• Ideas for band site, which technology to use?

  I am attempting to design and build a website for my friends band. There is minimal content to be included such as bio,news,enbemdded Audio/Visual material. My web dev expertise is average. I'm basicaly looking for inspiration, I was edging towards embedding a silverlight deepzoom xap object to add some visual stimulation, perhaps by featuring a high res photo of the bandshardware/equipment which zooms when mouseover occurs. Does anyone have any cool ideas for a central feature for this site, and which way to approact it in terms of technique (js,css,silverlight etc) If anyone has any immediate ideas which they think would be cool then I am eager to hear them! Also if anyone can link me to any cool band sites they have come across recently I would be greatful,nothing too complicated though please I will be doing all the work myself. Im want the site to be simple but have a certain wow factor!

  I have to undertake a project which is to make a video chat application. The video has to be streamed from one location and can be viewed by multiple people spread out over the globe. Performance is really an issue and a delay of more than 2-3 seconds is unacceptable. From what i gather, this can be done in Flex and also in JAVA. Any performance issues and caveats with a particular approach ? I would really like the pros to comment on this and guide me through. Will be very very helpful. • Laptop authentication/logon via accelerometer tilt, flip, and twist

  Looking for another application/technology: A number of years ago, I read about a novel way to authenticate and log on to a laptop. The user simply had to hold the laptop in the air and execute a simple series of tilts and flips to the laptop. By logging accelerometer data, this creates a unique signature for the user. Even if an attacker watched and repeated the exact same motions, the attacker could not replicate the user's movements closely enough. I am looking for information about this technology again, but I can't find anything. It may have been an actual feature on a laptop, or it may have just been a research project. I think I read about it in a magazine like Wired. Does anyone have more information about authentication via unique accelerometer signatures?   I got cheap Ebay wifi dongle from HongKong, Im trying to set it up on my ubuntu server. Occasionally need to move server, so it cannot always be connected to router via lan. Anyhow, usb wifi came with a driver cd. • What is the format of DXGI_FORMAT_D24_UNORM_S8_UINT?

  I'm trying to read the values in a depth texture of type DXGI_FORMAT_D24_UNORM_S8_UINT. I know this means "24 bits for depth, 8 bits for stencil" "A 32-bit z-buffer format that supports 24 bits for depth and 8 bits for stencil.", but how do you interpret those 24 bits? It's clearly not going to be a 32-bit int, and it's not going to be a 32-bit float. If it is an integer value, how "far away" is a value of "1" in the depth texture?

They have some videos explaining the technology but they only scratch the surface. What do you think about it? Is it programmatically possible? Or is it just a scam for investors?

• Modern monitor technologies - need to find a new monitor

  I'm preparing to change my old LCD monitor for a new one. I have an old NEC 20WGX2 Pro based on an IPS panel. I'm looking for a screen that gives good color output but is very good at gaming at the same time (since it is its primary service). I tend to switch monitors between my different computers at home so it has to be multi purpose, hence IPS technology before. Now, where can I read on newest monitor technologies so I can make an informed decision? I need to find a best fit for myself and I have a very outdated knowledge at the moment. So any hints are greatly appreciated, be it info on technologies, web sources, links to other questions, etc.

• How to explain DRM cannot work?

  I am looking for the shortest comprehensive way to explain to people that are trying to use DRM as a technology to prevent users from using their data in some fashion deemed undesirable, why their solution cannot work by definition. Ideally I'd like something that: Covers why technically it is impossible to have people access local data, but only in such-and-such a way Imparts an understanding of why this is, to avoid follow-on "But what if" rebuttals Is intuitive enough and short enough that even a politician (j/k) could grasp it When faced with this situation I try to be clear and concise, but I usually end up failing at least on one of these points. I'd really like to have a 'stock' answer that I can use in the future.

• Working as Test Engineer and looking to move into Identity Management Technology. Possible?

  I have been working as Test Engineer for past 2.5 year. The project is related to Identity Management and I am in love with the technology. I want to move into the same field. I don't aim to be a hard core coder but rather an analyst or an IDM architect. Is it realistically possible to do so? I see some possible issues, since the field is fairly new in India and for the time being I don't have coding/deployment experience at all. • What technology should I concentrate on for mobile development? [closed]

  Firstly, I have many years experience with C# & .NET and some with Java. But, rather than committing to Java and developing native applications for Andriod I have been researching cross-platform deployment technologies. Currently, the most powerful cross-platform technology seems to be Flash, using Adobe AIR to package software as native applications. But given Adobe's announcement that it will discontinue support for the Flash Player on mobile devices it seems foolish (at this late stage) to invest in Flash and ActionScript as a developer. There has been speculation that Microsoft are also planning their exit strategy for Silverlight in favour of HTML5. So, my questions are; What is the most appropriate technology to invest in and learn in order to build cross-platform mobile applications / games while future proofing my skills as a developer? Is HTML5 mature enough to fill the 'Flash void' and be used to start building cross-platform, rich, interactive, networked mobile applications / games now? N.B. • Am I making the right decision to take Information technology/system as my course in college?

  I am a student who just ended my high school last year. I will be entering college any time between march to August. And.. I am thinking of studying Information technology/System as my course in college. The problem is, I am unsure if this is the right path for me. I don't know if this is what I really want for my future later on! Yes, I do love learning more about computers (prefer software to hardware). But what if I don't find them interesting later on when studying? I'm worried about that as I don't wanna regret later on. To add to that, my knowledge of programming and other software development is actually quite low. Can someone advise me on what should I do? Or tell me more about Information technology (what will I study later on in college and the career path)?
