  • How do I add a shapefile in ArcGIS via python scripting?

    I am trying to automate various tasks in ArcGIS Desktop (using ArcMap generally) with Python, and I keep needing a way to add a shape file to the current map. (And then do stuff to it, but that's another story). The best I can do so far is to add a layer file to the current map, using the following ("addLayer" is a layer file object): def AddLayerFromLayerFile(addLayer): import arcpy mxd = arcpy.mapping.MapDocument("CURRENT") df = arcpy.mapping.ListDataFrames(mxd, "Layers")[0] arcpy.mapping.AddLayer(df, addLayer, "AUTO_ARRANGE") arcpy.RefreshActiveView() arcpy.RefreshTOC() del mxd, df, addLayer However, my raw data is always going be shape files, so I need to be able to open them. (Equivantly: convert a shape file to a layer file wiothout opening it, but I'd prefer not to do that).

  • Scripting help - need to get phone number of AD accounts and then add them to contacts in trusted domain

    I have domain accounts that I have created as contacts in another trusted domain so that they can see them in their Exchange GAL. I need a way to extract the phone number field from UserA (user account) in DomainA and import it into UserA (contact) in DomainB. I get the logic, it's just the code (vbscript/powershell/whatever) that eludes me. The logic as I see it: Connect to source AD (ou/subtree) Extract user accounts from OU and subcontainers including first name, last name, display name, and phone number Connect to target AD (ou/subtree) Verify/match contact with extract in #2 above based on display name Update phone field with phone number in extract Write log of success and failures Anybody able to help?

    Hi there, I'd like to implement my own script engine using the QtScript component and other Qt components. Since this should be an open source (GPL) application I thought I would be free to do this. But now I found a page at Qt's website that made me doubtful about it: What are the restrictions with releasing scriptable applications? Unless the scripter has a Qt license, the following restrictions apply: The application itself may not primarily be a script development tool. The Qt API may not be made directly scriptable. Scripts may not alter the main functionality of the application. If the major part of the application is developed with a compiled programming language and only some non-core parts of the application are made extendable/modifiable through Qt Script, the scripter does not need to purchase a Qt or QSA license.   • scripting fruityloops or propellerheads reason from VB or Python?

    I have both Fruityloops and Propellerheads Reason software synths on my Windows PC. Any way I can get at and script these from either Visual Basic or Python? Or at least send Midi messages to the synths from code? Update : attempts to use something like a "midi-mapper" (thanks for link MusiGenesis) don't seem to work. I don't think Reason or FL Studio act like standard GM Midi synths. Update 2 : If you're interested in this question, check out this too.

  • What are the arguments against the inclusion of server side scripting in JavaScript code blocks?

    I've been arguing for some time against embedding server-side tags in JavaScript code, but was put on the spot today by a developer who seemed unconvinced The code in question was a legacy ASP application, although this is largely unimportant as it could equally apply to ASP.NET or PHP (for example). The example in question revolved around the use of a constant that they had defined in ServerSide code. 'VB Const MY_CONST: MY_CONST = 1 If sMyVbVar = MY_CONST Then 'Do Something End If //JavaScript if (sMyJsVar === "<%= MY_CONST%>"){ //DoSomething } My standard arguments against this are: Script injection: The server-side tag could include code that can break the JavaScript code Unit testing. Harder to isolate units of code for testing Code Separation : We should keep web page technologies apart as much as possible. The reason for doing this was so that the developer did not have to define the constant in two places. They reasoned that as it was a value that they controlled, that it wasn't subject to script injection. This reduced my justification for (1) to "We're trying to keep the standards simple, and defining exception cases would confuse people" The unit testing and code separation arguments did not hold water either, as the page itself was a horrible amalgam of HTML, JavaScript, ASP.NET, CSS, XML....you name it, it was there. No code that was every going to be included in this page could possibly be unit tested. So I found myself feeling like a bit of a pedant insisting that the code was changed, given the circumstances. Are there any further arguments that might support my reasoning, or am I, in fact being a bit pedantic in this insistence?

    in object oriented php mysqli I am trying to request a username, and return if it matches a row, without actually returning any user data. How would I write this?...so far I have... $sql = "SELECT NULL FROM database WHERE usernick=?"; $stmt = $link->prepare($sql) $stmt->bind_param('s', $snr); $stmt->execute(); After this step I need to see if a row matched the query...but I have no idea how to write it, everyone here pretty much writes in mysql if I dont mention I want object oriented mysqli :S

  • Should I use parameters in template scripting to control the output, or a separate specialized template?

    Would it be considered best practice to use a single template that changes it's output based on script values, or have multiple templates, and use the view to pick the correct one instead? For example, in this underscope template: <script type="text/template" id="SkillsetTemplate"> <div class='RegularMode <%= (skillset.get('InEditMode')===false)?'show':'hide' %>'> </div> <div class='EditMode <%= (skillset.get('InEditMode')===true)?'show':'hide' %>'> </div> </script> I use a backbone model to bind against, and use the InEditMode attribute to pick which content to render. Should I instead have a normal mode, and an edit mode template, and use the attribute on the model to pick the template ? For background purposes, I am using backbone.js with underscore templates and an MVC3 backend.

  • Are AJAX calls to a sub-domain considered Cross Site Scripting?

    I have Server A (www.example.com) sending information to Server B. I can only have HTML / JS on Server A (and have to do the "crunching" on Server B) so I'm trying to send form data via AJAX (trying to avoid a form post to Server B - don't ask). Obviously doing an AJAX call cross-domain is considered XSS and a big no-no, but if I were to put Server B in a subdomain (sub.example.com), would that be considered okay? How are cross-domain errors detected? Does the browser look up DNS records? IP address? Thanks in advance for you help.

  • What's the most auditable way to organize database maintenance scripting/scheduling?

    I'm using PHP, Oracle and crontab. Crontab is invoking a php script, which is going to synchronize some data between a local and remote database. First I thought about putting this all in one large, anonymous inline PL/SQL block and executing it in PHP. The problem is that without creating a table to audit the procedure it's really opaque to my PHP code until it returns. And then when it does return, the best I can do is receive a string in an out parameter which I've concatenated together as an audit log. Then I considered breaking it up into several SQL statements and have PHP do some intermediate auditing/logging and manipulation of the data between each of them. I'm not really satisfied with either of these. How do you organize maintenance code that is called in a cronjob?

    When an external JavaScript file is referenced, <script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery-1.4.4.min.js"></script> is the JavaScript source (lines of code before interpretation) available from the DOM or window context in the current HTML page? I mean by using only standard JavaScript without any installed components or tools. I know tools like Firebug trace into external source but it's installed on the platform and likely has special ability outside the context of the browser sandbox.

  • How is this problem usually solved without using sever-side scripting?

    Simple problem I have so far always solved via PHP: You have a site with header, menu, footer and content field. Header, menu and footer are usually the same for each page. How do you, without PHP or any other server-side language, have the header, menu and footer data exist only in one file? So that for example you don't have ten sites (like home.html, products.html, about.html, ..) all having a copy of the static header and menu in their html files. Now if you want to change the header you have to change ten files. I hope I made my question clear enough, if not please leave a comment :)

  • Oracle ODP.NET und Windows PowerShell

    In der Microsoft Welt wohlbekannt, in der Oracle Welt nur ein Schulterzucken hervorrufend - die sogenannten Scripting Guys. Wie der Name bereits vermuten lässt, geht es in deren Hey, Scripting Guy! Blog um Scripting. Und damit natürlich um die Windows PowerShell. Ja, die Zeiten des DOS-Kommandofensters und Batch-Dateien ist vorbei. Die PowerShell ist eine mächtige Scripting-Umgebung unter Windows, die selbst unter Unix/Linux-Administratoren Gefallen finden sollte. Dass man damit wunderbar auch auf Oracle Datenbanken zugreifen kann, haben wir bereits vor Jahren in einer Oracle Workshop Reihe bewiesen. Damals begleitete mich Klaus Rohe von Microsoft, der mit mir dann auch gemeinsam einen Vortrag auf DOAG Konferenz hielt. Unser gemeinsames Ziel war es damals wie heute, die Oracle Anwender von der hervorragenden Integration zwischen Oracle, Windows und .NET zu überzeugen. Was lag näher, als sich dies von beiden Herstellern gemeinsam bestätigen zu lassen? Vor allem die ewigen Zweifler begrüßten dies. Seither war die PowerShell bei mir nicht mehr auf dem Radar und auch Oracle Anwender haben das Thema nicht mehr aufgeworfen. Möglicherweise auch deshalb, weil es zu neu oder zu unbekannt ist? Eher unwahrscheinlich ... Vielleicht liegt es vielmehr daran, dass man einfach mal davon ausgeht, dass PowerShell nur für Microsoft Produkte richtig nutzbar ist? Oder man bekommt erzählt, dass nur die Integration mit der Microsoft-eigenen Datenbank SQL Server möglich ist? Und das ist natürlich nicht richtig - so wie immer (ich denke dabei unter anderem an das Microsoft Active Directory - aber dazu ein andermal mehr). Umso mehr freut es mich, einen brandneuen Blog-Beitrag zu genau diesem Thema zu lesen, auf den mich Alex Keh, (Produkt Manager für Windows und .NET im Oracle Headquarter in San Francisco) aufmerksam gemacht hat. Was die Sache noch besser macht, dieser Beitrag stammt aus der Microsoft Welt und belegt damit zwischen den Zeilen, dass die Oracle Datenbank und unsere .NET Integration via dem Oracle Data Provider for .NET (ODP.NET) auch hier eine bedeutende Rolle spielt. In diesem Sinne: Beide Daumen hoch für die Scripting Guys! Der Beitrag nennt sich Use Oracle ODP.NET and PowerShell to Simplify Data Access und trotz ein paar weniger Ausreißer, ist der Artikel sehr zu empfehlen, um in das Thema einzusteigen. Lassen Sie es mich wissen, wie Sie zu dieser Integration stehen, ob die PowerShell für Sie in der Praxis wichtig ist oder werden könnte, und falls Sie Features vermissen, die Oracle künftig umsetzen sollte.   • Python vs. Perl in ten years time

    If you were starting learning a new language today, for scripting and doing "various stuff" with it (from making useful programs to it being glue to several command line programs), would you go with Python or Perl (or some third option, although the battle usually comes to these two)? I've never much used dynamic languages at all, having been able to do everything I needed in traditional static ones. Did some scripting in Perl a couple of years ago, but that was more of a momentary fling, than an attempt to learn it well. Now I've some free time, and have decided to go along with one of these two, and play a little with them. I like Perl's syntax, but Python does seem to be taking rather big steps on overtaking that area. What do you think, which one is more worth learning and why? Also, what do you think, what will be Python's future in about 10 years ... will it overtake Perl and other scripting languages's as a dominant tool for that kind of work (I more often than not find it being implemented in various applications I'm using - for internal scripting and automating loading of data and similar operations), or will it find a balance and coexist along others (Perl)? What is its current "momentum" - does it comes by default with Linux distributions, as Perl does, or does it needs to be installed separately every time? Is it a language which can be expected "to just be there"?
