• ACL in linux-based samba shares

  If I mount a samba share like this from a linux server using ACL in ext3... mount -t cifs //192.168.0.10/smbshare /mnt/smbshare -o user=root password=secret ...and access the share with linux/smb-user smbuser. I have given smbuser write access to all catalogs, but when I write something to the share the owner becomes root (the user that mountet the share). Is there any possibility to make smbuser the owner of the files/catalogs he creates even if the share is mountet by the root-user? This case is supposed to work on a linux terminal server so many different users access the smb share (mountet by root).

Also, what set ups do the clients need. The server is Ubuntu 9.04 and the clients are a mix of Windows XP / 7, Ubuntu and printers. • How can Django/WSGI and PHP share / on Apache?

  I have a server running an established PHP site, as well as some Django apps. Currently, a VirtualHost set up for PHP listens on port 80, and requests to certain directories are proxied to a VirtualHost set up for Django with WSGI. I'd like to change it so Django handles anything not existing as a PHP script or static file. For example, / -parsed by PHP as index.php /page.php -parsed as PHP normally /images/border.jpg -served as a static file /johnfreep -handled by Django (interpreted by urls.py) /pages/john -handled by Django /(anything else) - handled by Django I have a few ideas. It seems the options are 'php first' or 'wsgi first'. set up Django on port 80, and set Apache to skip all the known PHP, CSS or image files. Maybe using SetHandler? Anything else goes to Django to be parsed by urls.py. Set up a script referring everything to Django as a 404 handler on PHP. So, if a file is not found for a name, it sends the request path to a VirtualHost running Django to be parsed.

• How can I share a video file during a webinar?

  Here is the scenario: I have a number of remote employees around the globe. I want to have a video chatting session. No problem there. Halfway through, I want to shut off all camera video feeds and simulcast (synchronous) a training video to my team. How do I do this? We have tried office communicator, but the frame rate was awful and no audio. Adobe Connect had similar trouble. In both cases we were limited by the main office's small internet pipe, but it is clear that video delivered by shared desktop is not a good solution.

• OSX Parallels 5 - can't share internet connection when using host-only networking...

  I've just upgraded from Parallels 3 to Parallels 5, but am having a problem matching my previous configuration. I am a web developer so run a local web server on my mac. I used to allow access to this from the virtual machines in Parallels by using 'Host-Only Networking' and then in OSX enabling internet sharing from my wifi/ethernet to the virtual ethernet ports that Parallels created. The setup was based on: http://www.craigfrancis.co.uk/features/setup/parallels/ The new version of Parallels doesn't create any network adaptors that are available for internet sharing in OSX - just VNIC's which only show under an ifconfig... What I'm wondering is, how does the addon download it, and do other people see that i'm downloading the videos? For example, is all the software to download the video already on my computer, or does the addon contact someone else to get the video, or let them know? Can the webpage's administrator see I'm downloading the video?

  I just want to know whether this is a flaw or not in Bittorrent system. Let us assume that I am member of a Private Torrent site which requires me to maintain a specific upload to download ratio. Will this work: I create a torrent of a large file say [ Fedora Linux ~ 4 GB ] and upload it to the tracker I download the same torrent using my ID and start it on another machine on LAN or a Virtual machine Both clients have Local Peer Discovery enabled, so they will find 'em [ not via DHT ] and start x'ferring data using LAN bandwidth at LAN speeds. Though both uploads and downloads will increase, my ratio will also increase If I reiterate the entire process 'n' times, the numerator in the "RATIO" i.e Upload will become so large that the effect of downloads on ratio will become less. I want to know whether this is legitimate???

• change default userid for connecting to local AFP share?

  I've got Netatalk & Avahi running on a local Ubuntu server--I use two different userids, "afp" for Time Machine and "stew" to access my media files etc. In order to mount a shared directory on my server, I have to click "Connect As..." and enter my userid/password every time, because it always tries to log in using Time Machine's userid. I'm not sure if this is because that userid is set as default, or just because it's the last userid that logged in to that server--either way: Is there a way to change the default userid for connecting to a given server? Mega extra credit: I'd love to have this automated, such that my userid, "stew", is always logged in (and heck, it'd be great to have the directories always mounted, too!) whenever the server is available. We're looking into software to facilitate this, but somewhow typing "large file hosting" into Google gives questionable results.. ;) We've come up with the following requirements, and I hope any of you can points us in the direction of a solution that offers this functionality, or is malleable to our needs. Synchronization / revision management is of no concern, it's mostly single large (up to 1+ GB) file uploads & downloads we'll need. We'd like to make the downloads expire & be removed after a certain number of days / downloads, to limit the amount of cleanup we'd have to do. The data files exchanged sometimes hold confidential information, so the URLs generated should be random and not publicly visible. Our users are of the less technically savvy variety, so a simple webform would be best over a desktop client (because we also have to support a mix of operating systems). As for use of the system we'd either like to send out generated random URLs for them to upload their files, or have an easy way manage & expire users. Works on a linux (Ubuntu) server (so nothing .Net-related please) Does anyone know of software that fits the above criteria? We've already seen a few instances of this within the scientific community, but nothing we could use directly.. Best regards, Tim

• Do I have to chmod 777 my NFS folder when I share?

  Under Redhat, if I export a folder as an NFS mount, does the folder have to have RW for users/groups/others? Right now /storage/software is -rwxr-xr-x root/root i.e. /etc/exportfs /storage/software *(rw,sync) On my client, I can mount but I can't write. I'm using a regular user and NOT root. I think "no_root_squash" fixes it but I really don't want that. Then again, nor do I want to have to chmod 777 the folder on the server.

Fields seem like the answer but I can't get it to work; maybe it's not the answer. I'd like to be able to do this without any macros; it adds too much complexity. I need something more like Excel -- write a cell value here, reference it there, change the original value and the reference gets updated too. Edit: ideally I'd have the value updated automatically (fields don't seem to want to do that!).

• Why does writing a file to an NFS share send a COMMIT operation to the NFS server?

  I have a Debian squeeze (2.6.32-5-amd64) which is at the same time a NFS4 server and client (it mounts itself through NFS4). The local directory that leads directly to disk is /nfs4exports/mydir, whereas /nfs4mounts/mydir is the same thing mounted through NFS, using the machine's external IP address. Here is the line from fstab: 192.168.1.75:/mydir /nfs4mounts/mydir nfs4 soft 0 0 I have an application that writes many small files. If I write directly to /nfs4exports/mydir, it writes thousands of files per second; but if I write to /nfs4mounts/mydir, it writes 4 files per second or so. I can greatly increase speed if I add async to /etc/exports. (Writing a single large file to the NFS-mounted directory goes at more than 100 MB/s.) COMMIT performs the same operation for a client, flushing any unsynchronized data and metadata on the server to the server's disk or stable storage for the specified file. I don't understand why the client commits. I don't think that the "echo" shell built-in command runs fsync; if echo wrote to a local file and then the machine went down, the file might be lost. In contrast, the NFS client appears to be sending a COMMIT upon completion of the echo. Why? I am reluctant to use the async NFS server option, because it would apparently ignore COMMIT. I feel as if I had a local filesystem and I had to choose between syncing every file upon close and ignoring fsync altogether. What have I understood wrong?

• How do I share my iPhoto photos with my ubuntu partition?

  I have a MacBook Pro dual-booted with Snow Leopard and Ubuntu Karmic. I have recently imported hundreds of my photos into iPhoto - but I now want to be able to see them (and use them as desktop/screen saver images) from my Ubuntu partition (ie when the machine is running Ubuntu instead of MacOS). Is there an easy way to do this direct from the iPhoto library or do I have to shift them all out to an external file directory or something? Further edit - just to make it clear: I have already uploaded my photos directly into iPhoto - then spent many days categorising, tagging and uploading to flickr. Unless there's something I'm missing, I'm guessing it's likely too late to do the "don't copy into the iPhoto library" option. Happy to be proven wrong :) Perhaps somebody knows of a way to "export" the library without losing any of the current information - so that I can (from then on) keep the photos in an external library? I don't want to do this, though, if I lose the information that is currently there.

• How to make Windows 7 Network show Samba share after VM is rebooted/restored?

  On Windows 7, I have VirtualBox running Linux (Ubuntu 8.04), with Samba set up so that the Windows host can access it. But if the virtual machine is shut down & restored, or rebooted, the Windows Network no longer shows it. I've tried refreshing many times, restarting Samba, disabling/enabling the virtual network adapter, and running the succession of commands ipconfig /release, ipconfig /flushdns, & ipconfig /renew, but none worked. As a last resort I could restart the host itself, but is there a better way?

• While using an ntfs smb share for mac users, do symbolic links and extended attributes work?

  We have a majority of mac users but we'd rather support their file sharing using a Windows server with an ntfs drive, or at least a Linux server with ext3. We've had trouble, much trouble, utilizing the OS X server software and after the years are now looking to abandon it. What's mostly holding us back is the fact that the mac users very often utilize symbolic links and other special features that exist for an HFS+ partition. The shared locations are mostly primary storage and not just used as an archive storage location. While there is an option to create symbolic links under ntfs, I'm curious if there is anything I need to look out for if I were to move the files over to a new partition that's hosted from a Windows server from the HFS+ partition; in addition, how well creating a symbolic link from a mac might work. I am also worried about windows backup software and if it will ruin these special sym links, and how placing permissions on sub-folders will work. Alternatively I could remotely backup the files using a mac and Bru, nonetheless I still want to get away from mac server for hosting the shares.

  This is driving me up the wall just a bit. I have a new Samsung Wave mobile phone. It is running the Bada OS. The mobile phone does not come with anyone software for the Mac. The Kies desktop interface is only available for Windows. I did try installing the Kies software in a VM with Parallels 5 but it did not detect the phone connected via USB. I tried using Bluetooth file exchange on the Mac; it lets me browse the file system on the Wave phone but not actually see any of the media files; I just get empty directory views. But I am able to access files using media sharing with the Wave phone and my PS3. So what would be a Mac desks top app that can be used a media sharing browser?

• Clipboard app that automatically saves to Web share folder ?

  I currently use SnagIt and have used Windows 7 Snipping tools. These tools allow you to copy a piece of your screen the clipboard and then paste it into other applications on your desktop. They work with Outlook and it's really useful as you don't have to save the image to do a write-up or send an email. Problem is - you can't paste clipboard images into webforms. Gmail web does have image insert feature, but it only works on web images that you copied as it extracts the full url from your copy and uses that. It does not work on with images in your local clipboard. Does anybody know of an application that would allow to clip and save directly to a web folder, maybe something that replaces your clipboard with the URL of the save image location? It would be awesome if the picasa web client or evernote allowed actual clipboard pasting. Instead they ask for a file to upload.
