• Remotely Trigger WSUS Downloaded update Installation

  This has been bugging me for a while. We have our Servers set to download only windows updates to stage them to be installed during one of our bi-monthly patch windows. I have looked high and low for a way to trigger the installation remotely on the servers during this time so that I don't have to log into a hundred or more servers and click on the "Install Updates Now" balloon. Anyone know of a way to trigger the update installations remotely?

Its a total waste of money and time because i have to go to the store to replace a single color when all i want to do is print b&w. • Is 768Mb RAM @ 333Mhz faster or slower than 512Mb RAM @ 400Mhz?

  I have a simple question, but am not a hardware specialist. I have a small low-budget server with 512 Mb SD RAM, 400 Mhz. I have an extra 256 lying around, but it's 333 Mhz. I know I can add it to the system, and that it would automatically adjust the 400Mhz to 333Mhz. But my question is, which is faster/better for performance: 512 at 400Mhz, or 768 at 333Mhz?

• Why do my VMware Images get so large?

  Hi, I have a Centos VMware Image that I have recreated a couple times, and I notice that after a while it gets pretty large. It starts out at 8 GBs when I make it, and a week or two later it is 25GB and then a month later it is a whole 50GB or so. I am not installing anything crazy on it, and my disk usage on the VM is pretty low. Is there an option that could be affecting the size of these VMs?

  I'm interested in the actual real-word throughput attainable with an external 1000BaseT USB 2.0 network card under Linux. I have been able to attain 90 megabytes per second on a PCI-E interface, but the USB 2.0 bus has a theoretical limit of 480Mbit/s, and in practice less than 40 megabytes per second. Is the actual throughput attainable with such a card under linux 40, 30, 20, or even as low as 10 megabytes per second, eg. no better than a normal 100BaseT network card?

• Users take over a minute to log onto a 2008 windows server. LSM.exe running at 100MB+ memory.

  We've a 64bit Windows Server 2008 running Remote Desktop. The application lsm.exe (the local session manager) appears to be leaking memory. Although the memory usage is quite low when the server is rebooted, this continues to climb until people can no longer log in. The server has no audio card and does not have any AV software installed. The server is fully service packed. (Service pack 2) What could be causing this, and how would I fix it?

• Why does a hard disk suddenly look to Windows as if it "needs to be formatted"?

  This is more of a theory question, but what are the reason(s) for a disk to suddenly cause Windows to start saying it "needs to be formatted"? It happens to an IDE disk that I have in a cheap external enclosure, and I can usually get most of the data back by using software like recuva. It's now happened to an internal disk I have. I'm not looking for software to fix this (although links would be appreciated), but rather a low-level explanation as to what gets corrupted on the disk.

  I have an issue of my WD MyBook Live Duo going into some kind of low power standby mode when it hasn't been accessed for awhile. When I try accessing the drive it takes a minute or two to become responsive. When this happens Windows Explorer says the drive is unavailable. If I'm accessing the drive regularly throughout the day then this issue doesn't occur. Does anyone know of a way to make the drive more readily accessible on demand?

  I don't want to move my HDDs much, as it would definitely result in one of them one day dropping and fail... also, they are not portable (there are many), and inconvenient to use with a laptop. So, this is what I merely need:- 1) ability to access files as if the HDDs are directly connected to the computer.   When I use Earphones, I feel that my system output is very low, I have set all the volume output to maximum in "control panel\Sounds and Audio devices", but still not satisfactory. May be my earphones output proportionality is lower. No problem with sub-woofer, I think its because of the amplifier. Is there any software to boost up system volume output to compensate ?

• Annoying behavior from BitTorrent

  I'm trying to download a file via bittorent and experiencing a very annoying issue. Everytime I start downloading, the download rate varies between 40-50KB and stays at that for roughly a minute, before it starts to go down until it eventually gets as low as 2-3KB. If I exit and restart Bittorent it starts from 40-50KB again. What on earth is the reason for this? It seems like a pattern rather than the random fluctuation of seeds/peers leaving.

• Is there a way to change the default animation speed in PowerPoint?

  I do a lot of PowerPoint (2007) presentations, and some of those involve some rather complex diagrams that I like to build step by step, using PowerPoint's animation feature. I prefer using the "fade in" style, but I find the default medium speed setting too low, so every time I'm adding an element to my animation, I have to go to the Speed dropdown box and select "Very fast". This is getting annoying, so I wonder if there is a way to tell PowerPoint that I'd like my standard animation speed (at least for fade-ins) to be "very fast"?

  I'm running a python script to do some statistics and the actually memory which used is low,about 10%.And no other process cost more memory.However,when i use free -m and it shows that almost 95% memory has been used.The point is that my script should do a lot of read from files,so i wonder if there's any mechanism of Linux memory cache that caused the problem?echo 1 >> /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches works,but it seems manually.How can i reduce the memory cost and doesn't make a bad effect on reading files?

Windows System Restore takes up several Gigs of that space. Since I like having many restore points available, I don't want to decrease the amount of space available for system restore. • Typing in web forms lagging - output very slow!

  Hi all, Just recently, typing in forms on the internet has become rediculously slow. I'm on an oldish PC with low memory (1gb) and amd athlon XP 2800+ (2.08 ghz) and get an awesome 1.0 rating from windows :) Thing is though - it only just started happening. Was fine last week. Also, It doesn't only happen when heaps of other processes are open/running. I can have only one IE window up, after fresh reboot, and still happens. Any ideas why?

  While studying for the A+ Exam I was reading about SSD's and I thought to myself that if you had a mobo with a low RAM limit you could use a dedicated SSD purely for Virtual RAM. I looked up some info on line and the info I found said that this was a poor practice but didn't explain why. • Moving a window that can't be dragged by the title bar?

  I have Fallout Collection and I am trying to run it windowed because of the low resolution. When I change the mode to windowed via the .ini file, however, it starts the game with the window shoved into the upper left corner of my screen. Clicking the title bar of the window just clicks back into the game program. So how can I move it to the center of my screen? I am using Windows 7 professional 64-bit.
