    Trying to figure out how is product data/metadata schema designed. For example, how does an e-commerce site enter a product spec. Does it copy and paste from mfg spec sheet, enters it in their own fields or something else?   • Why is rails setting ":null => false" on all my columns in schema.rb?

    Even if I never specify :null => false in my migrations that initially add columns to tables, rails still generates code in schema.rb that specifies the columns as having :null => false. Why is this? If I develop on my box, and then use rake db:schema:load on my production box, I'm going to get very different behavior! Edit: Even if I delete schema.rb and run rake db:schema:dump, it still puts :null => false on the new schema even if it isn't defined like that in the actual database. It seems it can't tell whether or not a column is marked as allowing nulls. I'm using SQLite if that helps.

    I am using a xsd schema file; there I specified an ordered list. When parsing an XML node of the kind... <myOrderedList> "element_1" "element_2" "element_3" </myOrderedList> (which is valid XML syntax) ...all XML parsers I know parse this as a single node element. Is there a way to get the XML parser parse this list for me (return it as a list or an array or whatever) or do I always have to parse it myself?

    I'm learning Rails, and the target of my experiments is to realize something similar to Zoho Creator, Flexlist or Mytaskhelper, i.e. an app where the user can create his own database schema and views. What's the best strategy to pursue this? I saw something about the Entity-Attribute-Value but I'm not sure whether it's the best strategy or if there is some support in Rails for it. If there was any tutorial in Rails about a similar project it would be great. Probably it's not the easiest star for learning a new language and framework, but it would be something I really plan to do since a long time.

  • Codeigniter: how should I restructure db schema?

    I don't even know if that's the right term. May it be known that I'm a major novice! I have three tables: users, profiles, and survey. Each one has user_id as it's first field, (auto-increment for users), and they're all tied by a foreign key constraint, CASCADE on DELETE. Currently, for each user, let's say user_id 1, they have a corresponding db entry in the other tables. For profiles it lists all their information, and the survey table holds all their survey information. Now I must change things...darn scope creep. Users need the ability to have multiple survey results. I imagine that this would be similar to a comment table for a blog... My entire app runs around the idea that a single user is linked to a constraining profile and survey. How should I structure my db? How should I design my app's db so that a user can have multiple tests/profiles for the test? Please assist! Any advice, information and personal-knowledge is appreciated! Right now the only way I know how to accompany my client is to create a pseudo-user for each test (so unnecessary) and list them in a view table (called "your tests")-- these are obtained from the db by saying: where user_id=manager_id

    Many thanks for your help on this. In order for an entreprise to get a call for tender it must meet certain requirements. For the first example the enterprise must have a minimal class 4, and have qualification 2 in sector 5. Minimal class is always one number. Qualification can be anything (single, or multiple using AND, OR logical operators) I have created tables in order to map each number to it's given name. I am trying to get input from you guys on which is better approach for the SOA application: Here is the requirement: We want to develop SOA application that helps other vendors to integrate with our system. I also understand for some clients we need to bring new fields to support the integration. Solution Needed: Looking for either one SOA application which can handle all the clients to do the integration with our system. Question Is it possible to do so? Because we might have different contracts possibly bringing new fields coming into the contracts. (or) Develop a another SOA service if the service contract changes and have a front gate SOA service to divert the call to the appropriate SOA services based on the version [Probably mentioned in the SOAP header].     I tried session.createSQLQuery("ALTER TABLE People MODIFY address VARCHAR(1000);").executeUpdate(); but this throws org.hibernate.exception.SQLGrammarException: could not execute native bulk manipulation query After a lot of googling, the recommendation is to use HQL instead of SQL query to do bulk updates. Not sure how to use HQL to accomplish this. There seems to be no decent HQL documentation for updating column length in a table. Thanks so much for the help.

    I know having DEFAULT NULLS is not a good practice but I have many optional lookup values which are FK in the system so to solve this issue here is what i am doing: I use NOT NULL for every FK / lookup valve field. I have the first row in every table which is PK id = 1 as a dummy row with just "none" in all the columns. this way I can use NOT NULL in my schema and if needed reference to the none row values which should be null. Is this a good design or any other work arounds?

    Hi, my xml file has a tag with an attribute "containsValue" which contains the "special" characters you can see in the subject: <original_msg_body id="msgBodySpecialCharsRule" containsValue=";ìè+òàù-<^èç°§_>!£$%&/()=?~`'#;" /> in my xml schema the attribute has xs:string: <xs:attribute name="containsValue" type="xs:string" /> I use this value inside a Java software which check if this value is contained inside another String. but I always obtain this Exception: javax.xml.bind.UnmarshalException - with linked exception: [org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: The value of attribute "containsValue" associated with an element type "original_msg_body" must not contain the '<' character.] How can I solve it? I've tried changing the attribute type to xs:NMTOKEN, ut I get the same exception. Is there any other type? I think I could change the characters encoding, for example using the HTML representation, like <, but than could be tricky for the string comparison...

The generated verse-unit objects gives me a list of objects (begin-line, begin-block-indent, etc), and also another list of string objects that represent the bits of string throughout the xml.   • DNSBL listed at zen.spamhaus.org - cant get outgoing mail working? Am I interpreting the response correctly?

    I have problem with a mailserver and there is something I kind of not understand! I can connect, authenticate, specify the sender address - but when specifying the reciever i get a error 550 which looks like so: RCPT TO:[email protected] 550-DNSBL listed at zen.spamhaus.org 550 http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=62.178.15.161 Now the strange thing is that 62.178.15.161 is my local client address. Not the servers ip address. Also the error code 550 seems to be defined as so: 550 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable To me that makes totally no sense. Why this error code with this spamhaus message? Why the local ip adress and not the servers? There is exim running and there is nothing turning up in the logs mail.err mail.info mail.log mail.warn in /var/log I looked up both the servers and the clients ip adress on blacklists. The clients ip adress is listed on some (as expected), but the server is totally clean. Here is the complete telnet log when I reproduced the error. So it really looks like the server does check the IP wich establiches the connection is in some blacklist. This is theoretically a good thing - but - the authentication on the server should prevent that? Or shouldn't it? Well I just think it would be absurd if I couldn't send email over my smtp server from my dynamic ISP connection because the dynamic is listed, altough i have a clean server with login?
