storage device and installed all the drivers, to my computer, then the device, automatically restarted and started behaving like a modem, I'm writing this post, using the same modem, through windows... On linux mint (debian kernel, similar to ubuntu 8.10), the device is recognized as a mass storage device, some times, but, has no programs, useful for linux... When I use the modem on windows and restart the computer and login to linux, the device shows up as "not yet configured" in the terminal command "lsusb"... I googled a lot for solutions, tried many things, atlast, configured it and run the command "wvdial". But, get the error, that the modem is not responding, at last ! :'( Please help me out... Many more people are facing this problem, as I could discover, when I googled for it. this is the website address of huawei, the company of my modem... • Could hybrid SSD + HDD be made with fixed internal partitions?

  I was pretty close to getting Seagate's Momentus XT but have been scared off by the many problems reported on forums and feedback sites, especially in Mac Book Pros. So I'm waiting for mk 2 with some extra flash and better reliablilty I'm assuming will come out this year. What would suit me better though is a 32+500 hybrid drive where I have more control over what is on the flash drive and what is on the disk drive. So there are 2 physical partitions within the one 2.5" hard drive enclosure which use different media internally (32GB for core files and 500GB for data and multimedia). The partitions would be locked so they can't be changed. - Or even better, the disk driver just makes them appear as two disks to the OS that share the same bus... Perhaps it's ok if the bios just sees the first drive until the OS is loaded. Is either of it technically possible? Obviously difficult to market outside of the enthusiast market. The SSD memory modules can be pretty small right, so they could even make them a card that plugs into a secondary connection on the enclosure. That would be good for computer builders as well as for upgrading and recoverability. Then future operating systems could recognise these system SSD drives and automatically install the OS + swap files on it. While placing document libraries on the larger data drive. While in the longer term HDD will probably disapear there will always be a trade off between speed, storage size and expense.

  I have a split view-based app that presents a master-detail interface, and uses a popover to present the master list when in portrait mode. I can tap the tool bar button to present the master list, scroll to whatever row, and tap the row to dismiss the popover. My problem is that if the table is scrolled past the top of the second section, when I dismiss the popover and then later tap the toolbar button to re-present it, the table's scroll position is always set such that the first row of the second section is at the top of the list. If I haven't scrolled past the top of the second section, it correctly remembers its scroll position when the table is presented again. Similarly, in landscape mode, if I scroll the table past the top of the third section and then rotate to portrait, when I come back to landscape the scroll position is always set such that the first row of the third section is at the top of the list. I tried calling -scrollToNearestSelectedRowAtScrollPosition:animated in both the master view controller's -viewWillAppear, as well as in the split view delegate's splitViewController:popoverController:willPresentViewController:, to no effect. Anybody have a clue what I might be doing wrong?

  I have been working on a project and Stack Overflow has helped me with a few problems so far, so I am very thankful! My question is this: I have an array like this: var records:Object = {}; var arr:Array = [ records["nh"] = { medinc:66303, statename:"New Hampshire"}, records["ct"] = { medinc:65958, statename:"Connecticut"}, records["nj"] = { medinc:65173, statename:"New Jersey"}, records["md"] = { medinc:64596, statename:"Maryland"}, etc... for all 50 states. And then I have the array sorted reverse numerically (descending) like this: arr.sortOn("medinc", Array.NUMERIC); arr.reverse(); Can I call the name of the record (i.e. "nj" for new jersey) and then get the value from the numeric position above and below the record in the array? Basically, medinc is medium income of US states, and I am trying to show a ranking system... a user would click Texas for example, and it would show the medinc value for Texas, along with the state the ranks one position below and the state that ranks one position above in the array.
