  • error 503: Can't deploy rails 3 app with apache + thin (bitnamy ruby stack)

    As you'll notice, I'm a bit of a noob on Rails. Here's the thing I have a EC2 Bitnami RubyStack AMI running. I'm trying to deploy the sample project to be sure I'm doing the right thing, but I'm not getting anywhere at all. I just get a 503 error I'm following bitnami's docs on thin + apache Here are my files: the httpd.conf I include in the main httpd.conf Alias /sample "/home/bitnami/stack/projects/sample/public" <Directory "/home/bitnami/stack/projects/sample/public"> AllowOverride None Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> ProxyPass /sample balancer://appcluster ProxyPassReverse /sample balancer://appcluster <Proxy balancer://appcluster> BalancerMember http://127.0.0.1:3001/sample BalancerMember http://127.0.0.1:3002/sample BalancerMember http://127.0.0.1:3003/sample BalancerMember http://127.0.0.1:3004/sample </Proxy> the thin.yml file chdir: /opt/bitnami/projects/sample environment: production address: 127.0.0.1 port: 3000 timeout: 30 log: log/thin.log pid: tmp/pids/thin.pid max_conns: 1024 max_persistent_conns: 512 require: [] wait: 30 servers: 5 prefix: /sample daemonize: true I'm able to start and stop apache, but thin does not stop correctly though. When I try to stop thin, I get this output /opt/bitnami/projects/sample$ sudo thin -C config/thin.yml stop Stopping server on 127.0.0.1:3000 ...   • ruby on rails server is intermittently slow

    My rails installation was chugging along nicely. Last night we had to perform a hot-patch with was really a standard deploy of some exception code. Once capistrano finished the operation one of our admins discovered that there were two long running passenger processes. While we have deployed release over the past two weeks it would appear that these processes have been here and alive the whole time. Granted they could have been zombies or any other artifact and at this point we do not know what state they were in. Which leads me to the question: There are so many moving parts between the rails application and the OS/hardware that being a SME is probably no longer possible. So; how does a sysadmin perform root-cause analysis with any certainty? And: When do I just start rebooting servers?

    We have a RoR app (rails version 3.2.15 right now). As it has been getting busier, the log-files it's producing are becoming less and less useful for troubleshooting. When that happens, its very, very hard to identify which log-lines belong to which GET. Is it possible to add something like a transaction-ID to these log-lines? The log-spam would be interspersed, but at least grep-magic would give me the unified entries that I need.

  • floating point precision in ruby on rails model validations

    Hello I am trying to validate a dollar amount using a regex: ^[0-9]+\.[0-9]{2}$ This works fine, but whenever a user submits the form and the dollar amount ends in 0(zero), ruby(or rails?) chops the 0 off. So 500.00 turns into 500.0 thus failing the regex validation. Is there any way to make ruby/rails keep the format entered by the user, regardless of trailing zeros?
